    What pisses me off the most about the "I wanted to see that (the genocide of the Air Nomads)" is that we do see it, we see Aang's home destroyed, we see pieces of fire nation armour and banners littered around the temple, we see the skeleton on Aang's mentor and friend, we feel Aang's guilt and pain and realisation of being the last Air Nomad, we see the genocide, we just don't see the blood and gore of it.

      I have to agree. Depicting doesn’t automatically mean you condone something, it’s the execution and the way you handle it that is important. Surely if something is shown without reflecting upon it or even criticizing it (if we talk about the sexism of the water tribe for example), that would be a problem. Just taking it as it is, as if the injustice and inequity is something natural and just self-explanatory and justified; that’s where I would have a problem in general.

    • @moonsigil

    I have this feeling that the reason they chose to depict Zuko's scar like that is that they didn't want to genuinely have a character with a deformity be shown on screen. I'm a medical student and I've seen burn scars and let me tell you, that is not a scar. They just felt uncomfortable with really showing it. But hey, showing genocide is okay!

    I HATE HATE the way they're going about Katara. This feels like its being made by people who criticize Katara's character and say that she's annoying and uninteresting when in reality she is a traumatized girl who experienced her mother's death directly and has taken on that role not only because of how nurturing she is but also because she found meaning in making sure that her loved ones are safe and cared for. The whole point of the Southern Raiders and Puppet master episodes is that Katara's fighting has always been meant to protect and not to harm. Water is the element of life, for goodness sake! She finds her strength in how much she cares. Also I hate it when people criticize the fact that she became a mother and can't comprehend the fact that she got to be there for her children unlike her mother who was killed prematurely. While her childhood was marked by the loss of her mother and her father going off to war, she got to see her children grow up and also met her grandchildren. Imagine how meaningful it must have been for her. Anyways, thanks for reading my TED talk.

      I understand your POV about Katara’s choosing to be a mom and raising her kids, but I also criticize how Katara’s whole WaterTribe identity, agency and passion for helping others was pretty much shoved to the side post-ATLA all for the narrative that she was the “Avatar’s girl” (and by that, I don’t just mean Aang- she also made herself emotionally available to help Korra as needed). Katara as a character does tend to gravitate easily towards nurturing and caregiving, but in the show Sokka reveals it as the result of trauma when they lost their mom. She was helping raise kids and even delivering babies… but deep down domesticity was not what she wanted. The way she’s vocal about Sokka not willing to sew his own clothes and her doing cleaning and cooking while he is off playing soldier says a lot about how she feels about traditional gender norms. In the show we also see her being the glue to her friends, doing her best to be emotionally available for everyone and trust that they’ll never leave or betray or disappoint her. In S3 we see how her dads’ absence greatly affected her- and these feelings of abandonment she had repressed throughout the whole time she was travelling with Aang, The kid she would have learn how to approach with careful, coddling demeanor so as to not give him reasons to run or storm away from things he didn’t want to hear. She’s a girl who was passionate and feisty and willing to fight for what she believed in… but at the same time had to choose her words with Aang because he was the sensitive kid Avatar. The whole LOK narrative that tells us Katara was willing to stay at home and raise kids while watching Aang leave her and take their youngest son with them frequently. It’s like the narrative says suddenly Katara was okay not having her family together when in the show… she wanted everyone together as a team. She became a healer (when she didn’t want to be known for healing!) and raised the non-airbender kids while Aang went off with Tenzin and Air acolytes to focus on the Airbenders really implied and unbalanced and unhealthy dynamic in the family they had… which is ironic, since wouldn’t it have been a great example of Aang demonstrated how the world could be culturally blended with his bicultural water tribe and Airbending family? Tenzin doesn’t acknowledge his WaterTribe heritage at all; Kya and Bumi where shocked when the airtemples didn’t even know they existed and Kya.. was just a healer. I don’t know… I feel like Katara deserved a much better legacy than the one she got post-ATLA .

      IIRC that's actually what they wanted to make, but executives insisted on a remake as a "safe bet".
      PS I realize I'm fighting a losing battle against virtually all fandom wikis, but FYI the proper term is dilogy (with a short i as in trilogy). "Duology" is pseudo-Latinate gibberish. That has been around for hundreds of years, so I can't even blame "people nowadays" (much) instead of half of the Early Modern English grammarians having been overly confident semi-educated blowhards. Regardless, the consistently properly constructed terms (dilogy, trilogy, tetralogy, pentalogy,...) have been around for thousands of years (naturally with changes in pronunciation and inflection).

