Older glass is better, stop buying the latest most expensive lenses. That won't make you a better photographer :^) ( not directed at you specifically, just photographers in general)
The first lens I put money on is the 50mm 1.8f Prime Lens by Canon for my T6. I love this lens because not only does it shot beautiful shots for portraits and close ups, it’s limitations really stood out to me as my preferred style of shooting. I wanted wider shots. So the next lens I got was the 24mm Prime Lens, I get nice wider shots and now I get to shoot my subject in their environment with an 2.8f. So I lose a whole level of f-stop but it opened up a whole different genre of photography for me. I also recommend to look for used lenses so that you save yourself a couple of bucks, with hopefully little wear to them. Just my experience which hopefully helps another beginner photographer.
Landscape: Superwide 14mm or 24mm Macro: 1:1 90mm lens Street: 50mm prime Wildlife: 600mm prime sigma(because the canon/nikon one costs $13,000) Everything else: 70-200
do these recommendations change much for aps-c? as much as I wished to start out ballin with a full frame I ended up grabbing a used d5200 for a decent price. it hasnt even arrived yet but im stoked to start collecting.
Good Free Photos I own FF and APS-C bodies, and all of my lenses, are L series. They all work top notch, you just have to take crop factor in consideration.
Quick question! What would you prefer between a 70-200 f2.8 with a x1.4 extender and a 70-300 f4. Both intended to use for wildlife photography. Do you think the extender compromises the sharpness, focus and quality of the image? I have never used an extender so I’m not sure how good this might work.
I’ve been doing amateur photography for years and getting into video now. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve revisited this video. Thank you for helping me continue my passion, Pete
Hey Peter, I'm a first-year film student and am finding your vids so helpful in support of the stuff I'm learning in lectures. Thanks so much! Keep them coming! :)
just found your channel because I'm really starting to love photography, and I can already tell the videos and information you put out are gonna help me tremendously as I try and figure this stuff out.
All my professional photo and video needs have been met for the last few years using just the Sigma 35mm f1.4 art lens, the Canon 85mm f1.8 USM lens, and occasionally renting the 14mm, the 16-35mm f2.8 L ii and 70-200mm 2.8 L ii if the job requires it. That being said, with the shift towards Sony for video work, I do find myself looking at the plethora of lenses on the market once again, wishing I was 10 grand richer. Damn you, 4K!
I had the Sigma 35 f/1.4 Art but since I'm on APS-C I replaced it with the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Art to save me switching lenses, and haven't missed it since. As incredible as the 35 Art was, the 18-35 is just as sharp and the bokeh is a lot better.
Ozzy what are your thoughts on the 18-35? More specially for photography, been looking at it for quite a while and am currently selling my 10-18 and 50mil to buy it :)
Great vid! When I got my first Canon, I started with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm L-series lenses. Together, they gave me solid coverage. I’ve since added lenses, but these two are still major “go tos” for me.
My favorite lens has to be the 24-70 becuase it just never leaves my camera. I do second the 70-200 because I shoot a lot of sports and wildlife when I am not shooting portraits. These two lenses are just a great way to cover pretty much everything.
Just bought a 6D mk2. I want to buy one amazing lens to begin with; I’m digging on 50mm 1.2. But then...maybe 24-70 L is a good all around to learn from?
I watched this video 6 years ago when I first considered photography as a hobby, now I make a living shooting weddings and selling prints, much love you and your work Pete!
This video actually taught me a lot and I want to thank you for that! I love photography but I've basically taught myself and some of the things you say in your videos sounds like another language but slowly but surely I will understand more and more about the technology and language of photography. I shoot with a Nikon D3200 and I feel as though I've captured some awesome photos with it but I got that camera not knowing shit about photography but at this point in my life I am looking into buying a Sony a7s ii or a Canon of some sort
I've been doing photos as a hobby for about 1 year now. I got the standard started kit Canon Rebel T6 with the basic glass. I picked up a 50mm 1.8 and can't get enough of the lense. The versatility for portraits is awesome
Peter, I need to thank you. I was re-watching this video moments before window shopping lenses on Amazon I cannot afford and discovered their prime day camera pricing fiasco. I got my first full frame (6Dii) and the 24-70 f2.8 for a combined $200. It would have taken me well over a year to earn that. It's because of this video that I wholeheartedly thank you, Peter.
