- The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 38
At the heart of the "Woke" (Critical Social Justice) movement is the abuse of language, which is perpetrated in order to abuse power. Therefore, at the heart of the New Discourses project is a Critical Social Justice Encyclopedia, Translations from the Wokish (newdiscourses.com/translation..., that documents these abuses and helps to decode them so that everyday people won't be taken in by them. One of the projects taken up by James Lindsay and the New Discourses team with that Encyclopedia is to document the theoretical underpinnings of the Critical Social Justice ideology so that people can understand not just the words but also why they are given the particular distorted meanings they have.
In line with that, and because it is the heart of the "Woke" (Critical Social Justice) movement is the concept of Neo-Marxism, which is the school of thought brought to the world by (communist) people like György Lukács, Antonio Gramsci (newdiscourses.com/2021/01/ant..., Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse (newdiscourses.com/2021/01/how..., and Angela Davis. It's almost impossible to understand the Woke ideology without understanding this precursor. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, join James Lindsay as he reads through and adds nuance and detail to the relevant "neo-Marxism" entry (newdiscourses.com/tftw-neo-ma...) in his Critical Social Justice Encyclopedia so that you can better understand where Wokeness comes from and how it thinks and operates.

Marx: Literally wrong about everything
Marxists: Lets keep trying until this shit works.
There’s an actually possible chance that Marx gave up on writing the third volume of Kapital, because his whole philosophy was already being disproved. Thomas Sowell mentions this possibility I believe

Thank you for doing this work. You are giving people the tools to answer the current madness. The simple insight that Marcuse proposed joining Freud and Marx and made sexual repression a tool and image of political repression is a gold nugget to see the relationship between Marxism and the sexual/lgbt liberation movement.
Post-modern philosophy was born out of anti-Marxism. It was Trotskyists from the World Socialist Website who debunked the New York Times' 1619 Project.

Unfortunately once they touch such poison they get venom in their brains thereafter. This is why they always target the young and stupid so they can apply their wasted energy towards revolution.
Best you can do is teach them why it cant work and why its deceptive. The US is a great example as how it wont work and cant work when the US is a country that isnt supposed to be tribal, because when it does, the union falls.
Two + years later. Are you still teaching high school Sociology? Are you forced to teach ideas you know to be fallacious? Or do you have the latitude to teach what you believe to be true?