    Katara being motherly also shows the trauma of war. Young girls and teens becoming mothers to the children around them bc if they don't what will happen to them. Having your childhood ripped away to protect others is devastating. The scene where sokka says when he pictures his mother he can only see katara now is absolutely heartbreaking but beautiful and we're never going to get that. This also ties into what is happen in Palestine, the Congo, and Sudan. Its real life and should be shown

    Re: them taking out the pistops. I would also argue that the Gaang's pitstops throughout the series is fundamental to exploring the world building and getting to know the people that are affected by the war, all around the world. That's also the point of Zuko's episode, which was getting to know and putting faces on people who were directly and indrectly affected by the war. If the Gaang don't see these consequences, or these people who need help, then why should we as an audience care about whether Aang defeats the firelord in the first place?
    Re: Katara's motherly qualities being toned down. You make a great point about how the show shows that you can be motherly AND a good fighter at the same time, and I would also argue that Katara's motherly nature was intentional to her as a character, not just to show that women can be both, but also for Katara's internal growth specifically. The whole point of Katara acting motherly is that it's because she lost her mother at such a young age and had to grow up quickly and take over the household. Sokka even mentions in the scam episode that whenever he imagines his mother, she's wearing Katara's face. That's because Katara HAS been acting like a mother throughout her whole childhood. The whole point was that she had to grow up so quickly that she never had time to be a kid. So much so that Aang has to point it out to her that she still IS a kid in the first episode! It's central to the show's theme about war robbing children of their childhood and innocence !! and they took it out !! what !!!

      I love this comment. I'd also like to add that in the episode where Toph and Katara fight, it made me realize that Katara, HERSELF, feels that being the motherly one IS HER and that she has to be an adult. It's the same point that you made, but I just wanted to emulate how incredibly nuanced the show was able to depict what the consequences of the adults' decision has on the youth that follow after.
      The thing about the show was that it never made child-me feel like an idiot or that morals were spoon fed to me. You were allowed to think and ponder the different perspectives presented to you (aka, that one desert episode with the two tribes xD)

    Disrespecting animated content by making it into gritty and ugly live action is the peak of stupid. Fantasy is meant for animation adaptations because it isn't limited by CGI or hard stunts. It can in fact do sth live action can't, look magical and not like our world.

    • @cinnamonroll96
      @cinnamonroll96 9 місяців тому +11

      Agreed. I think it’s kinda sad that live action is theoretically being seen as the last step or Cherry on top for an animated show, when animation can just bring certain things to life that live action wouldn’t be able to do (as well/as much). It should be taken more seriously as a medium or one of multiple ways to depict and make a story into a show or movie. Like with certain shows that benefit from being live action and are better bc of it (I would especially say things like sitcoms e.g) so it goes with all these out there, crazy, magical etc. stories and themes. Plus it’s so difficult to not only make it happen in live action but also how to translate certain aspects of animated shows like a lot of the humor. Especially with things like avatar. Like the facial comedy is on point, how will you be able to translate such things without it becoming cringey.

I thought the 'One Piece' adaptation was done really well (good set, stuntwork, acting, etc.) and it meant I could show my parents and other people who don't want to watch 45 anime episodes just to see the full original team assembled why I love this story. The anime still overall tells it better, though, BECAUSE it has more time!
      But Avatar is a much shorter, non-anime-watcher-accessible story to begin with, so it isn't clear what a live action version brings!

    Sokka’s sexism was really important. It showed he was not a bad person but a product of his environment. And it also shows that it was not acceptable later on and he changed. As someone that grew up with a brother similar to sokka it’s very important to see that. He’s a character that we love but he’s wrong. That’s an important lesson for a lot of people. And women are able to relate with their own experiences with katara, toph, Azula, etc.

    About Katara's character, the fact she is motherly is also directly linked to the fact she lost her mother very young and in a very traumatic way, so she would feel responsible for the caring of her father and brother because of that. Also, because of the ingrained sexism of the Water Tribe, she would automaticaly be put in this position of caretaker for being the only girl/woman of her family other than her grandmother, that would be older and couldn't take care of all of them. That is also very important for her characterization.

    I fully agree with you that the side quests and quiet moments are essential to the story. Generally speaking, an audience can't form a meaningful connection to characters and their personalities through cool fight scenes and CGI alone. So you need to see Aang be lighthearted, telling stories and resolving minor conflicts through his empathy and jokes. That way, it packs a punch when he realises all those things are useless against the Fire Lord. Aang hates the fact he will need to use violence. It's his WHOLE THING.
    It's disconcerting if the live action show makers want to replace the quiet, lighthearted, funny moments with images of genocide and violence to force that connection between the viewer and the characters.

