  • Magpies are cheeky birds known for digging through trash cans and being a general nuisance around neighbourhoods in Edmonton all year long. Many people search for ways how to get rid of magpies, how to build traps to catch magpies or how to scare magpies away from their yards. Despite their bad reputation, magpies are smarter than we think. These birds are intelligent members of the corvid family. They can remember human faces, solve puzzles and some magpies can even imitate human speech.

Circle is the name of the magpie who found friends in local artists Trew Facks and Gabs. When Trew and Gabs discovered Circle, he was injured and abandoned. They nursed the magpie back to health and he keeps on visiting the young couple, squawking a special chirp whenever he wants to fly by. Trew and Gabs even have a TikTok account for Circle with almost 200k followers.

I don't get the hate of corvids. They're my favourites along with robins. I feed the crows, rooks, magpies and ravens here. They're endlessly entertaining, playful, intelligent and very lovable. How horrible people set traps!

I know! I have a neighbor who feeds these annoying, noisy little birds who make a racket all day long. He feeds them at least ten times a day and we never get a moments peace from their endless high pitches screeching. While the magpies put out an occasional chirp and they are on their way. But he shoos them off. Its so annoying to watch these awesome birds get chased away in favor of annoying little noisemakers. About a year ago, a baby magpie showed up in our driveway. He was just walking around, and tried to fly away when I went to check if he was okay. But he couldn't get more than a few feet. I brought him in the house for about a week. We fed him stuff from the garden, gave him water, and just basically left him alone. After about a week I took him out to my yard to see if he could fly again. He was still having trouble. We brought him back in and out for a few days, noticing that the other magpies were picking on him. When we last KNOW it was him, we saw him getting pushed around a bit by the others, but him holding his own. I say know it was him because after that we just couldn't be sure which one was which. However to this day there is this one magpie that allows us to get pretty close to him and is always hanging out in our yard, stealing peanuts and seeds from the neighbor, and hiding them in our grass and siding. We know in our hearts its Barry. We called him that because the first thing we gave him to eat were berries from the garden. We feel pretty special knowing we have a magpie for a buddy, I must say. But this video is on a whole other level. I'm jealous!

Charming story. But it seems to be no reason for them to be considered pests. All creatures are here for a reason.
