    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

Learning different genres is always a great method.
I've been learning the foundations of metal drumming the last few years and found playing along to hip hop/electro tracks helped me focus on keeping the kick hits even and steady, playing along to funk and soul helped my high-hat control, and reggae helped my speed on tom fills.
    All the best for 2022!

Writing & recording stuff outside your normal genre is extremely beneficial. "Americana" is NOT my genre, but I'm about 95% complete covering an old Tom Petty track (You Don't Know How it Feels), and I have learned a LOT in the process. Funny thing is, I chose it because I thought it would be "easy" to cover. Hahahaha. Fail. I's NOT easy to faithfully reproduce someone else's music, no matter how seemingly simple it sounds. Plus, folks like Tom Petty are masters at playing simple stuff.... masterfully. Trying to figure out how to reproduce what they did is a huge learning experience.

This is amazing advice, one thing I recommend to new guitarists all the time, is "play everything" I play a ton of covers and styles I can't friggen stand, because there's always something to learn from it. Especially if the song did well, there's a reason, and maybe, we should instead of saying "Man I don't like this" be going "What do people like about this?"
as for my playstyle I'm big on Nu metal, and classic metal, but I play pop, alternative, rock, metal, hell even some renditions of classical songs, because those pieces survived the test of time, survivorship bias, if they survived the test of time, there's a reason and I should be looking for it. It's not exactly the same, but the point behind my and your advice is the same, there's something to learn from other music outside our normal genre.

I think a lot of people forget about trying new genres. Almost all the artists you like pulled inspiration from other genres, it might turn out you're actually better at making music in a genre you don't listen to. Lemmy loved Abba and country for example. I originally got into making music because I wanted to produce hardcore punk but I ended up making synthwave and ambient which are genres I hardly listen to but everyone has given me significantly more positive feedback on those than my attempts with metal and punk.

    • @KelticKabukiGirl

I had a bunch of genre influences, starting in 89 I was in Love with Maiden and Sabbath , and Hendrix and the Doors, then Death, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Metallica, Exodus, Nuclear Assault, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Venom, Celtic Frost, Grunge, Alternative all sorts of heavy or weird shit. I hit a wall around 95 and soon got into Jazz. I had no lessons, books, or videos. No scales, chords, or theory, but even by ear, if not maybe more, it didn't get me over the wall, it handed me the keys to the fucking door! Jazz helps soooo much, I can shit out hook riffs like diarrhea now!

    • @julianspanos2108
      @julianspanos2108 2 роки тому +8

Trying new genres will also prevent you from falling into the incestuous rabbit hole that's making metal music inspired by metal inspired by metal. After a certain point, without anything new being injected it just sounds the same.

    • @SomeOne-pd6vm
      @SomeOne-pd6vm 2 роки тому +9

@@julianspanos2108 it can also be quite fun to take your influences and apply them to other genres. we see this in stuff like "trap-metal" which has become fairly popular lately (artists like zillakami for example) where we have hip-hop beats and vocal rhythms but with metal style screaming and guitar riffs alongside the typical electronic production. a lot of the bigger names in hip-hop right now were inspired by punk and metal and I would love to see that be more of a two way street (which we're starting to see with bands like code orange heavily embracing modern synthesis and some EDM production techniques).

I recently made a trip back to the first 2 Woods disk that Glenn mixed. Although Glenn claims it was way early in his mixing career but the 2 records still stand the test of time. Its brutal, its dark and melancholic on some of the parts. Also the mix is on a whole other level given the type of production seen on black metal albums. Not too clean and not too grinding. My dad is a luthier and used the same pups in two guitars, one had a gibson like bridge and the other one a floyd rose. When we tried both they sounded nothing like the other one. The fixed bridge had a more mid-treble sound and the Floyd Rose made the guitar way more bassy. If I can get my hands back on the fixed bridge guitar then I'll do a comparison, could be interensting.

Glen! You should make a video comparing the speakers in your early cabinet vs the newer cabinet to back up the claim that older ones sound better! (I don’t have experience with cabs, but I’d be interested to see the difference in sound)

People who struggle to write songs just need to keep at it. Or get Trey's course maybe. One thing that helps me is to listen to a lot of different styles of music. Listen to the people who have written killer songs. Not just killer metal songs. And also try to write in different styles. Just a thought there. Great show, Glenn!

i love the little panicky look at the screen at 23:41 when the screen saver goes off
also re: writing outside your confort genre, YES, the best thing you can do to write good metal songs is try to write stuff in other genres and learn from it and apply those ideas and techniques to metal, it will not only improve your metal songwriting, it will also make your sound more interesting and unique

Gleeeeennnn!!! Maybe the older Vintage 30s are sounding better simply because they are well broken in...can't say for sure because I only own the new Chinese ones which are not broken in...just a thought,I don't know...what do you think?

Glenn! When referring to the Celestion Vintage 30s, I was discussing with my bass instructor, about your recent scientific method with testing the different speakers. Yes, I regularly maintain my instrument, as I play proficiently on guitar anytime my neurological movement disorders don't decide to wreck my progress. Anyways, he had mentioned that there had been a change in the magnets from the standard AlNiCo to the more powerful Nd magnets thus giving a change to the overall sound. I had some issues researching this, but it seems like a very well articulated hypothesis. Perhaps you may be able to delve deeper and shed further light upon this particular area of the subject matter if you so desire. Thanks for being awesome, being scientifically literate, and fuck you.