looking back at this now mid 2021, gets me excited. His videography improved so much and it gives me hoping know my stuff may not be great today, but it might be great with 4 years more of experience lol.
Dude you are just amazing!! You inspire me so much, i just wanna buy my dream lens and go out and get some awesome pictures. Thanks man! For these outstanding nice videos! :D
heya Peter, first of all i love your content. it's awesome. I have a question though. I'm an amateur Photographer, it' s the best hobby there is butt sometimes i just don't have any inspiration. Could you make a video about how, where and when you get inspiration for your photos what do you do when you don't know what to make or do! I would love to see that. thanks very much and keep up the good work !!!
When you want inspiration for pictures, go on google and type in movie poster. If youre searching for inspiration for some videos, go on youtube and search for people like casey neistat, sam kolder, or me ;D (just kidding). There are so many ways to get more inspiration, i mean you have the internet Bas.. let me know if it helped you :)
Just as everyone knows the most meticulously explained, mind enriching information, critically inspirational and sensationally entertaining videos on one single channel - Peter Mckinnon. Thank you so much for your efforts, Really helped me a lot in shifting, developing, planning, reshaping and sustaining my ideas. I am on the verge of starting 2 channels need a desperate help in selecting lens. Please suggest would you recommend will be the best focal lengths or ideal lens for: 1) Shooting sharp closeup mouthwatering macro over the top & 40 Degree footage while cooking on the heat. 2) Cinematic Brolls, Slow motion while cutting, chopping, pouring, slicing and prepping the food. 3) Host/Talent presenting prescriptive style narration during intro, in between and ends to explain tips and techniques to fast prep, cook and present the dish 4) Standing next to white goods and talking to camera videos and just the host standing and talking to camera and texts popping on screen to expain pointers. Can any one lens do all the 4 or can I select a combination of just 2 lenses to get all these done? Note; I have a sony A7iii with kit lense 28-70 3.5 to 5.6. For Cooking, Brolls, over the top counter , food closeup. 1) Fe 90 MM Macro F2.8 2) FE 16-35 F2.8 GM For Host talking to cam: 1) FE PZ 24- 135 F4 OSS Cine or 2) 24 - 70 F2.8 G Peter please enlighten as you have always been doing. Thanks in Advance! Big Regards. Sanjay
i love your videos always learning something new i bought a camera 2 months ago and now i do photography and video and im 13 years old and im already getting some jobs thank you so much for your amazing videos so keep posting your amazing videos always learning more
Nikon body. For budget photographers Nikon gives more features in cheap crop sensor DSLRs, better build quality and much better sensors. I have over 55,000 shots on my D3300 including sports, portraits, northern lights, the milky way, scenery, etc... It also takes great video (1080p 60FPS). Many 3rd party lens manufactures such as Tamron, Tokina, Sigma, Rokinon etc... make good lenses (sometimes better than Canon and Nikon) at much lower prices.
Same, I’m 13 and have just started and photography is definitely something I’m gonna do for the rest of my life, maybe not as a job maybe a hobby but I absolutely love it. It just seems so confusing for a young kid with all of the things I’m supposed to know to take one photo but I’m taking it upon me to learn as much as possible.
0:20 3 Questions I need to ask myself. Q. Are you Shooting Photo or Video? Me: Both... Q. What's your subject? Me: Oceans, Food and streets. Q. What's your Price range? Me: $0 - $200 Please help... Im new to cameras and I don't know anything about lenses.
Friendly creep. Canon makes a travel bundle for around that price, and it includes a 50mm 1.8 (great for portraits), and a 10-18 (great for travel, and streets). The bundle is only $350.
Wooowwww thanks for the quick easy illustration using Matty. Even him and his face were made handsomer lol That part summarised the whole video for me.
Love my 85 art that and the 50 otherwise canon L 35mm mk2 is amazing. Then 24-70 70-200 and my 400 5.6 ultra sharp and on a 1dx mk2 with 1.4 ex you get auto focus and it’s sharp as. Light weight as no iS yet the iso these days allows good speed. But a 100 macro is one of canon sharpest 100 2.8 L full frame then switch 1:1 macro new one IS so maybe I need to go upgrade. But the 400 is overlooked as no is yet I’ve used for surfing birds jet fighters. Yet carry on apouch on a belt. 😎👍🇦🇺
@rob ---lens whacking is when you put your favourite lens in a sock and swing it at people hoping to score a direct hit.It is a little known international sport.I wonder if Henrys cameras could give us some insight on which is the best sock to use as there are so many colours amd materials available, the choice for beginners to this sport is bewildering.Thank you.
