I was just watching some English UA-cam videos on traditional beekeeping when I stumbled on this documentary, just to immediately laugh, because I had no idea this was about a beekeeper in Germany. Let alone from the region I live in! Now I am even more exited to watch it!
1. In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful. 2. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. 163. Your God is one God. There is no god but He, the Benevolent, the Compassionate. 255. Allah! There is no god except He, the Living, the Everlasting. Neither slumber overtakes Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except as He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not burden Him. He is the Most High, the Great. 11. Originator of the heavens and the earth. He made for you mates from among yourselves, and pairs of animals, by means of which He multiplies you. There is nothing like Him. He is the Hearing, the Seeing. 1. Say, “He is Allah, the One. 2. Allah, the Absolute. 3. He begets not, nor was He begotten. 4. And there is none comparable to Him.” 3. He sent down to you the Book with the Truth, confirming what came before it; and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel. 4. Aforetime, as guidance for mankind; and He sent down the Criterion. Those who have rejected Allah’s signs will have a severe punishment. Allah is Mighty, Able to take revenge. 5. Nothing is hidden from Allah, on earth or in the heaven. 6. It is He who forms you in the wombs as He wills. There is no god except He, the Almighty, the Wise. 1. Praise be to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who disbelieve ascribe equals to their Lord. 14. Say, “Shall I take for myself a protector other than Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, and He feeds and is not fed?” Say, “I am instructed to be the first of those who submit.” And do not be among the idolaters. 19. Say, “What thing is more solemn in testimony?” Say, “Allah is Witness between you and me. This Quran was revealed to me, that I may warn you with it, and whomever it may reach. Do you indeed testify that there are other gods with Allah?” Say, “I myself do not testify.” Say, “He is but One God, and I am innocent of your idolatry.” 100. Yet they attributed to Allah partners-the sprites-although He created them. And they invented for Him sons and daughters, without any knowledge. Glory be to Him. He is exalted, beyond what they describe. 101. Originator of the heavens and the earth-how can He have a son when He never had a companion? He created all things, and He has knowledge of all things. 102. Such is Allah, your Lord. There is no god except He, the Creator of all things; so worship Him. He is responsible for everything. 103. No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision. He is the Subtle, the Expert. 104. “Insights have come to you from your Lord. Whoever sees, it is to the benefit of his soul; and whoever remains blind, it is to its detriment. I am not a guardian over you.” 1. Glorifying Allah is everything in the heavens and the earth. He is the Almighty, the Wise. 2. To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. 3. He is the First and the Last, and the Outer and the Inner, and He has knowledge of all things. 4. It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then settled over the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth, and what comes out of it, and what descends from the sky, and what ascends to it. And He is with you wherever you may be. Allah is Seeing of everything you do. 5. To Him belongs the kingship of the heavens and the earth, and to Allah all matters are referred. 6. He merges the night into the day, and He merges the day into the night; and He knows what the hearts contains. 7. Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and spend from what He made you inherit. Those among you who believe and give will have a great reward. 8. What is the matter with you that you do not believe in Allah, when the Messenger calls you to believe in your Lord, and He has received a pledge from you, if you are believers? 9. It is He who sends down upon His servant clear revelations, to bring you out of darkness into the light. Allah is Gentle towards you, Most Compassionate. 16. And mention in the Scripture Mary, when she withdrew from her people to an eastern location. 17. She screened herself away from them, and We sent to her Our spirit, and He appeared to her as an immaculate human. 18. She said, “I take refuge from you in the Most Merciful, should you be righteous.” 19. He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord, to give you the gift of a pure son.” 20. She said, “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, and I was never unchaste?” 21. He said, “Thus said your Lord, `It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for humanity, and a mercy from Us. It is a matter already decided.'“ 22. So she carried him, and secluded herself with him in a remote place. 23. The labor-pains came upon her, by the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, “I wish I had died before this, and been completely forgotten.” 24. Whereupon he called her from beneath her: “Do not worry; your Lord has placed a stream beneath you. 25. And shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards you, and it will drop ripe dates by you.” 26. “So eat, and drink, and be consoled. And if you see any human, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, so I will not speak to any human today.'“ 27. Then she came to her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have done something terrible. 28. O sister of Aaron, your father was not an evil man, and your mother was not a whore.” 29. So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to an infant in the crib?” 30. He said, “I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture, and made me a prophet. 31. And has made me blessed wherever I may be; and has enjoined on me prayer and charity, so long as I live. 32. And kind to my mother, and He did not make me a disobedient rebel. 33. So Peace is upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the Day I get resurrected alive.” 34. That is Jesus son of Mary-the Word of truth about which they doubt. 35. It is not for Allah to have a child-glory be to Him. To have anything done, He says to it, “Be,” and it becomes. 36. “Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.” 37. But the various factions differed among themselves. So woe to those who disbelieve from the scene of a tremendous Day. 38. Listen to them and watch for them the Day they come to Us. But the wrongdoers today are completely lost. 39. And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded. Yet they are heedless, and they do not believe. 40. It is We who will inherit the earth and everyone on it, and to Us they will be returned. 41. And mention in the Scripture Abraham. He was a man of truth, a prophet. 42. He said to his father, “O my father, why do you worship what can neither hear, nor see, nor benefit you in any way? 43. O my father, there has come to me knowledge that never came to you. So follow me, and I will guide you along a straight way. 44. O my father, do not worship the devil. The devil is disobedient to the Most Gracious. 45. O my father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Gracious will afflict you, and you become an ally of the devil.” 46. He said, “Are you renouncing my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will stone you. So leave me alone for a while.” 47. He said, “Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you; He has been Kind to me. 48. And I will withdraw from you, and from what you pray to instead of Allah. And I will pray to my Lord, and I hope I will not be disappointed in my prayer to my Lord.” 49. When he withdrew from them, and from what they worship besides Allah, We granted him Isaac and Jacob. And each We made a prophet. 50. And We gave them freely of Our mercy, and gave them a noble reputation of truth. 7. Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you know for sure. 8. There is no god but He. He gives life and causes death-your Lord and Lord of your ancestors of old. 9. Yet they play around in doubt. 10. So watch out for the Day when the sky produces a visible smoke. 11. Enveloping mankind; this is a painful punishment. 12. “Our Lord, lift the torment from us, we are believers.” 13. But how can they be reminded? An enlightening messenger has already come to them. 14. But they turned away from him, and said, “Educated, but crazy!” 15. We will ease the punishment a little, but you will revert. 16. The Day when We launch the Great Assault-We will avenge. 35. O Children of Adam! When messengers from among you come to you, relating to you My revelations-whoever practices piety and reforms-upon them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. 36. But as for those who reject Our revelations, and are too proud to accept them-these are the inmates of the Fire, where they will remain forever. 111. And say, “Praise be to Allah, who has not begotten a son, nor has He a partner in sovereignty, nor has He an ally out of weakness, and glorify Him constantly.” Read The Quran
Georg Klindwort jun. has recently died according to an orbituary published in a north German bee keeper's magazine. He changed the apiary into a more modern one once he had taken over from his father but reputedly kept on having some colonies in skeps.

