As a science educator and college professor, I completely understand the need for questioning one’s beliefs and avoiding unnecessary bias when constructing one’s own argument. It’s crucial to understanding the basis for scientific inquiry and general problem solving. The problem with deconstructing one’s faith and following the masses of just “loving people like Jesus” is that often the accountability of local assemblies (churches) and the individual believers. They appear to become blended in these massive church settings with outlandish Christian entertainment and sneaker preachers to spread “love” while being confused as a cleaner of secular media. I agree with the above comment, “Jesus the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Yes, He is love. Yes, He is forgiveness. Yes, He is mercy. But, we cannot water down the Gospel for record sales, public appearance and perception. If we’re aiming to just avoid offending people, we might not be worshiping the same Jesus.

I lost my faith when I read the Bible from beginning to end 3 times. I wanted to believe but I couldn’t. The amount of contradictions, the murder of innocents .
I was an evangelical , a gospel singer , a believer . But my research provided truths that were not in line with what I had been taught. It was very hard to walk away .

Amen! I also went through a period of deconstructing my faith. Going back to the beginning, questioning everything and also praying while asking the Spirit to guide me. Yes, my faith is different. Yes, I abandoned certain things I used to believe. Yes, my relationship to the church is different. HOWEVER, my faith in Jesus is stronger now then it was before. My faith is more based on Jesus and the experience of God then is was before and I feel so much more confident in my faith than I ever have. Maybe it is because the beginning of my faith was heavily Jesuit influenced. There is an absolute truth and deconstruction helped me find it... in Christ.

With so many different religions all believing by faith in a God or Gods that they all think is/are real, yet teaching different doctrines at the same time, the question then begs, "What can anybody not believe by faith, and does this belief make anything true". This, l'd really love to know. In the absence of evidence truth is uncertain. Therefore, judgement or any decision making must be suspended. For this is the most honest thing a person can ever do. Anything more than this is merely presumptuous speculations that the religious world call faith. No wonder knowledge is the greatest enermy of faith and any religion!

What you said basically means nothing. The author of Harry Potter stating in the book, "This is a true story," does not make it true, just like the Bible making the claim that it is true is meaningless. Using a thing to describe or prove itself is garbage logic.

It's not about believing or not believing in absolute truth. Its about who can claim they have it. The conundrum is if u truly believe what the Bible says about humanity, u can't possibly believe we are capable of having absolutely truth. If a human being has absolute truth, what need is there for God? Just worship that person or ideal. Some Christians are so set to defend their faith and the Bible, they ignore the teaching of said Bible. Its sad. Good on David Crowder!

The professor explained the issue quite well. If I buy deconstruction, I have to start with the idea that there is no truth. If all knowledge is relative, then there is no foundation. For the Christian, our foundation is Christ. Because our foundation is Christ, that means we can ask questions and examine the word without fear. What Crowder is talking about it is simply evaluating your beliefs. I went through this myself trying to understand what scripture said versus what people, institutions, and culture say it said. It was extremely fruitful and rewarding.

It's deconstruction from the "church" establishment. Not Faith, God or Jesus.
It's not claiming that Truth is "relative" but rather claiming Truth to be Truer than what's taught in just about any given "church" USA.
If the Truth it to be known, then let it be known. Let the child come.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions (as many as the ears can here!) Especially when we are to count the cost as Jesus saids we should do.
We don't "go to church". We are the church. Where ever we go, there the church will be.
All things True will remain 💯
God-bless the deconstruction! It's no different than pruning or refining. Call it what you want, but let your yes be yes and your no be no as Jesus also has instructed.
The Truth shall set you free. Not what any given "church" or pastor etc. says is true but the simple Truth, God's Truth. Everything from 4 quarters make a dollar to Jesus is the son of God.

I'd never heard of this whole Deconstructing Faith thing before seeing the title of this video, but I did this when I was 19, back in 1989. I'd been a Christian since I was 5 and baptised by immersion when I was 12.
I was away at Bible college when the majority of my own faith deconstruction happened, although it started the year before in my last year of high school.
With me, I never actually doubted God or His Word. Rather, I was questioning WHY I was a Christian. Was I a Christian because it was something that was expected of me, or had it really been my own choice?
Well, I came to the conclusion - after much prayer and reading of the Bible and meeting with some friends and praying and talking with them - that I really and truly was a Christian because of my own choice.
I did come to a crossroads, knowing that I would either continue to follow Jesus with renewed devotion, or I would walk away.
Well, in the end, walking away was just not an option for me. So I recommitted my life to the Lord.
This time was absolutely a necessary part of my life, something that I needed to go through, and I don't regret it at all.

