- Watch as I present from my collection this wonderful telephone that rings on an incoming call, or you can select it via a switch inside to crank and ring the bells instead. This phone works great with a touch tone dial mounted inside for dialing out. This phone will be available on Ebay soon.
Your wife giving you crap for standing was hilarious. 100+ years later and husbands are still getting a stern talking to from their wives across it. Ha!
Awww!!! Her caring about you is so cute! WHAT A COOL restoration. I think you did a great job going over it and detailing it in a simple way. Thanks! Sincerely, a big Victorian fan.
Thank you so much for your comment. Making these videos is a difficult task. Oh but wait! There is a brand new one that features a rebuilt 1910 Kellogg PFF (Picture Frame Front) cathedral top that I am sure you will enjoy. It is in the editing stage and will also feature FOUR SKParker charcoal drawings! It is due out in mid-May! Please subscribe - and again - your positive comment means more to me than I can ever say. Thank you so much!
You know, this is cool. I like to imagine owning one of these phones in a more comfortable time when it was reasonable to expect somebody like me to own a two-story home.
Biggest issue facing us today is housing. Throwing people in low income apartment like dwellings is the answer from those that will profit off of such. As the quantity of people grow who don't have adequate housing so will social unrest. I feel your pain. I too do not own a home. Thanks for watching.
I used to restore these phones with the old 500 series rotary dial and the old 2500 series DTMF pads for a Guy out of Forney Texas.Wilkerson and Marvin Weaver was my contacts name.I am from Denison Texas. This Is similar to one of my remod's?I fixed the reverse polarity problem with a simple bridge rectifier.
I understand Steve but I was too cheap to throw more money and time at it. You can find an equivalent polarity guard online, but they want to soak you $9.50 to get it in 14 days (and the cost higher if shipped for fast delivery). Sorry, but my idea to simply flip tip and ring solved the problem fast. Thanks for watching!
@@TelcoSteve In the day I just bought a one dollar bridge rectifier.I understand that these parts have to be ordered now, sadly no Radio Shack nowadays.Enjoyed the video and the phone.
@@stevearmstrong4561 Thanks for watching Steve!
@@stevearmstrong4561 Hey I show a
KBP202G from Digi Key IS that what you used ? 20V? + ~ ~ - Correct?
@@TelcoSteve I used a common 50v rectifier because it could survive the 48 volts dc line voltage and the 90 volt ring voltage. On my own phones I hardly ever a bridge rectifier because I aligned the tip and ring polarity. For my costumers my rectifier of choice is the kbpc 5010.Sometimes I just build a rectifier out of any line diodes in a square configuration.Yes.the kbp202g would work nicely.
Incredible Mr. Steve!! Very exciting indeed! Also, it must be nice to have someone concerned about you getting off of your feet. I don't have such reminders. My reminders, all come in the form of excruciating pain, and a fall... I'm hardheaded when my body starts with the signals too!
It adds flavor to an otherwise mundane video. Thank you for watching and take care.
Thanks. I'm working on restoring an old Stromberg Carlson wall phone, and this helps a little.
There will be a Stromberg Carlson single box circa 1925 coming soon from my workbench efforts and jobs lined up. The absolute hardest thing is IF the original internal receiver is damaged and a replacement receiver (newer) is in the plan - the fit in the space of the shell is too small. With some cutting of the brass insert that has the threads that secure the cap, you can fit a low profile receiver element out of a W.E. Trimline (that was smaller in height than the G series handsets). Other than that, please note, S.C. used pot metal alloy in place of what might be thought is brass. The Magneto that has the bare metal plate with SC is for wall phones and subsets that were after 1920. Typically finding a four or five bar with that groovy brass font work on the magneto front plate can be a struggle as a lot of nameplate scalpers loved removing them. Let's face it, these S.C.s are super nice, but an all-out challenge for the backyard garage builder. Good luck Thomas, and thanks for watching, and as they all say, "Please Subscribe to my videos."
