  • One way law enforcement works to "protect and serve” is by getting guns out of the hands of criminals, but CBS News discovered thousands of guns once carried by officers turn up at crime scenes around the country every year. A survey of more than 200 police departments found most sell or trade their used guns.

What a coincidence these firearms that are sold by law-enforcement end up in crime scenes!

You’re a dumb liberal, the cops traded their old guns for new ones at a discount. Just like you traded your old car for new ones, all this was a business transaction so taxpayer don’t have to flip the bill. The gun dealers than sold these guns to the public, now you want to blame the police?

These clowns arent telling you the full story it was stolen. You cant sell a firearm to a minor and its a felony to purchase a firearm out of state without going through a legal process. They are given to gun stores to sell which is normal and still have to go through the legal process of background check. Other than that this is an outlier when it comes to gun crime

Wow, it took how many decades/centuries for the news to find out that LEO Agencies sell off their surplus guns? They do this to upgrade or replace guns for various reasons. The biggest changes came when Law Enforcement went from revolver to automatic & the now recent switch from .40 S&W to 9mm. When I retired I bought my "old" duty gun after it was sold off (.40 S&W) to a firearms wholesaler FFL. I went through the background check like anybody else who buys from an FFL These surplus guns are no different than guns of the same brand sold new or used from the same dealer. They normally cost about half the going rate of a new model of the same gun, but come with the normal dings & scratches from duty use. Former Police guns are imported from all over the world and sold here as surplus (Makarovs, Jerichos, Walthers etc, you get the point) and they like others sometime do end up in the hands of criminals. CBS you need to further investigate to see how many are stolen or straw purchased. I see this story ran coast to coast through local CBS stations. It seems like you wanted some politician to pick up on this and try to ban this practice. Check out all the MILITARY surplus firearms that are sold in this country, even our own Government sells surplus firearms to CIVILIANS, real MILITARY GRADE guns and have been doing so for over a century! Criminals will get guns, no stopping it. Look at Chicago, strictest gun laws in the country, and they don't work. Remember these guns turned up at CRIME SCENES meaning something illegal was done and the law did not prevent it. Criminals will ALWAYS criminal.

If it was illegal to sell police guns why don't the cops know this? Because the bubblehead blonde actress recited her lines like she was told to do. If the ATF told them it was illegal they either don't know what they are talking about or they lied. I bought a used Glock with no markings other than the factory serial number that was a MNPD gun through a legal gun dealer. My brother was FHP he bought his first issued pistol when they changed to different guns as a remembrance of his job with FHP.

Tax payers provide the funding for police departments to purchase firearms.
By selling or trading them in through a LICENSED gun dealer, these departments save tax payers real $$$$
These guns are then sold to other LICENSED dealers and then to the public.
If pookie or ray ray steal and then use one of these weapons for criminal purposes it's not the police department's fault
