Ironically because of this review, I now want to have it.
The paint budget for this figure may be why Siege Reflector had no battle damage paint apps...
I don't think they allocate budget like that. People caught onto such back in dark of the moon, but I believe budgets are stricter these days. It's why Aaron Archer left
@@DrLockdown that would explain why the original DOTM Megatron was too small and badly proportioned.
Nah I love that figure. Demolishes the SS version
@@DrLockdown argree, that figure is cool
@@DrLockdown just sucks that his mail weapon comes with a separate figure
The plastic looks awful tbh, it should've been at least painted silver. And this is coming from someone who liked Seige Apeface.
I'm basically in the same boat. I found Apeface fine, but this...blech...
I mean, I think it's a good mood for customs, I think a grey spray and some orange paint would make him a great cybertron thundercracker.
Or a shoe polish wash on the whole body, I think that would make him a lot better
Lotta paint rub with the torso though. Doubt you'd be able to transform it with paint chipping
@@DrLockdown I think some varnish would help with it, but then there's the complex transformation and I think it would have paint rub regardless.
Guess the wash is the better choice
I think the best 'fix' for it is selling it off :p
@@DrLockdown nah, I think it's a nice design to just ignore
Or paint him as space-case Or hooligan from generation 2
So, I was going through some eBay listings this morning, and I made a startling discovery. Maverick IS a released mold, a mold with the same jet-mode parts arrangement and gappy bot mode. He's Cybertron Thundercracker!
No it doesn't share any parts with that mould; he just has a similar transformation.
This figure is like one of those dollar tree knock offs
Pretty close
The plastic used for it looks like the ones used on glow in the dark toys, obviously minus the ingredients that makes them glow.
Yes, this is exactly what I thought at first glance. I also wondered, when the discussion turned to “abandoned/resurrected mold”, isn’t toy prototype resin this color, too?
Harmony gold employ: My lord Hasbro is attempting to make a new jetfire figure
Harmony gold Executive: WHAT!!! WE CANNOT ALLOW THOSE FOOLS TO DO SO. Get one of the lowers so we can pull a Disney and make them cease and desist.
Spoilers for Top Gun Maverick (It's a good movie, so beware)
I wonder if this was meant to be either Maverick's plane after years in storage or the busted up F-14 Maverick and Rooster hijack before the final showdown. F-14s aren't exactly commonly used planes anymore.
It’s the original plane he flew in the first movie, it says his and goose‘s name on the side of the cockpit and has their squadron decal on the tail
I dunno why but I'm still interested in this figure, I never seen the og topgun movie but the look of the figure, just works for me.
As someone who has seen the og movie I highly recommend watching it. Made me wanna get the figure sooooo bad. But price said no
The transformation reminds me of the 2007 movie Dreadwing, especially the middle part being separated and turned into arms/legs.
Maverick looks like that unpainted prototype of Blitzwing
Blitzwing is hurt by your comment
I apologize to Blitzwing. Ss Blitzwing looks better than maverick
15:43 And I though the siege seeker mold had limited rockers
Least it had those
Just wanna point out he's a Navy jet.
I'll admit, the fact that the Navy has jets is probably confusing for people outside of the States.
Very confusing.
Man, this thing makes earthrise starscream look like a masterpiece seeker by comparison.
That it does
POTP makes any other starscream figure look like a masterpiece
It sure does.
Chuck 'Im this way. I'm sure I can find a space on a shelf somewhere for him! lol
Thanks, but I'd prefer to use the Aussie sales threads. less of a hassle
Always thought it used the cybertron thunder cracker transformation ques
Never owned one of those
@@DrLockdown definitely check him out. It even does that nose cone tuck away
Huh.
Well the timing would line up, if it is indeed a cancelled classics toy
There's something you didn't check beforehand. The original movie all the way back in 86. Yes, the sequel is 36 years late. This jet is based on the original F-14 that Maverick flew in that first film as opposed to the F/A-18 that's actually in the trailer.
I hate to be the "oh but you see" guy, but you see, the paint job is accomplished, the jets in the trailers are F-18's, this here is the F-14 Tomcat. If you can't tell, I love this thing so much.
Does the tomcat have camouflage? And if so, is it this specific colour?
@@DrLockdown yes they do, you would need to watch the 1986 version. Also this was mainly the 1986 movie promotion more.