Interfaces! I'm using a zoom r8 and I have to say I love it. It's about 400 CAD retail but I got mine for a little less on sale. The built in amp sims in it aren't great, but you can record direct into it as well as interface with your DAW of choice. It'll run on 3 AA batteries for hours on end and can use it as a field recorder with its 2 built in microphones. You can use it as a live looper, sequencer and drum machine. I've never had any headroom issues either direct in with a guitar/bass or a microphone and has plenty of gain for quiet inputs and it can record in up to 24 bit 48kHz quality. I know it's less sexy than a sleek little box next to your mixing computer, but given the results that I've been able to pull out of it in tandem with a crappy acer laptop, I can't recommend it enough.

Well you had Jason and Marty's band Cacophony who were signed to Shrapnel. So, off the top of my head, "Ninja", "X-ray Eyes", "Floating World", "Go Off", and "fortune?", maybe. I'm not sure what label they were with for their solo careers but songs included "Air", "Perpetual Burn", Dragons Kiss". Other famous artists from that label were Tony Mcalpine, Richie Kotzen, Vinnie Moore, and Racer X.

This channel has been very influential on me. Since I've yet to officially set up my studio, I feel like I can be off to a good start with what I've learned over the last year so I can have a better idea diving in.
I'm to the point of only needing mics, monitors, and the space set up but I'm mostly worried about the mics. I'm thinking of getting the Shure SM-57 drum mic kit so I can do a lot of there recordings as well and then next upgrade to the Lewitt matched mics for the drums and begin to do more live recordings. Saying that the room is properly set up, is that a good idea or will there still be interference with other mics and instruments bleeding into others?

Time and standards keep changing. I recall when a decade on the job was not considered a lot. Cpla decades turning wrenches has helped me learn play the skins softer. Of course, gone are the days of 32nd notes on the hats for an entire song... Thanks for the vid, Glenn

Diving back into the classic rock riffs and songs I started playing with (AC/DC, Sabbath, etc) is actually helping my metal playing. Kinda drifting away from drop B and C# back up to drop D and E standard HELP!!!

Glen, you are on point at 14:48 with the tube tones and those with "discerning ears" being full of crap when they say they can hear any difference. The only way I can tell any quantifiable difference between any tubes of the same type - that are within functional tolerances, at least - is with a scope. A bit of asymmetry here, earlier breakup there, more crossover distortion at certain volumes, etc. Only exception is if you have a very worn out tube, or one that's just bad, then it's obvious. Any other time, if an old school amp component is going bad in a way you can hear it, it's likely a filter capacitor causing a hum or buzz or some sour harmonics. In any case, I won't say what sounds better or worse with the new tech and plug-ins, but I do know at least one thing that sounds good: With hearing protection in, dials at 2 o'clock and master volume up to pants-flapping loud, nothing beats a good humbucker guitar chugging and wailing through a tube amp and a half stack. I'm a simple man with simple needs.

As for Robotech, I LOVED that! Would love to watch it again (especially as back in South Africa, where I lived at the time, they never aired the entire series or at least not that I saw). Have been on the hunt for it to watch again.

    On that DI Box:
My shitty passive (!) Ibanez RG Guitar with those INF4 pickups at the bridge clipped my Audient iD mkII (gain @ 0) on palm mutes and loud trem-picking when I used my good cable. had to use something with a lot more resistance before I got my Radial J48. Thanks for the suggestion Glenn! That 15dB pad puts my peaks at a comfy -10. My other 2 guitars were still pretty hot peaking at like -1dBFS. They kinda overlooked that i guess, other than that the thing is fucking crazy good for the price. And they have this guitar-specific box with great headroom so they probably didn't want dynamic mic output to be too quiet on the iD

I found you when you were comparing a” pultec to a Klark Technic-“ i have several of the Pultec in my rack(as you noted they are not cheap and you cannot replicated it with a couple of IC’s-
i just wanted to give you props- i dont know anything about shredding or shredding music (I’m a pop guy)- but i do love your take and approach…. And you make me laugh……. Like when Lukather set up his amps in his back yard to wake up his neighbor in the morning after the guy wouldn’t stop with the morning leaf blowers!!!
So thank you and best of wishes as we move forward in 2022- oh and i loved your take on kindness to the guys who work at places like guitar center in LA - thats a tough job- and the guys who work there are just trying to make a buck….. so a little kindness goes a long way!!!

Hey Glenn thank you for your response! Totally agree with you about the different eras of V30's sounding different! My 2002 quad sounds very different to my 2008 V30's. Nolly has a whole video going over the differences with Kohlekeller Studio and he says the same, 2000 - 2004 V30's are the good ones.

Hey Glenn! Now that I've finally gotten a house I was thinking of setting up my home recording rig up in a userfriendly (or is it ergonomic?) way. I have acquired some cool guitar preamps over the years and it would be cool not having to recable everything when I want to try out some sounds on a different unit. I also have an ancient Roland GP100 for those Heavy Devy delays ( sound amazing on this old piece of kit) but these go slightly to waste if you're only recording mono.
So ... needing about 5 sends and 6 returns I was attracted to something like the Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre to tidy it all up in a rack. What do you think?

Jewel (featuring Jason Becker) from Dragon's Kiss by Marty Friedman is the exception to the rule - but it's not shred as much as a masterfully composed, heartbreakingly melodic masterpiece.
At the time, Jason's ability to play had deteriorated to some extent, but he used that to his advantage to build a more simplified composition that focused on the feels.
It's a song that still brings me to tears. It's a fittingly beautiful and haunting piece for the Friedman/Becker duo to have gone out on.
And yeah, it's the exception to the rule because after having listened to the entire Shrapnel catalogue, it's the only one I can easily recall.