I was planning on taking a scheduled break from media/internet for mental focus in preparation for school….then I stumbled upon this channel, and now I’m hooked. This is the narrative I’ve been looking for amidst all this social “justice” taking place. Truly, a breath of fresh air.
leftism:
Otherwise known as “progressivism” and even more inaccurately as “liberalism”, leftism is a term originating from the French Revolution of 1789, in reference to the political faction that opposed the French (so-called) king. However, the term is currently used in common discourse to describe those criminals who actively support (or at least tacitly condone) a host of OBJECTIVELY-WICKED ideologies and practices that contravene dharma, such as non-monarchical governances and corrupt economic systems (particularly socialism, communism, fascism, and liberal democracies), egalitarianism, feminism, perverse sexuality (especially homosexuality, bestiality, and transvestism), multiculturalism, and the illegitimate abortion of innocent, defenceless, unborn children. Cf. “dharma”.
In the past decade or two (of this treatise being composed), the mass media, especially the motion picture industry and television production companies, has been aggressively promoting all the above CRIMINAL ideologies and practices, helping to expedite the destruction of human civilization. Recently, large corporations have jumped on the leftist bandwagon (so to speak), in order to profit.
As explicated in Chapter 11 of this “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity”, the state of being of any particular human (or any other animal, for that matter) is due entirely to his or her genetic sequencing and his or her conditioning. Therefore, the explosion of the leftist/liberal mentality in recent decades, particularly in Western countries, has been caused by poor breeding strategies overtaking the more conservative tradition of mate-selection of previous centuries (and indeed, millennia). In other words, due to the fact that criminal behaviour (especially the deviant sexual acts mentioned above) has become increasingly more tolerated, condoned, and even GLORIFIED in most countries, there has been a proliferation of corrupt genetic codes within the wider human population.
According to genealogists, for (almost) the entire history of humanity, most women have successfully reproduced, whilst a far far smaller percentage of males have bequeathed their genetic sequence to proceeding generations. Due to the gradual phasing-out of polygamous marriages in even the most conservative societies, as well as the eradication of poverty in most every country, more and more men (as well as women) have been producing offspring. Thus, the human genome has rapidly become adulterated by inferior genetic material (that is, DNA from truly pathetic, uxorious beta-males, bisexuals, and even homosexual couples who engage surrogate mothers or sperm donors in order to conceive children - something of a rare occurrence in previous centuries/millennia).
For centuries, breeders of elite animals such as horses, cattle, and dogs, have known that selecting the finest examples of a breed of animal will result in offspring with desirable characteristics. For example, present day thoroughbred horses boast a pedigree of the best-available horses from the seventeenth century. Such breeders are willing to pay enormous sums of money merely to hire the fastest stallions on earth in order for them to mate with their mares. In the case of we humans, women have traditionally chosen the most competent and masculine men with whom to bear children, and in general, have totally eschewed those males who displayed effeminate traits, and who showed themselves incapable of properly supporting a nuclear family. Unfortunately, due to rapid moral decay over the past few decades, Western women have become extremely sexually promiscuous, resulting in a multiplication of unwanted progeny (and, of course, an escalation of abortions). Boys born to single mothers often lack proper male roles models and invariably become feminized, unable (and often unwilling) to continue a strong lineage of progenitors. The solution to this problem is simply to ensure that society adheres to the principles of DHARMA (see the Glossary definition of that term, as well as Chapter 12).
Unsurprisingly, the majority of leftists find it difficult to accept the fact that their criminal mentality is largely inherited (and of course, they are unwilling to acknowledge the blatantly-obvious fact that their ideologies and practices are intrinsically sinful, wicked, evil and immoral in the first place!). It seems the consensus amongst leftist “intellectuals” is that every human mental trait is due entirely to one’s environmental conditioning and social milieu, rather than as a consequence of BOTH one’s genetic sequence and one’s life-long conditioning - a fundamentally-flawed assertion that cannot be scientifically supported. I would not be surprised if the typical leftist would believe that, if the parents of the twentieth century communist tyrant, Joseph Stalin, and the parents of the Divine Incarnation, Lord Jesus Christ, had somehow crossed the time barrier, and exchanged their baby boys shortly after their birth, that Stalin would have grown to become a Prophet for God, whilst Christ would have become a murderous, left-wing dictator!
This term was very reluctantly used in the chapter on feminism. I say “reluctantly” because it is unlikely that the term will perdure for many decades longer. This is simple deductive logic, since, as clearly demonstrated in certain chapters in “F.I.S.H”, human civilization cannot survive with such leftist practices and ideologies in place. If you happen to be reading this Holy Scripture a century or more after its conception, you will probably be residing in a nation (as opposed to a country) ruled by a monarch, following the implosion of post-modern, decadent societies. So, either the term “leftism” will eventually become redundant and obsolete, or else, human civilization will devolve into a decadent, diseased state of existence similar to that of the prehistoric era, when the peoples of the world resided in caves or shacks, subsisting on whatever food can be sourced from the surrounding bushland. I trust that you who are reading these wise words will endeavour to influence your social circles to adhere to right-leaning ideologies and practices, such as (above all) monarchical governance, an entirely free-market economy, sexual purity, veganism, and all other virtuous principles.
Fear not, for God is with you!
P.S. As a general rule, it seems (at least anecdotally) that the farther left-leaning is a person, the more physically (and of course, psychologically) UGLY is that person. Unfortunately, that does not seem to prevent leftists from propagating their mutant genes.🤡
N.B. In order to clarify the notion of inheritability, it is not being claimed that an adharmic (far-left) couple will INVARIABLY produce leftist children, but that it is more PROBABLE that they will do so, considering their genetic sequence and the environmental conditioning they are bound to impart to their children, just as two parents with a certain physiological disorder are more likely to generate offspring with that specific disease. In this regards, it is recommended to study introductory texts on epigenetics. 🧬
In my particular case, I was raised by a staunch communist, and so was indoctrinated to believe that communism was the best course of action for a just society. Indeed, as a teenager, I even volunteered in the election campaign of a socialist politician, who eventually became the Premiere of the state of Western Australia. However, after studying dharma, I came to learn that I was misled by my father in this regard, and that the only system of governance that is dharmic (legitimate) is a divinely-sanctioned monarchy.