Yup. In the early days of cartoons these were much more common, and the people who made the early cartoons grew up in an era before the modern Langstroth hives took the market share.
This type of hive not recommended these days (unfortunately) but I LOVE these films. These beekeepers do everything by hand and their materials are virtually free! I love their Smokers too. Amazing how people and farmers were pure craftsman back then.
Why do they need to be inspected? Government needs to get their cut off the top? Just another unnecessary regulation! Skeps were good for hundreds (maybe thousands of years).
Fabulous! I am a novelist writing an adventure trilogy for YA called Quest for the Golden City. It is in a medieval setting. My main characters will spend a chapter working with an apiarist. Now I have a better idea of the kinds of things they will be doing. This video has really helped me understand about skeps, honey production, and wax. Thank you so much for the info!

This is one of the most fascinating documentaries I have ever seen! This is my third viewing and I've recommended it to my club. It reminds me of when they taught us to multiply with Roman numerals. Yeah, you can do it that way, even build an impressive civilization upon it. Yet, I think the way we do it now is a distinct improvement. Besides, I moved off the farm so that I would never have to be elbow deep in cow manure again.
@ObamfSPIKE Yeah, I feel you. I'll take dumb physical labor any day over insanity-inducing mental labor. Physical labor hurts sometimes. It's hot and uncomfortable and dirty, but all that is mind over matter. I can force myself to get out of bed and move hay bales or something no matter how badly I slept the night before. But ask me to program software or write a memo on no sleep? Forget it. My brain just says "Screw you, not happening today!".
As with everything, the process is now much more efficient and mechanized. But nothing is keeping you from keeping bees in skeps. There is nothing about a wooden box that makes it a "bee hive."
@@justinboyens6082 Sounds like one should do what's right rather than what's legal, for there are no inspectors in the woods checking the hives in the trees.
@@robertmabry6998 Not the majority, the majority leaves with the prime swarm that they catch again. It's also not neccessary to kill the bees to harvest. You can drum / shake them into a different skep.
@@weirjwerijrweurhuewhr588the primary swarms aren't around when the honey harvest occurs. The bees that produce the honey are in fact killed for the harvesting. Watch this series again.
Really amazing, so important, even with new techniques to preserve this more basic technology of beekeeping. I am curious if the cow dung coated skeps deter predators...

