I know the video is 4 years too late. But, I'll be canceling cable TV soon and wanted to make a video that shows a perspective for some people that may have cable or satellite and simply forgot about the transition.

This video, although 8 years old, was EXTREMELY helpful, I've got an old CRT Television that I've had for quite some time, I used to use it to watch cable television but ever since we cancelled it I've never had the time to use it, or never had the care more like it, once I put away my old SNES and ATARI 2600 I never used it for anything, but after seeing this video I can finally start using it again as I've tracked down a shiny set of snap on rabbit ears like you've got (it has the mounting point for them) and I can still buy a converter box from some box stores, and I can finally enjoy watching the tube again!
Make sure you don’t leave it on by accident or else your gonna fokin die
my town has cheap cable xd
I always had a sweet spot for seeing an image through a CRT Television set. Although flatscreen HDTVS don't have an obnoxious ringing and usually have professionally put together guides, there was always something about a bulky CRT with those vibrant colors that triggered my nostalgia.
+Kindle I'm with you. I'm the same with VHS. I don't know what it is but man just seeing those scan lines and then it tracking into place and everything lol. I don't know. Maybe I'm crazy.
@@irancontraband4650 Indeed. And don't forget about the grainy picture with flashes of white specs and lower video quality. It is strangely satisfying.
@@irancontraband4650 Ooh and how it takes time to warm-up after turning it on.
Excellent video. I'm having enough trouble getting good reception on a digital TV set in my bedroom. I'm having to route things through an Xbox and a signal booster to get anything I actually want to watch.
My mum and dad chucked out our old CRT TV but I'd have use for it now for retro gaming.
Thank you so much! You explained everything so clearly and perfectly, that we resuscitated our old portable black and white TV. So awesome.
Thank you so much for this. I have an old tv with built in VHS that I wanted to use and I bought a converter box that doesn't mention using the co-axel cord, and I was clueless. Couldn't figure out how to get it to work! Thanks for helpin out an old lady with no technical skills!
What do you mean it doesn't mention using the co axel cord? Did not it not come with that cord or does it only use RCA cords?
Cynthia Jones You can either hook up the RCA yellow and white cables to the front inputs or the rf swirly screw in cable cord in the back. I recommend you use the front rca inputs if you wish to record programs. Also, you can still use the vcr part even without a converter box. Hope this will help.
I am so happy I found this video. my boyfriend just bought me at flea market a table top RCA victor Tv I was sOOOOO happy cause he knows I love vintage items Ur video is exactly what I was looking for omgoodness thank u can't wait to buy this pieces I need
You can use the red and white RCA jacks directly on the back of the converter box and connect that directly to a stereo. If you mean about the coax then yes, it doesn't have built in MTS (stereo encoder) built into the converter so it's coax is mono only.
Interesting that there are still technologies that bring CRT TVs back to life!
When digital TV started in UK the coverage was very poor until 2012 when the old analogue signals was turned off. Freeview UK said they only recommend outdoor TV Aerial/ Antenna as the portable or "rabbit ears" wasn't suitable anymore. which in most cases thats true unless you live very close or nearby a TV transmitter
+
I don't know if it's just because DVB sucks, or if there's a limit in the transmission power by the local government, but at least in ATSC areas it's not as bad. In Orlando I got around 70 channels with an attic antenna (not even on the roof). This includes subchannels of course. On the TV itself I got around 50ish.
i am not totally sure if in USA and Australia still use VHF in digital format as UK and Europe use UHF for DVB.. AKA Digital Video Broadcast
@@RobertHellierJapan, Brazil and the Philippines all use UHF for ISDB-T. Escecially 1SEG.
Still useful info
the thing is a "BALUN" for "BALanced to UNbalanced" converter. It gets pronounced as that.
The 2nd thing is also called "BALUN". A nifty thing about BALUNs is that they work both ways.
Converters usually output on CH3 or CH4 remind people to select that channel/
After you get the converter working do the "scan for channels" thing on it. It will be in its menu.
