To summarise what others have said across numerous comments; Doctor Who has run from 1963 (when I actually started watching) through to the present day with a single continuity. Although the show was off air from 1989 (other than a TV movie in 1996) to 2005 it was never officially cancelled. When it relaunched in 2005 it wasn't as a reboot but simply a continuation.
The original 'run' from 1963 is referred to in the fandom as "Classic Who" while the current run is 'New Who' (or, somewhat dismissively, 'Nu Who'). When the Doctor is near death he (or she as the current incarnation is female) has the ability to regenerate--replace every cell to have a fresh start with a new face, different personality traits but still the same memories. Introduced simply as a way to explain the replacement of the lead actor (William Hartnell--the First Doctor) who had to leave due to failing health, it is the single key factor that has allowed the show to run so long. Typically the lead actor is replaced about every 3 seasons giving the producers and writers the opportunity to regularly sweep out the cobwebs, so to speak, and start afresh.
We are currently on the 13th Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, and it has been announced already that she and the showrunner will be leaving after the next season so 14 will be just around the corner. Throughout New Who there have been references back to the Classic era both direct and oblique (through reintroducing old enemies, for example). Events around the 50th anniversary in 2013 cemented the link between the eras.
In terms of watching the show, although I've been along for the ride since the start, I'd suggest modern viewers start with the 2005 relaunch, work their way through the modern series (usually 13 x 45 episodes per season) then consider the Classic era. While the Classic show has some very strong stories and characters, the presentation is quite different and modern viewers coming in cold can find it quite daunting. Those who have a grounding in the modern show, on the other hand, can often get past the rough spots by comparing and contrasting with their knowledge of how it has developed in later years.
Current stories are generally contained in single episodes with a scattering of two parters. By contrast, the Classic show was serialised with each story running typically over 4-6 x 25 minute parts (with one epic running over 12 parts and with a prologue episode a few weeks earlier! All this time allowed for a more leisurely pace (and meagre budgets often called for stories to be stretched a little too much to get the most out of expensive sets and costumes). The earliest seasons ran to over 40 weekly episodes--a brutal pace for the actors who basically had 3 days to learn and rehearse then just a few hours of studio time to get the story 'in the can' and at some points they were only shooting a couple of weeks ahead of transmission.
My favourite Doctor? Of the Classic era, it has to be Patrick Troughton (the Second Doctor) although I also have a soft spot for the Third (Jon Pertwee). In the modern era, my favourite is Jodie Whittaker. This will be controversial as many disliked the idea of a female Doctor and others didn't like the direction the showrunner took the show. I have to admit I was resistant to the idea initially but won over completely by Jodie within moments of her first appearance.
TLDR: Doctor Who's been around a long time. Start in 2005, when you've finished to 2021/2, go back to 1963 and see how the show got here!

@@ToddReacts The original plan would have been even more taxing as they envisaged running the show year round (ie 52 episodes per year). While that just about works with soaps who have a large cast, it would have been killing for a show centered on two or three characters!
If you do ever watch Classic Who you will notice various excuses for lead characters--even including the Doctor--to be off screen for an episode as their contracts still had to allow for holidays so the writers had to take facilitate planned absences. The tight shooting schedules also introduced problems. In one well known case, the actor playing a companion was taken ill with chickenpox. Being too late to write the character out as the first parts had already been shot, the writers concocted a last minute explanation as to why the character (temporarily played by another actor) looked different for a couple of weeks. The hazards of shooting only days ahead of transmission!

I too watched the first episode when I was 9 years old. My favourite was Tom Baker the fourth Doctor, though all of them had a uniqueness. From the new series I would find it difficult to choose between any of them up to Matt Smith. I did watch the first series With Jodie, but just gave up. Meant nothing to me. If you mention an episode from the ninth Doctor to the twelfth I could probably describe the plot. To be honest I can not remember one episode from the thirteenth doctors series. Which is a shame, because Jodie is a good actress, the character just wasn't the Doctor, to me

The Doctor is a time travelling alien that goes about time and space running into trouble and doing his best to save the day. He is the last of his kind and has a companion with him to make sure he doesnt turn into a power hungry madman. The show invokes many emotions from happiness, sadness & anger. He has an ability which allows him to live on and change his face. Wont spoil anything else just in case you decide to give it a watch. It may take a lot of time to catch up but it is worth it. One of the greatest shows in TV history.