Does anyone have any idea how to get the dimensions of these skeps? You can get close by comparing them to body parts in the film, but I’d like to get a little more accurate. Thanks!
The alternating fruit trees is genius, I wonder how this effects tree infestations/pathogens from spreading through an orchard, it must be a positive fix.
One thing I haven't found yet is how people in 8th century smoked their bees. Did they use a smoky torch? a pipe with some sort of herb? did they even use smokers? Need this info for my novel, Quest for the Golden City.
@@wiredforstereo my questions is how they got the smoke to the bees. Did they use a torch, blow the smoke with a pipe similar to the video? hold the skep over a smoky fire? I've googled everything I could think of but it always takes me back to the same articles.
@@lindagalecrocilla9058 I would start with what people in the third world do still today. They have a bundle of vegetation, they light it, and wave it around the colony (usually in a tree). You don't have to blow copious amounts of thick smoke into a hive. It only takes a little. Bees are extremely sensitive to smell. What people use for sage smoke today would work just fine, a tight bundle of material that smolders and makes a lot of smoke. It really doesn't take a lot. I often work without smoke, it depends on the bees. But bees were likely quite a bit meaner back then.
@@wiredforstereo Excellent! Thanks so much for the suggestion. I think sometimes I get caught in a loop and can't go beyond you. Duhhh! My dad was a beekeeper, but he didn't start until after I was grown and out of the house. Do you have modern hives or skeps?
I searched "skep beekeeping" and this was the first hit. I just reread Mark Shepard's "Restoration Agriculture" and this time the section on beekeeping caught my attention. I wonder if the methods shown here help with improving the genetics of the operation. It kind of seems like it would. Would bees raised like this eventually be able to overcome all the challenges they're facing today? Mark Shepard seems to think so.
I would say so also. That's what this whole channel is about. Really the hive doesn't matter, it's the beekeeping style. We must stop treating and allow the bees to face disease in order to become resistant to disease. It is the only permanent and sustainable solution.