Beautiful
Thank you so much for the positive comment.
Phone HAS BEEN SOLD. If you are interested in acquiring a phone that will function like this one - please leave me a comment and we can go from there.
+Telco Steve Hey Steve. I have an old Columbia Electric Wall Telephone that belonged to my great grandmother in Indiana. If it's ok, I would like to get some suggestions on refurbishing it. How do I contact you directly?
+David Armstrong
Hi Columbia Electric. That is a tough one. It could be that this model was made but honestly I can't find a reference to it in my documentation. Send me some pics of this and we can go from there. Email is telcosteve@gmail.com
Write to me via email at end of video. U.S. only and your payment must be done via PayPal
It has dial numbers inside the Wall Telephone on 2:10.
Yep. It's called a Touch Tone Dial. Thanks for watching
I like this ringing part on 0:33.
I have a complete one of those they're all just slightly different but one thing is for sure that coil at the top is the same as my coil so is the bar magnet generator and the rest is just got slight differences I'm assuming mine is a Kellogg the schematic is still in the door
Hi Steve....I just got my late grandparents Northern Telecom (I'm in Canada) wall phone that I used as a kid in the early 1960s when I visited them in rural Saskatchewan. My Dad varnished it about 30 years ago. I'm stripping it down to the bare wood. What kind of stain did you use on the phone in this UA-cam video. Once I restore it I'dlike to make it into a working phone. Great video. Thanks!!
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. I believe that this was stained with Watco "Fruitwood." You might want to try and "blend" Fruitwood with another stain that is somewhat on the "brown hue." Recently I did one that I mixed several colors to achieve an original stain look from references to several I saw when I first started with enjoying antique telephones. So try a go with some stains like on the back panel. Color stains are really a personal choice, but remember, don't go too crazy with the one that "looks pretty." I now look up pictures of old wood wall phones and see how they look color-wise. The ones that are a really light stain that look like a kitchen cabinet door from a log cabin somewhere drive me nuts. People think it should "show the oak" grain. So again, it becomes a personal thing but I would research photos of what is for sale and come to happy medium in the choice. Peace!
@@TelcoSteve Thanks very much Steve for the reply and information!
Great job
Amazing!!
Interesting to see the American equivalent to the British ones I restore :-)
I wasn't aware there was a difference
Awesome! Eu não sabia para quê servia aquele magneto, agora sei! I'm happy! Thanks!!! =)
Você é muito bem-vindo. Obrigado por assistir!
Thank you for watching!
😊😊
very cool, i have one and modified it even more extream. Will send you pictures or a video if you want.
Please do. Love to see it. Thanks for watching aand please subscribe!
Nice phone, I just picked up a S.H. Couch No.42 intercom. I'm planning on making it still as an intercom and also a phone. I go to a vintage computer show every year and someone brings and entire phone system server. Its not click and bang, but its still impressive.
I also wanted to ask you if you've ever heard of a battery replacement box? I pulled it out of my high school before it got demolished, its from 1932.
Nice. Thanks for watching.
Do you have a videos on how to make the phone like this? Like a step by step?
Also it would be cool if you could program it so when you turn the knob a certain amount of times it calls someone programed in, like speed dial!!!
I actually might be creating a book that dives into step-by-step rebuilds. Stay tuned. The concept of auto dial on a magneto crank of a 360 degree cycle input equaling 60 volt pulse output to a digital signal processor "DSP" might involve higher electrical and computer programming than my pee-picking-brain can handle. Take some electrical theory classes and one day you might be the one to accomplish such a detailed task. Thanks for watching!
So this is working the way it was made all original or did you add something more modern to it to make it work
See the video presentation -----Thanks for watching.
I have a similar kellogg phone with small holes in the four corners. Are these for wall mounting? It’s quite heavy
Cool
Thanks!
Thought it was Hank Jr. in the thumbnail.
Oh darn. Sorry but it was Bud Jr.