    There's another good reason to have "detours" on the adventure besides supporting Aang's character: we, the viewer, and Aang too, get to see the world. We have fun there, we meet people we feel things for, and we see in person the world that needs saving. It's not just some place, it's a place we know and love, not just "people" in it, but distinct characters, so we feel even more urgent about the danger looming over them.

    One thing that also drove me absolutely nuts: I read somewhere that they got rid of the Sozin's comet deadline, because ''we couldn't know exactly how old our actors would be for the subsequent seasons''. Like, EXCUSE ME??? I get that you have to deal with your actors aging, but just set the deadline in 3 years or something instead of one if that is a concern. You would still have the thing that Aang has to master the elements in a short time line (e.g. compared to Roku, who needed 16 years), but you got rid of the aging problem.
    Removing that deadline takes away the main driving force of the show. I mean, yeah, the avatar has to master all elements and the fire nation needs to be defeated, but Sozin's Comet was really that 'all-or-nothing' point: the fire nation has to be defeated before, because otherwise the comet's strength will allow the fire nation to take complete control over the entire world. HOW are you going to REMOVE that ESSENTIAL point of the story and only introduce it in the next season??????

    • @ThePrincessCH

    • @himenyx153
      @himenyx153 9 місяців тому +4

      They "got rid" of the ORIGINAL deadline because it's literally impossible for them to film the entire story without them aging, they didn't say anything about completely removing the deadline. Like you're this upset for what exactly? Where did you even read this? People are blowing the littlest things out of proportion I swear. I mean dude, they literally showed the comet in the trailer. What do you think is going to happen?? It obviously has to have a deadline or it would make zero sense being there. It's far more likely that instead of Roku saying "you must master the elements by summer's end" it will probably be something like "you must master the elements very soon" or something alluding to a deadline, just not with an exact date. Then we'll find out later, maybe in the library or something like that.
      And it's the same with Sokka's sexism. They NEVER ONCE said they are completely getting rid of the plotline but people are acting as if they did. "Sokka's sexism was-" THERE IS NO "WAS", IT'S STILL THERE. Everything is going to naturally be toned down a bit because it's not a cartoon on Nickelodeon with animated and sound effects. The show would be ridiculous if it wasn't toned down. I just know the cast and producers are regretting opening their mouth by how absolutely unhinged people have been responding.
      Just wait and see or don't watch it. Either way, the original show will always remain intact.

  • @nitzeart
    @nitzeart 9 місяців тому +6

    They didn't need to remove Sokka's sexism. They should have expanded on it, tbh. Like when he forces a kiss on Suki shutting her up when she's talking (even is she likes him too this isn't ok). It was iffy and they could have addressed it. She should have been mad, then sokka has to work through his sexism and apologized, learning, it could have worked as a character growth moment.
    Also they could have worked on Aang's sexism too. He literally forces himself on katara, kissing her, dismissing her when she had already told him she didn't want to be in a romamtic relationship at the time. And this is never addressed either in the original series, just brushed off. (Yes even if she ends up liking him too, this isn't ok.) Why don't they mention they're gonna work on that?? On expanding and building this relationship to it's healthier. And yes they should have worked on Katara being motherly towards Aang while at the same time both being attracted to each other, because that's weird. But they can just develop Katara and Aang's characters so that by season 3 they are more like partners and colleagues than Katara mothering Aang. But her being soft and moderly is a key part of her trauma and upbrining, she had to grow up too fast (like so many other young girls do in the world). She can be that AND eventually still be soft and nurturing but not the mom of the group, maybe when everyone else also has development and become more independent and responsible. They didn't need to remove it entirely just evolve it, along with her maturing and dealing with her trauma.
    There were actually problematic stuff in the original animated series they could have addressed, but instead they chose to remove any difficult, controversial complex topics to make it more palatable. And because aparently modern audiences can't cope with complex themes I guess... Oh, we are we living in censure times.

Two things, firstly they were going up there to find a water bending teacher for Katara, and then also Aang when he learns that there is a time limit to learning the elements. And the fire nation attacked because they knew Aang was at the North Pole. In the live action version, the actor has to play that charisma whilst maintaining an air of subtlety, as if he copied the animated version, it would seem fake and over-acting.