Now THIS is bee keeping!! The camera even picked up a queen singing too. I’ve seen the new age bee keepers with the new plastic hives. This type of bee keeping seems better to me. I mean seriously they use a goose feather as a brush and those bee colonies are preserved in cow dung. Lol. These guys are bee keeping gangsters.
expecially since they migrate their bees to your bees backyard for important crops that yours needed. You also get to take advantage of mites and viruses from all over your country! not just the infections you normally have to deal with! its a win win situation.
Skeps harbor no more disease than any other hive. As you saw in the video the "no inspection" idea is false. And skeps are legal in the majority of US states and most of the rest of the world.
If in past times they did not keep their bees over winter, what did they do? Take all the honey forcing the bees out of the hives? And how did they get them back again the next spring? I'm referring to what was said at 36:18
He's speaking specifically of prime swarms. They would be used to draw comb and make honey and then harvested (killing the hive) because the prime swarm queen was older and because prime swarms are very energetic and productive in the first year and not always in the second year. Secondary swarms would be kept to make new colonies for next year as they have brand new queens which will likely produce well the following year but not this year. Fortunately today we use methods that do not require the destruction of the hive for harvest.
@@TreatmentFreeBeekeeping Thanks for your answer. But how did they separate and dispose of the primary swarm before winter, because they swarm not in autumn, but in spring don't they?
Is there a higher video quality of this available? Man I really respect you for saving and sharing this, what a gift.👏💯🐝🦋 Thank you very much and God bless and keep you! 💯🤗🌹🐝🦋
@@lukejones1244 You find it, I'll upload it. This is most likely filmed on film, transferred to VHS, then digitally captured. It is 44 years old after all.
@@wiredforstereoMate this looks really good. This is better quality than people saw at home with the bunny ears in one hand and facing the analogue TV tower, praying for the picture to sharpen.
With pollutants absorbing into our wax this is a great way to cycle wax and not letting it in the skep for more than two years. I'd like to see clubs or colleges be permitted here in the U.S. to teach skep beekeeping. A special license be issued to perform skep beekeeping. It won't happen but I'd like to see a comparison of survival between langstroth or other frame hives and skep beekeeping. Obviously the big producers would stick with Langstroth but us little sideliners or hobby beekeepers could have a good time with this.
@@George-nx5lo Wax is lipophilic, so it attracts lipophilic chemicals. Plenty of studies about it too google around. Lots of pesticides and things. However, the problem isn't as bad as some make it out to be. The wax holds the chemicals so they don't get into the honey as much until they get higher concentrations. I recommend cycling comb progressively on average five years. Basically, with a ten frame box, two frames per year per box. Very manageable.
Well, I can tell you, it's just not that big of a deal. If you're calm and relaxed and move deliberately, you'll be fine. If you're twitching and dancing around like a freaked out mess, you're gonna have a bad day. It's all about how you act. I've been around all manner of colonies, including africanized bees of the highest caliber in the Arizona desert, and they don't pay you any mind as long as you're not threatening.
What an interesting video. About those tiny little queen boxes--the one he inspected that had an unmated virgin queen, that was laying only infertile eggs, do they go ahead and allow this colony to hatch drones and go on a mating flight with the virgin queen? It looked like the beekeeper closed the entrance and moved the box into the other group with the mated queens. Just curious, as the narrator didn't elaborate on that issue.
Once the unmated queen has begun laying, she will never again mate, so she would be useless at that point and the hive would die. This happens sometimes. I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly, can you post a time stamp so I can better address your question?
@@wiredforstereo Whew! That was a chore, finding it again in a 2 hr+ video! Okay, @47:00-ish, he puts some bees in the small boxes then finds some queens to put in there with them. The tiny nuc boxes are set out in the open, and @49:00+ he mentions the young queens can fly off on their mating flights. @50:40+ he inspects the nucs for queen-rightness, closes the opening and sets them together. @51:32 he comes across one that has not mated. He closes that door as well, and sets it forward--but not with the other boxes (I was inaccurate on that), and moves on, but doesn't elaborate on what happens with that nuc and queen. I guess then that since the queen will remain useless, it would be counter-productive to keep her. Thank you for responding!
@@Doxymeister "I guess then that since the queen will remain useless, it would be counter-productive to keep her." Yes you are right. Not everything can be shown in the video. Now there are two options. #1 the queen will lose her head and the bees will get a new virgin. #2 The hive exit will still be closed without food supply all will....
I learned so much from this video. Thank so much the video was fascinating . The time of this video flew by Thanks again. How long has this process been going on.

