I've added a gator guard on my front keel, from an earlier video you did. Works great. Have a small one just in case. At $1 a square inch, it is kinda expensive. But it works well.

This seems to be a very common issue with older Hobies but very few videos on how to repair, I am going to give the gator patch a try, I also plan to attack the crack from the inside with backing soda and CA glue, between the two that area should be bulletproof when I am done, thanks for the video

So I've a tandem I bought one night....thought it was a hell of a deal back at the start of the pandemic. Turns out the whole tail end you could penetrate with your fingers it was so weak. Well, melted lowe's buckets and all.....I wanted to step up my game. Fiberglassing has always been something I've wanted to dabble in. But these patches after hearing you explain them sound almost a better solution. I can't wait to get a few of these ordered and swap out my field kit too. Thanks for this vid sir!

High expansion foam to fill big holes, sand to shape, then take to a lineX dealer and just bed line it with high end poly bed liner. Fixed for years. lol

I tried using expansion foam on my plastic kayak. It doesn't flex with the kayak which resulted in water seeping in and finding voids. I ended up ripping the foam out.

LoL - you called it - hot plastic does not seal against cooler plastic !! It’s almost like lead solder dropped onto a cooler metal surface.
That gator guard is good but way too expensive! I’m looking for keel guard but don’t want to blow that much cash on such a small sheet.
Great video - thank you, sir!!

Hobie outback are notorious for cracking there... the stress of the mirage drive from peddling causes the it to crack. Even after repairing it it will crack again. Curious to how this gator patch holds.

Great video although I always cut corners round, eliminating potential peal points. I bought a cracked white water kayak yesterday for $1. I removed silicone and poly gutter stuff 'repair'. I drilled holes at crack terminals (a la Liberty Bell) and a few more to wire and draw in expanded cracks. I explored several plastics before deciding on kitty litter type bucket and with soldering iron and hot air gun found that the plastic readily mingled with the kayak plastic. When done I tried to break it with a few heavy handed thumps and it was absolutely solid. I removed draw wired and plugged small holes with same. I hadn't explored UA-cam until after and was pleased to find that my approach was sound enough bit will order a plastic welder. ... or maybe just fabricate a 'shoe' for one of my soldering irons and us bits of an old teflon baking pan for smoothing melded plastics. I'm going to overlay the wear prone areas of keel with bucket or drum plastic overlays.... Rounding any errant corners no doubt. Again, great video!

Probably because rotomolded kayaks like Hobie and Jackson are polyethylene. Blow molded kayaks are polypropylene. Not every kayak is made the same and from the same materials. The stuff he is talking about is for polyethylene.

Like you mentioned, you can use plastic. I’ve seen guys add a rear round hatch, and use the kayaks plastic to fix the hole or cracks. I know this kayak already has a rear hatch, but that’s one way. Also thought you’d test the kayak in your pond! How is that pond doing anyway? I haven’t seen any updates about it. 🤔 😅🤙🏽