For people who want to find it, wikipedia didn't remove the cultural marxism page. It replaced it with a page on "marxist cultural analysis" which explicitly describes it as cultural marxism, while making that phrase redirect to a page on the "cultural marxism conspiracy theory". This is not a defense of Wikipedia at all. It clearly shows a hand at play that should not be there. Especially when you compare the page on marxist cultural analysis with the archived page on cultural marxism. But at least, the page still exists, and still contains soft (accurate) versions of the claims attributed to the conspiracy theory. It was just renamed and tucked away.

Since CRT contains so many hijacked meanings of words what a great place to edit history as they define it. Political bias is rampant in more current events : just read section on 1/6 Insurrection. I wonder if the “woke” version of the Rittenhouse events & Trial have arrived yet?
This is the education I’ve been waiting for! Knowing something is not right and looking everywhere to find why! Clearly and insightfully explained, Thank you! This is brilliant ❤
i have been super worried for a long time about CRT but normal people seem not to care or even know.
Their kids know.
Fortunately, more and more people are becoming aware, and alarmed...
It's interesting how the most extreme radical movements of both the right and the left ended up in the same place. Group identity politics and genocide. Once you arrive here, you are all the same, regardless of how you arrived.
Also interesting how that lesson hasn't been learned- by all means, run away from dangerous ideas. But don't run so far away that you also run past the land of reason, into the land of chaos where the worst extremes of all ideas have always lived together in horrific harmony.
The scale of right and left should be imagined as a cirlce rather than a line, because it's impossible to distance yourself from the chaos of the "other" by running as far as you can in either direction. Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions of human kind is the idea that these extreme states are 2 seperate places, at the farthest possible distance from each other, when in fact, they have always been the same place.
This idea is known as 'horseshoe theory' go far enough in either direction and you end up in the same place.
(Irrespective to the video/discussion, only to your comment in possible respect to it.) [ pre-public-premier ]
Circle is not a bad idea, that being the chaotic circle a pendulum would swing within. Being at the circle would be any various means of being "authoritarian." It's of my opinion left/right is nonsense, not only from it being arbitrary, but I do not believe that even the line of "economics" that it is conformed to is correct or sensible either. The both are themselves overly simplified to linear opposition. I wonder if that is connected to some psychology that people in general will take up and easily accept things in that manner, thus getting used often for convincing/coercion...
Such linear thinking would also inhibit the "center," with it being as it is viewed "the middle" between two extremes rather than the complex balance between many.
Suggesting ones left and ones right also kinda aids both in it gets other people to also attribute those traits and groups to the sides. Not overly, but normal people don't really talk in qualifiers and such detail so it's quite easily twisted and that too is probably some thing of casual acceptance from the lexicon constantly used.
The saying "extreme situations call for extreme measures" comes to mind. I'm unsure that is a lesson that can really be truly "learned." You'll have people who just art or do believe things, people that end up there though struggle and fighting, and those convinced or manipulated there. It seems simple, but when you consider what you suggested of a circle, I imagine it is very hard to know you're off balance till long after you're at the circle and you may need some other vector to allow you to notice. There's also the view of "destroying evil" which is likely one of the greater alluring paths out to that circle - call it "riding the pendulum." That's a seemingly noble goal, but one implausible to actually discern. Some easier than others, but most of those don't call for the simplistic of being decimated.
Running may not be the best analogy for every case, and even when so, people probably are likely choose more defensive places including opposing offense if its one of or is the only one that know of. I'm unsure of that though, someone with a better idea of people. I'm thinking this on the idea that just "running away" leaves you in a seeming state of being alone.
There's also the issues that a lot of peoples "running away" is just appeasement instead of actually "running" as even getting away in the view of chaos is opposition.
An addendum since using my version of an idea of a pendulum. Imagine the fulcrum and the cone line area that a pendulum sweeps out. This definitely needs more consideration, but the circle may be the lowest extreme chaos while people that have some manner of balance but have command or influence of some section of the circle could be considered up the side of the cone (up the pendulum). As you get to the fulcrum, such a person commands or influences lesser and even multiple different chaotic segments. Perfectly at the fulcrum would be the group/people that by some extreme feat on its own command or influence every different off-balance chaos to their own benefit. As for the rest of everyone, they fill in the volume where the pendulum swings though them and the best people at the bottom, attempting the Herculean (or otherwise) feat to grasp, slow, or stop the pendulum - both from harm, but also sweeping people away to various ends of chaos.
Societies of individuals who treat individuals as mere parts of a whole and do not respect individual rights, historically are not on the right side of history. The arbitrary labeling of left and right has little to do with it. Decreasing reasoning and increasing anti-individual rationalizing does.
so sorry the naturally violent dimension of life happened to you, princess
The left/right paradigm is a false paradigm, as both ends have an extreme: totalitarianism, with slightly different flavor....a spectrum that would make more sense would have No government on one end, and total government on the other. A constitutional republic with limited government for example, would be much closer to the "no government" side than the "total government" side.

