@@Slitheringpeanut So are "ethical pension funds". The people who want ESG, such as Larry Fink, are spending pension fund money to get their way. Folks need to dump those so-called "ethical" funds. The real problem is that fund managers like Blackrock got so huge that they can buy Hollywood with couch change and use it to bash the public with their social agenda. Hollywood now makes propaganda films and they are about as good as Soviet committee propaganda movies. For example, Madame Web is a film made by a committee and it's cringeworthy.

Most people do not earn anything in Hollywood via merit. They earn money from networking, popularity and perhaps a bit of nepotism(sometimes). Social capital is important there. Beauty is important. How many instagram followers you have is important. Who you know is more important than WHAT you know. Etc. That is show *business*, not a meritocracy.
Why do you think the writers guild or SAG doesnt want VFX artists to unionize(or atleast: they will make sure they never do)?
Because the fancy people would get payed less for playing make believe while applying "creative accounting practices" to their finances.
There are people in Hollywood who get payed for 3 hours(of "work") an amount that is more than what someone at the national poverty line will make in an entire year(and all of those normies do something essential probably, unlike getting payed absurd amounts of money to play make believe with their friends...).

Silence of the Lambs was even partly inspired by a real case, namely Ed Gein, a cannibal/necrophiliac guy who dug up female corpses to create a body suit for him to wear. Gein inspired many, many movies, most notably Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, but those movies couldn't be made today because it might make transgender weirdo's mad. There's a Greek myth about a monster named Procrustes, who offered lodging to travelers. However, he only had one bed in his inn, and if the guest did not fit the bed because they were too short, they would be stretched mercilessly until they were the exact length of the mattress. And if they were too tall, parts of their body would get removed so that they were once again a perfect fit. It is all top down management which is very common in Europe. Most European countries are socialist and the socialist mentality extends into the business culture. Problems are reported which then move up the management chain, decisions are made at the top, and policies trickle back down to the work floor. The process takes months and usually doesn't work. Unfortunately, this same management style is now infecting US business culture.

I used to live in China, and for YEARS i searched for great Chinese cinema. It does NOT exist. Cinema in China is AWFUL (even the Chinese complain about it, every Chinese person I knew had no interest in film because it was simply an uninteresting medium in their country). Even the movies that somehow get popular in/outside of China are really not that great. They are shiny and pretty and have wire-fu...but simply aren't good.(I will die on the hill that crouching tiger, hidden dragon was a mess of a film despite it's beautiful scenery and fight scenes). The reason this happens is because no film can get made in China if it does not conform to the ideology of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). They control how everything is portrayed down to every last detail so as not to offend the party. The result is that scripts are a mess, dialogue is little more than characters saying what they are doing or explaining their motivations so nobody can misinterpret them as something offensive to the CCP...it's BAD. It's absolutely SHOCKING to see this happen in a free society where, ostensibly, we can say and write whatever we want. I'm not enjoying seeing communist tactics applied to free democratic societies. But here's my bigger question: Where is the COMPETITION. I don't blame liberal hollywood for going insane, that's what they do. I blame people who AREN'T ideologues for letting it happen. Why isn't ANYONE trying to compete and make movies OUTSIDE of the WGA/Hollywood system? Start new film festivals and awards shows, make new deals with movie theater companies(I'm sure they are desperate for them). The guys who run Hollywood know how to make money. Bob Iger knows how to make money. The fact that Iger made a decision to cut Disney’s value in half, losing about $200 billion, shows that something else is at play here. The objective no longer is to make quality or profitable entertainment. The objective is to attack culture in such a way as to create more divisiveness and distract attention away from the billionaire class, controlling everything. Have people fight about bad characters and shitty movies, rather than focus on the loss of free speech, and authoritarianism in ordering people to take suicidal medical treatments or buy a car for which there will not be enough electricity to use it consistently - this is a great big distraction that Bob Iger is paid $32 million a year to be part of. Their shareholders in general, like blackrock and State Street are OK with losing their investors money. There is a much bigger agenda here. Jeff Bezos is fine letting the DEI idiots run his movie studio. He just does not want people to be thinking about the fact that 200,000 small businesses were destroyed by the lockdowns, and he was the recipient of $1 trillion that those businesses lost. Try to make a movie about that 😂

To make a Great Film you need nearly everybody in the process to hit a home run: the actors, the director, the writers, the crew . . .
And most studios played "moneyball" - just trying to get everybody in the process to hit singles, with, maybe, a double or two. The movies that might be Oscar bait, you go for home-run actors and double/triple writers.
These rules dictate that the scriptwriter is almost guaranteed to strike out because they can't write strong characters. They require you to diversity hire minor league directors and actors. Even when some of them rise to the occasion - they're still having to perform a script crippled before the first camera rolls.
And we see the results whenever we subject ourselves to Trek or Star Wars or the M-She-U or Shazam 2 or Rings of Power or Wheel of Time or Wish . . .