  • @usagi77777772003
    @usagi77777772003 8 місяців тому +4

    I couldn't watch more than two episodes...the acting's (esp. Aang and Katara -two main leads) pretty bad and the show's obsessed with telling rather than showing. So much of the characterization relied on characters either talking about themselves or others describing their character traits. I want to see our characters grow, not listen to them being described. For example, if a character is a glutton, I'd rather see it for myself by them pigging out rather than them going on a monologue describing themselves or others doing it for them
    Also, there's no chemistry between our main trio (Sokka, Aang, and Katara) and their entire relationship was rushed. It's like the creators just assumed we watched the OG and will project our preconceived love for the characters onto their show, so they didn't develop their rapport/relationship at all. They go from meeting each other to practically instant family members who act like they've known each other forever. It's so jarring and unbelievable.
    I really wanted to like this adaptation too, but sadly, I can't pretend it's a well done series that captured the spirit and essence of the original. If anything, I would say that the showrunners missed by a mile and failed to understand what made the original animated Avatar so beloved.
    It's like they chose to prioritize surface level aesthetics, lore, and "grittiness" over character development. All of the major characters were either watered down or had core personality traits removed. Lol, they wanted to appeal to Game of Thrones fans without realizing that it's the complex and morally grey characters that's the heart and soul of that show.
    It's laughable that an animated series made for kids featured much deeper characters than this LA counterpart. All of the character flaws were either removed (Sokka's sexism is practically nonexistent, Katara's no longer fierce or headstrong, Aang no longer crushes on Katara, and Zuko is much less villainous) or heavily toned down.
    The creators are so determined to make the characters instantly likable that they watered down any of their supposed "problematic" traits. But forgot that in doing so (without adding new traits), you end up with much blander characters who are no longer as interesting as they could have been. This makes it even harder to build natural rapport or interject conflict between characters. Katara, esp., has zero personality and all of her scenes are excruciatingly boring to watch.
    By far, it's the characters and their relationships/growth that made the original Avatar so unforgettable and yet, the showrunners don't seem to understand this. If they did, they wouldn't have skimped on all the relationship building and character work. Everything's rushed to the point where none of the emotional beats feel earned and it's like the characters are just going through the motions because the director says so rather than experiencing it all organically.
    I really don't understand why the showrunners didn't prioritize their characters above all else and make sure they're all well developed enough for the audience to fall in love with them. After all, people will forgive anything as long as they care about your characters...
    And despite all the bad writing, I could've at least stay engaged as long as our cast has amazing chemistry, but alas, it's just not there...I'm bored to death.
    Overall, the writing and acting just isn't good enough to hold my interest...One Piece Live Action is still the gold standard when it comes to adaptations -at least they concentrated on character writing and relationships above all else.

    For the creators of this remake to devalue the original series as "just a kids show" goes to show that they absolutely did not watch it and they absolutely do not understand it.
    Sure, it was a kids show. But you know what else it was? a show about WAR. A show where a father purposefully and hatefully physically mutilated his own THIRTEEN YEAR OLD child for something as simple as speaking his mind. Then sends him on, for what anyone knew, was a literal snipe hunt that he'd NEVER succeed. (This same father, years earlier was going to KILL his own child "just because" basically. )
    This is a show where a young boy watches his family die and is so deeply traumatized by it that he loses his humanity as a literal guerrilla terrorist hiding in the trees with a few dozen other KIDS who can assume were orphaned or displaced at the hands of the Fire nation.
    This is a show where a father has to abandon his children to go to war, causing his daughter to force herself to grow beyond her years.
    THIS IS A SHOW WHERE FIRE BENDING HITLER WANTS TO DESTROY EVERY OTHER NATION. Not only does he want to kill them, he was going to BURN THEM TO DEATH.
    But yeah, just a kids show, right? Game of thrones, huh? Oh boi I can't wait until Sokka and Katara f*ck each other!..there's enough R34 of that, so I guess it's possible.

    im always begging these movie studios to stop doing live action adaptations bc what do live actions bring over the original animated film ???? like if they're trying to make it more "grown", the amount of cgi required in a live action atla feels more cartoony than the real animated show. Plus, using real kid actors means a lot needs to be cut out to keep filming as fast as possible before they age out of the role ... just more disadvantages than advantages i feel

    As a Percy Jackson fan who loves the tv show adaptation that we got, I really hope you guys get the amazing adaptation you deserve. This looks worrying but I think it’s good to have an open mind - different mediums will have to slightly change the story to work with the new format, but I think some of these changes look iffy. From one fandom who had terrible movies and made up a funny catchphrase to cope to another, I hope y’all get the adaptation you deserve. 💜

    i wonder if a lot of the change comes from how all recent shows/seasons are only 8 episodes long. like how are you supposed to put 20 episodes of content into ONE 8 episode season
    personally i haven’t been a fan of 8-12 episode seasons, like take me back when every show season was like 20 episodes!!!! more content!!!!

