    Absolutely shocking the part with the eyes when they pull them apart. So unbelievable how this was considered okay only 25 years ago.

      What was pretty rough and you can tell that Pryce felt uncomfortable about the question when asked.

      It is politically correct snowflakes like you who help keep racism alive. I am asian and I’m not offended. But you guys have to pollute every innocent conversation with race! We asians always copy what the west does (coloring our hair blond, whitening our skin, copying your attire etc) Should you be offended? Pls stop.

      Nathan Crowther I’m proud enough and secure enough not to be offended by the eye pull, especially in the context it was done here. And you say “most” asians? Your snowflake mentality represents most asians? I’d love to see your basis for that. Snowflake victimhood baiter.

    Thank goodness Pryce ditched the makeup and prosthetics by the time the show got to Broadway. You all can make the Eurasian excuse all you want but the literal yellow face would have made the controversy even worse.

      yes that was a great move he did, and yes if your mother is a certain race and your father is another one, than its mixed for those getting upset at the term eurasian. his mother was asian and his father was a french man. so any white or french guy can play that role.

    • @detectivefiction3701

      He actually sounds a lot like Alastair Sim, who was a Scottish actor from the mid-twentieth century. Similar voice timbre and even a similar-sounding (to my American ear) accent.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 2 роки тому

      @@detectivefiction3701 I remember Alastair Sim. I wouldn't mistake their voices. Jonathan has a very English accent and so does Alastair Sim but Alastair rolls his Rs and his accent is from a different era. I once saw Jonathan Price in London carrying his dry cleaning home from the dry cleaners. Here are some fun clips of Alastair Sim. Alistair Sim CBE, 75 (1900-1976) UK actor - UA-cam. Oops that copy and paste didn't work.

    I still don't understand, they could find no one of Asian decent to play the engineer. That's the only part with this version I have problems with. They could've found someone.

    • @andrzej.sliwinski
      @andrzej.sliwinski 3 місяці тому

      The character is of mixed race (Vietnamese-French), so it is equally valid for an Asian actor to play him as it is for a European actor. I hope this eases your concerns.

    • @marcusvonhohenlohe
      @marcusvonhohenlohe 2 місяці тому

      No, there was talk that Cameron really wanted Jonathan for the Engineer role and no one else!
      Jon Jon Briones worked behind the scenes when the auditions were being held in Manila so why didn’t the panel even considered him for the part?
      Because, Cameron doesn’t want anyone but Jonathan to portray the part, end of argument.

    • @emilyrowley6169
      @emilyrowley6169 Місяць тому

      @andrzej.sliwinski nope. Bc in the west end version, Jonathan used tape to pull back his skin to slant his eyes. I feel like even when this show was first opened, ppl knew that was wrong and really racist. My sister is Korean, so I got skin in the game. She doesn't deserve to see that crap on stage. Enough strangers and friends, have done it since she was little. She deserves to see a person whose actual Asian playing an Asian part (even if he was suppose to be Vietnamese- fence) rather than the whitest dude ever, using tape to slant his eyes....I don't care how much the director wanted him, it's not ok.

    • @andrzej.sliwinski
      @andrzej.sliwinski Місяць тому

      @@emilyrowley6169 If you want to be so meticulous, then the actor should have been of mixed race, exactly like the character. By your logic, choosing an Asian would be equally wrong as a Caucasian.
      BTW, he didn't use any tape to slant the eyes, he wore makeup, it's explained in the video. But I guess you didn't come here for the video...