How can I wire two old phones together one in my house the other in a detached garage so that someone in the house can call me out there . I have a Kellogg wall phone with all the stuff I think . And another brand that has a separate box and a andy griffith style two hand phone
Hi guy. Thanks for watching/ First you need to have lightning arrestors (sorry but I think it spelled correctly) carbon and coil A.K.A. FUSES attached to a wire (dropwire) that leads from the house to the detached garage. You must look up National Electric Code and building and safety code for wire run clearance - ground to lead. If you have a conduit from your house to the detached garage, then good. Next the phones need to wired to use the network coil if they have them or a newer network component so you can talk on them.
Steve I have a phone like this one that was converted years ago with internal rotary dial. I don't have a landline but I am interested in making the bells ring. I have it hanging on my wall and want it to ring the bells. Can you help me with that? I would be thankful if you could help.
This requires adapting the magneto. Send me a pic of the phone internally so I can see what there is. We can work out a charge for step by step. Say $30.00 Paypal?

This is probably 1880s phone
Hi. No it is not. It is around 1918 -1928 The flat top wood wall phones were not built in the 1880s. Thanks for watching
I have an old wall phone, want it restored. How can I contact you?
Got an old Kellogg wall phone circa 1917... would love to learn to make it ring and make it work..... help or ideas?
Thanks for watching Paul. There are many obstacles to overcome in doing this. The ringer coils must be tested for continuity and must be larger than 1000 Ohms. This is due to REN issues of telephones connected to a landline. Then it gets really deep. Why not let me do it for you and save yourself the headache and hassle?
@@TelcoSteve do you still make these work for people? How much to get mine converted into a useable phone?
@@cannacast4204 I would have to have pictures front back top bottom and inside to begin to estimate. Send them to telcosteve@gmail.com Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
My mother had an old crank phone that was a piece of junk. It didn't have the "nose" mouthpiece and single ear piece...it had a one piece receiver. Didn't even look cool. You could only answer and you could barely hear on it if you did. I would come home from being somewhere and mom would say "somebody called for you when you were out." I would say "who was it". She would say " I don't know.....I was on the old phone and I couldn't hear them." God I hated that thing.
That's because I was not there to correct the problem. All my phones are tested before they are shipped, and I have not had one negative remark. I also have 100% feedback A+ rating on my ebay account. People that buy form me LOVE their phones.
I already have an old phone but would be interested in your adaptation. Could you send me the instructions on how you did it.
Sorry but I only do the dual ring capability on these phones that I sell. I could adapt yours if you are interested. Email me for pricing.
I guess if your neighbours had the same phone then you could call them when you turn the handle if its set to ring them by default and I guess also free who would eavesdrop or make the connection you are using outdated technology
I'm sorry, but what are you asking? With a shared line across multiple parties, BACK IN 1910 - you cranked the handle to ring the Operator. Back in 1910 it was not considered "outdated technology," but you are right. People listened in on the call.
Would it ring and have a dial tone if it wasn't modified?
Dial Tone comes from a Central Office "Tone Generator" Back in 1910 few (if any) existed. Talk battery was generated from what they called "Local Battery." The wood box sets all had spaces where dry cell batteries were installed to provide that. Now...common battery or now known as "landline service for POTS" provides talk battery from a central office point. However, that is quickly changing. See how the phone companies are returning to the customer supplying the ac voltage for the ringer and the talk battery? So, the other part of your question is answered with... Yes, if the ringer is intact and the magneto is good - then it can be optioned to ring when you turn the handle. I retrofit these - paying close attention to having them appear unaltered. Cost is $620.00 plus shipping to USA ONLY. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe.

So do these phones all have Dials. Or did you put it in there.
Some day people are going to do this with a iphone x
Not to be too picky. but 1. It would be "an" iphone X 2. I sincerely doubt that an Iphone rings on 32hz at 60 - 90 Volts AC. Thanks for watching!
