    Since about ‘98 i had a ton of md units and discs .. got rid of it all a few years ago..... now regret it. for some reason i cant shake that nostalgia factor and i want to get back into it. Whats the deal with minidisc why do we still love them?

    5D4 has better colors, but awful auto-focus. XT-3 is too "blue" but the auto-focus is on point IMHO. I love the NH1, biggest drawback to it is the proprietary USB cable. However, now a days they make custom adapters for $10 to convert it into a USB-C device! Which is EPIC! I still use mine daily!

    • @guyprolly
      @guyprolly 8 місяців тому

      Fauxtaku here: I had no idea about the USB-C adapter. Where does one find it?
      Finally, the sensor-based AF on the 5D4 is FAR better than the X-T3's, but its continuous framerate is much lower. The X-T3 was a big upgrade over the previous generation but was so far behind the competition that a dSLR camera that came out two years before it destroys it except in continuous FPS. Of course, the X-T3 has much better video quality, but video AF is far better on the Canon.

    I just bought my first minidisc player, an mz r900. I'm not sure how good it is compared to others but it seems pretty nice.

      Sony make good MD hardware. The R900 is a late-gen with good battery life, great features, and sound, so enjoy.

    Hi, I have both the MZ-NH1 and the MZ-RH1. Although I prefer the RH1 I would recommend the NH1 for one main reason, the display. The RH1's display fades over time until it's totally blank. I don't know if this issue was ever corrected by Sony in the later batches of RH1s but it's the only serious issue I have had. I've never had anything break. The only issue I have with the NH1 is that charging is only via the dock. Sony should have at least designed an external battery pack for it.

    Great video! I have to say I agree with pretty much everything you said. I have owned an NH1 since new and have nearly all the other Hi-MD units as well, including the RH1 and this I think is the best all rounder and best recorder. The only real advantage the RH1 has is possibly the faster USB transfer speeds, but the build quality of the NH1 is really great - surprisingly sturdy and very well thought out. I actually like the multi-function joystick button and find it fairly intuitive and certainly more durable than the jog dial on the RH1 which is pretty flakey..

    • @FauxtakuLounge
      @FauxtakuLounge  3 роки тому

      Yes, bar none, the RH1 has better USB implementation, which is the strike against this unit. The joystick is, at least from a theoretical perspective, well thought out. It is too small, and combines so much navigation functionality in a small space that is also divorced form like functions such as stop, that it is cumbersome. But again, Sony interfaces went downhill quick after about 1999.The jog dial on the RH1 is retrograde.

    I have an MZ-NH1 that I used to record on and was so pleased with the results. I have some jazz gigs that were recorded with just a single stereo mic and it sounds just like Ronnie Scotts - so pleased.
    Anyway I have a USB cable that plugs into the docking port connector on the MZ-NH1.
    Is there any software still around for Win 10 that lets me access the tracks on the MD?
    Or is the best way to get them off to plug a mini jack cable into the headphone socket and into a line in connector on some recording device?

  • @freund333
    @freund333 2 роки тому

    There have been multiple Hi-MD recorder that Sony released in 2004.So what makes you think the NH1 was to first one?

    • @chrisgullett4332
      @chrisgullett4332 Рік тому

      Because it was the first HI-MD recorder. There were four devices in the original line of HI-MD devices. Two were recorders, one was a player, and one was an actual audio system that came with speakers and played CD as well, and was not portable. It was called the Sony LAM-X1, and it was a HI-MD home audio system. So technically the LAM-X1 was not a MiniDisc player, but it could play and record HI-MD disc, but it was more of a complete home system. To me the LAM-X1 looks like Sony took a PS3 and a Nintendo Gamecube and attached the Gamecube to the front of the PS3. No doubt in my mind that the PS3 was based on the LAM-X1, because it is the same shape. Nonetheless, out of the four original devices in the line, this one was the first recorder released. The first in the line was the MZ-EH1, which did not record. The MZ-EH1 is also sought after because it was the last MiniDisc player made by Sony that only had playback function and did not record. Every HI-MD device after the MZ-EH1 had recording features.

    Pretty good unit there, recently picked up an MZ-N910 myself fairly cheap locally, and the build quality likewise impressed me. Has the same annoying combined control as the MZ-NH1, but at least it's easier to use being located on the lid. Would be interesting to see how it compares sound output wise to this and other units though - Sounded fairly clean & balanced to me with only mild hiss but I'm no expert.

    • @NikiDorian
      @NikiDorian 3 роки тому

      I'm considering buying one. From what I've read people seem to fault the output on the European model for being too low. Besides, It's using a 3.7v Lipo built-in battery and a proprietary port for charging, external battery, and USB. Replacing the battery is possible, but requires soldering. On the other hand, finding a usb cable, cradle, or external battery holder may prove impossible, if not expensive.
      I'd recommend the n710 ( inexpensive and available ), n910 ( basically an n10 ), or n920 ( Japanese only model ). These have non of the n10's quirks.

    I bought mine new for like 350 euro back in the day, used it mainly for recording rehearsals of my band. But also as a walkman, it fits 8 hours of music, great stuff. Even more when you lower the bitrate. Sure, this thing is really good built quality and all that.. but I had to discover this HUGE negative/downside the hard way! When I wanted to transfer my live recordings of my band, something went wrong; the files were corrypted or something. When I wanted to try transfering again, the recordings were gone!!! They were not on disk any more! The software didn't copy the files but literally transferred them into nothingness... I almost smashed it against the floor but the guys stopped me.
    So I guess what I want to say: it can have a perfect built quality, beautiful design and all that but when you lose a set of very good recordings because the software developers were on picknick that day, all that doesn't matter any more.. I never used it again after that.
    Lucky for me that was the period when TASCAM released the DR-07 and that's the machine I still use today and probably will for a long time..