Clearly this guy is a progressive "Christian" who believes Jesus came to teach us simply to love others well. This is not a saving faith that will keep you from God's judgement. You must REPENT of you sin and place your faith in the Savior.

I think it's simple - he gave us his word - for these reasons - the moment these people start talking about their feelings, love this, love that, what is the meaning of [], personal this, I dont feel that, they are letting other things creep in and confuse them. God not only wants RELATIONSHIP - HE WANTS OBEDIENCE - Reading his word straightens all this "feelings" stuff out - OBEDIENCE is left out of the sermons of 90% of American Churches - these days - so your reading his word is all most have to lean on! I dont agree to ask your pastor - alot of these modern churches dont teach anything else but "relationship"

I see this as more of “Let me analyze the church I’m apart of and make sure what they’re preaching aligns with scripture.” Not all churches are created equal - not every pastor is meant to be in that position. We are human and our own egos can make a mess of things at times. There are folks who will take everything a pastor says and run with it, without cross referencing it with the word. I’m sure a lot of times it will check out, but we’d be foolish to think that every church in the world is preaching the word just as the Lord intended.

Secularists do not own the word 'deconstruct'. You should test doctrines to see if they meet the biblical standard (discernment, judge).... Catholics and other church's that rely on a dominant central power structure have issues with this idea, as it removes the priests/popes authority.

Becker says deconstruction has two assumptions behind it. 1: there is no absolute truth and 2: context trumps truth. I disagree. Deconstruction is about finding the actual truth by stripping away the baggage that power structures and fear have built on its foundation. It's somewhat like archaeology - digging in the dirt to find the gold. What today's evangelical context shows so clearly is that what we now call "Christianity" is simply not worthy of it's founder and his way. That doesn't mean there is no absolute truth, but rather that it has got buried. Probably under a pile of dirty power plays, politics, tribalism, fear and more.
I'm a Christian, but to be honest I'm embarrassed by what that label has come to mean - and I (and others like me) want to follow a path that more closely matches the original intent.

No, the root of the “Deconstructionist” new age belief is the spirit of rebellion, instead the deconstructionists want to justify their rebellion by using the church as their reason to rebel against the WORD OF GOD (the Bible), deconstruction is just a part of the “Great falling Away,” that was prophesied in the New Testament 2 Thessalonians 2:3

There are several ways to define the word, “Christian”.
    A follower of Jesus.
A person who believes Jesus is divine (worthy of our worship).
A person who has made a profession of faith in Jesus.
A person who seems to exemplify the traits of character that Jesus did.
A person who is learning to trust the Lord.
When people try to compile statistics with regard to how many Christians there are in the world, most or all of the statistics reflect the numbers of people who are “adherents” of religious organizations.
Most people (at least in the United States) think faith is believing something for which there is insufficient evidence - or none.
Another way to think of faith, however, is to define it as the evidence of things not seen - evidence of things we can’t observe with our natural senses and don't know how to measure with scientific instruments.
Humans gather more and more evidence as we mature. We gather evidence from the natural world and, in many cases, we gather evidence from what we read.
The more we read - or/and study the natural world - the greater the probability that our concept of the universe and the place of humans in the universe will change.
Take, for example, the observant Hebrew who memorizes significant portions of the Hebrew Bible as a child and as a teenager, learns how those scriptures have been interpreted by Hebrew sages for millennia but doesn’t read the Gospels or the Epistles until adulthood. One such person might just read the later writings and dismiss them as irrelevant to Hebrews. Another such person might perceive a profound connection between the Hebrew Bible and the later Greek additions to it.
Or let’s take the example of someone who is considered a Christian and hears a passage from the Psalms, a passage from the Gospels and a passage from the Epistles every week for several decades. Maybe that person has even been told that the Hebrew Bible is irrelevant for Christians. But then that person discovers a profound connection between those passages and the content of the Hebrew Bible.
If those people’s worldviews change because of exposure to additional sources of material that is considered “inspired”, that can be considered as “deconstructing faith”. But faith in what? Faith in what he was taught by Hebrew rabbis or by Christian clergy?
When I was a boy, my dad repeatedly urged me, “Read for yourself, study for yourself and think for yourself.” He gave me that advice after he had been doing that for twenty years. The result, for him, was that his understanding of Christianity was fundamentally different from that of his grandparents. Mine is similar to my dad’s understanding but if true faith accumulates evidence all along a faith journey, some concepts will evolve or, at the very least, the way a person describes those concepts is likely to change.
I entirely reject the idea that such changes in conceptualizing the universe and our place in it should be described as indicating that “he was never really a believer in the first palace.”
Reading the Bible from my youth more as Hebrews read it than as most Christians do means that my concepts differ from some basic ostensibly Christian assumptions - including assumptions of what or where or when “hell” is. To say so (as I’m doing here) is to ensure that many Christians will call me heretical but that’s OK. I’d rather be true to how I understand the Bible than to adopt doctrines that make no sense to me.
If anyone is interested, I can also address the question of what the majority of professed Christians think is meant by the words, “saved”, and, “salvation”.

