My dad owned a D8 H and had the engine overhauled , had the engine painted white with the valve covers chromed along with exhaust stack. Had a Kelly ripper on the rear modify to bury telephone cable. Clean out the tracks every day after use to be ready the next day! It was his pride and joy.
The first time I climbed up and sat in the seat of a D8 was the moment I knew what I wanted to do for a living for most of my working life. My first D8 was the 46a model which had moved on to hydraulics although the one I ran still had a pony motor for starting. I really miss no longer operating them now that I'm retired.
That old girl reminds me of my youth. I was 14 and running an old 2u D 8 . I never was a finishing operator but could hog some dirt and push some trees. I later learned about every piece of dirt moving equipment that was made. Sure does take me back. Good luck with the project whatever it is. Y"all havagudun.
Awesome story, Thanks for sharing, Isn't it fun to find something like this. not knowing what about it? And turns out to be worthy? Cool stuff. Lucky dog, Lucky dog, Sure makes your Day. Have fun, be safe. See you in the funny pages. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great to see you dragging that old classic out of the weeds. I have never ran a D8 but spent a lot of time in, on and around D7G's. There is nothing like an old non-electronic Cat dozer. Keep up the good work and let us know how it turns out. I'm interested in seeing what is making all of the smoke at the rear of the engine.
Amazing how most everyone commenting knows everything about everything. It's his D8 and they can figure things out as they go. They are not out anything but their time and it looks like they are having a blast. I am here for the entertainment and there is no lack of that. Good luck with your D8
I really appreciate what ever ya'll were using for mics/comms. There has been several videos i have found that were really interesting but ending up clicking out because you could not hear a word they were saying.
Been at that game 50yrs how did they are not take lowloader up to machine standing on tracks trying to start direction lever machine madness good to see it started but total cowboys didn't even know how to work forward / reverse
Excellent job and video, great comments about the dozer, the problems and repairs.a shout-out to the professional people you are associated with.👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Is that a rod knock I hear? Dad had an old 2U D8. I was hooked on heavy equipment ever since. He got me a cable D6 when I was 15, and that's what I learned on. Love the smell of those old dozers.
DirtMover I’m hoping it’s not a rod. I’ve read these machines have composite pistons and they are prone to separate. I won’t know until I get it apart.
@@papasoldmachinegarage2 Ahhhh,, So my ears are not as bad as I thought. Something just didn't sound quit right. I defy you to get any newer equipment to rise from the dead like these old war horses can.. A tip of the hardhat to ya' for getting it going.(and no bee stings.)
When the operator shuts it down, the turbo whistle sounds like a bomb falling from the sky. Hee-hee. I've enjoyed the series and good luck with your new addition.
That cable work reminds me of my Cat 619 C days as a youngster! Running through the boulders in the dump area and being bounced in the cab causes you to sometimes two-block and snap a cable! Then the greasy fun start, rethreading some cable!
Loved it! My cousin had an old D8 cable dozer, it could shift anything! Used to go round in a big circle, apparently one civilian and one military final drive. Different ratios.
Hi, I enjoyed your video. I had plenty to do with old D8's as a younger man, you my be well awear of this"but I will say it anyway. Never" try and ajust the winchs with the tractor running. regards Hugh.
Love that turbo sound yee haaw and the dozer is actually starting to sound good bud ..godbless .I had to subscribe I love fix it vids whith big equipment ..
I had an old D8-2U about 30 year ago. Good old machine that I bought for clearing out fence rows and building terraces. Cable blade was run off the rear winch so was a little hard to root out big locust trees....didn’t have enough hands to run 3 clutches and winch lever! Incidentally , the dry clutch will rust stuck if left engaged but will swell thicker if left disengaged...... requiring readjustment. Cat is proud of their parts...... pony motor clutch was $40-50 ! But it paid for itself.... both farms sold for 5 or 6 times more than what I paid for them. I’m not sure if Cat management has the pride and honor that it had 60 years ago.
Brings back allot of memories, I used to drive a D8 46A for my father in law. Ate allot of dirt. The 46A had a hydraulic actuator on the dozer blade VS the cable.
GARY I LEARNED TO DRIVE A D-8 WHILE I WAS IN THE ARMY (1961) IT DID NOT HAVE A BLADE ON IT, IT WAS USED TO MOVE TANKS AND TRACK VEHICLES AROUND THE POST ORDNANCE ( WE HAD 2 OF THEM ) I WAS WORKING WITH A BUNCH OF CIVILIANS AND ALL WE DID WAS MOVE VEHICLES ALL DAY LONG...THEY TAUGHT ME HOW TO START AND OPREATE IT...WELL ONE COLD ASS MORNING I GO OUT TO START ONE OF THEM, GOT THE PONY ENGINE RUNNING, ENGAGE THE PINION AND CLUTCH AND THAT LITTLE ENGINE WENIT TO SQUALING LIKE A STUCK PIG, I WENT BACK INTO THE OFFICE AND SAID SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THAT BIG ENGINE, ONE OF THE GUYS SAID, " DID YOU RELEASE THE COMPRESSION ", I SAID , SAY WHAT...I AM GUESSING THIS WAS AN 50s MODEL CAT ? ? ? I ENJOYED RUNNING THAT BIG CAT, MORE THAT DRIVING THOSE TANKS...
Fix the pony motor, get it so it will run and start reliably. Paint it, put new decals on, and double your money (or start building farm ponds and clearing fence rows). Make that little boy pick up the roots the dozer leaves behind. That was my life for the first 20 years.
Its the sump air breeder thats smokes. Frozen piston rings? Ps ether gives such an explosion (firing moment) that it killes the piston ring grooves if used too often.
In the early 70's I ran a few different versions of a D8. My fav was one that was just a little older than this one. It had a double winch on the back, one for blade lift and the other was for what ever you might need it for. I used it mostly for dragging logs around when we started a new strip mining operation. I'm not even sure if they knew what a ripper tooth was back then. One that I didn't care for at all was an old slide bar D8. Talk about old. I walked that thing out of a track on the side of a levee. Spent the rest of a very long day helping the mechanic get that track back on.
I know this is off the subject but I had to say something. I love those little boys. When I was that age, me stepfather beat me every chance he got. I see no sign of that here. They seem happy and secure. :)
If you replace the yoke for the injection pump, it has a height adjustment, and you have to set the flywheel to the cylinder your fixing to set it! The alignment marks on the rack and injection pump are to make sure each pump starts and end injection at the same delivery point. I use a old pump on a bench to test nozzles from these old machines, it is over forty six years old that I know of!! People are still bring them in to have them worked on, getting fewer and fewer because of emission standards!!!! sad!!!!
that's the best entertainment I have had for years. It shows how tough those Cat engines were. Give us more!!