You may have to fiddle with the rabbit ears to get the most stable picture on any given channel.
I get about 100 channels on rabbit ears.
Your mileage may vary.
Time to say goodbye to analog TV for the last time tomorrow at 11:59 pm.

That's really good NTSC picture on that old tv..... way better than the flat screens :-)
You should be able to get an RF modulator for it, or if anything use a VCR to act as an RF modulator. I'm not in Britain, so I'm not familiar with VCR's there if they are the same as ours, but I'd assume they'd be able to modulate too.
Very true. I would have gone into that, but I didn't feel like pulling that all out, haha. But yes, you should go through the VCR if you have one, so you can use both, and tape the TV too.
Tht is perfect that you collected between the old and new technology
Once again, a cap may have went. You would be best to replace them. It may work. But in all honesty, these things are so cheap now these days it's better to just get a replacement. Digital Stream are one of the better ones.
I have a 1950's tv in my room and it works nice with the digital box
Post a video of it
TimmyTheUnicorn Prove it,it is not possible there are no more analog signal broadcasting in the tv air wave.100% all digital now.
TimmyTheUnicorn If you have cable tv not another story.
Sorry though you said without a digital box.
He said he was using a digital box, he has nothing to prove, he's already using his converter as Timmy said in his post.
UHF LOOP or a DTV antenna is fantastic for converter box.
Not certain, the plaque for the DOB was never stamped. Neither was the internal one.
5:53 wow almost No, analog waves going along the screen amazing
Digital broadcasts don't exhibit analog interference.
You can still watch cable if you use the 300 ohm to 75 ohm adapter to hook the coax up that's what I did with 1979 rca xl100
A lot of cable companies have ditched analog cable. Mine did before I canceled them.
I have an early 80s Quasar TV, this gave me the information I need to bring it back to life!
Wow the retro nostalga is real! Great vid.
Thank you for this video. What's the loud noise scratchy I'm hearing? More of a loud humming sound.
I just got a converter box today. I am going to route it to my sling box. Do I need to scan for over the air signals?
Great video. That's a nice Samsung set. I wouldn't call it "antique," but somewhat vintage.
Nice. I just picked up a ‘54 model Philco
You change the channels in the digital TV box or in the TV? the TV must always be in the 3 channel?
LookingMercury3D Yes, the digital box changes the channels, and the TV must be on 3 or 4, depending what you set the box to, for an output channel.
Ok.. It is basic like a CATV box, i have not used it because my LCD TV have is own DTV decodifier inside, just plug in the antenna and ready
Then you don't need it at all, why ask this question then? lol If you have a DTV, anything regarding a DTV converter is moot.
Curiosity.. That's all
Brandon MacEachern Orlando, Florida
Oh yeah VCRs work the same way over here. Except they have SCART sockets on them with composite on the front in some cases.
In fact I am using my VCR as a RF modulator so I can record TV. And also so I can feed the sound to my stereo.
My set top box for digital satellite does have a built in RF modulator, but the quality isn't that great and it's only mono.
I still have an older tv downstairs that I don't watch much anymore so I dont want to keep paying for the cable box. I have the digital converter box (still in the box) and I bought a new antenna. Now is the time to figure out how to hook the TV and VCR/DVD player up to avoid the $10/month box charge. Should have done it a while back.
Digital Stream boxes have just a few screws on the bottom of the unit. They don't usually however, have many replaceable parts.
Are the instructions pretty much the same if you want to hook the converter up to a VCR, DVD recorder, etc.?
i like your old tv question do you still get channels on your tv with your converter
For those with an HDTV, the instructions are even simpler! Just hook up the antenna, you're set to go!
Well yes, but this video isn't catering to those.
there are *some* HDTVs that doesn't include a built-in DTV converter.
Macky Clemen Then those are not HDTV's. Those are "HD Ready", and using this kind of DTV tuner is the WRONG tuner for those sets as it will not give you an HD picture.
