CoinOPS Next 2 Preview: How To Use Game Packs On A Different Drive To Your CoinOPS Next 2 Build

- A number of users were asking about how to do this on the Discord server, so I decided to experiment with it using Next 2 and if users follow this video, they should find it to be pretty painless and easy enough to do - especially using my newly-created bat file that does all the hard work for us! I go through the process of trying things step-by-step and how it affects Next 2 until success is found and achieved. Look for how to use the command 'mklink' on UA-cam and you'll see the best way to do it. You will only need one command to do it. Keep up the good work!
Maybe it will but you would have to do this for all your shortcuts. If you have hundreds of games, that might take a while!
You can just move your collections folder to another drive and use mklink to create a hard link. It will link every single game at once.
1. Move your collections folder from c:\coinopsfolder to d:
2. Open command as an administrator
3. Type mklink /d "c:\coinopsfolder\collections" "d:\collections"
4. Done!

Can you make a vid on how to use external and internal hd with roms on both?
I can do that in the near future hopefully, yes - but it will be for CoinOPS Retro Arcade / Retro Arcade 2 (the latest builds)

Hey thanks for the video. Question…is your I Drive an external Hard-drive? If it’s not, can I use an external Hard-Drive and load every single game as you did? By the way, I changed the shader by accident and I have no idea how to remove it. Please help me. One more thing…can I change the button configuration that I did because I wanted to change some buttons mapping. I’m using an ATGames control deck synced via Bluetooth to my pc and I goofed up
Best to join the Discord server and ask on the AT Games Legends channel. I do use an external hard drive
A thumbs up from me, just for the name of the video, I have not even watched it yet, but a much needed video on how to do this. Mmmm, not good at the end as if you are a collector and hoarder such as I am, I will have multiple drives as not everything is going to fit on one hard drive, no matter how big it is.
Actually, if you edit the settings.conf files for each system to show the path of your additional roms that need to be stored elsewhere on yet another drive, then you can store them anywhere you want too! :)
@@pipmick2775 Ok thanks for confirming that, you kind of made it sound as if it would only work on one drive. We still have about three weeks to think about our set ups in the mean time. I still need to invest in a 1tb drive for the OS and Next 2 and then the fun and games can commence for storage.
Does anyone know how to have coin-ops start up on a certain pack ? ... Example,... After boot up, the first thing that starts up is the street fighter pack
We moved away from Next a few years ago - it's no longer supported, sorry. We have newer, faster, better builds now, so if you join the Discord you can find out which one is best for your needs

Any update with this process? Seems over time things get easier or more automated. Great video! Took awhile to find a video like this one but glad I did!
No update - not had chance to revisit this recently but principle is the same no matter which build of CoinOPS you use except the folder structure for packs does change but if the games are the same, change the path to the games you have should still work
So what about the folders in the collection folder that does not have a settings file? Does it stay on external drive or does whole folder get copied over? Ty
Anyone know how to do this for just one game pack? I've managed to get it to work but the media is either only showing for the game pack I've moved or if I don't edit the settings file for the base media it doesn't the media for that specific pack? Any got this working or ideas? Thanks
Edit the settings.conf for the pack as you said you had, but edit the lines further down that point to the media and edit it to point to the logos and the line for the videos too. Remember to take out the # character out from the beginning of those lines that you edit or your changes are ignored.
how do i put games on 2 separate hdd? I have an 8tb filled and need to put my pc games on a separate hdd?
Make a PC games subcollection with the new settings.conf file pointing to your new drive - see my subcollection-making videos to learn how to make subcollections first :)
It would be nice to actually have that bat file available to make moving all the stuff easy ~ maybe update the description with a link to that or throw it in a pinned comment? :)
Not releasing that I’m afraid - it was particular to my PC so don’t want to break other builds if it’s wrong for other PCs.
Yeah but people could just edit the paths to everything no problem, so they would just use it as a template that they can then customize as they need so it moves everything around in the specific places where you'd tell it to throw stuff... Unless there's more to it that I'm not aware of... Maybe at least give people an idea for how they can make their own scipt that's similar, if not identical to yours so they would acount for their own drive configurations and paths and all that.
I understand what you're saying but if it goes wrong for users who don't understand the files or they run them and it somehow damages their CoinOPS builds, who will they blame? Yep, good old me and I don't want that for anyone.
It's not worth the risk to me, sorry. The video shows you what to do manually anyway and for those that know how to write bat files, it would be easy enough for them to do it.
i'm not an expert by any means but i was able to create a bat file that moved the settings.conf. Each folder required its own line so I selected all the folders and SHIFT Right click to create a text file with collections. Brought that list into excel and created the lines i needed for the batch script. The script it self was just @echo off on the top line then xcopy "source" "destination\" As far as editing the settings.conf to remove the #, I ran into a little trouble and couldn't figure out how to script that so I downloaded the trial version of TextCrawler and I was able to do it that way.
@@xxphuquaxx Very good. Decided not to share the bat file because in the wrong hands and used without prior knowledge or understanding, it might destroy users' builds and I didn't want that for users and on my conscience either.

