I keep coming back to this video, probably my 20th time. The more I know about urushi, and the more urushi pens I do, the better I understand the skills of this Artist. Even preparing the pen for his work is still a very difficult thing, and probably is done by his apprentice with "only" 10 years of experience.

The pen is worth every penny the workmanship is second to non I had to watch a second time around with the speed of the play back slowed down to 75% just so,I could watch the workmanship of the paint brush the layers of gold and then silver along with platinum makes the pen expensive but it is his talent that he has put into it that has made it priceless I could watch this type of art work all day every day just so I could learn from him.

It's vital that this traditional art is not only preserved but training the next generation of craftsperson to take this to an even higher level.

Thank you so very much. Sadly, while I learned of the techniques for painting on wood (about them and the artistry), when I lived in Japan 1968-69, I did not have an interest in fountain pens. A Japanese student sent me a gift of the commercialized Maki-e (a Pilot pen selling in the $150-$180 range), and I treasure it because he was one of my favorite graduates. Yet, while I knew these special artists, likely considered National Treasures themselves, did incredible work, your video really brought it all to life. Dating to a period before William the Conqueror brought Normandy to England, it is special indeed!

Wonderful ! This Mikado set created by Mr Ito is top range in the traditional Kyo Maki-e. I had the oportunity to hold and admire all three pens before handing them over to a collector. Maki-e is incredible and as Bernard Lyn wrote " Maki-e is an art for the soul". The time spent is merely a Western way to look at it. It is the heritage of craftmanship, dedication, perseverance and talent that makes this Maki-e what it is: outstanding.

SE QUE NUNCA TENDRÉ UNA PIEZA ASÍ, PERO ESTOY SEGURA , QUE MI MANO AL SOSTENERLA TEMBLARÍA COMO UNA HOJA DE PAPEL… SOLO PARA ARTE SUPREMO Y POESÍA, DEBE SER UTILIZADA UNA PIEZA , DE TANTO VALOR ANCESTRAL . GRACIAS AL SR. ITO Y AL PUEBLO DEL JAPÓN , POR HEREDARNOS LA DELICADEZA DEL ARTE SIN IGUAL… DIOS, BENDIGA Y PROTEJA A SU PUEBLO 🙏🏻♥️🌹

I think these fountain pens are true works of art, like a painting on canvas can be. It is beautiful to watch the work done by a real person and not by machines that print as if we were all the same.

The artistry here is priceless. The years of experience this Japanese master craftsman has invested in his work would put most other cultures to shame. It’s no surprise why one of these pens can cost upwards of 30 thousand US dollars.

It takes 7 days just for a quick cure of the layers. If I'm not wrong, it takes 14 days to completely cure a layer. Some layers are half-cured so they are tacky but won't smudge when powders are applied. Combined everything, and it can take easily 6 months to a year for 1 pen, depending on the detailing.

I may partially agree with some of the "dis-likers" on a conceptual level : what's the fucking use of all this painstaking effort and meticulous accuracy?
For a "pen" ? Probably costs a few thousand dollars, some that some fat-ass would show it off while signing contracts !
