Man that is cool. We never could find a video on youtube of folks using one and that's why I decided to film it. I am planning on filming it more the next time we use it. Folks seem to like seeing it run.
Now that is unusual? I have seen several pieces of logging equipment but this is a first! Great job at being an original. Myself and my dad logged tong for over 18 years . We used a winch mounted trailer to back each log on truck in hook , place in middle of log to balance it and the reverse and place on truck, now that is work try that 20 or so times per load.oh well I was younger then well you know how it is . Well gotta go please be safe and thanks again for video as it was very informative.
I appreciate it. These trucks were common for pulp wooders. Most folks never used tongs with them because it’s so dangerous, they just don’t operate smoothly enough to be able to and thus chokers are safer. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I used one of these old cable loaders but I stood on the ground and pulled a lever it’s all a Balacin act I actually was pretty good at it I think mine had a old Dodge Rear end with a Break fluid setup
Nice easy gravy work😅😂. I've seen these around sawmills , but never been around one loading. It's much better than not having it , but still a lotta work , I can see
Good video. You need to learn how to fasten your cable the right way. Taken too long to load. 1hr tops to load. I grew up doing this. When I showed my dad the shortcuts. He fussed at first but the operated needs to be taught how to load sizes and how the cable is fasten to worked the loader. For example....16 foot logs loaded with fasten the cable once....size does matter and so does distance pulling the logs. If only we had a camera back in the day.....( 😂1970-1990)...that we could afford 😂❤
I appreciate the input. We were just trying it out and aren’t planning on doing it for a living. lol The goal was to load the logs safely and without breaking anything and we were successful.
@@redclaytraveler1949 yes they are and still handy. I have one on a 400 diesel farmall. They are the cats meow for logging your own property cuz you can skid logs as far as your cable will reach albeit one at a time, although I have tree length aspen and basswood and cut to length at the trailer to save time. Also try some logging tongs. Saves lots of ti.e hooking
Man that’s cool! We were talking about using tongs but we also wanted to test the rig out some before hand. We haven’t had a need to use it again in a while but we definitely will use tongs at some point I’m sure
Y'all gotta fix your heel bar on bottom of boom. Head of log should bump it when cable choked just right..be able to swing it left or right drop in between a fly's ass cheeks
I agree, we need to do some work to it. We don't use it a lot so it always gets put off. It makes life easier for sure though, a lot easier than bringing a skid steer and another truck.
I’ve been around those truck all my live but never saw anyone load like that. We rolled the truck up on higher on one side so the loader would drift over and hook in the middle. The logs would be on the side of the truck. It was way faster.
This was the first time we got a chance to use it and neither of us has seen one operating in person. We were testing it out and learning as we went, I appreciate the info. We are definitely not experts. lol
if a fella dozed out a trench beside your log decks, where the truck could be parked four or five feet below ground level, you could load out with a small frontend loader.
That’s true. When we got it home my brother unloaded it with a skid steer. More permanent setups like your talking about are really nice for sure. If we used it more often we would probably set something up like that to make it easier.
When it was a dump truck it didn’t always get great traction unless loaded. I would imagine it would be similar now, we haven’t had a chance to use it since I filmed this video unfortunately.
I've been logging 30 years and that old stuff we worked with was always unsafe, so we learned all kinds of little tricks and just did the Best we could.
All I could think of about 15 seconds into this was "oh my God there are two of them"...I think to add to the list of safety gear you need would be a cant hook/pole instead of getting your hands in there when that log starts rolling around on the truck. I want Red Clay Traveler to come home safely to his new dog!
I'm actually one of four. lol But this is the only brother I claim or love. lol We realized we forgot the cant hook as soon as we got there, which is weird because we have plenty of them around. lol Its only dangerous if it goes wrong. haha
Man I just bought a big stick loader and it need some work I’d love to be able to contact you and pick your brain about this thing if that was good with you!
I like it tho, I've worked several of those big sticks n got a short log international now w pulp wood loader converted to short log but manually swing, got to be straight w the pile
Damn that's a LOT of work !!
It is, but it’s quite enjoyable lol
When I got out of high school I worked for Brown Mach. in Louisville, Ms. building these. First time to see one working.

I loaded logs and pulpwood with cable loaders for the 30+ yrs.. wish I cud show you some shortcuts.. admire you..
I appreciate it buddy! We haven’t gotten a chance to use it much. Hopefully we can get more practice one day.

That is one heck of a rig right there! Can't go wrong with a old GM truck!
Your dang right buddy
@@redclaytraveler1949 Right on!
😅
Gotta luv the ol' Square Body Trucks
They are pretty dang good. It runs better than most everything around are place. lol
When I was a kid my neighbor had one on a 72 Ford f700. I bought it after he died and still use it to haul firewood.
They are really neat rigs. They really work well and are pretty simple to maintain.
Share a video pls

It’s definitely better to have it and not have to haul another piece of equipment to load with, we just need more practice lol
Need pole stick with pick on end it to help turn longs when loading ground person
Yeah that’s true. Next time we use it I’ll try to remember that, definitely make it safer and faster.

ILOVE IT
Thank you
Up in Northern MI, WI these were common back in the day. They were called "jammers" or "cable jammers" here
That’s awesome, we don’t see them often down here anymore. They are neat rigs

will the truck go in the woods? mine wont go empty. may try chains. ED

Need a long pole,so you can push the log around so you don't have to get close to it😅
Yeah, I wasn’t really following osha regulations lol
I've been logging 30 years and that old stuff we worked with was always unsafe, so we learned all kinds of little tricks and just did the Best we could.
We certainly aren’t experienced running this rig. We were learning as we went. I have leaned a lot from some of the comments on this video for sure.
Great video. Say big stick one more time I dare you.
Challenge accepted. lol

Scary! This made me nervous.
It’s only mildly dangerous lol

Yeah sure! We are rookies as well so I don’t know how helpful we could be. lol Send me a email at redclaytraveler@yahoo.com anytime
I'm adding my comment. Big stick sickness!
Always making my day buddy!
