1985 I got hired as a police officer. In the police parking lot we still had an old 70's 440 Police car sitting in the corner. They kept it for nostalgia. One day I decided to take it out on patrol. The thing was a rocket ship!...Steered like a tank and didn't stop until Tuesday.....

The thing I like about Nick is he doesn't edit it all to Kingdom come and make up the numbers. If an engine makes 370 HP, he says that. He doesn't chop the video to make it look like it made 550 HP
Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry was and still is one of my favorite car chase movies of the early 1970s.... that movie inspired me to get my 1969 Dodge Charger when I was a kid in HS. Love MOPAR power! 👍

As a metro police officer in Oklahoma in '71 we had full size Plymouths with 318 2v. No big deal, we had back up close by and lightspeed Motorolas , but the troopers had 440 polaras and 69s - & highspeed rearends - THEY LOVED EM& we're loath to give 'em up for the new Montegos OHP was going to-- end of an era 😢

@@patricknash1198 I believe it....only car that I think I had been faster in was a 1970 Buick GS455 with a highway gear of 2.93. Speedo was topped out ridiculously and believe we hit close to 150. We used to race motorcycles with that car (motorcycles were not all that fast in the early 80s...)...
I had the 1971 Plymouth Satellite 383 police interceptor complete number matching it was fast. They never came factory with the 440 interceptor in them I wishe they had .Mine had the certified speedometer as we and spot lights.

If it had a 440 interceptor in a Plymouth Satellite it was not original. The Plymouth Satellite eather had a 383,360,340,318 but never a 440 Plymouth never factory installed a 440 in the Plymouth Satellite. My Dad had the 1971 Plymouth Satellite 383 super commando Police interceptor.. it was a police car 100% matching numbers car.

Man when I was a kid i was fascinated with my dads collection of Motors manuals..especially the illustrations of the front ends of the different model years.
absolutely 💯👍!!! me too!!! my buddy had a bunch of late 60s early 70s Chilton manuals in his garage and when I had some down time I loved pouring through the many different high performance factory horsepower numbers and different bodystyle and front end changes so I could better identify the subtle changes.
I've got a 1973 Motors manual that I still use from time to time. It covers US models back to 1967 so it covered all the muscle cars of that Era. My older brother bought it in '73. I always loved that feature of what we considered the best manual out there, except for a factory vehicle specific manual. Studying this made all my friends and I able to identify all the year cars at a glance which as a kid made an impression on older car guys. I'm a '60 model BTW.
Nick in our neck of the woods our cop cars were always very fast. At one time we had Ford Galaxies with 428 Cobra Jets.
My 77 440 with an actual 7.5 to 1, ported heads, a hughes cam to make cylinder pressure, ch4b intake, and headers made 415 hp, 462 torque on the dyno. We were very surprised! And I can run 87 octane.
CH4B... one of Edelbrock's best street intakes. Ran one on a 426 wedge with 906 heads and a Crower Monarch cam in a '66 b-body that would turn a 12 flat quarter...with street tires that refused to hook.

@@NicksGarage The first car I really remember us having was a 69 or 70 New Yorker, dark blue with a white vinyl top, 4 door. We flew out to BC for Christmas to visit our grandparents and picked up the car and drove home to Ontario across the prairies...-45C all the way. We were pretty hard up financially. Had it for a few years until the reverse gear went out of the transmission...my mother refused to drive it for fear of getting parked in at the store. We would pull in to the driveway across from ours on a slight grade, and coast back into our driveway in neutral. Dad ended up selling it for scrap and we got a mid 70's Newport.
Forgot to mention it was around 1981 we got that car.
Those fins on the exhaust manifold are not for coolant that is to radiate heat up that flex tube to the air filter you see when the engine is cold they put that on the flex tube to the carb or to the air filter to help warm the engine up quicker and that’s what that is for anyway this is Jim mungai from kennerdell PA with the stage five hemi conversion have a good day

Unlimited -That’s a quote from the mechanic that built the engine in the movie , that reached in the window and keyed the ORANGE 440 to life in the police garage - and it definitely was not stock !! Play the movie and listen to the cam in that Polara - which , by the way , before it got wrecked, was eating Peter Fonda’s LUNCH in that Charger and dooring the hell out of it !!

