We definitely should of had an episode where dancers battled for soloist.
1. Ethan really wants to be a featured dancer (dance this episode could have been his audition)
2. Ebby had a BIG moment with Kenzie about being soloist as a black dancer
3. Olive/Heath/Ariana need to compete against each other then the dance captain decides
Loved this episode - Ariana and Ethan's solos were so good
I think we can all agree a season of tns with Alishea as one of the writers would be epic. A fresh take yet with all the classic vibes.
Just listening to all her suggestions of what could have happened makes the episodes even more entertaining to watch.
I think Ethan's solo and subsequent talking head has been my favorite part of the season so far. I loved how personal it felt and like you said, how it wasn't a huge deal to mention it, it's simply a part of who he is
I truly dislike how the diary looks like. It looks too thin and new to be written by multiple generations of dance captians...the original one looked used and exactly how a diary thats supposed to be written and owned by a lot of peopl in it would look like.
Depends on how many dance captains there have been say there’s been 1 per each dance season up until season 1 that’s 20 that’s probably only 20 pages out of 80

I think nick should be written off TNS now because there is no structure left in TNS. Miss Kate took charge of a troupe looked over B troupe and we even saw J troupe which showed structure but we also saw full group rehearsal we saw her watch the small group, trio, duet and help eldon with his solo. Maybe they need to bring on a choreographer like Phoebe or bring in a studio head who knows what they are doing
yeah we havent seen b troupe since s7 and j troupe since s6 😭

Like why are we not seeing a troupe rehearse as a group for internationals like in S3 we saw group dances and bits of the routines which were featured at internationals if the production company didn’t have the budget they could have waited another year and made this season even better. Comparing S9 internationals to S3 it’s shocking
My opinions on episode 15 are mixed, it feels very rushed. I mean that ebby sub-plot should've been removed for more time with Anthony, Jett, heith and Olive discussing about whether to let Ariana back on the team, because Heith went from hating her to realizing that she should be on the team way too fast. I'd rather they'd have stretched that out a little bit. Maybe over a few episodes. Maybe instead of Anthony giver Ariana the solo, he gives her a duet with Heith so it's like a reverse of It just felt like the team came round to Ariana way to quickly and Anthony just giving her the solo at the end was pretty stupid but it made for a good cliff hanger moment and I hope it puts a bit of a strain of Ariana and olives relationship moving forward. Also I say team but it was only 4 members of the team, what does Izzy think of this or Pete or Ethen? You see what I mean. On a plus note this is the best Ethen has ever been in an episode, you can tell when he got emontial in his talking heads it was the actor's real feels and I love that, I know this is a bold statement but that moment is one of my all time favorite TNS moments. ( unfortunately Back to negative's as with my video editor brain on, but episode 15 felt quite poorly edited ) But to end on a positive note, overall I am enjoying series 9 I'd go as far to say it's the best series since series 6.

I feel like they are being too nice and trusting to Ariana, when Amanda came back in season 3, people found it hard to trust her and demoted her to alternate , and don’t even get me started on how she was treated in season 4 😭
the second half of season 9 so far for me is tanking... it feels like all of their budget, resources and just EFFORT went into the trailers and first half of the season, then they just gave up oml
edit: also about your point about ariana getting a lot of screen time over originals, i honestly think it's because kate roman is from CDC and they have to carry the tradition of having a dancer from CDC as the lead (first it was eldon, noah, richelle, now ariana) so, studio nepotism is a thing sadly with tns😭😭
I get what u mean but I think this point in the seasons most tns eps tank tbh. I think it isn’t tanking as much as season 8, I actually think this seasons probs strongest since 6

It's not that, we have many leads that aren't from CDC, even dancers from there that were completely overlooked and thrown away. Kate is an award winner actress, ofc they're gonna give her a big role and use her properly.
Also, it took the entire fandom to get crazy about Briar, critize them and even freaking world of dance for them to notice they needed to finally give her the attention she deserves, it took them five seasons to do that.

Another plot hole I noticed in this episode is that Olive says that Summer wrote in the Dance Captain Diary when Lily auditioned to re-join A-Troupe but Summer wasn't the Dance Captain at this point? Unless she just wrote about it later 😂
Wait, and didn't Skylar have the diary until Richelle became dance captain? That wasn't until Series 8, right?

