Very typical of Spanish and Southern European teams. The English league still has at least a bit of shame. And if a player did this he'd be mocked.
In Spain we have the same stereotype against the Southern teams of Spain. Spanish Northern teams are more noble we say. Anyway, the Spanish footballer, except for some shameful exceptions that were prevalent in the Barcelona of the last decade, is usually honest; see in the Premier: Xabi Alonso, MIchu, Cazorla, Mata, Fernando Torres, Silva, De Gea, Ander Herrera, Pau Torres, Rodri, etc. In Barcelona Puyol, Luis Enrique and Iniesta were honest. Valdes and Busquets were cheats.

You're right that there are honest Spanish Players. I'm referring mostly to the acceptance within the football culture. I only rarely see or hear Spanish commentators/pundits or fans complain about diving. And especially referees seem to award ridiculous penalties in la liga, a la Jordi Alba (The cheating devil of football). That's why I get the impression that it is much more accepted. Whereas at least I know some fans would laugh at Jordi Alba etc, in the Uk. And that might be enough social pressure to decrease the prevalence of diving.

Madrid is mix of peoples from all over, so it`s harder to generalize. As for Atletico de Madrid has been seen as "dirtier" and rougher due to Argentinian influence since the 1970s. In the recent past Barcelona were shamed many times for their cheating antics, especially Alba and Busquets. Btw Alba was one of the most hated players all over Spain. Very talented, but quite nasty and irritating in his antics.

And it's true that her friends and family would say that Northerners tend to be more serious and discreet. But they'd also say more cold and less passionate. Although my wife is quite cold, maybe she is a northerner at heart :p She would kill me for saying that (That she's a northerner, not that she's cold). But they didn't mention the honesty in footballing terms. Out of interest, you know any good Spanish football channels on youtube?

More than a club indeed - a club rich with a culture of cheating and deception. I’ve never understood the appreciation for this lot. Sure, at their best in the last two decades they passed the ball around a lot and scored pretty goals but they also made an art out of scamming the referee, having opponents booked and lacking class at every opportunity. No foul, Keane was entitled to go for that ball and the correct decision should have been a corner or penalty and a yellow card for the keeper for faking injury and unsportsmanlike behaviour