Oh. I've been telling the wrong thing the whole time! Sorry for that. 😕
Aaaaand yes. This is designed for old CRTs whose screen's aspect ratio is 4:3.
(Funny thing that my grandparents tell me that the new converter box, which is SD, looks clear on a TV whose screen's aspect ratio is 16:9 😂)
Oh cool. This looks so simple and easy. Hmmm. Creative stuff.😊👍.
what if i have a tube television? is there any specifics to be done other than what is shown?
Well in the video I was using a tube television, so just do as I do. If you have only 300 ohms inputs, I'd just go ahead and get a 75/300ohm matching transformer as shown in the video, you will need one of those.
ok thank u just got the thing working today and its friggin huge XD
***** I bet it's heavy too. I love older sets, they are work horses. I have tried upgrading, but LCD's just don't have the charm, or character, and they also haven't been the most reliable. I'll keep my old set until I can't get parts anymore. I replaced the flyback in this TV and that repair has held up for quite a few years without so much as a single problem.
nice and it is heavy its maybe 3ft wide and 2ft tall roughly and its METAL got so many vacuum tubes in it it was near impossible to turn on
hell ya got to ceep the old TV's going
your videos are super useful
So you can't use the already on the TV connected antenna to the converter box to convert it to digital? I would've thought you could..... nvm rewatched video and can but need the little spade coaxial adapter
I got it to work. Thank you!
spent all day looking for these adapters and no one had them in stock so I dug through crap I had as a kid at my moms and found some😎
Radio shack has those adapters oops radio shack is gone!
Nice antique tv👍👍👍👍
Wow, Great Video.
I Was Stumped, Until I Found This, Its So informative. .
So technically Easy To Follow....thank God For UA-cam
My TV is frozen. Do I need to replace the converter box?
Correct, most are UHF.
It was easier for me to not hookup my bowtie antenna for this, as I have a weird combo balun for it.. Then again, I may remake this video with it, as it's more practical.
What if you have an RCA Model AFR 057 S it's a radio/black and white tv is this concept available?
How to hook up converter box plus digital adapter, dvd and vcr units?
You mean hooking up a dvd recorder/player, and a VCR? Well, if you want to record the programming coming off your converter box, you can either use the RCA yellow, white, red plug hook ups on the back of the unit, or plug your converter box's coax/cable connection output to the input of the VCR or DVD recorder/player that you want to have hooked up in between the tv and the converter box.
Here in Kuala Lumpur we will shift to Terrestrial DTV in 2014 as the transition works wayy too slow. Btw how many channels you got via terrestrial DTV in your area?
Nice video
GREAT tutorial! Thank you!
Does a RadioShack VHF,UHF,FM antenna work? Thanks !
For me, it did. You might need a signal booster though. Even then, it might not be necessary if you live in a suburb
I have become what I call a 'cord-compromiser', that is, having cable on one box only, and digital broadcast channels on others.
I got a question you may be able to help me out with. Or not, worth a try. I have Dish but I want one of these because I want to get some local channels Dish does not have. My Dish is not connected directly to the old TV though, it's this weird thing where it's coming from a receiver from another room. But anyway can a digital converter coexist with previously mentioned DIsh connection?
+Python Fatal you can use your dish dvr as a converter box
+rannz8 I get his question (got the same setup). He has no Dish DVR on that specific TV though, so using it as a converter box won't work. Fatal, you've got a UHF thing going. Yes, the digital converter box should be able to work regardless of the Dish hookup on the second TV because (I assume, and assume I am right) that your Dish is connected from the TV 1 receiver via coaxial cable. Simply connect the digital video converter to the second TV (with Dish already connected via cable) using those color coded RCA cables. That way it affects the second TV in no way and you just switch inputs.
I have a Visio high definition tv and the convertor box like you are using. How do I hook this up? Dish is locking out channel 11 or CBS and with Dish we can't watch that channel. My only choice is RCA cables and I have gotten a AV2HDMI adapter to go from RCA to HDMI to plug in with from the convertor box. Will this work on the high definition TV?