Where did it end up? Hope its still going.
@@jimmyduncan7650 He sold the Cat to someone in either VT or NH . I don't recall for sure.
My Grandfather used to run a D8 like that, sure do love and miss him.
my dad ran or tried to run one of these in the 60'd...never had a electric starter you had to pull start it..real bugger to start when cold weather.
When These Are Running! These Are Great Machines! Alot of Power. and GREAT To Work With!!

Great Video. Spokesman did a great job . Just an all around great show .
Loved it
Glad you made it home with out any one getting hurt,
Reminds me of my dads D7. He was one proud man when he brought it home brand new.

Yup the keyboard commandos and the arm chair techs have to chime in about it .....
Good mechanic; excellent operator!
Good save, well done!
Man that turbo means business!
old operators never died, they just went deaf, I damn near did just watching the video..
The essential part of this is the excellent crew that know exactly what to do and when to do it.
I really appreciate what ever ya'll were using for mics/comms. There has been several videos i have found that were really interesting but ending up clicking out because you could not hear a word they were saying.
Great videos - 1 & 2.
Looking forward to #3.
Amazing this thing could start after all these years of sitting

That turbo whistle is incredible.
Luv old cable dozers, we had a 3T7 and 9U6 on the ranch, sat out 50 yrs and always started easily. Thanx for the memories!
Chain manufacturer deserves a commendation
It was🎉 fun watching you guys get it started and loaded on to the trailer good job guys
Yeah it runs hoo turbo works
Pretty nice D8. Hope you get it fixed.
Good work fellas!!! So nice to see these old beauties brought back to life!!
My grandfather on my dad's side of the family operated one of these back in the day

That was awesome! A great video! Howdy from south Florida. 🇺🇸

Wonderful, beautiful machines. Can't expect anything like this out of a T model. Let's time travel, backwards...
The guy with the blue CAT hat is rocking an amazing beard congrats man!
That's some cool stuff, big turbo sounds is better then any orchestra any time
Fuck I nearly had a heart attack when you went in between the running dozer and the bucket of the loader 😳
I thinking that is not a good place to be.
watched again : that knock, damn. But, at least she’s home and safe now, a húge plus…⁉️👊🔥💯

I agree the old girl does need some tender loving care!

Smokes like a freight train!!! I like it!!!!
Cat dozer has a major bottom problem sounds like a main or call rod bearing is Raising all kinds of hell
Hope You Get it Going !! Properly
You guys rock. Gotta love ol iron.
I like it. Hopefully you are able to do some serious repairs on that dozer, but regardless, make some more videos of other things also!
Good to see yje old Pettibone. I have a low lift one here in NZ.
My Dad mechaniced on risers 40 + years wish you could have met each other. 😁😁😁
Fix the pony motor, get it so it will run and start reliably. Paint it, put new decals on, and double your money (or start building farm ponds and clearing fence rows). Make that little boy pick up the roots the dozer leaves behind. That was my life for the first 20 years.
very cool. in for part 3.
Awesome video! Machine needs some love but man is that thing look good for it’s age! Poor turbo sounds like it’s about had it though! lol
Alright! You Got it Going And moving And All!!
The driver was amazing
They Really Do Their Job!!
Its the sump air breeder thats smokes. Frozen piston rings? Ps ether gives such an explosion (firing moment) that it killes the piston ring grooves if used too often.
great, now my computer smells like diesel exhaust
Pu7
There is worse smells in the world then diesel exhaust! A paper mill for example!
Great let’s see how you resolve the CATS PROBLEM?
15:40 I see a nice crane hidden in the background
And great saving on the crippled D8
That's serious industrial hoarding right there lol.
Has a helluva wrist pin knock
I just had to subscribe to see what the outcome of this story is going to be.
Great old 'knockin' Cat. Turbo's good,..apparently! LOL.

Terrific job!
BEAUTYFULL ....LOVE THAT CAT!!!
Funny how that "nudge" from the previous video to turn it around. Put a freaking hole in the main support arm 😂😂
Loved that turbo sound
Love watching the video
Subscribed for Part 3.
Cant wait for part 3
That old bulldozer would make some nice repair videos

Thought generally stepfathers are better than stepmothers. But, all the same so long the kids don't belong to them
Before cranking old diesel need to be ready to shutoff the air. Always keep have something to block air inlet. It's safety!
We always did. Those inlets suck air big-time.
Will there be a part three? I'd love to see this old D8 run again.

The machine has great honor.....
KAPLA !!!!
THats a mans machine. When operators were operators, not just riding along with gps and checking facebook.
I'll bet your truck has power steering, brakes, and air conditioning!