I love this episode so much thanks to Shane talking head it made me cry tears of joy especially since he was so genuine , it felt so real and relatable I’m so happy that the producers kept it 😭🫶
Take a bow Shane!👏🏾👏🔥 That was beautiful! One of my favourite moments of this episode. Seeing Ethan doing the vogue dance and paying homage to Black, Latinx trans and queer people for pioneering this was very beautiful. First confirmation of Ethan being queer and proud of his identity. And him crying felt very real and very much Shane speaking for real and not just as Ethan. I love that for him.❤️ I only wish Marcus was still here to see Ethan dance as they were best friends.
I was so happy to see Piper again too! Her dancing to Even When We’re Gone gave me life! The Season 6 memories started flooding back!🥹 I want an extended version of that dance but it won’t happen until someone revives the TNS channel. I like that Piper encouraged Ethan to do the Paris programme. It would be amazing if they both made it. This is definitely setting up his potential exit since he missed out on getting International dances but I’m not ready to say goodbye to Ethan just yet. I’d also love an update on how New York has been with Piper and Amy.
I actually like how they had Ariana own up to her mistakes specifically to the people she hurt which was Jett, Heath and also Olive and Adele to an extent. I like how Heath didn’t forgive her immediately until the end where him and Anthony eventually warmed up to having her back on the team while Adele, Olive and Jett forgave her quickly. I just think if this season would have had more episodes, they’d be able to pace this plot better with the forgiveness phase being less abrupt.
The Ebby and Izzy scenes were cute. I’m worried Ebby will get hurt though. I hope not. The ending with Olive losing her solo was sad too. I think Anthony should just let the dancers re-audition for the Internationals solo. At least for the dancers who want it. So ideally Heath, Ariana, Olive and Ethan.

I've been waiting for a reaction to this episode since i watched it. I can't wait to see you react to the dance captain diary scene, ariana solo and the camera angles, and ethans talking heads. I am also ready for your reaction to the end of episode cliffhanger! I have a feeling its gonna be very mixed emtionals throughout the episode!

seeing ariana's solo makes me rlly upset that the next step yt channel doesnt post anymore because i would love an extended version to be able to watch. and i agree with u that the camera work for her solo was so so good.
to me ethan's scene was so heartwarming and i loved how natural his talking heads felt. shane did such an amazing job and im so glad ethan is getting some spotlight! 👏👏👏
also u pointing out ariana having so much screen time this season is very true. obviously i dont mind it and i think her characters good but it would be nice for the "og" characters to be developed more, especially since abt half the team was only introduced last season.

Skyler had the dance captain diary at the time so it’s impossible for Summer to have written in it, and Summer wasn’t even dance captain until an episode later
Except in the special where they get the diary back Richelle tells the full team to write in it so it isn’t impossible as Richelle told them to and at that point summer was still on a troupe
Those specials are not canon, they were filler for covid times. In tbose specials Richelle also finds out live that dance mania fans hate her while in season 8 she has no idea and even believes they can use their popularity in their favour, so Kenzie has to tell her people doesn't like them and she finds out there with her at the studio. Same with the diary, Skylar doesn't give it to her, it's in the studio and Kenzie goes for it to get it for Richelle.
@@jrlombardi5251 except they are canon Richelle was made dance captain in the dance captain diary special and then when the season 8 started she was dance captain despite having a different dance captain in season 7 and also in the special they mention the same renovations that the studio is confirmed to be having at the start of season 8 just like how Richelle had the diary in season 8 despite the fact Skylar still had the diary even if the special wasent canon that would mean there is no way Richelle could have had the diary again only the what if special wasent canon
@@dwcallum there was no different dance captain by the end of season 7, they just didn't have one by that time but Richelle was the one leading them and a year passed since they had to put an excuse for the time they couldn't film bc of covid, which was partly with the renovations they mention all over again bc it's needed as this is in fact a part of the show. Richelle can have the diary bc Skylar taking it with her is not canon, so it being in the studio in season 8 makes sense, Kenzie gets it for Richelle bc it's there and that's how she gets it. If the special were canon they would have done what they do with the off seasons and just make Richelle appear with it and give her a talking head saying she got it from Skylar, not making an entire new plot about it where Richelle doesn't have it and Kenzie knows where it could be but isn't sure bc she doesn't know its location just as Richelle but she knows it's there bc it never got out of there so she has to find it so Richelle can finally have it, it's its own storyline that goes against the special info, that's the difference between the canon and the filler.
Also, again, there's even other plots from those specials that directly contradict season 8 bc they're completely re-made, like Richelle finding out they're not loved by dance mania fans but actually hated by them, if you count the specials as canon then we have a multiverse thing going on bc Richelle finds out about the exact same thing twice in two completely different ways, places and moments.

Honestly, I love piper and all but her appearance in this eposide was random with no build up? Also if Ethan does get into that thing in France will he not go to internationals and the team will have to get someone else at the last minute. People also just forgave arianna too quick. Like heath went from hating her guts to basically being her friend in minutes.