I would be interested to see agricultural universities in the states to experiment with skep beekeeping. Even though it is considered illegal in many states of the U.S. I think it could be a different avenue for beekeeping. Maybe special state permits allowing skep beekeeping after intensive classes. Fun stuff.
@@wiredforstereo Interesting. I was told by an entomology professor that it's basically national. Has to do with inspections. I would like to try skep beekeeping but my state says no.
its legal in every state, now if you want to sell anything from the hives you must pass an inspection which I doubt you could considering there is no way to inspect the hive, hives health, parasites, beetles, moths, for a queen, check if mated queen, check what brood pattern looks like, check swarm cells, check super cups, check drone cells, check whether honey is capped, check whether they are bringing in enough pollen , check if nectar flow is on, check if they are backfilling laying area... and thats just or starters.... so ya there is a reason for the way we do things.
You can make your own version. I used a 1x6 and made a 12" square box. I took bamboo skewers and used them as "frames" by stapling 2 for holders and laying some across those. I coated the skewers in wax. I shook in bees and a queen and they built it out. Very easy and cheap to make.
They generally had a good supply of skeps, harvesting and repopulating skeps would be part of the yearly process. Honey collection is done depending on local conditions, you want to have sealed cured honey, but leave enough to survive winter. So some places that means harvesting in fall, other places harvest in mid summer and leave the hive to refill in the fall, some harvest twice. All beekeeping is local.
Are the queen cells always on the end (or bottom) of the combs and so easy to take off? Is this why a queen excluder is not needed in a skep, or is that unrelated? Why is an excluder not used?
Swarm cells are almost always on the bottom of combs but supersedure cells are usually in the middle. A queen excluder is used by commercial beekeepers to assure no brood is laid in the honey supers, so that the honey can be quickly processed without need for further sorting. A backyard beekeeper doesn't need it as they typically can take the time to sort combs and only process the ones that need to be processed. Further, you can exrract partial frames, leaving the brood intact, which an commercial beekeeper does not habe time to do. At any rate, the excluder is not necessary and hinders the free flow of operations in the hive. I don't recommend backyard beekeepers use them.
@@TreatmentFreeBeekeeping Interesting, it seems to me that the hives they sell are far too advanced for the "backyard beekeeper". This video shows that all you need is an upturned basket with a small hole cut into it! Very encouraging! I suppose it was a bit misleading to show all the supersedure cells being pulled off the bottoms of the combs, if, as you say, they are usually in the middle.
It's a cool concept, but the modern day beehive needs much more maintenance due to introduced pests like the varroa mite. Unsurprisingly enough, the way things were done 40 years ago is no longer the best way
@@henrybyers5557 Modern hives need much less maintenance, and that maintenance is easier to do, as well as making splits, checking welfare, and harvesting honey. Pests really don't enter into it.
Modern hives are far easier to harvest from, being able to harvest without killing the hive, they are much easier to manipulate, one can rely on splitting rather than catching swarms for increase, honey production is vastly increased, they are far easier to transport, feed, and they are easier and cheaper (in time) to build and maintain. They do cost more, but you can build them on your own to save money.
in the area in the video there are both types next to each other. I was visiting the Lüneburger Heide 3 Years ago. No connection to beekeepers, so dont know if a study exsists.
What a incredible story of the beekeeping process. Anyone doing this anywhere now besides Germany or is it a lost art using Skeps? This looks like a incredible amount of work compared to conventional beehives however this is a large operation. 30 pounds yield of honey per Skep compared to how much more yield with modern beehives. ? I recall like in the northern US States a 100 lbs but you leave half for winter. Uncertain the volume values in the southern US and anyone willing to elaborate on it? I’m not experienced in having bees but plan on doing so next year. It is fascinating and interesting work.
Solomon Parker thank you for the information!! I’m a type 1 juvenile diabetic and consume a large amount of honey each day with good blood sugar control. Noticed so far 1) Black Tupelo & 2) Mainly Gallberry honey mixed with black Tupelo,Gum Tree, Saw Palmetto flowers help greatly. Noticed from Aajonus Vonderplanitz that raw unheated nor pasteurized partially crystallized honey or creamed honey allows me a good amount of sweetness each day. Plus nothing heated over 104 F like with filtration as I noticed Amish Farms are doing this heating it up to 120-140F when it crystallized. I’m consuming about 12-16 tbsp a day and in his written work : We Want To Live: A Recipe for Living Without Disease talks about consuming 3/4 Cup ( 36 tbsp’s) of this unheated raw honey each day. I’m skeptical but my readings are better than ever as I always experiment with food variations and combinations. My new honey to try is Acacia Honey and that is costly. The Black Tupelo was not cheap either. I’d like to catch wild bees up here in north central Maine but not sure if their are any. ?
If primary swarm from Hive A is caught and put in Hive B, and the secondary swarm is caught and put in Hive C, what happens in Hive A? Does it become empty? Or does a third colony remain in it?
It is most likely that a queen will remain in hive A to become its new queen. It is also possible that all viable queens will leave Hive A and it will become irrevocably queenless and cease to be unless something else happens like thelytoky. That is a trait where an unmated worker is capable of laying an egg which is a clone of herself, which can then become the new queen. However, this is rarely observed.
@@wiredforstereo I suppose if you attract bees into your new hive, with wax and honey, or syrup, you dont know if they are a primary swarm or a secondary. Will that make a difference when you come to the next swarming season?
@@lukejones1244 You will not attract a swarm with honey or syrup, only robbers. Primary swarm is only important for the size and maturity of the queen. Secondary swarms can survive just as well if babied, though they have a disadvantage because they are later, smaller, and usually have an unmated queen, who will need to mate and start laying eggs.
Just a lot more work. But, with the melting of wax every year or two from the skeps doesn't allow the wax to become contaminated with chemicals, virus, or bacterial infection.
there is no way to inspect the hive, hives health, parasites, beetles, moths, for a queen, check if mated queen, check what brood pattern looks like, check swarm cells, check super cups, check drone cells, check whether honey is capped, check whether they are bringing in enough pollen , check if nectar flow is on, check if they are backfilling laying area... and thats just or starters.... so ya there is a reason for the way we do things.
@@beebob1279 virus or bacterial infection inside comb? what are you talking about? I think what you are referring to is the build up of chemical used to treat certain parasites, which can be treated with heat 106F thus eliminating the chemicals all together