Then why call it maverick?
@@DrLockdown In the og topgun, Tom Cruise's character was named MaverickIn the og topgun, Tom Cruise's character was named Maverick
Huh.
Either way, no excuse to look this bad
Honestly, between all of the crossover figures Gigawatt really did get the tender love and care that came with his price tag. Aside from the phenomenal detail and exquisite paint to back it up he also has same critically necessary standard of articulation that almost all of the WFC Trilogy figures are engineered with given that he is literally Siege Sideswipe in disguise (Seriously, this standard of employing waist swivels and ankle rockers is what has driven me completely away from Studio Series aside from the 86 Movie and BB movie figures). *HASBRO EVEN LISTENED TO THE FANS BY CORRECTING THE COLOR OF HIS WINDSHIELD FOR THE FINAL RELEASE!!* Where was this attention to detail when Maverick was still in the oven?!
Maybe the designers were drunk
If they used better plastic and painted it in an aircraft grey color that was used on real F-14s, it probably would have been better praised. If I ever get this figure, I'm definitely going to paint it to look like a real F-14 Tomcat and put all the proper decals to make it look like the one in the movie
I don't think Maverick is all new. I don't know why or what, but locked deep with in the recesses of my mind, I know as a kid I had what ever figure this is based on. There are things in it's design and transformation that could not be clearer in my memories.
I have been driving my self INSANE trying to find what it's based on, because I KNOW I have seen much of this figure before, in the exact same form.
As in this is probably a figures something on the order of 20+ years old.
The transformation might take cues from it, such as the G2 cyberjets, but it was built from the ground up. Reused transformation schemes don't equate to reused cad models. Sometimes it's a case of 'copying homework'
It's Cybertron Thundercracker. Didn't recognize it at first because Thundercracker's entire left arm was different than the right to work the cyberplanet key gimmick.
In fact, I seem to recall seeing at least one Thew or Phelous video in which they review a KO that didn't have the gimmick and was virtually identical.
Nice review!! I just started watching your channel and congrats!! It is great!
I agree with what you said, maybe if it had been metal grey or dark grey the scoreboard would be higher. About nostalgia value, maybe not for top gun, but definitely for Macross, man!!! great Gerwalk mode!!
The funny thing is, Harmony Gold can no longer sue Hasbro if they do a macross style Jetfire :p
@@DrLockdown maybe that is why this design has seen the light until now. Could it be that in the past, the mold's similarities with HG robotech veritechs meant a high risk of a legal dispute that it got cancelled years back?? If so, this guy is one victory over HG's tyranic run over their license... even when it sucks xD
Could be. I hope we do get a toy style Jetfire eventually, and as a new mould with proper modern engineering
Yikes, and I thought RTS Jazz and Cybertron Scattorshot had wobbly torsos that come apart when you move the arms...
What do we call this; card house engineering?
@@DrLockdown to some extent the same can be said of Beast Wars figures with ball-jointed knees that will loosen over time. Almost every time I try to pose my BWII Mantis (Japanese Manterror) he falls over.
Do you plan on reviewing kingdom Cyclonus? I would love to hear your thoughts on that beauty.
Are you psychic? Did you just fukkin' see my script for next week?!?! HOW DID YOU GET ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER?!?!
@@DrLockdown Vaughn must've leaked it out of spite or something XD
Lol
Yeesh, and I thought the plastic on Siege Apeface looked bad! (According to Thew's review)
I picked one up for a super cheap price. I was excited to get it. I didn’t expect a great figure. Just the fact that something like this exist was enough for me. I doubt I’ll even take it out of the package. It’s just cool to have a Top Gun toy that is an official TF.
So yeah, in this case the nostalgia really is enough. For me anyway.
Maverick look like a retooled of Transformers Energon or Cybertron thunder cracker
why is he reviewing nothing
The transformation reminds me of Cybertron Thundercracker and Skywarp
It looks like those jet former knock offs you would find in a family dollar or dollar general
Oh God, that digi camo tampograph. What did they do to that poor Tomcat?😭
Great closing word 😁😁👍👍👍
Im not the only one who loves the mold and would absolutely buy it if someone gave it a better paintjob to be a different character, right?