      That might make sense if the run time was not the same. 8-1 hour episodes (480 mins) vs 20-24 min episodes (480 mins).

    The mention of violence reminds me how bending specifically was designed to allow for fight scenes without gratuitous violence. You still got the spectacle and the compelling dynamics of a fight scene, but bending makes it palatable to all audiences and less brutal.

    Sokka’s actor lied about being a native (he’s just white) and even after he was exposed, they still went ahead and kept him and then filmed it

    My question is why make a live action when they could just animate the continuation of the story? 🤨

  • @tdaetaunm
    @tdaetaunm 9 місяців тому +1

    Like Hannah mentions around 6 minutes in, this show was perfectly communicated through animation, and one of the key reasons why it worked so well is due to the choice in using anime animation style instead of American. So much of the action, humor, and story of this show is charming because of the classic Anime characteristics. I'm curious and concerned to see how that translates over because they can't capture the same facial expressions or funny background moments in the same tone with live action. For example in Book 2 when Sokka drinks the cactus juice - without the anime style it would have come across differently. 'One Piece' gives a little bit of hope, but even then I could tell how significant the anime style was to telling that story, too.

    i feel like i'm going to need to binge the original show after watching the netflix as a therapeutic move. i was so sad when the original creators left the project - especially know how much passion and love they've put into the original show and its story.

    I *really* hate to defend these decisions, because A) I don't support this show in *general,* I think live-action remakes are a plague and I wasn't even on board when Bryke were involved; and B) I could easily end up being wrong and it could be executed as poorly as everyone is expecting.
    THAT BEING SAID. Respectfully, I think some people are going way too overboard with some of these reactions. I don't actually think that Sokka's initial sexism is some kind of integral and necessary character trait that couldn't be toned down. It would not be that hard for a writer to find some other kind of conflict to base those other scenes on--especially since they said the sexism was 'toned down,' not removed entirely.
    And the most important thing I think needs to be remembered is--from what I can tell, most of these are not official statements made by the writers or anything, they are casual comments, taken out of context, from the ACTORS. These actors are pretty young, and more importantly, aren't the writers. They may not fully understand the rationale behind why the writers made the choices they did--and even if they did, they may not be able to articulate that reasoning terribly well in an unscripted interview.

    i respect your opinions. i watched the original series since i was 12 and it's my comfort show. but honestly? i'm pumped for the netflix one. at first i was skeptical because of course why make live action when the animated one is good? but then i saw the trailers, the cast, and behind the scene featurette. it looked amazing to me. which got me wondering, why is this getting so much hate? was it because there's already a pre-existing prejudice? i feel like a lot don't actually watch and read the interviews live action cast & crew and instead just taking words out from a quote someone tweeted, then made an extreme argument. it slowly feels like many of people just nitpicking because they can't overcome the hate they got.
    what bothers me a lot was also about many got disappointed because bryan and mike left. but what many forget is that the show was NOT solely created by them, there are a lot of talented writers of the show that worked on the original series that make the atla we love today. when i get to know there are predominantly asians in cast and crew, i feel relived as asian myself. they wanted to make a faithful adaptation, and i truly want them to succeed.

    I also feel like not showing the genocide of the Air Nomads is meaningful because it brings us closer to Aang's perspective. There's something even bleaker to me about the fact it's already over, that the fight was lost 100 years ago. The Nomads are gone and there is nothing left to be done about it. We will never get to know their final moments, see their perspective of events. Actually showing the massacre takes away from that sense of loss and powerlessness. It makes for a less interesting and thematically coherent telling of the story, with all the added negatives of gratuitous violence.

    It really sounds like this is being adapted by people who didn’t like the original story. I really didn’t like it as a child because I remember Aang being very annoying because he acted like a child (as he should, since he is one). It seems like these writers thought the same thing and decided to ignore that part of his characterization because of it. If you don’t like the world and characters you have no business writing this show.

    I think the fan base gives Brian and Mike too much credit. Every few years they put their full support behind a live-action effort and talk about creating new animated content. After a bunch of hype, they ubruptly leave the project because of creative issues. I feel like it's their way of staying relevant. If they cared about the integrity of Avatar: The Last Airbender, why keep pimping it out. Why not leave it as is, because it's basically perfect as an animated series. Instead, finally make good on their word to create new content in the Avatar universe.
    I don't think Avatar needs to be live action. I don't think most animated media needs to be remade in live action. We're all gonna' watch the first episode though at the very least. All we can do is hope Netflix really tried, and then go watch the animated version again.