Twenty-five years ago, the chain I worked for was telling every newspaper in its chain -- largest in the U.S. at the time -- that they had to have focus groups to critique the newspapers. What we wound up doing was feeding pizza to a bunch of people who -- for the most part -- had no more writing experience than a poetry class in college 30 years ago. And we, as writers and editors, had to sit, listen and learn. It was pretty insulting, not to mention demoralizing. I think that idea originated in corporate HR, but I could be wrong.

Because they know when they create anything new with this stuff in it, nobody will watch it or care for it. So they use already established names to push their stuff and still not too many watch it. This is why every time you see these injections they’re always using older beloved names. They never create anything new with this stuff in it. Because they know it would be DOA.

Part of the problem is that the industry has become totally financialized over the past 10-15 years. It is the bean counters who are making the decisions. Movies are getting very expensive to make and the investors want a return on their investment. It all comes down to risk management. Go with something that has already proven to be successful rather than take the risk on something new. That is why there are so many prequels and sequels, as well as tried and true "formulas".

That they end up doing this soulless slam poetry-esque depression metaphor where all the kids are wearing black and spinning around while some middle aged man narrates. That’s what western cinema is going to turn into if it continues down the DEI/ “representation matters” path. The Russian movie making skills can go toe to toe with Hollywood. In the story, a female Russian surgeon is sent to the ISS to do an operation in zero gravity on a cosmonaut that was injured during his spacewalk. With his collapsed lung, he’ll be unable to survive reentry without surgery. That’s what she’s sent up there to try to fix.
The film is very good. Hopefully the two of you can see it before it supposedly opens in mid April in the US. Unless Hollywood blocks it. It’s an all-white cast so it won’t be a viable candidate for any “Western” film awards.

This is the result of the Rule of the Managerial Elite. It makes things so much easier for people who live in spreadsheets to be able to eliminate all the subtle differences between people so people can be reduced to a number in a box.

I try really hard to not bring up “this generation” and am aware that as a 40 year old that we raised them, but they have really been given the keys to power with no merit, and appear ungrateful, disdainful, and bored by the summation of humanity’s effort prior to them. They have been rewarded with these initiatives, will live their lives in a cloud of superiority, pass away, and leave destruction in their wake.

The thing is, it's really on the Boomers and Gen-Xers (I say Boomers mainly because Iger and Kennedy, for example are both in their 70s now; Jennifer Lee is in her 50s) running these companies that are letting these activists run wild. Ultimately, it comes down to these execs and board members buying in to the Critical Theory and anti-white indoctrination that's been taught in universities since at least the late 80s, with each subsequent generation of academics becoming increasingly radical as these theologies mainstreamed over the last 35 years.
It's not really going to stop until academia itself is purged or even obliterated as the rite of passage it became after World War II, since this is the source of these social cancers.

Now we know EXACTLY WHY DISNEY MOVIES COST TWICE AS MUCH AS THEY SHOULD DO!
The Director/Producer has to wet nurse the gender studies hire to do their job on set because they’re inexperienced and the wrong person for the job and this costs 60k a day!
    Unbelievable!

This DEIA poison stands in the way of quality Cinema. The rules and bans are proscriptive to the point they remind me of Dolores Umbridge's endless Educational Decrees.
My challenge would be to recast and rewrite any Iconic prior work of Cinema under the restrictions of these rules. Would any such project retain its Cinematic merit?

Storytelling used to come from creative individuals who had something to say and something to share.
That is virtually extinct now, stories give us nothing but the company line.
Good writers aren't allowed to be creative, insightful or unique.
Bad writers can't, so they rely on following the company line to get paid and that's where their investment ends.
"Company line" can never inspire, entertain or provoke thought.
It's empty and hollow and untalented grifters are taking jobs away from talented, creative people because Corporate doesn't want them.

I hear this a lot from various people, “I don’t know why this is happening.”
I know Film Threat is not a political channel, but the missing connection is to politics. Politics is the science of power. Whether you call it DEI, social justice, or cultural Marxism, it is collectivist in nature.
Collectivism is the opposite of individualism. I think it’s difficult for Americans to understand because this country was founded on individual rights. Those rights are under attack and it’s important to understand who our collectivist enemies are. Ultimately, the whole thing is about power.

they think collectivism means community, which ironically the woke/feminists themselves eroded with the destruction of the family unit and now more people are atomised and lonely wanting some sort of community.. the progressives create the problem then everyone votes for them to solve the problem but the solution is actually just an extension of the problem, such is the allure of communism
