    Lindsay could make a video about the weather in the middle of nowhere in 1982, and I would watch it multiple times. She's the best!

    I'm surprise that she didn't mention "FV" mode. That mode saves me ALOT in post production. I use FV mode when I take theater performance photos. Just set my shutter speed, and f stop to what I'll use for the whole show. Then I'll put my ISO in auto, have my focus point where I want it to be for the shot, and use my exposure composition on the fly to readjust. Using that mode saves me alot of time in post production and didn't lose much shots due to under or over exposed pics.

    the biggest gamechanger for me was to turn on the specified AF start points in Face+Tracking AF method. And that is customization worth a try.

    In studio (my main preference) its always 100 iso. Otherwise I shoot auto iso so I use the bar for focus selection, the tough pads for level and histogram

    In some ways, Canon's interface takes more to learn than picking up an older Canon camera. I compare it to learning gestures on a new phone... it just takes a while. You always give great ideas that are relevant. Thanks!

    Great tips...i found an issue when shooting in the studio that i sometimes accidentally hit the info button instead of back button focusing and it seems to change the iso from 100 to something like 1600...is there a way to disable this as it has ruined a few shots now and I just didn’t see the change in the viewfinder at the time

      Setting the multi function button to control the manual audio input level works well in filming mode.

      Gerard Ferry Bullshit. It is super fast for swiping my ISO where I want it. I wish there was one on the battery grip so bad. It's so annoying not being able to get to it easily in vertical position when using the grip. Don't you worry, though. All you naysayers have already convinced Canon to get rid of it in the Mark II coming next month. So those of us who love it will have to give it up in future bodies thanks to the vitriol.

    I always shoot with back button focus. But -- I’m wondering where/how this can happen on this camera.

    • @TheWhiteTimes
      @TheWhiteTimes 4 роки тому +2

      go to buttons customization -> customize shutter release button to meter only. Then customize the button that You would like to have as a back button focus and set it as a meter and AF start.

    Thanks, Lindsay. One subject for the R is rarely explained is that one using the R with Studio flash. It is next to if not impossible to shoot due to the darkness of the screen. I discovered by trial and error that it is indeed possible to see thru the viewfinder if you choose the middle choice on the menu for viewfinder selection. It is not explained in the manual. Thanks again, Lindsay. JRS

      When shooting Studio work, you want to disable exposure simulation. It's in the menu, shooting tab (camera icon), and the 3rd secondary tab. I registered it on My Menu where that is an option I am toggling on and off quite a bit.

    • @longliveclassicmusic
      @longliveclassicmusic 4 роки тому

      You must need to update your firmware, because mine came with firmware 1.4 and is now running 1.6, and as soon as I put my trigger on and it detects it, exposure simulation automatically turns off which can indeed be done manually like Shawn said in the previous comment. But I don't have to do it manually. As soon as my trigger is turned on, the EOS R stops simulating exposure and shows a regular image of the scene unaffected by exposure settings. Seriously. The new firmware updates on these mirrorless cameras are NOT to be put off. They make enormous improvements.

    The Multi-function Bar is tamed by setting the top panel Lock button to control only the Multi-function Bar. The Lock button will then instantly toggle the bar on or off; it's much quicker than the long-press method of toggling the bar. I use the bar for color balance settings.
    I have my C3 custom user mode set up for stage productions so that the focusing is moved back to the shutter release (I'm getting away from back button focus with the EOS R because I seldom need to focus and recompose). As the stage lighting changes, I constantly ride exposure with my left forefinger on the Control Ring, change the focus point from performer to performer with my right thumb using Touch and Drag, and focusing and releasing the shutter with my right index finger. Everything is in constant motion. I'd never go back to a DSLR for stage performances. Also, because the C3 setting is also used for video when the red video button is pressed, I'm instantly ready to shoot a bit of video of the same stage productions.

    It looks like a good camera.
    It also sadly shows how far behind the sleeping giants of nikon/canon are.
    I can't speak for others;
    On my camera I keep the iso on auto between two values. Depending on the lighting and metering, the camera will select the appropriate value for the other exposure variables.
    On the front command wheel I can have exp comp. If I depress it, it will move between iso parameters. Either native to 800..or 800-1600.
    By the lens is a user assigned button that is hotkeyed to eye recognition. Turn it on for one person..turn it off when in crowds.
    The aperture is on the lens.
    The shutter has its own dial, but can also be assigned to back command wheel, which also has a secondary depress where it can be assigned to anything you want.(WB)
    The point is, once my eye is at the eye cup, I never have to move the camera away, and every finger can control any function. However, being able to isolate touch focus to a specific part of the screen is a neat idea. I question how good it is, but a good idea nonetheless.
    I am glad nikon and canon got a big wake up from how quickly sony and fuji began taking market share..however all that that menu diving and swiping still looks clunky to me. Three setting profiles, when my much older camera has 6 etc etc..good first attempt at a mirrorless by canon, but still quite behind where the tech is currently at.

    I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS R. After shooting with it for a while, I realized that I want a way to quickly return settings to a predefined point. This simplifies quick adjustments made from that baseline. Lindsay described exactly what I was looking for in the custom settings segment (last tip in the video). Awesome. Thanks.

    I admit, I really love the "prevent accidental changes" way like the pressing down for a moment then swiping on the touch bar and the half-press shutter to alter exposure compensation on the control ring. It's REALLY well thought out. I'm the kind of person that likes having those options and had no idea the EOS-R had this.

    Until this very day I couldn't find any useful setting for the multi function bar. It's a pointless feature and I hope the manager who approved the MFB suffers from flatulence since. 😅

      I use it for white balance, something a lot of others do. On other hand, some photographers are incapable of implementing the extra tool.

    • @longliveclassicmusic
      @longliveclassicmusic 4 роки тому +1

      I use it for ISO in the event I'm shooting an EF lens since I only have the adapter without the control ring… It is far from useless. If I had that adapter I would set it for kelvin white balance… You people who hate it are like a huge flock of pigeons shitting everywhere… Seriously… There is nothing wrong with it. I have never ONCE hit it by accident, and if I did I would know immediately because I would see my settings change on the screen… They are unfortunately going back to a joystick in the R II, and I am REALLY hoping they don't do away with touch and drag on the screen since that's usually what the joystick is for… I am absolutely in love with TAD and do NOT want to go to give it up for a joystick. But haters like you are precisely why Canon is getting rid of it in the next models.

    I'm a new user and learned about the silent shooting option - disappointed that it can't be used while using flash.
    I was hoping to find a way to use the bar to turn it on and off - so that I could switch quickly back and forth .. without having to jump to the menu all the time .. my events photography that I've been doing have me going back and forth and this would be idea if I could figure that out ..

    • @longliveclassicmusic
      @longliveclassicmusic 4 роки тому

      Jae Robinson Yeah the silent shooting isn't great on this camera. Banding is horrible in my experience. You can almost rest assured it will be majorly improved in the Mark II coming out next month, so if I were you and really needed to use that feature, I would be making preparations to upgrade camera bodies. I personally never need it.
