• Lake Overtopping Flood...
I gave a talk at the PAGES 2017 meeting about this:
• Outburst flood erosion...
Why do natural and man-made dams quickly collapse when the water level exceeds the height of the barrier, rather than just allowing the water to gradually overflow?
In this dam-breach experiment, a 1-m deep overtopping pond triggers a small flood by gradually eroding the compacted-sand barrier. By USGS, Oregon (2012-06-13).The lake behind the barrier is 23.7 m2 in area (not 10 as wrongly printed in the video).

this is pretty dam interesting!
0.1% damage leads to 100% damage
The power of Hydrodynamics must never be underestimated.
How they set up the experiment is almost more interesting as the experiment itself. Awesome job!
Conclusion? - add cement to your sand when building "real" dams! :)
The split screen killed it.
Why don't they use Huge stones and cement and steel rods to build a dam....
that's quite mind boggling how something so minor could turn to that
Meanwhile in California.
you skipped the best parts
"Break the Dam! Release the River!"
This made me need to pee but I was so engrossed that I pissed myself
I just love seeing sand bridges start to erode the hell out when its breached, its super interesting
WOW! I was surprised at how quickly this occurred! Great video!
Generally, when simulating the mechanical response with downscaled models, you must also downscale the mechanical strength of the materials, in order to have a realistic response. See f.e.:
This is very good dam
Thumbs down for skipping the coolest parts
What I like to play as a kid when there is flood after rain storm. Enjoy watching the pro doing it! Thanks!
Really interesting, thanks for posting this