Method and innovation from one country to the other are defer, however, there are technique s and things we can learn from whatever information any body is passing on thank you.
The mistake is that the film shows the old German technology for breeding bees (selling cell-free packages). At present, it is not possible due to the disease of bees by varoatosis (just the bees will not survive the winter and die without treatment)
Very few, because it isn't a good way to keep bees. You have no idea what's going on inside the hive. There's also no way to expand the hive to prevent swarming or take advantage of large colonies that produce 100+ pounds of honey in a year. Every time you harvest, you have to destroy the colony and all their comb. Plus they are illegal in many states because the lack of inspection methods raises concerns about diseases like foulbrood going unnoticed and spreading between hives.
I have to wonder why it is assumed that skepping and no treatment go in the same sentence. They as far as I have read did use treatments to the best of their abilities. To think otherwise is I feel erroneous.
You could definitely stick a tray of apiguard under there, do Swedish OA sponges, or (probably easiest) a course of oxalic acid vapor treatments to knock down mite levels effectively.
Thank you! This is such an amazing video. Are they still producing honey? One thing I just can't seem to get over the fact that cow poop covers the hives...they're touching the outer hives while harvesting the honey... # suberban dweller lol
I have heard news that the junior Klindworth passed away not too long ago. As far as I am aware, the family still operates, but I don't have any direct knowledge. Here's the thing about poo, it's only harmful if it contains pathogens that are harmful. European descended people were exposed to cattle (and other livestock) pathogens (such as small pox) thousands of years ago and thus were less susceptible to them. That's why they were so devastating to the indigenous Americans, they did not have the same set of livestock and viruses that the Europeans did. Furthermore, those pathogens have limited ability to remain virulent in conditions outside the mammal body, that's why heating (pasteurization, composting) kills them, as does dessication, like here. Horse and cow dung have many agricultural and household uses, including as a binder for cob, firewood, and skep sealing. Of course other sources of poo are not human friendly, birds and reptiles carry salmonella, and you don't want to touch anything from meat eating animals at all.
I wonder when Darth Vader got here and became a bee farmer.🤣😊👍😒🤦♂️🤷♂️ That first video is truly amazing I had no idea this was done. I must have missed it why is he killing all those bees?
This was something of an education. Why would anyone in their right mind want to go back to such labour intensive beekeeping over the modern method? I did however like the smoke pipe idea. Also I think the swarm catching system could be adapted to modern hives in built up areas. Thanks for making this available.
This is a method that was used for centuries (still some adherents). It was well entrenched into the culture of beekeeping, as as it goes, often people are hesitant to change doing something they've been doing for decades. The modern method is also much less nature compatible, akin to factory farming in some iterations. Different people keep bees for different reasons and for different purposes. Not everybody needs to do it to maximize honey production and profit.

19. He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord, to give you the gift of a pure son.”
20. She said, “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, and I was never unchaste?”
21. He said, “Thus said your Lord, `It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for humanity, and a mercy from Us. It is a matter already decided.'“
22. So she carried him, and secluded herself with him in a remote place.
23. The labor-pains came upon her, by the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, “I wish I had died before this, and been completely forgotten.”
24. Whereupon he called her from beneath her: “Do not worry; your Lord has placed a stream beneath you.
25. And shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards you, and it will drop ripe dates by you.”
26. “So eat, and drink, and be consoled. And if you see any human, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, so I will not speak to any human today.'“
27. Then she came to her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have done something terrible.
28. O sister of Aaron, your father was not an evil man, and your mother was not a whore.”
29. So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to an infant in the crib?”
30. He said, “I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture, and made me a prophet.
31. And has made me blessed wherever I may be; and has enjoined on me prayer and charity, so long as I live.
32. And kind to my mother, and He did not make me a disobedient rebel.
33. So Peace is upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the Day I get resurrected alive.”
34. That is Jesus son of Mary-the Word of truth about which they doubt.

37. But the various factions differed among themselves. So woe to those who disbelieve from the scene of a tremendous Day.
38. Listen to them and watch for them the Day they come to Us. But the wrongdoers today are completely lost.