I've never owned any low compression 440 engines. They've all been high performance. Actually for a low compression 440, it's making pretty good power. Pretty honest Engine power for a cruiser.
We had a 76, 440 highway interceptor, came with 2:56 rear gears. on the highway you could punch the gas peddle doing 95mph and it would kickdown to second and come out at 110 mph, with plenty of momentum, now thats a car that had top end !
My 1973 Dodge Polara California Highway patrol car number matching 440 police interceptor 727 transmission does 70mph in 1st gear does 118mph in second gear and 140mph plus in drive.
I have a 72 New Yorker with same blue 440 awesome ride!

I love the vintage police cars 🚔 and that one reminds me of my favorite movie The Blues Brothers 74' dodge.
One has to remember that in 1972 the advertised horsepower went from SAE gross to SAE net, that is the main reason for the low number. I loved the video as I have a very original (although a project) 1972 CHP Polara. I hope we can see the car this engine goes to one day.

I put a '76 455 out of a Bonneville into my '69 GTO back in about 1991. It went straight from the junkyard and into my car with just a Comp Cams 270HE cam, Performer Intake, Holley 800 carb and a set of Hooker headers. It had a whopping 7.6 to 1 compression ratio. With the 3.55 gear and stock Turbo 400 trans my GTO managed to knock out consistent 13.80/13.90s in the quarter. I'm sure it had horsepower similar to this low compression 440. But these awesome old engines have all that beautiful torque!!!
That’s what I miss the most about cars. Back in the late 70s early 80s, you could find a nice 2 dr American car of your choice,find a running junkyard big block from a 4 dr or wagon and build a nice car. Headers intake carb cam, junkyard electronic ignition and you were on your way. Rear ends were tougher. Not much aftermarket and was tough to find a posi/sure grip with lower gears. Do miss scrounging through the junkyard searching for parts though. Now it’s all internet and credit card swipe.
Living in the North East, don’t miss how quick stuff rusted out back then though and there wasn’t much aftermarket especially for Mopars.

I have a 1973 Dodge Polara California Highway patrol car number matching 440 police interceptor. We are the second owner Highway patrol was the first then my Dad and now me.
In 1980 at the state auction I bought an ex state police '76 Gran Fury 440. There was no indication it had ever had a cage or light bar. It had very nice deluxe cloth interior (as opposed to vinyl) with a comfy fold down arm rest, and in general had no obvious holes inside or out where equipment had been removed before the auction. Apparently it had been a supervisor or detective car during its four year service and had led a cushy life. She was in great shape with around 70k miles, and I got it for $1200. It was dark blue, and a few months later when The Blues Brothers movie came out my friends inevitably started calling it the Blues Mobile and would constantly repeat lines from the movie whenever they rode in it.
Stopping and turning were not her strong suits, but man she loved to run and made some sweet sounds especially on a rolling start kick down. By the time she upshifted we were into triple digits and climbing. That made it hard to resist putting my foot in it, which was reflected in the horrendous gas mileage. I bought her right in the middle of the '79/'80 gas crisis when panicky people were overreacting and dumping big Detroit iron for eco-boxes, so I think that's why I got her so cheaply. Anyway, she was a hoot and in three years never gave me any trouble.
Out of the 40-ish motor vehicles I've owned over the years, that 440 is probably top five on my list of vehicles I'd like to have back.