Got this Figure back and December, the nose cone popped off and is now lost and it took for a while to get the joints working right. For the back apparently, you got to port some tabs on the black clip into some barely visible port and that makes it all work right. This isn't in the instructions
Ouch. Yeah the nose cone fell off a few times during filming, but I never bothered mentioning it because I assumed it was my fault
ngl i would still love to see a Datsun mould reused for a Knight Rider KITT transformer, or Generations Chromia for a TRON lightcycle.
Those two could work really well, and I've been CRAVING new Tron content
That bot mode deserved better. Such an iconic jet with a forgettable bot mode
“Are you really interested in the figure itself or are only interested in the concept that it’s trying to sell you?”
Um.....yes?
Not so much the Maverick figure, but I still want the other three crossover figures.
Lot of people aren't. Many people literally say 'the toy is shit, but I like what it's based on'
No joke, when I tapped on the link from your latest community post, an ad for the new maverick movie popped up. Real cool coincidence eh?
Lol. Personally not interested in that movie actually. Never saw the original, so I've got no connection. Originally bought this because the engineering looked intriguing.
And look where that got me :p
This reminds me of the old Star Wars Transformers toys. In fact, despite that the autobot is called "Maverick", it feels like its Maverick's mech form. It should've also added a Maverick and Goose minifigure and an opening cockpit similar to Star Wars Transformers.
This figure wasn’t meant to tie in with the Top Gun Maverick film, but the original Top Gun. Maverick’s and Goose’s name is on the nose like the first film. Plus the F-14 aren’t the jets used in the upcoming sequel film. Other than that, I have a love for this figure.
Well they did a rerelease when it came out
Maverick looks like a movie series figure. I love the head but, man, the body lets it down bad.
The jet is an F-14a tomcat not an F/A-18 hornet this is more first movie top gun from the 80’s and not the new maverick movie and I see the “Camo” as dirt and stuff that covered the wings also the wings are meant to move as an American with knowledge about this plane the wings are able to move due to being made mainly to land on aircraft carriers and the wings fold back into that delta shape for faster speeds and maneuverability during a dogfight also fun fact the F-14 was developed in the 1970’s and is still being used today
maverick has that early movie verse toy only design. maybe with some chicken legs.
The plastic looks… subpar… but as a fledgling aircraft nerd, I like this figure, probably helps that I got it for $25. I love the F-14, so I can overlook a lot of other issues
Also, you mention the resemblance with the Valkyrie from Macross, which is funny because the Valkyrie is based on the F-14, which this guy is
I hope they one day redo this mold as a cyberjet or something and give it better plastic and tolerances.
It would take a lot of work. I'd imagine the whole chest would have to be redone.
I Totally agree that this mold was meant for a cyberjet in classics, it would be a perfect hooligan
Not with that poor engineering it wouldn't!
I really hope at least the movie will be good so that at least the figure can be more bearable. I'm seeing it in a couple hours.
Heard mixed things about it. Personally not interested either way though
I just finished watching it as of me typing this. It was amazing!
Glad to hear it.
Honestly this would have benefited from being thrilling 30 jetfire, with a new nose cone these could be almost identical in jet mode, there is already spots for missiles and an opening cockpit that they could make a tiny tom cruise for. For robot mode the faux canopy on the chest has been removed before, has has the head, with perhaps some new forearms to accommodate new hands this could be very good.
lol, what are the ghostbusters and DeLorean retools of?
Ectotron is a retool of combiner wars hotspot, and gigawatt is a retool of siege sideswipe. Both are VERY extensive though
@@DrLockdown I guess since none of there parts are reused in any way.
It's all CAD models. Hasbro confirmed it themselves
Id like to see this mold reused as hooligan or space case
I personally like Maverick MAYBE because i love jetformers and love the crossover toys especially Gigawatt and i don't mind the proto-resin like plastic for some reason and you can get some expressive poses with the hinged and rotating hands to make him have some attitude with a Shrug *Also the fact that he comes with a giant volleyball is funny to me*
toyhax needs to do some collaborative labels instead of cartoon accuracy everywhere
like for gigawatt they could add alternative time circuit dates, a 2nd film licence plate, chrome blue labels for the black strips that glow when time traveling, and DeLorean logos
Apparently people want geewun instead, and the designers are also more into that.