45. O my father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Gracious will afflict you, and you become an ally of the devil.”
46. He said, “Are you renouncing my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will stone you. So leave me alone for a while.”
47. He said, “Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you; He has been Kind to me.
48. And I will withdraw from you, and from what you pray to instead of Allah. And I will pray to my Lord, and I hope I will not be disappointed in my prayer to my Lord.”
12. “Our Lord, lift the torment from us, we are believers.”
13. But how can they be reminded? An enlightening messenger has already come to them.
14. But they turned away from him, and said, “Educated, but crazy!”
111. And say, “Praise be to Allah, who has not begotten a son, nor has He a partner in sovereignty, nor has He an ally out of weakness, and glorify Him constantly.”

Georg Klindwort jun. has recently died according to an orbituary published in a north German bee keeper's magazine. He changed the apiary into a more modern one once he had taken over from his father but reputedly kept on having some colonies in skeps.
Thank you for that information.

This was a great vid. Thanks for compiling it. It is a stark reminder that the way we take care of bees is not the only way.
This is so fascinating that I watched it a few times now. It’s also very relaxing. I like to fall asleep while listening to it.

Yes, I think so too, a treasure even if you're not a beekeeper.

That was fascinating . Now I know why cartoon bee hives are shaped the way they are
Skeps are making a comeback. Depends on your state laws though.
Yep. Not legal in New york state. must have removable frames for inspectors.
Why do they need to be inspected? Government needs to get their cut off the top? Just another unnecessary regulation! Skeps were good for hundreds (maybe thousands of years).
Unnecessary regulation yes. But no cut.

Glad you could find something for your book. I'd be happy to check it out and make sure it's accurate when the time comes, if you want.

Besides, I moved off the farm so that I would never have to be elbow deep in cow manure again.
cant you substitute another substance? maybe clay?
@ObamfSPIKE Yeah, I feel you. I'll take dumb physical labor any day over insanity-inducing mental labor. Physical labor hurts sometimes. It's hot and uncomfortable and dirty, but all that is mind over matter. I can force myself to get out of bed and move hay bales or something no matter how badly I slept the night before. But ask me to program software or write a memo on no sleep? Forget it. My brain just says "Screw you, not happening today!".
IV allways loved skeps and it was a simpler time so cool to watch
As with everything, the process is now much more efficient and mechanized. But nothing is keeping you from keeping bees in skeps. There is nothing about a wooden box that makes it a "bee hive."
@@TreatmentFreeBeekeeping true but in my county it's illegal if you can't examine the combs for disease
@@justinboyens6082 Are you in a country where that matters?
I don't think so but it is a law not sure if they would really do anything unless a bee inspector came and saw
@@justinboyens6082 Sounds like one should do what's right rather than what's legal, for there are no inspectors in the woods checking the hives in the trees.
I would love to get one of those old smokers !!!
I have one, and they are still available. Google "imker pfeife"

They are called dathe pipes.
It's amazing how there is absolutely no waste.
Except for the colony and comb when the honey is harvested?
The comb is melted down for wax and the bees go back in the hive to start again or are sold
@@chrisblester37The majority of bees are killed for the honey harvest.....did you watch the whole thing?
@@robertmabry6998 Not the majority, the majority leaves with the prime swarm that they catch again. It's also not neccessary to kill the bees to harvest. You can drum / shake them into a different skep.
@@weirjwerijrweurhuewhr588the primary swarms aren't around when the honey harvest occurs. The bees that produce the honey are in fact killed for the harvesting. Watch this series again.

Wow hard work but worth it for the Price of honey and wax. Thanks for this old fashioned but essential tradition of bee keeping

Beekeeping is an incredible thing, common things with nature are not always easy
Thanks.

Amazing! thank you for this information, bless you.

Building my skep soon ...I have lots of fruit tree can’t wait to start my beekeeping
One thing I haven't found yet is how people in 8th century smoked their bees. Did they use a smoky torch? a pipe with some sort of herb? did they even use smokers? Need this info for my novel, Quest for the Golden City.
I don't know for sure, but perhaps with burning straw or wood or a smoker contraption with a bellows. It's a good question. Many ways to make smoke.
@@lindagalecrocilla9058 I have modern hives. But I'm interested in historical methods also, that's why I posted this video.
43:22 are they dragging my chain here, is there a guy standing behind the camera with a plastic kazoo or what is this
The audio is a little low-fi, but that is actually the sound the queen can make. We call it "piping" here in the US.

7. Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you know for sure.