Outstanding how to video. thanks
Are those channel changing knobs?
Yes on the TV
Very good
Where did u buy that small antenna?
Feel the iviewHD rather easy to use,Stable, Smooth.
Excellent ! Very informative, thanks for the post.
would that depend what area your in or is it standard?
POV: everyone who had an analog tv on June 12, 2009.
Thanks for uploading. Now, 2 years after you made this, do you recommend that particular converter box or something else?
+James Walsh I still prefer this converter. I tried another one that was ultra cheap and it acted like it too, shutting off and turning itself on, etc.
+Brandon MacEachern Thanks for that info.
Very good _setps box
I have a tv from 1983 :)
I find all NTSC sets before 1987 to have unique color qualities, due to the change in the NTSC standard post 1987. For example, pre 87 sets show the sky in Super Mario Bros to be blue on the NES, but post 87 it looked purple due to the change. (Games programmed post 87 too into effect the change).
This also affected how certain shades of yellow looked too in television programs, etc. I just love anything pre 87, the standard in these sets were just so different, and pleasing to my eyes in my opinion.
oh so that's why dark pink becomes purple :)
Completely on the area. There's no law that says so many TV stations must broadcast in a given area. So it's entirely dependent on your area.
I want one of these with a headphone output as well as the rca. Do any exist that have headphone outputs?
No, but you could get RCA to headphone adapters.
Do you mind directing me towards the type of converter that you have for your antenna. I have a 1975 zenith chromacolor tv set. I just need the name or website that I can find that special type of converter for the antenna to the cable box thanks.
Do different areas have different Chanel's (like depending if you live near a big city) because since before the analogue shout down, 2009, we could never see any Chanel's on the tv with one of those antenas.
Every area will always have different channel lineups. It's broadcast, and depends which transmitters you are near.
Just hooked up my converter box and I cant get it off the program screen. I have read the book and I hate to say it but I DONT GET IT. Not sure why im not getting this but please help!
What is the converter make and model?
I have question. I have 1982 samsung bt 316 it has single wire antenna and another antenna deal that shaped like circle. Ok The adapter i bought like you specified has the 2 mount spots where wires off antenna mount into it. If my antenna just has one wire I just hook the one in? the other antenna wire is down on the jack in back and has only like 1 inch slack. can that other wire remain there? please advise.
They are called freeview box in the uk
What type of tv is that
Your video Helped me Hip Hip Hooray
Before remote controls the kids changed the channels with the knobs.
This SAMSUNG TV set have not CVBS input RCA/CINCH socket in yellow colour, RF modulator is required.
In France, integrated RF modulators are not provided, alls tv have CVBS input. Integrated RF modulators are only in CCIR B/G norm, no L/L' France norm.
Your STB use ATSC DTT standard. In Europe we use DVB norm.
In RF, EIA norm( USA, Canada, and Japan ) 525 lines 60 Hz, you use 75 ohms, only for VHF, and 300 ohms sockets for UHF, and an impedance transformer is required when RF modulators using UHF channels.
This digital adapter has the RF modulator built in, as explained in my video.
Yes, i have understood ! In all world RF modulators are built in, except France !
I have a Tv from 1978 black&white it works
Great video sir
Si te gatuanm
how many channels dose it get?
Does anyone know how to hook the converter box up to a portable tv ? Since my portable tv has a built in antenna would I just connect the coaxial cord from the converter box to the tv then I'll be okay?
Thanks for the help man getting a Teac HDB850 HD Set Top Box
Can i hook up that antenna? Thanks for the help in replying!!!
Awesome video! What year is that TV from?
+Jim Dayton 19" Samsung from 1985
Shark Record Films Sweet! I need more old woodgrain cased TV's
Jim Dayton Same here!
Shark Record Films I'd say my two favorite woodgrain cased TV's are the mid 80's-early 90's RCA Colortrak, and Sony Trinitron.