My Dad was a Connecticut state Trooper and in the early 70s they had Plymouth Fury with 440 s ,, Had the Thermoquad carb , Fast Cars , and they had that Mopar Exhaust song .
Nick that is why you are considered the King of the 440s you know how to make power and torque come out of even the lowest compression 440s that's why you're the boss man I love you holla if you hear me
In 1978 the police 440 Fury and it's Dodge counterpart were the fastest production cars for 1978 in the USA and would top out at 130 +
First moving assembly line was started at the Ford plant in Minnesota at the Saint Paul plant.
Nick, no matter what your video is about, I always have a smile on my face by the end. You're just a good man, not prideful, and you appreciate your viewers. That means a lot. I was thinking about all the muscle cars I had growing up, (several, I was hard on them) then I thought about other Mopars, not high performance, and of them my favorite was a 77 Plymouth Volare. Slant six, automatic, ps, pb, ac, four door. Buckskin brown, the perfect grocery getter.
Nick. Making 330 HP is pretty good for a low compression smog motor considering the 383 Magnum put out 335 HP from the factory.
With headers, intake and a better cam you can make 400hp-450hp all day with these low comp 440’s.
@Bill Jamison, The low-deck Mopar 'B' engines, like the 361, 383 and 400 were 3.375" stroke... Higher reving, but with less torque... The high revs helped to boost the horsepower on those engines... The 383 when equipped with factory performance items, upstaged the horsepower numbers of the 413's, but could not match the low-end torque of the 3.750" stroke 413 cid engines... Then came the 426 cid (wedge), then the 426 Hemi's (which few other engines of ANY make could match), and in 1967-the 440's were introduced... Later the 400 low-deck engines replaced the 383's, but they lost their interest with the HP enthusiasts because of smog equipment... But the 383 low-deck 'B' engines remain as very good performers...
Actually, it’s: Intake, Compression, Power and Exhaust. But it’s all the same. Keep up the great work Nick I really dig your channel.

Nick, I remember going to Cypress PD in SoCal back when I was 13yrs old because I got a ticket for not having a bicycle license sticker on my 5 speed Schwinn, it was shift change there AND, damn, I still remember 10 or 12 early 70's 440 Polara's starting up, popping AND Barking in their back yard ....Damn!
Man it sure sounds nice on those warm up revs once warmed up. Amazing how much quieter exhaust manifolds sound over headers. Especially near the engine, not just exhaust note coming out the exhaust.

nice , my buddy had an 1974 x police 440 fury and the thing hauled ass 149mph on the highway no problem car was a blast my dad had a 1969 imperial and it was fast did screaming burnouts , love the 440. i say 280hp before i watch the end
I got the 440 for my 69 charger out of a 73 town and country. That was 215 net HP rating. With 3.73 gears it made a very fun wagon.
Growing up in the early-mid 70's I was fortunate enough to drive alot of the muscle cars of the era...my buddy's dad bought a 74 Fury 3 ex NC Game warden cruiser..with a 440....that's what they ran along with the NC Highway Patrol. He had a local hotrod engine builder rebuild it "stock".
I had the pleasure of putting quite a few miles on it being he was unable to drive due to uhhhh no drivers license...dui's and other uhh numerous driving convictions. I was his uhh chauffeur from time to time....lol. No idea what the HP was but it was no speed demon. 0-40 mph you could just about outrun it on a bicycle...but from 40 mph on up...it came alive I believe due to the gearing...no idea what it was but from 40-130 mph it would pull hard. Speed odometer had 140 certified...never saw it atleast with me driving...talk about a "floating boat"...lol. We used to have a blast driving that boat around..lol.
Neutered compression made them a real dog till about 50 or 60 mph. After that thou?

A low compression 440 would still stomp a mudhole in a new 78 trans am etc.
What Nick did here is what we did in the 70s. Pop the 440 mag in your late 60s muscle? Go to the bone yard and score a 71-73 440 out of a cop package car. Throw closed chamber heads at it and send it. I was laughing when Nick stated the power here. We always guessed they made about 340hp

Low compression and high torque can be a savage motor
I have my 400 Tempest setup with compression at 9.0 ish. Just right, I burn 89 octane and it LOVES it! So smooth... Ram Air III cam, and RA exhaust manifolds with a good old quadrajet and HEI ignition...love it with a Borg warner Super T10 4 speed and 3.31 chev 12 bolt rear.

What you overlooked Nick - these police cars had the super low rear end gears - high volume cooling systems - high speed tires - and upgraded suspensions to achieve the insane requirements the police depts demanded. When I was a teenager vacationing in California during the 70's I ran out of gas on the hyw. A CHP trooper offered me a ride to the gas station in his Dodge Polara with 440. When I hopped into the front seat beside him I asked him "How fast do these cars go?". He replied "This car here will go 160 MPH ALL DAY LONG" and he floored it..........

