  • Yes before I rebuild this gear into a final version hardware wise, I first must build out my complete ProxMox cluster and make sure I have the right process for adding my nodes, Then test them out and prep for the final add of my local 1 TB disk for local high end VM build outa with my NFS VM backup resources. Only once this is all working then can I start to mess up the hardware to get it to fit into my rack. Please note that you do not have to rack mount your cluster. It can just set on a table and be done with it like I show it in this picture and video. But!!!!!! Why do that if I have a rack to work with! YYYYYEEEESSSSS! This is what makes this fun... Like the video if you like this stuff. Keep reinviting stuff and think outside the box always!
    Your tech bud...

Good video sir, These are good boxes, nice little cluster setup, small footprint too !!

Hello! Nice presentations, I have the same hardware and the same cluster...I am using 8 micro Dell! I'm curious why don't you use SMB or ZFS for sher storage?

Check out the update I put out tonight! Yes I am using both thru a TrueNAS enterprise level Dell R720DX system with DAS SAS and SSD storage arrays to simulate a real data Center level NFS/SMB usage deployment. The TrueNAS (with ZFS) and I am also using SMB for data mode transports as well but keeping them in their right places to get more from each. It gets pretty busy but is also a lot of fun! Great questions by the way! Here is the latest! Here is the latest udpate... ua-cam.com/video/qAeSOv6hqv4/v-deo.html

btw if you need more storate you can use the M.2 WiFi slot buy a adapter for M.2 NVME and use put 2230 NVME SSD into it i have done that and install TrueNAS on to that drive and for SATA and M.2 NVME on the mother i used that for storage...I have like 12 of these there are awesome for testing hypervisors.

Yes, I knew that but having two network connections is more valuable for my needs

I added a 2.5G NIC in my Lenovo Tiny instead of the WiFi Card to have dual NIC. They are also availabe as dual 2.5G NICS. But the singleport I have, fits in a unused 9 pin sub D port. Just break out the metal piece. Dont know if the Dell have such one too.

Yes it does have a 9 pin port mount that is not nominally used. So yes you do it using the PCI-E NIC card... You use the WiFI card insert port and take the Wifi out and out int he 2.5 NIC instead

so you have 5 baremetal pcs each running proxmox on their m.2 drive?
then you have 5 x 1TB drives , are these in a virtual ceph cluster running on proxmox ?

Close, but you are missing the common 24 TB NTFS shared drive to host the VM themselves over a ten GB Network.

I'm assuming all the clusters have to be mirrors of each other?

And here we have part of the people that promote the scalpers/hoarders problem. Driving the prices up for the regular consumers, by buying in bulk and making things difficult for everybody else. thank you

OK well that is new. My goal was to show Tech people that they don't have to spend a lot of money on IT stuff and reuse older PC gear to reach the same goal. To save money.. Sorry if this offends you in any way. But that you will have to deal with for all of this cost me just $500 (including power) to do. Pretty good vs. $5000 in cost for hardware and power bills. Have fun dude and it is OK i promise.

@@leadiususa7394 this video is great, I have gotten a ton of sff machines over the past few months from the ecycle pile and was curious if running these machines as nodes under a single cluster in prox was possible. I know now, thank you!

@@domsw0rldI'll just add a note for others that might come across this thread in the future.
There is not need to have more of the same machine to create a cluster. Several machines with the same processor with similar RAM and storage configuration. Why similar RAM. Well you want to allow enough to failover a given VM without getting into swap. The reason for same processor is to avoid changes of instruction sets.
I hope I have the right intention.
