25 Reasons You Should NEVER Visit CONTINENTAL Croatia

  • Back in 2015, i wrote an article called 25 Reasons You Should NEVER Visit Croatia. It got one million hits in 24 hours and was by far the most popular article I have ever written.
    I recently did a video version for my new channel, Paul Bradbury Croatia Expert.
    {youtube}TU6FIW6pCcg{/youtube}
    While feedback was overwhelmingly positive, several people pointed out - correctly - that the 25 reasons were more or less Dalmatian things, rather than Croatian.
    I thought about it, and they had a point, so in 2017, I wrote an article to counterbalance that - 25 Reasons NEVER to Visit Continental Croatia.
    And now - six years later - the video version, brought to you by the Fat Vlogger.
    {youtube}_2KIOllixBw{/youtube}
    Going live at 19:53 tonight.
    That was six years ago, before I learned SO many more things about continental Croatia, of Welsh telephone boxes in Vinkovci, random English pubs in fields in the middle of nowhere, and cute llamas in Baranja. So many things that we will be having another video later in the series called 25 MORE Reasons NEVER to Visit Continental Croatia.

    I'm glad you included my hometown Osijek 9:11. I posted recently a video on my channel of a walking tour in Osijek. I wanted to say that this part of Croatia is unfairly neglected when it comes to tourism since mostly all we see online are videos of our coast,islands (which is all very beautiful, no doubt whatsoever about it), but I think this area has much potential to attract more tourists. Greetings!

I was really happy to hear your opinion. My first few videos I have watched from you were related mostly for Dalmatia (which is great) but I did slightly resent you didn't spoke about inner Croatia but now, I am quite pleased you have also decided to give some time to inner Croatia (yes, I am from inner Croatia). Wow! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that you mentioned Bucijada 😄. When the event first started a while back, I wasn't too optimistic that it would gain much attention, but over the years, it has become a really big event. In the past couple of years, a lot of tourists have been visiting, and I am sure that after watching your video, a few more might plan a visit. Anyways, I loved your video and content! It's always great to see what non-Croats living in our country think about us and our beautiful land, even though you have been here for so long, we could say that you are one of us now 😄. If you ever plan on visiting Bucijada (again?), let me know and I'm buying you a pumpkin beer 😉.

    Chapeau! And thank you very much for this ironic and yet so informative contribution about the homeland of my ancestors. Rarely have I laughed so heartily at how strangers see Croatia. The British humour, this irony, which sometimes borders on sarcasm, simply inspires me. Because it - this British humour - corresponds to what I experienced as a child, through and from our old people. It is wonderful to note that Europe and Europeans (after more than 70 years of forced marriage to the Serbs) are slowly seeing us as we are. A part of the European cultural sphere. as someone who lives in capital of croatia ( and who lived most of teen years and his 20ties and part of 30ties in iceland, norway, nederland, UK. ( wales and scotland to be exact, did not like london area so i moved.)
    with many relatives all over croatia the older i get more and more start to be very annoyed by cities. i had an opportunity to buy vacation house at coast, but coz it was in a city and i hate crowds, i hate when i go to coast in summer and it is packed with people, i actually decided to buy cottage with some land in far north of croatia. such peace and quite, nature, fresh air, no crowds, nearest city is 30 min drive and it is a slow, calm city. i always loved north of croatia, maybe coz i spent so many years in iceland and norway. i dont know the reason, but it is like whole other state, completly different than the rest of croatia. i would highly suggest north of croatia to visit, everyone goes to coast, but north of croatia is so rich with history, nature, so many castels to see and places to visit. and like i said it is so different than any other part of croatia.
    only coastal parts i like, are mostly islands, the further he better, i love korcula, but not main cities and parts of it wich everyone visits, i prefer areas wich are small in population and where almost no one goes. i can have rest, recharge batteries, instead to be stress out coz of crowds, traffic jams etc..

Zagreb has a rich and interesting history, and was always acting as sort of one of the important centers of western world frontier bulwark against outside threats from eastern and southeastern invaders, like when Mongols invaded, burning it surroundings and laying siege to Kaptol and Gradec in 13th century, etc, or the fact Zagreb being 3 centuries or more long frontier capital to protect from Ottoman invasions deeper or further into mainland central Europe, and as a place for refuge for rest of conquered parts of Croatia areas through its history... Anyway, thanks for your work good sir, cheers.

    Isto vrijedi za Kopački rit u Barnji , Park prirode Lonjsko polje itd itd...

    Nice to see videos like these. It is understandable you don't have the time to explore every single bit and put it in a video so I hope you don't mind a few things that came to my mind which are not included.
    1st - The roads are made out of wine - Continental Croatia has events called "Wine roads" when multiple wineries open their doors or organise events for visitors. Sleeping outdoors is not unheard of.
    2nd - Tread the path of Suleyman - In the place of called Kopačevo, the entrance to Kopački rit nature preserve, there is a small replica of a bridge Sultan Suleyman made to cross over the swamps and surprise Hungarian defenders. Kopački rit is also one of the biggest hotspots for bird watching in Europe.
    3rd - Little Vienna - There are quite a few towns in the continent clinging to the name Little Vienna due to their secessionist architecture inspired by Vienna some of them being Varaždin and Osijek.
    4th - The Franken castle - Castle Prandau Normann in Valpovo has a rarely seen blend of architecture, because the owners probably were to lazy to tear down the old parts of the castle they just built the new next to the old. So one part of the castle contains a 14th century feudal tower and walls connecting to renesanse structure and walls leading to a baroque palace.
    5th - Unhealthy tourism - If you like biking you can bike all the way from Varaždin to Erdut (border with Serbia) with some of the trails going trough nature park Mura-Drava where you can see eagles, hawks, deer ... and enjoy the local cuisine and bring back all the calories you have burnt.
    6th - The getaway of a rich nobleman - Forest park Jankovac hidden in the only high ground in Slavonia, area called Papuk, was the summer getaway of an earl. Since slavonians are basically accustomed to lowlands and flatlands the Forest park Jankovac is one of the most untouched forest regions in Croatia.
    7th - Croats still like going medieval - Jankovac, Orahovica and Ivanovac organise medieval fairs where visitors can shoot bows, eat thematic cuisine and watch as knights fight the Ottomans.
    8th - Croats turned dining into a treasure hunt - Every major city has restaurants that are easily accessible but the best ones, ones that make traditional delicacies using local seasonal groceries, are out in the rural areas. Take restaurants Kormoran and Josić for example, to get to them you will pass through one of the most rural areas of continental Croatia.

    Paul, have you ever noticed in Zagreb that the culture seems to be dominated by women? I went to downtown Zagreb for the first time today and I felt like I was in the twilight zone. The men were dressed down in sweatpants and very docile and the women were dressed up in business attire and walked faster than the men. The masculine energy of the women here is something I’ve never seen before. In America the men are the ones dressing up, playing the masculine role. In Zagreb it’s the total opposite. What’s up with that?