@@DrLockdown they want geewun butnever specify comics, toys, or whichever individual cartoon frame of animation they want it accurate to
I just noticed that yours was missing One of the lines on the cockpit, you know on top
I'm waiting for this guy to be repainted as g1 toy jetfire
Probably not going to happen
They should do a super hornet and a Su-57 transformer as well.
Critism taken for maverick being the first f 14 mode, I dont wanna be a nitpicker, the guns are basically fuel canisters, and your right. They should of done it better honestly,
I've learned today that a lot of people love this type of jet. What a letdown to those people
@@DrLockdown agreed but I'm happy with it honestly, its really not for everyone, im ok being the Oddone in this community
Ok listen, I'll defend my Darth Vader/Tie Fighter Transformer to the death.
Messed with one. Really didn't like it
Is the couch that transformes into a street bike sold separately? 😏
Couch? Not sure I follow
The jet isn't camouflaged..its dirty. Its meant to be dirty.
Why won’t Hasbro understand that the best Transformer crossover was when Transformers crossed over with Diaclone?
Do you get the reference?
May I ask why you do expect every or any transformer to be the best ever?
I don't. I just try to deliver the most interesting scripts I can for content, and often that involves really fantastic or really terrible figures. Usually there's not a lot you can say when the figure is 'just alright'
I would get this and paint it up like a GI Joe sky striker and add some Joe labels. Attach some different weapons from various kits I own. It has potential but Hasbro was just lazy with it.
Nice shout out to patriot prime i like his videos too
Did he say airforce Markings?? ITS THE NAVY!!!!
I'm not an army expert. My mistake.
And now we need Transformers X Knight Rider. And the robot must have a robo-wind hair.
That'd be cool, provided it's based on a good mould
@@DrLockdown G1 Windcharger. Cute, tiny, & shiny.
it looks like it’s supposed to glow in the darkel
Sadly it does not
@@DrLockdown if it did, then this figure would be amazing
Yea... even with out structure or articulation problems..... He REALLY needs some paint....
I've seen customs. It can work, but it's difficult given the paint rub
Though I dislike the plastic, as a kid I loved collecting Transformer jet and this guy being a near perfect F-14 I still like him. They should had painted him a flat gray and use more blue in the robot mode.
Grey would've definitely helped
I know maverick got a reissue but I wish the reissue fixed the problems with the figure. The deco should've changed to silver, some of the QC issues could've been fixed and maybe (I think this is just me) better and more accessories.
Hey, I just wanted an F-14 transformer, so I’m here for it
I wish it was a two pack, with maverick and an F/A-18 figure (rooster?)
I feel like if it had more paint of was molded in a different color it wouldn’t be as bad.
There are rumors of a retool of kingdom Gnashteeth (BW Megatron) into Rexy from the Jurassic Park series, will you be picking it up if the rumors are true?
I thought that would be a great crossover but I didnt know there were rumors.
I heard the rumours too, but doesn't Mattel own the license to JP?
I actually bought the Ectotron with the Afterlife deco than thinking about buying this one or the X-Men horror.
You know what I would really like to see? earthrise sun streaker remolded as kitt with the flashing lights as his viser and studio series dark of the Moon Megatron redone as that truck from the movie duel one of Steven Spielberg's first films
I heard after I posted this video. They never advertised it, so I had no idea
No action figures I want to see later down the line I mean it would be cool but they haven't done it yet I don't know do you agree because I think a Knight Rider and duel transformer would be awesome
Aaaaand I replied to the wrong comment. I'm an idiot.
Meant to say that sunstreaker would work well, but I'm not a fan of the SS Megatron mould.
@@DrLockdown maybe rid 2001 scourge or titans return octane or just make a new mold from scratch but knowing hasbro and the QC problems they might f*** it up
Eh I kinda still want him to customize him and hope they use some of the engineering in something like a generations cyberjet
Until the x men transformers figure how do you feel like about the figure
Same thing. Seems like another rush job. Until I see something that looks amazing and comes from a truly magnificent mould, like gigawatt, I'm not partaking in crossover figures
Hey atleast he has colors like red yellow blue and white claws or what ever those are i dont care and i mean i do like the comics like the ghostbusters and the back to the future ones and the ideas are actually interesting most decepticons are dead cause the form the constructor aka starscream whereing a necklace of the heads of optamus megatron shockwave jetfire and starscream being the main vilian and in back to the future it was interesting that a apocalypes and they better make a legnds class skilz it seems interesting and most autobots are dead
as a customizer I would love to own this guy to paint it, and actually planned to. but the price is just wrong..
