- Hey everyone! In today's video I'm going to show you how to make homemade laundry detergent. It costs around $35 and lasts for a whole year!! It's so easy to make too! Let's do this!
Homemade Laundry Detergent:
3 (5 oz.) bars Fels-Naptha laundry bar
13 cups (110 oz.) box of Oxi clean stain remover
1 (76 oz.) box of Borax
2 cups baking soda
1 (55 oz.) box Washing Soda
OPTIONAL:
1-2 bottles Purex Crystals in wash fragrance (in your scent of choice) I love the Lavender scent
Break down bars of Fels-Naptha. Pieces need to be small enough to dissolve in the washing machine. Grate the bars then put in the food processor or blender until it resembles sand-like texture. Combine all the ingredients in a garbage bag. Tie the bag, then place into another garbage bag and tie tight. Mix, mix, mix!!
Transfer to a bucket or glass 2 gallon jar.
HOW MUCH TO USE: Regular load=2 TBSP.
Large load=2 1/2 TBSP.
Small load=1 1/2 TBSP.
Pour right into the washer, not the dispenser. Safe for HE washers!

I also use white vinegar for my rinse cycle. No more fabric softener! Better for your clothes. It does not leave a vinegar smell.
You can't always use vinegar in the rinse cycle. Only once in a while.
How much white vinegar do you use and do you put it in the fabric softener dispenser? Thank you!
You need to have a bar soap to add. If its to difficult to find the Felds Naptha bars, as I did, you can use *regular Ivory bars, Linda bars by Aurora, Sunlight detergent bars, plus you'll find lots of options online. You can find a beautiful jar at a second hand store. I found a 1/2 gallon antique green glass pickle jar at a yard sale for $5, and I love it! It looks great, and keeps the laundry detergent dry or from clumping. I made a double batch of this during Covid..and am still using it!
Why do you need a bar of soap?
She used a bar of soap. She started with that
I’ve been making this exact recipe for over 10 years. Now my adult children ask to make this for their homes. In fact, we just had a soap party last night🥳
Great instructions and great recipe. Question though, do have soft water or hard water?
Thank you! We have soft water.
Thank you so mych much for this!! Miss your videos!
I use Zote flake
I made this a it is great
I’m so glad you like it! Thanks for letting me know. ♥️
i just want to make it but its expensive the ingredients . Anyone pls tell me where to buy the ingredients cheaper ?
👍🏻👏🏻👏🏽👏🏼
Can I make this without borax?
Hi sheri! I love this and am going to try it! Should be better for the environment too!
♥️♥️♥️
Yikes. Do you see how diluted it is? Yikes!
how is it diluted ? @@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
No need for the baking soda, oxy clean pure crystals. All you need is a laundry soap bar washing soda and borax as a water softener. Rinse cycle white distilled vinegar
👍💖🎀
Did you used 1 ot 3 bars of fels-naptha
I used 3 bars of fels-naptha. 😊
@@SheriHemingwaydoes this work well in high efficiency machines?
@@333Lovelylaura yes, I have a HE machine. Just make sure you grate it into very small pieces.

I absolutely love anything that is DIY and recyclable as well as a way to save on money and time. 😍😃😍😃
But this DIY home laundry dry detergent is not one of them.
I tried this for 6 months with two different types of laundry bar soaps.🤔😯
My daughter was quite allergic to the bars of laundry soaps. 😢
Also this dry laundry recipe did not fully dissolve in my washing machine leaving clumps of it on my clothing.
And made my clothing feel and smell badly. 😠😯
Also my machine kept on breaking down did not know why it was doing that during the time I was using this type of laundry detergent.
I soon found out that because it was not fully dissolving it was clogging everything even though I was using some white vinegar as a fabric softener .
I soon found out that these dry ingredients are used to strip your laundry and should not be used to wash your laundry each and every day.
They strip the color from your clothing after will.😮
It causes the elastic bands in your clothing to degrade after a will.😫
It causes the band around your machines barrel to degrad which causes your washing machine not to spin out the water .
Also too much vinegar placed in your washing machine can cause damage as well.
