I liked that story about your reaction to that lady leading tearing down your portfolio. You took it on the chin and vowed to get better at your craft, not a second wasted on whining or denial. Your artistic journey so far is following the road of the traditional shounen hero. I'm here for the finale. You are going to crush whatever new classes you take and, maybe more importantly, have fun doing it. Great video, Blue.

That's really kind of you to say. I really hope I can learn how to properly do perspective. I'm a big fan of Proko and have been excited for the classes. Now to find time to work on them...

I feel like time, place and delivery are key when it comes to critique. Without the proper environment and relationship with the person giving the critique, it can go bad really quickly. I love how you discussed the steps to take critique and make it constructive. Sometimes cutting words are just that, cutting words! And even though critique can be helpful I think a supportive environment is so much more encouraging. Maybe it's just that for me I am already so hard on myself so I don't need more negativity from other people haha. I know I can improve, sometimes I just need to be shown how. Sometimes what I think about failure is that you need an equal amount of support. You want to fail to learn from it, but you don't want to fail so hard that you either give up or don't have the support to keep going. This applies to even more than just art. Great advice in the video!

I couldn't agree more about the time and place. And unwanted critique is just that: not helpful, and unwanted.
I think you're onto something with having a combination of support and critique/failure. It's hard when you have negativity coming from every side, all the time. I think that's why is important...at least for me, to stay positive. If something doesn't pique my interest, I will keep quiet. But on the other hand, I like to say when I enjoy something...just knowing how most people are silent readers, and many only speak up when they're mad or don't like something.

ngl after the recent *cough* political news *cough* i've been so sad and drained from art that i had to detransition lately and a whole bunch of stuff going on,,, so this video helped alot to feel better through all these emotions. I think for myself i wanna take some online classes for art sometime when i get this whole homeless situation fixed and see how i can make my future better.
I've had a really rough past with art schools when i was in middle-highschool where i was rejected a few times and told "art wont make you money" or "waste of your time" or even "your just not good" which is absolutely crushing to hear as a CHILD. but now that im an adult not surrounded by these people i wanna expand my career and try some stuff. money isn't even my goal anymore or popularity i just wanna get better and create things with my name out there.
but overall thanks for making this video you are such an inspiration to some of us down in the gator filled swamps of comic fury

I'm glad this video is helping out. We're really in a tough spot right now...and things will probably get tougher before they get better. But...humans are social creatures. We are drawn to one another. Help each other, and don't be scared or proud to seek out help. We all get by with a little help (or a LOT of help) from our friends. My family, my friends, and heck, even THEIR families are what helped me get out bad situations. And it is friends and family, as well as respect for myself, that keep me going.
      This, too, shall pass.

    Look…
I have spent enough time at truck stops to know you don’t take advice/pep talks from someone wearing flannel.
    Jk. Good stuff.

Also… it’s really hard to explain how brutal portfolio review can be to art outsiders. It’s not something you can hand wave away as opinion because that person is usually right there in your face explaining exactly where you failed . You either grow from it or you wander off into the dark side of the arts.
