- Take a brief trip on Route 44 after the 55 split, then see the 44 Plaza on December 26, 1981. Whatever happened to Caldor, Fayva, and Edwards Food Warehouse. Oh, yea. Enjoy the cars, too.
Amazing that Shop Rite trucks look exactly the same now. All the vintage cars are so cool.

Caldor was a department store, somewhere between Walmart and Target. Good for buying records, especially when they had label sales. Behind the scenes fact. This Caldor had a PA system. If you pulled up in front of the store, and you had a CB radio in your car, the PA system would pick up the CB transmission. Many times, we made "in store" announcements from our car.
I've always loved this video, more recently somebody uploaded an 11 minute video with original audio of the exterior/interior of this store from 1992 or 1993. It is an amazing video that you should definitely check out. The front facade in this 1981 video is the same as it was in that video, but the inside of the store probably looked very different in 1981 (probably didnt have the rainbow interior like it did in the 1992 footage)
Watching this makes me appreciate my childhood in Poughkeepsie more, I do remember before Caladors and Finest grocery store were built that's where the city dumped the snow that was plowed off the streets, does anyone remember Big Ben dept store on main street?
Loved Big Ben. My father and I salvaged some brinks for front stoop after building was torn down.
@@bryflyguytry when ever our tv would act up we went to Big Ben and used the tube tester and stopped at Carrols to get burgers for lunch
@@sv6320 we stopped eating there because our neighbor drove through the parking lot and saw rats on the tables, I've lived in Charlotte north Carolina for 40 years but I still miss what Poughkeepsie used to be in the 70s
@@sv6320 now we know why the place closed, sad thing is back then places like Carrolls were probably paying off the health inspectors to get a good grade
@@sv6320 learned the hard way , dont have vinyl seats in your car with the heat. Its not bad living here, in some parts feels like the city ,but go down the road a few, then it feels like the country. Best thing is no snow like Poughkeepsie

That Caldor is stop and shop now and there was a KMart where shop rite is but they closed so it’s empty 😊
My nephew works in stop and shop, I remember the old Caladors, and the old Finest grocey store, which is ironic that i worked in a Bi lo grocery store in Charlotte, owned by the same company and we sold Finest products

Sorry. No video of Grand Union. There were 2 on Main St. , Empire Market which I think is now an art supply place, and the one near Corleiss Avenue, which last I knew was a Rite Aid.

They never got either. Closest Walmart/Sam's is Fishkill. Not too many bug retail chains on Route 44. Adam's Fairacre Farms is always busy.

10 years later still no, the floors on the inside are falling apart. Now that whole plaza is closed except Arons, a rent furniture place. Where you waiting when you were looking at Caldor, what was to the right of you. Or what was behind the shop rite? You didn’t get on film. I heard it was Frank’s, that building is falling apart as well.
@@rebo4479 I’m trying to remember. I must have pulled over on the side of the road. Not sure if we call that Burnett or Tucker Drive now. The berm in front of what’s now Stop and Shop clearly isn’t there anymore.