Not only was it nice to see Piper, I found it also relevant to see what she has been up to. Everyone from step inside went to follow their dreams. Kingston became a movie star, Lily a director, Finn joined Radiation, Ozzy/Richelle/Cleo(and jude) continued with Step Inside, Kenzie and Heath went to nationals and Amy went to that Manhattan institute. All we knew from Piper is that she went to live with James in NY. I still feel like we lack information on what she has been doing in NY but it’s cool to know that she’s trying to get into international programs now
Too bad they didn't mention what Noah was doing. The character really disappeared from the map, right? Even Jacque was mentioned.

I think Ari was forgiven too easily too but I think thats just because they don't have the time to drag it out. But personally I like the way its written to be on Ariana's side, cus she was basically manipulated to go along with Grace, but when she wanted to stop, she was blackmailed, but she still owned up to everything. I felt bad for her.

Arianna's solo is one of my favorite overall dances of the series...I feel very sad for Olive because poor girl was so happy and Heath was robbed of his solo. Ethan brought tears to my eyes in all honesty and meant so much as a queer black man. I'm also going to agree with you on how the dancers should be auditioning because it's bothering me a lot.

as much as i liked piper returning i didn’t like how they did it. her solo was nice esp to even when we’re gone but i just fell like the reason for her return needed to be elaborated on. piper didn’t even have a talking head… even daniel who came in for one episode for just a guest choreographer had a talking head. i wished she had elaborated more bc i was acc interested in what she has been up to since her last appearance (which was extremely emotional). i wished she said that maybe she is coming to visit family and she needs to film this audition. bc i can’t imagine someone who went to live with their brother and his gf in a different country and then suddenly comes back to their home studio to film their audition…? like could piper not have rented a studio space in nyc? im just kind of confused. but the only thing i liked was pipers outfit, hair, makeup and how ethan was talking about his story and how natural it felt.
Literally after filming I thought why didn't she stay in NYC 😂😂 Let's make it make sense and hope she was visiting family too or something

And yeah there’s unfortunately a plot hole with the dance captain diary being brought back for this scenario because if Summer had the dance captain diary for Season 7 and wrote that stuff about Lily then that means the dance captain diary lockdown series that happened between Season 7 and 8 can no longer be considered canon as they previously established that Skylar took it when she left TNS for another studio unless it’s a different diary that Ariana and Olive were reading but I highly doubt it.
It also doesn’t make sense because Summer wasn’t dance captain for long either. And given that Kenzie and Pete found it in the cupboard room in Season 8, it doesn’t add up at all. Let’s assume that Skylar brought it back to Kenzie and Richelle in person after their zoom call and that Richelle at some point put it back in the cupboard room, maybe sometime while the studio was having renovations or maybe after she gave B-Troupe the approval to go to Nationals (which would explain why Kenzie knew it was in the cupboard room as Richelle would have told her). But then when would Summer even have the time to write in it? She left in episode 1 of Season 8 and the studio just reopened after being closed for a year so she wouldn’t have even had the time to write in it given that she couldn’t stay at TNS anymore after all the drama with Nationals. She didn’t even appear in the dance Captain diary lockdown series as they didn’t even establish her as a past owner of the diary so would she even be aware of it? I don’t think so. If anything Summer probably had her own personal diary. So yeah it doesn’t add up and has ended up creating another plot hole on top of another which is annoying because I wanted the lockdown series to be canon lol.
So to make sense of this, we now have to ignore the Dance Captain Diary lockdown series and assume that Skylar actually left the diary in the studio or cupboard after she left TNS to join Gemini (even though I don’t think she would) and then it was just left there until Summer somehow discovers it in Season 7 and then she put in back in the cupboard after she lost her status as dance captain and went to B-Troupe. And then Kenzie and Pete somehow find it in episode 2 of Season 8 (assuming Summer told Kenzie its whereabouts before she left in episode 1 of Season 8). Although that creates another issue of why Richelle wouldn’t obtain it after overthrowing Summer. Let’s just assume that Richelle secretly had it after Summer and then it put in the cupboard after Dancemania and then told Kenzie about it which leads to Kenzie and Pete looking for it and finding it in episode 2 of Season 8. I know this is messy but it’s probably the only way you could fix this major plot hole with the diary. If anyone can somehow make sense in fixing this in a better way then please let me know lol

also i just realized that after this season Kenzie is going to be the only one along with gen 1 a troupe whos been to regionals nationals and internationals thats so crazy. Even Noah only went regionals and internationals and richelle has only been to regionals (only on A troupe)
I would just like to point out summer wouldn't have written in the dance captain diary because of the spin off series skylar had it from series 4 and gave it to richelle/ everyone so at the time lilly was trying to join summer wouldn't of had it or been able to write in it x

I haven't seen anybody comment this but why is Piper filming her audition at The Next Step which is in Canada when she moved to New York? Are there no dance studios in New York that she could rent out to film her solo?