334 gross is about 270 net and round 230whp in a 70's car at bit higher in modern car.

Nick if you check the factory figures for the low compression 440 that was offerd in the Dodge Polara police package for 1971 your right in the same ballpark power and torque wise thats with he 8.51 compression I think all cop cars can catch you they have a radio lol !

Police 440 were also required to last many many many miles.
So that's why the low output. Basically, it's a truck engine.
The officers relied on their radios and other cruisers to catch
speeders.

Had 71 440 0 decked biggest cam 4 speed crammed in a duster 6 pac man u could b going 60 mph punch it and i had a quit exhaust all u heard was that 6 pack whooooo i loved that sound that back wherl would break loose it didn't matter how fast u were going it wasnt pos trac i wish i still had it

Had a monico beautiful car my dad had a 383 put in it quit exhaust flipped top of breather over and man u could hear that carb it would go whoo whoooooo loved it the rear main started leaking so my dad parked it died in 86 i got it I wish I kepe it

Fantastic! Amazingly good numbers for a low-compression 440 engine that will give many trouble-free miles.
We remember “Hank”. He was played by actor Eugene Daniels. He undoubtedly had a rip roaring time tearing up the countryside in a few of the ‘72 Polaras. All of those ‘72-‘73 Polaras in that Movie were all former CHP Units that were recently retired & obviously not very old when they were destroyed in the movie. Back then they were all over the place after being sold off by the CHP & a lot of them met a violent fate no thanks to Hollywood. As late as 1985 we found one in a small used car lot north of the S.F.Bay area, it was green & white, as it was in service with the local Sheriffs Office. Oh how I wish we would’ve took it home at the time, as procastinating & fiddle farting around has let other things slide by as well!
330 HP gross really isn't too bad considering the compression ratio. All those engines were being tuned to run on regular gas instead of premium AND lower emissions.

Nick my 70 Camaro was the last year of high horsepower engines. Remember in 1971 all new cars had to run on the new unleaded fuel with a much lower octane. My Camaro had 200 compression and I had to run premium fuel.
I believe all new cars had
to run a lower compression to run on the unleaded fuel. My Camaro 350 was rated at
300HP and a 1971 with the same setup was 275HP . In 71 you couldn't run the leaded fuel in a new car if you want to because the fuel filler opening was smaller and would only accept the nasal from the unleaded pump. It was quite few years till they had a higher octane unleaded. I always thought I was fortunate to have a 1970 car . I had the car till 75 and the leaded premium fuel was still available.

When I was born, my Dad owned a 1973 Imperial LeBaron 4 door (440) that was sky blue. Engine probably made the same power that you said at the start of this video (250 hp/360 tq). I wouldn't be surprised if that car held some kind of record for size/weight. Sadly he got rid of it because it started backfiring badly a few years later. The straw that broke the camels back was when it backfired outside of a Tim Horton's one evening. It was so loud that people inside thought a shotgun went off lol I'm not sure what could cause backfiring that severe.
Crock. Most likely, it was an ignition issue. Tune up would have done the job.

I want to one day get my hands on a 383/440 and build it to get at least 1 hp per cube, and put it into a Dart or something similar. Because of my job I knew quite a few police officers back in the late sixties early seventies. One came to our shop with a new 74 police interceptor that he just picked up in Harrisburg that morning. He said he opened it up coming down the interstate to see what it would do. At over 150 he let off because the front end started lifting, At least in a straight line on the local interstate not many cars of that era were going to out run one. Even today it would run down most cars.

That Aussie spring water did the trick by the look if thing Nick, perhaps you should put some in that 440 as it may just increase the horsepower, joking! That motor didn't do to badly either for a low compression and slightly modified 440, even sounded pretty sweet too. Thanks Nick & George for another beaut wee video and hey stay safe you guy's.

Well at least you can run any octane you want with that one, the starter won't have much of a chore turning that one over. Put a bunch of boost to it lets see how to holds up!
I agree, I have been nudging Nick for a while now to go boosted. Plenty of room in that engine bay for a couple of snails! Should be able to get that 440 up around 600hp/770 lb/ft pretty easy! 😄
