30-some odd years later, I still think this is a fantastic song. I remember my aunt, in buying the album for me, said that the rest of the album sounded very different from Safety Dance. I said, that's ok. And I'm glad for it. This is a gem that I'm glad made it to the US release.
Never new what this music was about but it planted a seed that lead me to explore the caps. Had to see what was there. This song has haunted me for a long time. Thanks for posting.
What a great song, and great, original music and sound for the time. Ivan's voice is so powerful. Being such a hard rock and heavy metal fan, I'm shocked at how much I loved Men Without Hats. This video, well, it's weak. I could have done so much more with it, but seeing them young and hungry, is still great. I do wonder if Ivan really played that great bass line? Wahi' Valleys
I love how they are from Montréal, one of my favourite cities. I remember one of the first times hearing this song blasting in my car while I was on my way to a meeting in Montréal when I just started a new job!
Originally, this track was on the EP 'Folk Of The 80's' (1980). In my opinion, it's one of Men Without Hat's best tracks out of their entire music catalog.
Despite "Safety Dance" is the song that let me feel the biggest euphoria and no other song could do that to me, I play Antarctica most oftenly:) I got bored with Safety Dance and Antarctica is now my favourite track of Men Without Hats

Yes, Berlin, OMD, or just about any other synth-pop band of the era. I’d say this song was a bit ahead of its time, as in the subject matter, not the music itself. BUT, from about 1983 till today, October 28, 2020, I have not heard this song, yet when the word Antarctica is mention with a certain inflection I instantly sing this chorus, with its strange and catchy pronunciation of the word. So here’s my point- Music and the mind are incredibly interdependent, and our ability to recognize certain sounds and the triggers they set off, similar to how certain smells do the same thing, instantly put you “there” in a place or more often with a person with whom you associate that smell, most notably your early girlfriends perfume. This recollection ability far surpasses what our conscious mind can recall without the proper stimuli. Music especially has powers of imprint on the mind and the triggering of memories far exceeding what was previously thought was possible, being compared to a powerful computer’s ability to recall information not noted for decades. Some of us can recall and repeat the whole of songs we haven’t heard in 38 years. Can you repeat what your 5 grade teacher said everyday of school? How about, if you’re old enough, you’re wedding vows from 35+ years ago, or a sermon, or a lesson, whatever? But with music, it is recalled verbatim without consciously seeking that memory. Incredible. I never knew they had a video for this. Never knew that three of the band members were brothers. Never knew they were from Canada, not England. And Ivan’s voice and delivery made the song. That’s not as common as you’d think.
This sounds a bit too modern to be from 1980. It's got that 1982 sound. I'd be interested to hear the 1980 version. Funny how two years can make a difference.
Pretty sure the recordings on the EP and ROY LP are the same. The LP version is edited and considerably shorter but if you listen to them back to back the vocals and everything are identical. I think the EP version has an extra verse as well.

+Samuel Lacher *This song very well portrays the way that I feel when I come into my house from outside. My father grew up in Minnesota, so he keeps the air conditioner set to a temperature that he grew up in and is comfortable with. It is comparable to that of Antarctica's.
Jesus Christ, what a fantastic band this was. They were (are) so weird, with tinges of progressive rock, that no one could get a handle on them at the time. Beware the term "one hit wonder" when applied to bands from the 80s. Generally, with, MWH or lcehouse or Wang Chung or a-ha, or a ton of other bands, the hit was the fluke in a long line of great music no one bothered to dig into at the time. Another good example is Talk Talk who l got into on their first album. Unlike everyone who says they always loved Talk Talk. Please go investigate all of the bands l mentioned- you will not be disappointed.
Rythum of Youth was definitely one of the great albums of the 1980's. All the songs were excellent!

Like like !!! I like these 80's songs, all of'em .
40 years later, I'm still bumping this song ... I just love it!
Good intro..
This song mesmerized me when it was released in 1980 and still does today 44 years later...one of the greatest new wave songs!
New Wave and Cold Wave at the same time.
Esta cancion tiene 41 años. Mamma mia!!

Hate to break it to you, it's been almost 40 years(!).. I would steal my older brother's cassette and listen to this song on his walkman.
And I would've been that auntie/tia, I would by music for my nephews. I don't care for Safety Dance, and I can't pinpoint it, but this is my favorite.
One of my favorite songs from the 80's. Can't wait to see them tomorrow night at the Brooklyn Bowl!
this song goes hard!
This has always been in the back of my mind since the 80's. I had to find it tonight. I remember most of it. Its a really catchy tune.
FANTASTIC SOUND !!!
What a fucking cool Prince Charming ! Can t believe I ve never heard it before ...
I have this EP on cassette. Love it.

Brilliant!
Uno de mis temas favoritos de los 80 , muy buena la subida del videoclip

This is pretty much Men Without Hats one synthesizer "heavy metal" song. Absolutely dark, ominous and great! Wahi' Valleys
Wonder if they ever did it during the Sideways era.
Fuck me. This is awesome.
omg i had no idea there was an actual video of this!!! 😻😻😻
I love how they are from Montréal, one of my favourite cities. I remember one of the first times hearing this song blasting in my car while I was on my way to a meeting in Montréal when I just started a new job!
Best band from Montreal. Martha and the Muffins are my other favourite Canadian band.
An 80’s Alternative Masterpiece!

szymikon1980 It was filmed in 1980, shortly after the EP was released.
Thanks, I wondered how did he look in 1980 compared to Safety Dance videoclip filmed in 1983.

Alot of people were listening to the Cars and missed alot of this music.
Always wish they would have lowed the volume on the keyboard and amped up the crunchy guitar on this particular song.
You mean rhythm guitar? Yeah, I too think that it should be 30% louder.
its like that because the high piched keyboard reminds you of cold antarctica