Hello Peter! Thank you very much for your videos! Doesn't matter how long your vidoes are, they are so full of expertise, entertainment and positive energy that I have become addicted. Have to watch all of them to become a really good vlogger and film maker.
thanks for this video man, Im a student at TFS and i finally bought myself a canon rebel T3 and want my shots to look as fantastic as possible, this video was very helpful, see ya around man.
Please help me! I am new and apsc (80d) user, want to upgrade to fullframe, are 5dmkii is still working good (or what u prefer for newbie user prices)? And what lens good for me? (not necessary l lens type) Nb: - iam shoot everything (mostly portrait, street & lanscape) - i am not grandiose for upgrade, love my process
I really learned a lot by watching your videos and I'm very grateful to you. :) I'm not a professional but photography has always been a passion and I really want to put my heart and time into it. ^^ I'm still struggling in choosing which camera to buy (not a very expensive one but great for beginners like me) ... But anyway, keep it up man! Your videos really helps a lot so thank you !
Mynxun Lee I recently bought the Canon M50 and I love it! Its such an awesome entry level camera and has everything I need.. Have you decided on which one you will get?? All the best to you 😊
"okay so you've heard everything that I've had to say so far, but you're still thinking 'I don't know what lens to get. what do I do? Just tell me what I should do." -- hahah literally reading my mind.
I was shouting "please put the lens down " when you was waving that 200 to 400 around. 😂 you just about gave me a heart attack. Love the video like always man.
Hi Peter, Strong content but all of this only apply to full frame body. what about APS-C ? i've recently buy an old 35mm/f2 (not the IS, not the USM, the light one) to have a 50mm like on my 70D. also, what about the test on DxO ? do you use them ?
I've been following over a year, and truly appreciate all the sharing of knowledge, and the included inspiration. I am rather restricted by budget, but rich in desire. I recently sold a guitar that wasn't receiving any love, and purchased a Canon 85 1.8. On a recent trip to Ottawa and Old Montreal I decided that was going to be the lens to stay on the camera. Much better than the 18-135 kit lens! Thanks again for all the inspiration! Next up? Looking at 24-70 f2.8, 50mmf1.4, 70-200 f2.8.
So I have been here before 1080p and before the first 1'000 views. Does anybody care? Nope, but it feels just good! Have a great day everyone and you Pete, you should borrow me some of your lenses ;-) I won't tell your friend....I promise!
Good advice on filters, Peter. I worked at/managed camera stores in SoCal for over 23 years (that was 20 years ago) and to show the difference between a good and a cheap filter I'd hold a cheap filter in front of me in one hand and a multi-coated filter in the other. They could see that the cheap filter reflected so much light you could barely see me standing behind it and the better filter was considerably more transparent. I brought into the store B+W filters to have something the equal to Hasselblad filters for other medium format camera brands and they ended up being the most popular filter brand we carried for all the cameras with a threaded front. We had some Heliopan filters too, Hoya multi-coated, and some Tiffen. I'd try to have the customer match the quality of the filter to that of the lens so that on a cheaper Sigma/Tamron/Tokina lens I'd recommend a better quality multi-coated Hoya. For the Canon or Nikon I'd recommend the Nikon or B+W. (a lot of Canon filters at the time weren't all that great) One interesting test I did, and maybe you might do a vlog showing this, was to lay out various polarizing or neutral density filters and place them on a piece of white paper to show that some brand filters had a color cast to what should be a neutral gray. (one brand had a very noticeable greenish cast, some other brands were cooler or warmer gray.) There's also the brass rings on the B+W that help prevent filters from getting stuck on a lens. There's the optical clarity of the glass, B+W and Heliopan used Schott brand glass which was, and might still be, the most optically clear glass used on filters there is. There's the flatness of the glass and even thickness. Now there are new nano coatings, tougher coatings, coatings that supposedly shed dirt/dust/or fingerprints easier. Then there are the holder/slip in type of filters like Cokin, Lee (what I used on my medium format camera) and other outrageously expensive, but very high quality filters from small custom manufacturers.
Thumbs up for the Bazooka lens! :)
yoooo
Peter McKinnon so much lens, panic attack
Peter McKinnon that thing brings a whole nother level of intensity to shooting your car, your house, your dog, your wife, your kids! lol
Peter McKinnon some day i'm gonna get it, and I will hit someone with it