It just needed better plastics and better paint, that could have made it good enough...they clearanced this for like 20 bucks here. I was tempted to buy one and try to customize it, I mean, I couldn't possibly worsen it.
If it was just the plastic I could let it pass, like with apeface. Unfortunately the engineering stinks too
You know what I'd do with him? Paint it black and give it a Razgriz livery.
Armada Starscream from Generations, SS Blitzwing, this figure......what up with jets and floppy torsos?
I have those two moulds. I think those are fine
@@DrLockdown I guess your copies didn't suffer from tabtile dysfunction. Tlk Bee's feet can't say the same.
Never got that one. Didn't like the look
2:59 well... it's because the toy is based on the 86 TopGun Movie
Did that have camoflauge?
@@DrLockdown yes, but it doesn't look like shit
Figured. There really is no excuse for it
I think I’ll get him and customize him into Beast Wars 2 Dirge.
Harmony Gold is the Disney of toy companies
I feel that Harmony Gold is even more petty.
Yikes & a half, I'm kinda happy I didn't pick this up. Gigawatt just seemed more fun to me since I love the Back To The Future films so much & it was an interesting remold of Siege Sideswipe.
I wish I could have gotten a hold of Ectotron, but oh well. I may try to get X-spanse since it seems to be an EXTENSIVE retool of Studio Series ROTF Jetfire & also because since it's based on the X-Men Animated Series & it's Blackbird.
Ectotron is pretty bad too; about on par with maverick. You've already got the best of the ones out right now
@@DrLockdown Fair enough. My suggested feed actually showed your videos after I was watching some videos from Thew, and I love your video structure. It's very nice. Also, what voice did you use for your Top 20/10 videos? Sounds like The Heavy from TF2.
I also recently subbed too as I do love your content.
Thanks mate. That's Vaughan, the Scottish wizard. He pops up from time to time
@@DrLockdown Cools, and no probs. I recently finished my Classics Seeker team by nabbing Henkei Skywarp & Ramjet and I'm happy about that. I also got Kingdom T-Rex Megatron on preorder since I don't have a version of that character in my collection.
I should be disappointed I know what that red haired girl is from
Eh. I just watch a lot of lost pause. Don't have to be an expert
I wish this figure had actually good quality. I would expect better from a Transformer jet whose missiles turn into Spas-12s.
Imagine this as a Space Case or Hooligan😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩. But it will never be
With all the solidity issues, I'm glad it's not...
@@DrLockdown it sucks it's that bad. You think it's an issue they could fix and tighten up or is it just the fact there's too many
* The premeire date trailer for the movie is finally out.
A teaser was out already when this review was released
"F*ck harmony gold"
Considering those guys pretty much constantly screwed over battletech and other franchises by claiming rights that they never had, yeah.
Gotta sit down and properly watch macross
Poor Apeface... he ain’t so bad
I actually quite like him
Seriously, they couldn't even call the figure goose?
I’m getting heavy cybertron skywarp vibes
He may not make a good Top Gun shoutout, but what about Leader 1?
Still nope
0:23 you made me really sad with ( what Disney hasn't bought yet"
It's getting pretty scary.
I preordered this figure thinking "Sure it's expensive, but it's still cheaper than any Macross figure of similar size". I cancelled my preorder after seeing that the irl plastic looks like Yakult. If Hasbro had better competition, I don't think this would have happened (I'm looking at you Harmony Gold). Speaking of which, anyone here drank Yakult before?
No, but oddly enough it came up in conversation last night
@@DrLockdown I recommend it, but it's not for everyone.
Hmmm
HE IS G2 HOOLIGAN!
I kept seeing this and thought it was a machine wars figure
It does look similar, and even has a similar conversion. Sadly has none of the charm though
At least the Kibble management is better than most figures nowadays
I don't particularly consider kibble an issue unless it gets ridiculous. Most figures these days seem fine to me.
@@DrLockdown ehhhh, I still feel the way he handled the kibble in both Moses despite the meh paint job and dated joints (even though lack of waist swivel seems to be making a comeback) earns him a higher ranking than double dealer.