    Remember the gospel.
The gospel is the foundation of our faith.
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭31-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

As someone who grew up in a legalistic church, left when I turned 17, and didn't know Jesus until I turned 39, I can understand what some of these folks are saying. Example: You can't "inherit" your parents' faith/religion and think it is a real relationship with Jesus. If He doesn't reveal Himself to you and you don't turn to Him and surrender, you're not a saved Christian. Period. So a person in that situation may need to prayerfully consider what their belief is apart from their parents.
I spent two decades living in the world not caring a thing about church, faith, God, Jesus, etc., though I did believe in God and respected my parents for their beliefs. I had no true understanding of any of it. I guess for me those two decades were my deconstruction period where everything I heard and learned growing up was cleansed from my heart and mind so when Jesus did get my attention I was able to accept Him without all the legalistic baggage. I certainly don't condone anyone just up and leaving their church like I did. That was God's plan for ME.
American Christianity has been soiled by the prosperity gospel, politics, commercialization, culture wars, and a host of other issues that have no place in the church. If I was a saved Christian and for some reason my influence was from one of these things I would likely need to "deconstruct" or separate myself from those influences in order to have an actual personal relationship with Jesus again.
As far as truth goes; it is a fact that our experiences in life shape what we believe to be true about nearly everything, but that has nothing to do with the truth of Jesus. The Old Testament and all of its commandments and rules were true for that time. Only the ones repeated in the New Testament are true for us today. Example; the mixing of materials to wear as clothing and the sacrifice of animals for our sins are no longer what we follow or believe, but sexual immorality is still a no-go. Regardless of what we believe to be true based on our life experiences, JESUS IS THE TRUTH. His life, death and resurrection and the purpose for it all is the truth. People need to stop looking at things from their perspective (get their eyes off themselves) and start looking at everything through the truth of the bible (keep their eyes on Jesus). My sister asked me how I could go back to the church we grew up in after everything that happened with the people there. I told her legalism is no longer an issue (alot changes in 22 years), that's where God led me to be, and if our eyes are on the people and not on Jesus we're looking at the wrong thing.

Another aspect of deconstruction not mentioned here is that thanks to the Internet, people are becoming more aware of the true history of the Bible, how it was written (and by whom), and how it all matches up (or doesn’t) with discovered history and archaeology. Many younger people also don’t ascribe to the mainstream messages and stances of Christianity that are considered conservative within political discussion circles. Ministers shouldn’t just be preaching watered down gospels and holding concerts for Jesus, but addressing these deeper issues and what it really means to follow Jesus. Like, why are there more books written about Jesus than appear in the Bible? Why are there more Jewish works than appear in the OT, like the Apocrypha books, or the Books of Enoch, the Book of Jubilee? Why were those books rejected from the canon? What strong proofs outside the Bible are there for the Resurrection? Was Gnosticism the true message of Jesus, or a corruption of the original stories and theology about Jesus? These are the kinds of things people are learning about on their own, making their own conclusions about them, with no guidance on the matter whatsoever from a Christian view or even a based historical perspective. It’s a part of the deconstruction process just as much as it is a philosophical rejection of current Christian dogma and doctrines.