*Sees pictures from the 16-35 mm*
*Pulls up amazon*
*Closes Amazon immediately after seeing price*
lmao right!
😂
Older glass is better, stop buying the latest most expensive lenses. That won't make you a better photographer :^) ( not directed at you specifically, just photographers in general)
And lol me too

Camera shop: Hey Peter, what lens do you want to buy?
Peter: Yes

I bet the guys at Henry's had a hard attack watching you wave that big ass lens up and down, back and forth....poor guys.
I was just thinking the same thing
@@brettfowl1208 me too hahaha
a hard attack
I'm going to paint a red line around my Canon lenses to make it look like I have better lenses than I actually do.
then sell them ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Some pros over up there red marking for safety reason but I have thought of doing this too!
Dennis Osipov made my day😂
Already done this long time ago. Now I have 18-55 3.5-5.6 L lens. Also 40D with 5D Mark II strap.
Try a thin red rubber band instead of paint! Also only needs one rubber band that can be interchanged between lenses :-D
Landscape: Superwide 14mm or 24mm
Macro: 1:1 90mm lens
Street: 50mm prime
Wildlife: 600mm prime sigma(because the canon/nikon one costs $13,000)
Everything else: 70-200
do these recommendations change much for aps-c? as much as I wished to start out ballin with a full frame I ended up grabbing a used d5200 for a decent price. it hasnt even arrived yet but im stoked to start collecting.
I think you can find the same lenses for APS-C cameras. My recommendation is always to use APS-C lenses for APS-C Cameras and FF for FF cameras.
Good Free Photos I own FF and APS-C bodies, and all of my lenses, are L series. They all work top notch, you just have to take crop factor in consideration.
that's true, the L series does work for both.
Forgot 35mm for portrait use.
when peter says somethings expensive, you know its expensive
Thank you Christian Bale, u are my favourite actor ever!
Funny as.
Misho Amoli thank you Gareth Bale. Great Footballer. Did not know you were into photography as well
First time i have watched a 15 min video without skipping even a bit... Amazing.
I knowww riiight?? he's a born communicator.. I usually hate enthusiastic people, but he's actually pleasant!!
Dcvbkyrsscbgdsxcgf That's what I'm saying lol
Same here. I even backed up a few times to make sure I got all of the numbers for the suggestions correct so I could go research them more.
I second this!!
damn i even rewinded a bit on some parts to watch again
Always THE BEST Content.

100%
Yeah and whenever Peter starts I'm like am I watching Peter or Chris Ramsey
Your comment is 3 years old
Me: saving up for my nifty fifty
Pete: pulling a trolley of L glass

Great to hear man! How are things going?
Hey Peter, I'm a first-year film student and am finding your vids so helpful in support of the stuff I'm learning in lectures. Thanks so much! Keep them coming! :)

try out the newer Canon 85 mm f1.4. you will never ever ever want to touch the 1.8 anymore.

BAZOOKA LENS FOR THE WIN!
This was beyond useful information. So to be clear, 24-70 mm is like a sweet spot? Someone correct me if I am wrong...
Michael Levette yea, always depends tho. I use a 12-40 mm f2.8 for most of my stuff but 24-70 is also a very good range
Your videos are so fresh and binge-worthy. Congrats Peter from a fellow Ontarian.
LucasGrowsBest Binge-worthy! Yes, and NOT cringe-worthy, which is awesome 😎

3 Questions I need to ask myself.
Q. Are you Shooting Photo or Video?
Me: Both...
Q. What's your subject?
Me: Oceans, Food and streets.
Q. What's your Price range?
Me: $0 - $200
Please help... Im new to cameras and I don't know anything about lenses.
Food and Street can be done really well with a 50mm f/1.8 which is around $100-$150.
Jonathan Najarro do you have a recommendation for me.
Both video and photos
Subjects?
People, travel, streets
Price range: 0$ - 400$
Friendly creep. Canon makes a travel bundle for around that price, and it includes a 50mm 1.8 (great for portraits), and a 10-18 (great for travel, and streets). The bundle is only $350.