One of my favourite things about the show is how it gives each actor playing the doctor (and companion) a chance to give great preformances on some of the scripts, you saw some short examples here. The Superman comparrison really isnt far off, just imagine taking away his superpowers, giving him genius IQ and giving him a clear perception of how time is supposed to be and sending him off in a time machine, its a really cool concept. Each actor makes the Doctor their own with different personality traits but theyre all so good you can tell its the same character but you never know how the Doctor will respond to a situation. Peter Capaldi (12th) is my favourite actor to play the Doctor; he followed the youngest actor to ever play the doctor (Matt Smith) and completely flipped his personality to a grouchy grandfather from a young bubbly guy, it was a nice change

One thing I love about this show is that everyone connects to one of the Doctors. There's no real consensus on favorites and why. But you can love Doctors even if they aren't yours. The new version of the show deliberately set things up so that you can watch from that point without having seen any of the twenty-six seasons of the classic series. This is because the viewer tends to see through the eyes of the the "companions" to the Doctor, and each new arrival starts from the position of knowing nothing about this "madman in a box" before being swept up into his/her world, and whisked off into time and space in a travel machine which is bigger on the inside

  • @nikdik154
    @nikdik154 3 роки тому +4

Yes, multiple actors have played the Doctor. You're right. Without giving much away, it's like a process his whole body changes when he's critically hurt. Like dying in a sense.
But he's not a god. He loves humanity because of how we are. It reminds him of the people he lost. His people. His home. And maybe the hunger we have for war?
Plus there are two eras of the show. One was the Classic Who era which took place from 1963-1989, while the reboot show started from 2005 and it's still going on.

This show is approaching its 60th birthday. Which makes it the world’s longest running sci-fi TV series. I would start with 2005 and the 9th Doctor and after that jump back to the classic series when you’ve caught up. Just because the new series moves with pace your probably used too. They are very different in tone. The emotional and romantic stuff was more of new addition which was uncomfortable for a lot of the original fans. But kind of necessary to bring in modern audiences. So, you can imagine their are a lot of robust arguments about history, lore and Cannon. My favorite Doctor is Tom Baker from 1974-1981. He brought that alieness and Eccentricity to the role. David Tenant was basically the first pin-up and did bring in an audience the show didn’t really have before. It’s a great show and many you tubers react to it and the classic series. I’m sure you’ll fall down the rabbit hole

My favorite classic doctor is probably the 7th. But that might be due to the fact that his episodes were the first to ever be shown on german television, so he has a special place in the hearts of many older german fans. My favorite new doctor is the 11th, on the first picture I saw of him he looked like 16, and I was afraid I would like him even less than the 10th, but he turned out to be the opposite of what you expect.😘 And then there is the 8th. He only ever had one film but if you count the Big Finish audios he has a lot of adventures and I love his voice. But over all, I think Matt Smith.(11)

My Doctor was Peter Davidson (his daughter Georgia is in this edit in the episode 'The Doctor's Daughter' and she married David Tennant, who was playing the Doctor in that episode - very insestuous inside joke there - haha). Have seen the Doctor from the beginning: I'm now over 62 and can still remember the impact of the first story (but like many, I remember the second Daleks story better).
Please try to get and watch from the beginning.
1963, black-and white, as-live, more a theatre play than modern TV, but so intriguing. There are two versions of this 'pilot' episode, with different emphases on plot, character and back-story.
At this point he travels with his grand-daughter, who isn't actually, but may actually be his grand-daughter.
Stories vary from one episode to twelve-episode sagas even from the earliest days.
Some future science fiction, some historical, almost educational, but they set the rule: there are things that cannot be changed.
Some are so good, or so weird, or so cheap that you toes may curl, but stick with it.
Some stories exist now only as reconstructions, some from photographs and soundtrack, some remade through animation. a couple of hiccups in the 1980s, then haitus from 1989 to a one-off movie, then from 2005 to date.

If you ever consider watching the show,I would strongly recommend starting by watching/reacting to ONE story from each Doctor of the Classic era - beginning with #1 back in 1963; up to the start of the revived series. In this way,(if you choose to continue onward,episode-by-episode from the 2005 revival) you'll have already been able to quickly get a sense of the shows history and development. Plus, they will also make for really interesting reactions, imo!
    BTW,the New Doctor Who (from 2005 - ) is NOT a reboot. It's very much a continuation.

My favorite is 11 aka Matt Smith, followed by 4 aka Tom Baker from the late 70s era. After that it gets a bit more wibbly-wobbly for me.