that bat file isnt that specific to your file paths how does it know were to copy my files from
Next 2 is no longer supported now, it's far too old, I'm afraid

The bat file was never included - I worked out that it would have been a way for users to break their builds, so I decided not to release the bat file, so just create each folder and launcher file for each system manually and you'll be good.

Pip, you star! Have you noticed any slower loading times by using an external as oppose to keeping everything in original drive folders?
My external drive is a USB 3.0 but plugged into a USB 2.0 port and it seems fine in these tests

Hi, works great for console games but I can't manage to get PC Games to work, I see the art and everything but I cannot access the games. Any idea why?
Check your launcher name in launchers.windows folder is referenced to correctly in the settings.conf file in the PC games collection folder matches. There may be an extra space in either file or file name that prevents the PC games from working through CoinOPS. This was the common problem for users back then, but Next 1 and 2 are old now and discontinued

It’s out of date now and needs more work - you will have do it manually now as Next 2 has changed since I made the video months ago and it needs the updated settings.conf files too, which have changed since I made the video
cant you just install every system in the main next2 build then just copy all of that over to the external as the stand alone dont need to be installed, just runs anywere.
But what about if the drive you put every system on runs out of hard drive space? Why copy / move your roms when they are already on another drive? That was the purpose of this video - to show how you can just point Next 2 to the relevant drive and folder path.
@@pipmick2775 I have external 5tb purposely for this retro setup so by installing the lot within the build then copying the build+systems/roms over to the 5tb everything from then on in will be dumped on that 5tb with the build, generally the drive where the roms are going I made sure it will be big enough not to be needing to copy them off or redirecting file structures on to another bigger drive so I went with biggest none power plug external drive I could find, the build should be smaller than the bulk systems so I thought mays well just chuck in on the external with the systems/roms it saves the fannying about. Can take it away and plug it in another pc and load it up is a good thing, all off the 1 drive.
question can you add mame roms without cover or video and will it show the name?

This is great but I notice that this method does not work with Mame as those are not stored in the collections folder. Any idea how to move that?
There are dedicated Arcade packs for Next 2 anyway. It's somewhat pointless to move them from Next 1 really. Mame games are stored in the emulators\Mame
oms folder in Next 1, but should then be transferred to Emulators Official\Mame
oms folder in Next 2.
@@pipmick2775 yeah i saw that. i've been working through whats different in the folder structures. it's quite a few things but not terribly hard to figure out what goes where. My initial question was about having coinops on one drie and the ROMS on another. In the video, you show how to do it with games that are in the collections folder but seeing as Mame is stored in the Official Emulators folder, does that need to stay with CoinOps Next 2 or can those be kept on a seperate drive as well. Hope that makes sense.
It needs to be kept with next 2 build or else you will need to edit the mame.ini file to reflect the new roms folder and all else it uses too
not too difficult if you know what you're doing with MAME

It wasn't added - it is possible to break builds with it, so I didn't add it. You will have to add them yourself, sorry.

We’ve moved onto Next 2 which is easier to add PC games of your own and you can migrate existing ones to next 2 as well anyway

As far as I know, it can support at least 2 monitors but the settings for the emulators would need editing, particularly MAME
Please can you tell me how to turn off the settings menu so a key combination has to be used instead? I want to use coinops on s cab so don't want users getting in to the settings and mess stuff up. Thx
You can turn it off in the GUI by changing the name of the 'ZZZ Settings.txt' file to something else (best not delete it) in the 'collections\Main\menu' folder in case you need it back in the future.
To be able to access it using a key combo is another matter that I can't help you with unfortunately, but if you join the CoinOPS Discord server, you could ask the creator, BP, for the possible solution to that.

There is the possibility with much more modern builds, such as Forgotten Universe Atarashii. Next 2 is now very old and outdated

Unfortunately not, I think, but I'd have to check.
However, to circumvent this issue, you can create a subcollection and launcher file for that drive path and put the .sub file for it in the first collection's folder so those games are shown in the same collection, but use the other drive.