My pleasure. I'm glad you are enjoying it.
Now I'm curious how the old farm houses were built, they're beautiful!
Whole different channel!
Cow doug seems to act as natural pesticide keep other parasite away. I thought they only used it in India

With pollutants absorbing into our wax this is a great way to cycle wax and not letting it in the skep for more than two years.
I'd like to see clubs or colleges be permitted here in the U.S. to teach skep beekeeping. A special license be issued to perform skep beekeeping. It won't happen but I'd like to see a comparison of survival between langstroth or other frame hives and skep beekeeping. Obviously the big producers would stick with Langstroth but us little sideliners or hobby beekeepers could have a good time with this.
what pollutants make it into your wax?
@@George-nx5lo Wax is lipophilic, so it attracts lipophilic chemicals. Plenty of studies about it too google around. Lots of pesticides and things. However, the problem isn't as bad as some make it out to be. The wax holds the chemicals so they don't get into the honey as much until they get higher concentrations. I recommend cycling comb progressively on average five years. Basically, with a ten frame box, two frames per year per box. Very manageable.
@@TreatmentFreeBeekeeping Ya that is very manageable, I guess bees do track in small amounts over time
soon you will have take a special license to be allowed to take a shit.......
How people can casually work among bees with zero protection and not get stung will forever be one of life's greatest mysteries
They would get stung all the time, it's part of the job.

I would be interested to see agricultural universities in the states to experiment with skep beekeeping. Even though it is considered illegal in many states of the U.S. I think it could be a different avenue for beekeeping.
Maybe special state permits allowing skep beekeeping after intensive classes. Fun stuff.
Not all states consider it illegal. Many states have no beekeeping law whatsoever. Some consider it legal, the remainders don't.
@@wiredforstereo Interesting. I was told by an entomology professor that it's basically national. Has to do with inspections. I would like to try skep beekeeping but my state says no.
@@beebob1279 Then dont tell them.
its legal in every state, now if you want to sell anything from the hives you must pass an inspection which I doubt you could considering there is no way to inspect the hive, hives health, parasites, beetles, moths, for a queen, check if mated queen, check what brood pattern looks like, check swarm cells, check super cups, check drone cells, check whether honey is capped, check whether they are bringing in enough pollen , check if nectar flow is on, check if they are backfilling laying area... and thats just or starters.... so ya there is a reason for the way we do things.
You can make your own version. I used a 1x6 and made a 12" square box. I took bamboo skewers and used them as "frames" by stapling 2 for holders and laying some across those. I coated the skewers in wax. I shook in bees and a queen and they built it out. Very easy and cheap to make.
What happens when the sleeps are full, do they have alot of empty sleeps waiting? When do you collect honey?
Thankyou lot's to learn
It would be amazing if a modern bee farmer would do a comparison series then stagger them so we can see how the work/method compares.
There are a few who are doing it in the US. I think probably the most notable of which is Susan Knilans north of Portland.

Just the sheer amount of manual labor involved in this process really makes you think. We have it pretty easy these days.
Hey did u watch the whole thing
@@lisamartinez2876 I did.
The mistake is that the film shows the old German technology for breeding bees (selling cell-free packages). At present, it is not possible due to the disease of bees by varoatosis (just the bees will not survive the winter and die without treatment)
Actually no. Hence the name of the channel. We keep bees without treatments.
Does anyone do it like anymore.
Yes, skeps are still used in beekeeping by a few beekeepers. I do not know if they are still used on this farm in Germany.
@@henrybyers5557 As seen in the video, the skilled beekeeper can inspect skeps and know what is going on in the hive with a high degree of accuracy.
I wish I could keep bees like this. South Texas has so many things going against it.
This way of bee keeping is illegal in many Countries these days. Modern hives are less work and less cruel and not illegal.
I have to wonder why it is assumed that skepping and no treatment go in the same sentence. They as far as I have read did use treatments to the best of their abilities. To think otherwise is I feel erroneous.
Is that assumed? I don't think so.
The amount of work though, that smoker leave two hands free to work, do bee keepers still use them?
Apparently people still do use them.
its a huge fire hazard, unless you like the thought of catching on fire...
Прекрасна картина!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder when Darth Vader got here and became a bee farmer.🤣😊👍😒🤦♂️🤷♂️ That first video is truly amazing I had no idea this was done. I must have missed it why is he killing all those bees?

Lool. You probably developed a venum immunity after that.
There is no true immunity to venom. It always hurts. But you do get to the point where you don't swell up as much or at all.
@@TreatmentFreeBeekeeping I know. I'm just kidding. Lol
There were removable frame hives when these films were made. I have absolutely no idea why these guys were still using skeps. It's really crazy.
👍👍👍
I woke up to this
This was something of an education.
