How can you call it a "self" driving, "autonomous" vehicle if it's constantly relying on an internet connection for the "cloud" to tell it what is going on around it? The car can't understand the world around it? Lane markings, crosswalks, road edges, drivable path, stop light lane association, all done in the cloud and sent to the car? This sounds like yet another "on-rails" application just like Waymo and Cruize. How is this a good thing? Some map data is a good thing, I admit, but things the car should be able to see and understand with cameras being mapped means the visual perception is lacking.... right??

It can understand the world around it. You should check out some of the talks by their technologists.

Nah man, it uses this kind of map data purely for reference. When you put in a destination with no service your car will probably just start going that direction purely using its own surroundings and whatever map data is already has. just like tesla currently does. Except these kinds of maps basically make complex lane visibility full proof.

All the vehicles consuming the data are also the ones collecting the data. So at the end of the day it is a huge distributed system where everyone supports each other. The cloud supports with some heavy lifting offline processing to combine all the data streams into one consistent map. Since the world is constantly changing this makes a lot of sense. People have been listening to radio broadcasts in order to find out more about road and traffic conditions in the past and have looked at paper and then at digital maps. A system like this where everything (not only traffic) is updated fully automatic close to real-time is the next evolutionary step.

@@JohannesSchmitz lol it’s not that cool. We’re still on 2020 maps and just recently got 2021 maps 😅 and there’s been so much road construction that it’s already outdated. We don’t get any crazy detailed maps or anything. Car does everything from the AP computer (which is constantly overclocked)

I guess we have to distinguish between what is currently being developed and what is already on the road. What I described is how I understand the vision for the coming years.
