Thanks for the great video! I decided to get a Denis Wick 2L for my new cimbasso and it plays so much better with the new mouthpiece. 😊

When I was playing on a regular basis my go to for Bass Trombone was a Schilke 60 and Tuba was a Conn-Helinburg 7B. However, I am a fan of the PT-50 as well. But truly a mouthpiece is just a piece of the puzzle for each player. Finding the right mouthpiece takes time. I tried lots of mouthpieces over 30 years but go back to my old faithful ones. Always wanted to give the Dennis Wick line a try. Great video. Hope you keep making wonderful music for everyone to enjoy.

Mouthpieces are a process and not always a simple one. I'm glad you like the videos, thanks for watching!

For Bass-Trombone, I typically use one of three sizes: WEDGE 1.5G, WEDGE S59, or a bazooka sized Marcinkiewicz Model 107. The M. Model 107 is perfect for pieces that require playing softly after sitting quietly for long periods of time, as it allows me to play with zero warm-up. For Jazz, I use a reamed out M. Model 107 that can really blast out the pedal tones.

I went through three mouthpiece search AFTER having played huge Slokar bass trombone (on my Yamaha Xeno 822g) pieces and never really being satisfied. At the end of the first phase I settled on a Wedge 1.5G (no longer available) for chamber music and light stuff, while my daily driver was a Wedge s59. But I always struggled on the S59 with upper register. Then I looked for a piece for my tenor - a Rath R400 - and settled on a Wedge 4G, sometimes for high stuff switching to a Hammond 11L.
But a year ago I bought a Wedge Gen 2 108 (.280") and a Wedge Gen 2 108 (.280"). I tried to like the 110 and it was better than the S59, but the 108 was a better fit EXCEPT, when pushed, the sound gets hard and doesn't blend as well as the S59. So now I bought a Wedge Gen 2 108 (.300") and a Wedge Gen 2 108 (.300"). The new 108 sounds like a parger mouthpiece with a great round sound from pedal e-flat up to c above high b-flat. Playing the Creation on this is just as easy as getting through Bruckner 7 or 4. the new 110 is my new "bucket" mouthpiece. I slap on the Wedge enhancer and my pedal range gets mouch more powerful without loosing too much on top, but it's not as flexible as the new 108. What's interesting is , that the new 110 has very similar dimensions to the S59, but doesn't "feel" as large on the chops. And it's a tad freer blowing without losing too much resistance.
Nice to meet other Wedge bass bone mouthpieces.

It's really cool to see that you use such a wide mouthpiece range on the trombone family alone! I can't push my Wick 6BS on tenor to sound bright all the time, but originally felt bad using anything smaller, thinking it was a "cheap" solution, because on euphonium especially I use much larger pieces. I played a 4AL on mine for close to a year but now I'm deciding between an SM3X and SM4X.

It's all about finding what works for you! I spent a lot of time in school thinking had to play a certain mouthpiece. Sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't. At the end of the day we are all different and play differently.

My current mouthpieces appear to move in the opposite direction with my current tuba mouthpiece being the Heritage 5L while my euphonium run a SM2U. I pondered staying large on alto trombone as well, but is currently using a HeavyTop 6BS specifically to counter my thin sound on a 12C.

Whatever works! It changes overtime for me big, small, back to big and then small again!

I play a Heritage 3AL for tenor trombone and a classic 00AL for bass trombone. My friends call me crazy the 3 is beautiful in all ranges and the 00 is very warm sounding.

I can understand the 3al for tenor. I have done some trials with that. The double zero though, that's a lot to manage for me.

I get that! It was for me at first but it’s helped my range and tone for all my playing and it’s helped me relax a lot. I can go fairly high with it but it starts to break around Ab4
Edit: the punch that the v cup of the classic gives is also very nice for bass trombone.

I typically play a Denis Wick Heritage 7CS which is a great mouthpiece to try!