All of these ingredients are not good for your washing machine.
It is cheaper and easier to buy a name brand laundry detergent.😍
1 tablespoon for small loads and 2 tablespoon for bigger loads of laundry only.
You can still use white vinegar with some pure essential oil as your fabric softener but only two tablespoons to 4 tablespoons only.
Not a cup of white vinegar pur load.
White vinegar strips the detergent out of your clothing but it also strips your machine and by stripping too much of your machine can cause damage.
Also never use store-bought fabric softener or fabric beads or fabric softener sheets they have a lot of harmful chemicals which builds up in your machine as well as on your clothing and is the many times it is the cause of your washing machine and dryer breaking.😮😢
Look up stripping your clothing from build up detergent and you will see the same ingredients that is shown in this DIY laundry detergent is the same ingredient.
That makes no sense that the same ingredients is for stripping your laundry detergent from your clothing as well as use it as regular laundry detergent.
So, basically, you failed to use warm/hot water during your wash, and you don't ever use your tub clean cycle to maintain your washing machine. There are countless DIY laundry detergent recipes. This one seems quite potent, but you may benefit from a milder, cold-water-appropriate liquid recipe. Many of these homemade concoctions may be better used in the soak cycle first, then proceed to wash, extra rinse…for best results.
@@wyzemann
This one is VERY diluted. 0.029 oz of soap/load. See my comment sbout the math. It’s worthless.
@@wyzemann
This isn’t potent. It’s very dilute. Like washing with plain water. Only 0.029 oz of soap/load. A paper clip weighs 0.050 oz.
Is this non toxic?
Nope.
Look at my original comment for a alternative way to make it
The only thing bad about these homemade laundry soaps is that they can eventually cause a lot of residue buildup in your machine which can cause issues down the road.
Shrinkflation at its finest. This video is a year old and I got that same “76 oz” box of borax. Got it home and found out it was only 65 oz. 😭
Thank you so much, I just found your channel!! God bless 🙏🙋🏻🌈🌈
Can’t find the jar! eeeek! Did you buy a food processor just for making soap? It seems like it’d be hard to clean the soapy smell out for making your regular food. And I heard it’s bad for front loaders with hard water, anyone have any problems?
I made this recipe a couple years ago and it was too harsh. I couldn't wear undies that were washed in it, burned me up!
This is the second time of making my laundry detergent! I love the way it softens my water thus making cleaner clothes! Thank you for sharing!
Yay! That makes me so happy! I’m glad you like it!! Thank you!! 🥰
The Fels Naptha laundry bars are so expensive. At least they are expensive on Amazon.
They are like $2 at Walmart, and they're the best stain remover ever.
Made the detergent love it
Gonna try this. Thanks for sharing.
0.029 oz soap/load. Weight of paper clip: 0.050 oz. Like washing with plain water.
I use a Tblsp of detergent. Works great.

Lol. Confirmation bias. Whether or not you understand or believe them, science and grade school arithmetic are always right.
@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt I go by the results I obtained
@@WhateverHappenedToHer0331
Try plain water. Save time, effort and $. Results will be comparable.
I've made this for years. I love it.
Like washing with plain water.
What does the baking soda do is it needed
Are you using a He washer
Yes 😊
No modern washer is designed to use soap.
Thank you so much!🎉❤
Won't the soap clog the pipes?
It’s very diluted and useless.
Soap will in time ruin your washer and clothes become dingy..
I'm so making this!!
Yes! Let me know if you like it! ♥️
I made it with Unstopables. Love the smell. Everything gets clean. Making another batch now. Thanks.
I’m so glad you made it and like it! ♥️
Heavy and extra dirty like jeans/work close about 1/4 cup. Lighter fabric about 1/8 cup. It really doesn't take much. We are so used to using amounts on commercial laundry boxes. I had a washer repair tell me years ago not to use as much as box said. I said why do say to use that much...he said to sell washing powder..lol. I make a batch of my powder about once a year for two people.
I have used this same recipe for years. It’s great!!!
I have made this for many years. For the two of us it actually lasts over two years.