Jim Dayton I really like the mid to late 80's Simulated Wood-grain sets with the UHF/VHF Knobs on the side.
How do you hook this up to the flatscreen TV 2018 to now ??
Same, but instead of using a coaxial cable to the TV, you can use AV or HDMI.
I know it’s 2020 now but I’m hoping I can resurrect a 1977 Panasonic black and white. I’m guessing it’s 30 ohms. What is the type of transformer I would need?
excellent video
i got a ? cable man, i hooked my converter box up as directed, just like you did, after all settin up, its just keep saying NO SIGNAL , the t.v is in the basement, what do you suggest my next move be, i got the anttenna, hooked up. what did i leave undone
You are not getting the signal just by being in the basement use an external UHF antenna.
did u do a channel scan first? if not do that if u still got nothing then try a rooftop antenna you can find some at a pretty low price and they work pretty well
Great Vid,
would any DTA work? Ive got one brand new that my parents cable company sent but they dont need because they have digital receiver. I want to hook up to a digital antenna but i have a TV from the 90s (newer than the one in your vid).
Thanks
I'm using a Craig DTV tuner with a Sony TV, but it's not working, still? What's up with that?
Watching in 2021,, just could not deal any longer with the little antenna tv box so bought a new antenna (havent thrown out my half-broken rabbit ears yet tho), the (GB) Gesobyte Amplified HD Digital TV antenna Long 250+ Miles Range - Support 4K 1080p Fire tv Stick and All Older tvs from Amazon and the iView 3500STBIII, ATSC Digital Converter Box with Recording etc, also from Amazon. Me, the most mechanically challenged female on the planet, trust me. Got the antenna up, sticking to wall behind tv, managed to get tv on but it only goes to channel 2 (CBS) and I see no way to scan channels for set up. It must at least be on ch 3 tho bc it shows something and I can hear it on my old Sony Trinitron which I dont think has all those things on the back. It does have the thing for the coaxial cables. But wont change channels and ofc my son wants to watch DVDS, I have an extra set of those red, white and yellow cords. Help me please, what do I do next?? All help SOOO appreciated!! Thank you, wish I'd seen this first. >>PS Mike - Just bought these two items two days ago (5/26/2021) so if you recommend something else I can return these and get something else. Also you have my permission to email me at astralchyld@yandex.com, I could edit it out later but I trust you Mike! Thx again!! ~~Chanel
Did you get everything figured out?
@@freddieskelton752 Yes except for faves and have no usb for it yet. Coming soon tho. TY!!
I have switched from new back to old. I don't want to buy any more fragile cheapy flatscreen tv's anymore because they don't last very long around my small children. Even mounted a single strike of a toy leaves the screen bleeding... box tv's on the other hand are nearly 15-50 years old... basic is better!
Boy if my kids broke any of my tv's they ain't going to college
ok.thank you
this video help me so much
I'm glad it helped you out! Enjoy your free over the air TV service.
So now you can hook up roku if you want to....to the converter box?
No not at all. You need something entirely different for that (Either a Roku with composite out going to an RF modulator, or a Roku with HDMI only if you want a faster Roku, to an HDMI to composite converter, then to an RF modulator).
There is older Roku's that are AV compatible.
Hey sir what is the different & why they make 300 ohms & 75 ohms? Now I know why my toshiba tv I can't find the 75 ohm connector in the back or side of a tv.
300 ohms is the two screw terminals, and 75 ohms is the coaxial terminal. If your TV is from the 90's or above, you will have only 75 ohms to worry about.
I threw mine away and got a hard with built in tuner and fire tv stick
I love my TV. Thak you for help me.
What’s The name and model of that digital TV converter please
DTX9950 model number Digital stream Dta
I know what to do, but I am not getting a picture just snow, its a 1987 Emerson ecr139
Thank you very helpful
thank you so so much for this video, was really good and helpful, greetings from mexico