I think I've watched this video 3 or more times and it always helps me more and more for everytime! Great work!!
Finally, after months of research I know all I need thanks to this video, thank you Peter!
One of these days you should do a tutorial on how you did your motion graphics for your intro! Good stuff!
You could assault somebody with this lens! Best part of the whole video! Keep up the great work.
just bought a canon 70D coming on the 27th Bam hope its BEaST!
William Halpin how much did u buy it for?
Thanks for breaking it down and talking to the newbie's!! Greatly appreciated.
On your opinion which canon 800d lens excellent for video. Thank u in advance
I shoot portraits mainly, and I love the sigma art 85mm 1.4 on a full frame body. The bokeh is like butter!
I read the end like "the bokeh is like fuhrer"
hehe, have you tried the Canon 85 mm 1.4 with IS? that is money...
Sigma 135mm is amazing, the bokeh is delish
Expensive!
Speaking of lenses, can you do an episode on lens whacking? curious to hear your take on it.
Thanks!
What the fuck is that? haha
"This could be a hat for a small child".... LOL love it
This is one of the most insightful and concise video's about this particular subject on UA-cam. Thank you.

Good choice. I love my nifty fifty.
Gonna pick up the Tamron 24-70 soon mostly because it's stabilized and more affordable than the cannon.

When he mentioned the urban exploration part, that was exactly what I am looking for so that you so much Peter
Thanks man! I’ve always put shitty glass filters onto moderately expensive lenses! Will invest in the real deal going forward

I highly recomend the canon 50mm 1.4 and the 35mm 2.8 as all around prime lenses
Hello Peter! Thank you very much for your videos! Doesn't matter how long your vidoes are, they are so full of expertise, entertainment and positive energy that I have become addicted. Have to watch all of them to become a really good vlogger and film maker.

By far the best “what lens is best” video I’ve seen. Lenses are tools, choose the best tool for the job. Simples.
Thank you Jon Snow! I think that 16-35mm looks like can do the job really well for vlogging 👍
Just seeing this, in 2019, STILL RELEVANT!! 👊👊👊👊👊👊👊 Thanks!

Sankalp Sadhwani yes we need it
Music is dope on this video. Thanks Pete
What would you recommend for travelling as a all-time-on lens?
Especially more the 24-27 or 24-105?
16-35
Pete... Thanks for being sharp and helpful. You are one of the few on UA-cam who are actually any help with stuff like this!
I come back to this vid every few months and have re watched it like 8 times but this is just such an informative video
Sam Devey literally same, this is like my 5th timr
Pete: I don’t have that much money for lens...
Room and shelves at the background in other videos: why are you lying???...
...
Love you!
Hi Peter, Strong content but all of this only apply to full frame body. what about APS-C ? i've recently buy an old 35mm/f2 (not the IS, not the USM, the light one) to have a 50mm like on my 70D. also, what about the test on DxO ? do you use them ?
Count Zero Dont trust DxO , just a do test urself
Count Zero all of these lenses will work on APS-C bodies, you just have to take crop factor in consideration!
Great video, I always enjoy your content and it helps me with creating video for my own channel.
Like the video, nice job explaining in this short video for a very large subject to explain. Nice job pm
Please suggest me a lens for recipe video for Canon 80d
Everytime I walk into henrys I have to leave my wallet in the car
SAME! "I'll take one of everything please!"
haha yes!
jackmodz hah
jackmodz 😂😂
where do you park your car...? ;-)
In terms of image quality, would you say the canon 16-35 is better than the sigma 18-35?
I'm a beginner and I always get so overwhelmed when it comes to lenses this really helped me to have something to go off of haha
Its true same here! Which lens are you using mostly now?
Just swooped a canon T7. Shots come out pretty crispy, thanks for your great and informative content bud. ✌🏾 from Alaska
Love watching your video's and thumb for all the video because peter mckinnon I am so big fan of you love you bro love your style keep it up ♥♥♥
So I have been here before 1080p and before the first 1'000 views.
Does anybody care? Nope, but it feels just good!
Have a great day everyone and you Pete, you should borrow me some of your lenses ;-)
I won't tell your friend....I promise!
Omfg when he tried to throw the 400mm my heart literally stopped
I love your tutorial. First you talk too much but at the end of the day all the things you taught make sense. Thumbs up.
(a lot of Canon filters at the time weren't all that great)
One interesting test I did, and maybe you might do a vlog showing this, was to lay out various polarizing or neutral density filters and place them on a piece of white paper to show that some brand filters had a color cast to what should be a neutral gray. (one brand had a very noticeable greenish cast, some other brands were cooler or warmer gray.)
There's also the brass rings on the B+W that help prevent filters from getting stuck on a lens.
