5 Times Age Statements Left Bourbon Labels! Do you Remember These?

- An age statement isn't the end-all/be-all for Whiskey, but it does help a potential buyer know more of what to expect from the bottle. Along with proof, mash bill, and who distilled it, age is just another piece of information that helps us make a decision. In our experience, whiskey drinkers love transparency and the more information they can get, the better, so it's no wonder that some whiskey drinkers get upset when an age statement is removed. An age stated bottle vs a bottle that recently lost the age statement doesn't mean it's automatically going to be worse, but it does stand to reason that most people will take the knowledge of the youngest whiskey in the bottle over not having that information. What are your thoughts on age statements, especially on bottles that have lost their statements over time?

I remembered all of these. I am so old. WT 101 8 year was the first decent bottle of bourbon I bought when I turned 21.
The most important removal was EC SB.
Informative video!
You’re kind to say that putting a big number on a bottle can be confusing. I’m old and cranky and feel like that is straight up deceptive. Well played spirits brands because I’ve fallen for it.
As consumers it is easy to expect that a big number is an age statement but it can be deceiving if you’re not looking super close and the word “recipe” or “brand” is in fine print making the number meaningless.
Great vid. The two of you play off of each other so well. Enjoy watching your work. Great idea, must be tough coming up with new/fresh topics. Keep it up
Fun video! I've seen the "8" on the standard Benchmark bottle trip-up a few people as well.
All I know is that I want that candle now.
Glad, on the subject of age statements returning, to see that Knob Creek has brought 9 back
And they added an age statement of 7 years to the Knob Creek Rye whiskey.
Absolutely loved this episode!!!
Thanks! We had a lot of fun making it.
I appreciate the video 🥃
“Not a joke, my health is fine.”
I love it!
Age statements are like the use of "small batch" as just marketing gimmicks. Some barrels reach peak maturity in 5 years while some take 8 years and very few take longer. Taste is more important than an age statement.
Thanks for the episode!
I don’t care about age statements.
Who distilled it, was it altered, is it good?
I'd rather see no age statement than a blatantly misleading, meaningless number on the label - like Ancient Age 10 [star] bourbon.
I'm always on the hunt for the ole Virgin 7 year bourbon bottles. 7 year HH juice for 15. Yes please.
Recently I tried some Jim Beam from 1974 which had a ten year age statement. It was in what felt like a ceramic bottle with a cowboy riding a bucking bronco! Tasted great!!!
Yeah! Those old decanters can be great. We've had a 10 year age stated before, too, and it was pretty tasty, especially for 80 proof. We've seen lots of Beam decanters stated in months, as well. We have a few empty ones that are age stated as 101 and 180 months old.
Yeah when I pick up a Bakers 7 year, which I really like, I always look for the oldest label on the neck of the bunch in the store.
I like to have an age statement, but it's not crucial. I like plenty of stuff that doesn't have an age statement. 🙂
Y'all might want to check out the difference between "formally" and "formerly." 🙂
8:44 So six years was "very old?" 😂
9:12 I noticed on my most recent bottle of George Dickel No. 12 the No. 12 is missing. All it has now is Superior Recipe. I wonder if they didn't delete the number to eliminate confusion.
Although I do feel 6-8 year is the sweet spot for me, I don’t really stress over the statement not being on the bottle, as long as the flavors don’t change.
Heaven hill 6 yr bib. 12 bucks.
We remember those days!
You said the current WT101 does not have an age statement. The current bottle you have in the video states on the back label, ..."aged for up to six to eight years"... Many people take this as meaning it is 6 to 8 yrs old. I wasn't sure & have not contacted WT/Campari yet, to ask.. But anyway, how did you know that it was not an age statement & just marketing BS?
I think it has something to with the language, "up to six". That would mean, 6yrs max. But right after that in the same sentence, it states "to eight years". That makes no sense. It can't be 6yr max & up to 8yr, but that's what WT wrote on the label. If anyone has info on this, please educate us on that.
Thank you!
Lol, like but no answer?
The OLCC Website still shows that OWA107 is 7 yrs old
I like a bottle with an age statement on it, but it's not the main selling point. It can be 25 years old and $750 and it's a no for me. I like what simply tastes good and not harsh / costic. I like 6-12 years and $30-$175 range
Wild turkey should put on the label "after a multinational corporation bought us out, we have been treating the us market like 2nd class citizens as well as dropiping the 8 yr age statement in the us market only. Also we will br raising our prices again soon. Your welcome america"
Eagle Rare 10 is it for me…nice to see it back
Fun fact, it actually never left, it just moved to the back of the bottle! But yeah, now it’s back to the front.
@@ItsBourbonNight I did not know that, nice trivia!
@ItsBourbonNight the 12 on Elijah Craig moved to the back before it got removed. Moving to the back is a bad sign. Glad Sazerac/BT changed their minds on that one.
I am ok as long as less than 4 stays identifiable. after a minimum of about 4 years, I think the age is less important with those aged in new containers in the US than those aged in used ones elsewhere.
Old Charter! There was even a lawsuit about it, but it looked like it got dropped.
Think it was 2015 or 2016 that Elijah Craig lost its 12 year age statement and went to the current bottle style. Also in 2016 Knob Creek lost it's 9 year age statement and it returned 4-5 years later depending on your location. Cheers
Knob Creek Rye now has a 7 year and a 10 year.
Yes, but the new KC 9yr, post 2020 is not even close to the pre 2016 9yr. They brought back the 9yr, but didn't bring back the whiskey. They must be using all (or mostly) barrels from the lower floors & no barrels over 9 yrs. Probably using all the older barrels & upper floors for 12yr, 15yr, 18yr & SiB. Pre 2016 9yr probably had older barrels & higher floors in it.
@motohead077 I have heard this, too. When the new 9 started appearing, I still had several bottles of the old discontinued one and sent a 8oz sample bottle to Jason at the Mash and Drum. He did a side by side with a new bottle on a livestream and picked the old one as the clear winner. By that time, I was down the rabbit hole of malt Whisky from Scotland, so I have not had the new one. Cheers
@@DonnerPassWhisky oh, nice, thanks for the info! If you have a link to that vid (or title) feel free to send it. Thought it was mostly me with the KC, cuz I have not seen much of anything with whiskey tubers talking about that. Just some people online saying the KC 9yr in the last yr is even worse than 2020-21.. My palate is not very sensitive, but when the KC No age 2016-20 came out, I didn't even think it was KC at all. I ordered a pour from a waitress & thought they messed up or were trying to rip me off (which happens there often). They showed me the bottle & that's when I found out when they dropped the 9yr in 2016.
Love you guys, but I believe you meant "formerly," not "formally.".
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
I think you meant “formerly so many years old” not “formally.” 😜
Here's one for my Homies!
I think I'd be more interested in a bottle having an age statement added than I would be disappointed by a bottle having an age statement removed. Is that being a sucker for marketing shenanigans?
I feel like if heaven hill was gonna drop the 12 year minimum age statement on the barrel proof release, they at least could have blended bourbon that was as good as they could possibly make it. A124 is absolutely mediocre.
Elijah Craig for me has been the most blatant difference and the most important for me.
"Formally" vs "Formerly". Hmmmm...
Age is just a number Youth is a state of mind...Oops, wrong topic. In the end what really matters is how the whiskey tastes. Would you prefer a good 8 y/o whiskey or a GREAT 6 y/o whiskey? 🤔🤔🧐
I see Dangling Participle's......Oops!
