Thank you so much for this series of videos. I dropped my 50mm f/1.4 this afternoon and bent the ring exactly the same as yours. In my case it would only focus over the range from about 1m to infinity, not any closer. Your guide was invaluable to show how to get the lens apart without damaging anything or having any odd parts left over after reassembly. Your instructions are clear, and above all, absolutely correct at every step. I straightened the ring using a small bench vice rather than just pushing against a flat surface, and then checked that the plastic sliders fitted and would move smoothly before reassembly. Fortunately I didn't need to go further and separate the optical groups, so no risk of getting dirt in or harming any kind of alignment or calibration. I'm delighted to report that my lens now focuses quickly and smoothly over the entire range once more. It feels good as new. Thanks again, you've saved me the cost of a new lens.
Great series of videos. Granddaughter dropped lens. I was quoted $200.00 US to repair. I was able to dissemble, repair focus ring and reassemble in about a hour. Lens works great. Thank you.
Glad that my videos have helped. One more tip: you can unscrew the ring on the last lens element, that way you have access to the rear three lens elements. Keep in mind how the middle lens element was there, make sure that you put it back as it was there. Also, remove those lens elements if you really need to, because it is very hard to clean them perfectly.
Thanks for this. I tried all of this including rasping the edge around that piece and it hasn't worked. I dremel'd out the tracks for the slider white pieces too. It still won't slide well at all. I bought this used a long time ago and I believe it's always had that issue. Was really hoping I could fix it this way. I don't know what else to do.
One more tip (I will update the video with this): Inside the lens there is a metal ring (or tube) which deforms. Inside it there is a cutout / track where the white slider slides. Hold the thinner side of it with a pliers, and try to bend it by lifting it up, so the outer side of that thinner side of the track bent to little bit out of the ring. So the side of the ring should be the same. When that ring deforms (by for example the lens falling to the ground), the thinner side of the ring bends a little bit inwards, so grab it with a pliers and bend it back, so the thinner side and the thicker side would be perfectly parallel. On the video I push it back on a flat surface, but if that doesn't solve the problem, then I have to bend it like I explained. It is hard to explain it in a text, but when I have this lens next time, I'll do a video about this.
That was super helpful! I dropped my lens and it wouldn't go down to 0.45 anymore. The problem is that now I have an ERR 01. Which part(s) should I check before taking it all apart again. Thanks!
Most likely ERR01 means that there is some problem with the aperture. Check it using the DOF button on your camera, and disassemble the lens to check if the aperture unit is moving freely and the cable is working. Also clean the aperture cable connector, maybe that is causing the problem.
my 50mm f1.4 went in to canon service for barrel repair. They put some lube on the 5 white plastic guides and some lube also got on the inside of the focus ring. It worked fine though. Your lens looked dry. I am not sure if these are dry leaving the factory or they were meant to be greased lightly. I just put a bit of grease in when I service it myself because that is what canon technician did.
@@CamerasLensesEtc Also I am not sure why the rim of the focusing group (the tube that moved in and out when focusing) is a tad higher opposite to the section near distance scale window. AF and imagine are find and nothing is rubbing the focusing group it seems. Checked some copies in shops, new and used. They seem to be all around flush with the front ring when parked at the infinity position.
@@CamerasLensesEtc It was not, due to FTM clutch slipping. I repacked it with a bit of special grease designed for clutch and it works again. I just noticed the plastic barrel around the front element is not sitting flush slightly (
I followed the series and fixed the mechanical issue.. tho now my camera doesn't recognise the lens.. and gives the err 01. Does the diaphragm need to be in a certain aperture so it will be recognised. and thank you so much for this series
Do you get the error 01 after taking a photo? Most likely there is some issues with the aperture, clean the cable, reconnect it, check if the aperture can be phisically be opened up and closed down (running smoothly).
Hello sir: Thank you for your video instruction. It is very helpful for me and I have subscribed your channel. I hope that you can give me some hints on my lens problem. I have a Canon EF 50mm / 1.4 lens, which is exactly same as this one in your video. I accidentally dropped it onto the ground a few months ago and then found that I couldn't use auto or manual focus anymore. About a month ago, I fixed the problem by watching your video clip and the lens resumed auto and manual focus functions. But unfortunately, it worked not smooth and sometimes the auto focus stopped working and I had to switch to the manual focus,. Once I could use manual focus, the auto focus recovered. About one week ago, the lens stops working and I can't use either auto or manual focus. I tried again to fix the problem as the last time I did by repeating your procedure, however, I failed and cannot even turn the lens manual focus barrel. The manual focus barrel seems stuck by something. I had to dissemble it again but couldn't find any problem. Could you please provide your insight from your experience? It would be very helpful for me to find the problem. Thank you in advance! Doug

Second, in video about repairing the metal ring, there is a part (at 6:00) where I'm talking about rasping the outer side of the plastic part of the lens (the part where the metal ring slides on)... try to do that, maybe that is causing the problem.
I'm really enjoying taking my 50 apart and putting it back together again. But I can't get the sliders to progress all the way to 22. they only go about a quarter of the distance. I did figure out that the white inserts have a top and a bottom edge that rides on the lower edge of the black plastic. That was a revelation. There's nothing wrong with my lower ring. No damage that I can see. I just can't get the ring that connects to the large white gear to turn the lens all the out and back again. Any thoughts?
@@CamerasLensesEtc after taking it apart and putting it back together six times, and working on that deformation at the bottom of the angled slots it final started to work. What an accomplishment! That’s to your great videos!

Thanks for this :) my 50mm 1.4f fell out of my bag today. I've had experience with the 50mm 1.8f but your video made this repair much easier :)
Great to hear that!
Definitely great video. i fixed the lens by replacing the bent ring with a new one. Thanks

Nice work and clear explanation.
What caused that ring to be deformed ?
Greetings Hans
Maybe the inner part of the lens (which comes out during focusing) is knocked into something, and that could cause that damage.

Originally the moving parts have some grease on them. My lens has also a very thin layer of that grease, but I don't put extra on it.

would you recommend lubricating some parts in the lens? mine feels a bit stiff
I would, with fine mechanics grease.

wow, that's a great video!

Which part do you mean exactly?
So you didn't show how to fix the bent focus ring.
So you didn't watch the video until the end and didn't read the description. :-)
Sadly my lens was beyond saving. Plastic gliders were broken.
You can buy those from ebay for about 13 USD.