i know this might be a little controversial but this A- Troupe is probably my fave since S6 maybe since even S3 i love all these characters and i think they are so refreshing i hope not much change happens to a troupe in S10 in terms of the cast although i would LOVE daisy back i miss her lol 💕
i definitely think they're gonna be at internationals still at season 10!! i dont understand how this internationals works because it seems like they're only against france? like is this season just the first round of internationals? if there is, i think we're gonna lose Kenzie, Pete and Ethan next season (Kenzie to France, Pete because Kenzie left, and Ethan to France too)

I love this episode. I love that Ethan was very vulnerable and shared his sexuality in his talking head, it was real and pure. I love that Ethan was wearing heels while doing the solo. It's great to see Piper back and love the solo section she did, it brought Season 6 vibes. I feel so bad that Olive got her solo taken away from her. Ariana did so amazing in her solo, her dancing in Season 9 was amazing. I don't blame Heath for being angry at Ariana for the Bo Staff she took in Daisy's audition. I'm glad that Jett's character development has improved. I'm just waiting for the Season 9B Soundtrack which I'm excited about. I'm glad we got a heart to heart from Ethan and Piper. I wish we had more dances in this episode since it doesn't feel like Internationals ready. Since when Summer had the dance captain diary, she never had the dance captain diary at all. I'm looking forward to your next reaction video.

Olive is so sweet and cute. I feel like she forgave Ariana way too soon. Since Adele didn’t trust Ariana in 9A and Olive had full trust in her, I would have liked it if Adele forgave Ariana easily (which already happened) and that Olive was the one who was hard to convince. She could have gone all mad at Ariana and be like “Trust you?!?! I trusted you the most! And look what you did with that trust!!!”
But I guess Olive is too sweet for that

Completely agree about Ariana being the focus...I like her but it feels like there is some loyalty going on with Kate. Kinda disappointed how many episodes Kenzie isn't in as she is meant to be the leading lady.
Would have been a good dynamic seeing Heath be on A-Troupe with Ariana if he didn't agree to the decision and I guess we are not gonna get a reaction from 3/4 of the team after everything Ariana did!...

highlight of this episode was definitely shane's solo it was done really well! VERY unrealistic that piper has come all the way from New York to Canada, JUST to film her audition in studio 1, like she could have just said she's here to visit family 😭
I agree that it does feel quite rushed, obviously there's only 22 episodes so I think they've had to cram everything in, so it rounds up well in the end. i agree with the fact that Anthony has to take on all these decisions at his age, like I'd be stressing at night, the fact that the trusted adults who are paid to do their job aren't even doing it and all the big decisions have been left for me 😭
i do think Ariana's solo was really good, and also i really need to hear the soundtrack for 9B, so they need to get on itttt.
in terms of outside of the show, wouldn't heath then tell daisy that it was Ariana who sabotaged her, like if he has her on socials, or even calls her and then daisy can come back, because if I found that out I'd be storming my way back into studio A demanding that i get a chance to re audition for a troupe, because there's no way I'd be giving up a spot for internationals like that 😭
imagine kenzie comes back the soloist changes AGAIN, like can they stick to one person and assign the dances immediately and actually rehearse for them 😭😭
anyways im excited for Michelle's return soon and I can't believe there's only 7 eps left 😭

I agree with you about wishing other certain characters got more time dedicated to them this season. I mean, it felt like this would be their season to shine, but the focus has been mainly put on Arianna. I wonder if that will still be the case past this episode.
Decent episode overall, though I have multiple issues and nitpicks with it.

I just wanted to say, I’ve been watching these reviews quietly and I am enjoying them, please keep doing them as your viewpoint is always interesting!
I don’t want to go on and on about the flaws of TNS, I think that’s been expressed enough lol, but I wanted to say that I hope if there is a season 10 that they focus the back half of the seasons on the team picking out the dance numbers and rehearsing, that way there’s excitement built up for competition.
With this episode, I think this is a life lesson that Olive needed to learn about looking out for yourself, similar to Piper having to learn that lesson with Michelle (which makes it cheeky that Piper is in this episode, they should use her for the next as well so her and Olive could have a heart to heart). I wish they would have highlighted this a bit more-they are a team but they have to have their game faces on at all times. Personally Ariana should not have been let on the team for the moral of it all. But she definitely didn’t deserve the solo be given to her the way that it was after how severe her actions were.
I wish TNS took betrayals a lot more seriously because they are focusing on teenagers and most times teenagers are not as mature or graceful as TNS portrays them to be. Especially with them being COMPETITIVE dancers!

Why are we not having auditions for international soloist, duet and small group this season?? Like everyone shd get a chance to be featured. When you recall s2, they had auditions for every dance. Also I agree, Ariana should have gotten the chance to redeem herself and not just handed the INTERNATIONALS SOLO which is a big BIG deal.
You know it can’t take longer for Heath to forgive Ariana cause of the timing