To see what Doctor Who looked like to its kid audience in 1981, take a peek at ua-cam.com/video/yAOKjbOplQQ/v-deo.html It was originally conceived as a children's show, and aired on Saturday afternoon/evening. As its audience grew up, it became rather more sophisticated in its story telling, and the 21st century revival ("new Who" compared to "Classic", as if it were Coca-Cola) it is decidedly a general-audience show, but with plenty of thrills and scares that the small fry can enjoy (rather like Star Trek).

although i haven't watched it, i think my favorite is the first doctor.
with him we got to have this show. and so i choose him.
but if i had to choose another I'd probably chose the 10th, 9th was more like a halfway point between eras of the doctors to me and with 10th a new era began where the doctors regenerated into more, how do i say it, compassionate persons?

Started the day after The Kennedy Assassination. Season 39. (Referred to 13th as it is the 13th since the reboot, whereas Classic Who ran for 26 seasons 1963-89) and the 14th Doctor is coming probably for the Show's 60th anniversary in 2023. But don't let that back catalog (larger than all Star Treks put together) because it is worth the ride. I have been 9n it for 39 years. It is the best TV there is. BUT it is VERY BRITISH, so it not for everyone. I would suggest starting with the Reboot simply because it's more "modern" than classic who, because TV back in those days was very different and it throws modern people off if you aren't prepared for it.

To make it easy, he's effectively immortal, about 1000 years old but he travels throughout time and space. Has an affinity with Earth - he likes it, he was banished here for one of his regenerations...
He travels with someone to re-experience the universe because he's seen it all and done it all, so he chooses someone to experience it all through their eyes...
The new stuff was good but the last two doctors were a disaster...

All the clips shown are from new who. Classic who has a bit of a different vibe. For new veiwers, starting with new who, before digging into old who is best, although the cgi in the first couple of series might be a bit dated. The only thing you really miss out on is some lore regarding the timelords and some of the doctors classic enemies. For anyone else wondering, big finish has audio dramas and there have been a number of specials as well to check out. New who references a number of injokes as well. For example, when rose says daleks cant go up stairs. Its quite a rabbit hole

The Doctor has some of the greatest villains in sci-fi history, The Daleks (unstoppable creatures hellbent on exterminating anything not Dalek) and the Cybermen (cybernetic lifeforms who want you to be like them) from the classic series and the Weeping Angels (don't blink) from the new who when they started it again.

The best doctors are Tom baker Jon pertwee and David tennant. If you wanna start watching dr who it’s probably best to start with the new series not the classic series so it’s probably best if you start with Christopher eccleston’s first story which is called rose. It’s hard to think that in 2 years dr who will be 60 years old, to put that in perspective it started the Saturday after Kennedy got assassinated.

Of the 13 main actors to play the Doctor my favourites are David Tennant (10th), William Hartnell (1st) and Sylvester McCoy (7th) - that video is pretty useless for non-fans though as it really needs context and it's full of spoilers (though without context I think they won't mean too much to you and you won't be too spoiled really). Just get yourself back to 2005 and watch from Series 1 in 2005. You'll see it's far less intense than this video makes out - though it does have those moments for sure!

When you think about the doctor, David Tenant’s 10th Doctor is what comes to mind first before you think about the other doctors. David Tenant is the Doctor and will always be the Doctor. He just is.

This vid is, as others have pointed out, the scenery-chewing parts of the good doctor.
They missed all the jokes: one of the first and best, as it started the whole mystery of the doctor's name:
Ian Chesterton: 'Doctor Foreman, how are we going to get home?'
Doctor First: 'What? Doctor Who? What's he talking about now?'

The doctor has been alive for hundreds, maybe thousands of years, he is a timelord that ran away from what he should’ve become on a distant planet Gallifrey.
Different actors have played him over 50 years but all kept the story arc, apart from the last one number 14 who has destroyed the Canon along with the writers. Don’t watch the 14th if you wish to remain in the cannons history.
He gets companions to keep him on the straight and narrow because he has powers and knowledge Beyond his humanoid looks

Its a shame the video didn’t show a regeneration gives you the transition from one doctor to another basically that happens when one is dying.same doctor different appearance and personality but the same memories.

A show this Iconic, it has become part of UK culture, Even having the TARDIS feature on Google Maps. In Just 2 years now it turns 60, thats right 60 Years, What other TV show from any Genre can compare, I think maybe only another UK Icon James Bond with nearly the same length in time but an incredible Show, pity recent years has seen a sharp decline in ratings to the point where they desperately got one of the older showrunners back to Save the show.