2 years!! That’s awesome!! ♥️
You’ve been washing with diluted soapy water that amounts to using plain water. The really sad part is that you still don’t understand that.
so you're saying diluted soapy water is the same as water? you probably smell like cheese.
@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
just went from a healthy alternative to adding the beads....have you read the ingredients?
Absolutely love this option! I have sensitive skin and using this has made my life easier. Most beautiful scent I have ever smelled and it lasts soooo long. Have been struggling with these in store brands because nothing keeps the smell. I also noticed stains that were on my sons clothes from months/ week prior came out within one wash! I've had it for about a month and still a big jar full.
I make something similar. Use Zote flakes, washing soda, and borax...cleans well...
I’ve seen the zote soap but have never tried it. I’ll have to try it sometime! I feel like the homemade laundry soap cleans so much better! ♥️
@@SheriHemingway I have been using this for two years and am very pleased. I used to grate the bar Zote but now I cheat and use the flakes..it has a fresh clean smell
The zote bar has flakes?! That is such a time saver! Now I need to try it!! That's so great! Thanks for telling me!
@@SheriHemingway it comes flaked in boxes or there is a white or pink bar. I use 1 1/2 boxes of flaked Zote, I box of washing soda and one box of borax. That is it. No problems with my laundry. I mix about 1/3 of each then repeat til all incorporated. Use an old popcorn can..can also shake the mix in it.
That is exactly how I make mine. I love it.
Why would you use all those toxic ingredients to make it might as well buy it . Use washing soda (you can make it by putting baking soda in the oven for 400 degrees for about a hour or until it’s grainy and not glossy) and grated Kurt’s coconut bar soap and put essential oils for fragrance for a non toxic cheap detergent
Would like to know if you use the bead type freshener if you have to wash clothes in warm water or if you can wash in cold water.
I makes no difference because it’s so diluted that it’s comparable to washing with plain water.
I do not use anything else and clothes have a light fresh smell. I wash in cold water. I store my big batch of mixture in a tin can that originally was a can containing popcorn from a Christmas gift. I fill a plastic container with cleaning mix from the tin to keep in laundry area. I saved a plastic cup from a powdered drink mix and keep in the container to measure mix. Been using this mix for about 3 years. The Zote soap has a light scent.
Looks like a great idea!
Saves us so much money! 😊
Lousy idea. No mystery here. Think. Diluted. Waste of $ and time. Like washing with plain water.
Which detergent company do you work for? You sure took a lot of time to make a lot of comments to bad mouth this diy. @@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
So i just mixed all this together, i forgot to buy the oxiclean . And i make the fels bar too fine in the processor..now my question is ..dont see bubbles or suds in my wash ...am i suppose to.? Or should i
It’s VERY VERY diluted. Like plain water. Waste of $.
I have a top load that does not use much water. I am suprised the clothes get clean, but they do. Afraid this detergent wont dissolve enough, anyone have that problem ?? Maybe a homemade liquid?
No modern washer is designed to use soap.
Do you think that this recipe would work just as well without the Fels Naptha bars? With everything else that is in this recipe I’m just wondering how much this ingredient actually contributes to the results
The felsNaptha is your stain remover and degreaser. That’s why the amount is smaller than the others.
You need a surfactant. That’s what FN is. Chemistry.
For $35 I can buy in the grocery store 2 BIG boxes of Gain that will last for a year and I don't have to do anything. This is not exactly savings here!
You're saving your skin, your environment, and from chemicals and having to use extra supplies. So $35 for laundry soap, then colour safe leach, or chlorine bleach, and fabric softener..as opposed to ONE product. Use a spray bottle to spray onto your wet clothes in the dryer, then dry them for pennies, making them static free. So on top of your $35, how much more do you spend, and on how many more products with extra and harmful chemicals?
Look at all the toxic chemicals in Gain, Tide, etc. This is much better (minus the toxic fragrance beads).
Where can you find that?! At that price?
At my grocery store in Texas, although since then a box is $19.99, so now its $40 for two big boxes. @@Ann-qh3kb
@@Ann-qh3kbCostco/Sam's would be my guess