Thanks. That was very helpful. I just saw a headline this week where someone stated CRT is not Marxist. My first thought was, “Well, that’s pretty much exactly what a Marxist would say.” It makes it very difficult when they can define and redefine the words they use to nail them down on anything. I’ve got your book, but I’m reading The Gulag Archipelago right now, so it’s on my list after that. I also have the Inro to CRT, but I’ll read that after your CRT book..What makes it hard is many voting Americans hear someone say CRT is not Marxist and take it at face value as if they are speaking in good faith. It’s too time consuming for most people to look behind the veil, and they want to believe everything is fine.
I was raised in the UK.
I always got the impression the Americans were obsessed with communism. Kubrick's Dr Strangelove and all that.
Today I hear Americans rail against Communism and use it as a by word for " the boogie man" without really understanding what Marxist philosophy is.
I suspect this is how the criticism "CRT is not Marxist" gains it's currency.
Rather than using banner headlines we need to be able to dissect arguments in plain and concise language.
"CRT assumes people can be sorted into groups by colour. Imagine if librarians sorted books this way. How much would we learn from their library?"
Rather than "this is Commie pinko bullshit"
If you get my drift!
So true
@@mjones942 Sorry, I’m at the beginning of this journey, so my language may have been a bit imprecise. To answer your question, “would you do that with any other adherent or dogmatist on earth?” My answer is no. Based on my experience in day to day life, modern Marxists are the only “adherents” who purposefully obfuscate their core beliefs. They call themselves anti-fascists or anti-racist, or what have you, but if one digs a little deeper the Marxist roots are there, just under the surface. I suspect they hide their true feelings due to the bad reputation Marxism earned in the 20th century with the tens, if not hundreds, of millions of murders. I suspect some advocates of CRT did not even bother doing the research into the origins to determine that it is based in a post-modern rewrite of Marx, but I think the leaders of the CRT movement bear some responsibility because they present it as anti-racism without stressing the roots of the theory. The person I saw in the headline seemed to be too high up to be ignorant of the Marxist taint. This is a bit of a simplification, but I think you get the drift. I’ve still got a lot of reading to do, so I could be swayed, but for now, I’m not buying the bullshit.

I'm not sure you also realize how far ahead in "general leftism" (not particularly wokism, which we've only recently imported from the US, so thank you for that) Brazil is from the United States. I see, by following you and everyone engaged in this debate, that America is still in its infancy, while Brazil already has a leftist cultural hegemony.
So that you can have a "taste" of it: I graduated from Brazil's 5th best law school in 2011 (according to the rankings these institutions give themselves). Law school is a 5 years course. During the first 2 years, it is a general humanities curriculum, in which you take classes such as "philosophy", "political economy", "general sociology" etc. In about 18 of those disciplines I undertook, Marx was the core syllabus of ALL OF THEM. I also had to read (not joking) Pedagogy of the Oppressed in 4 of those disciplines. And, believe me, I'm barely, barely scratching the surface.
That was the primary text for much of my degree program (adult learning). It is truly horrific.

I never read Hegel, but the thesis + antithesis = synthesis principal was explained to me by some highly educated people and easy to understand. My immediate observation was that it can only work to improve conditions of life if both the thesis and antithesis are equally good/positive/helpful. However, opposites are seldom equally good. Most of the time, one is good and the other is bad. Applying this principle can mitigate the destructive nature of the bad component. But at the same time, the positive component will be weakened and undermined. So applying it successively will inevitably result in a downward spiral. I think that the greater evil of current "wokeness" compared to its previous dialectic iterations appears to support that observation. Am I missing something or over-simplifying?
This is such an embarrassingly awful understanding of Hegel, all I’m gonna tell you is to avoid this channel. The runner of this channel got exposed on Twitter for not reading Hegel’s most important works. Read Hegel yourself perhaps starting with the Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences.
@@dankmemes7342 Unfortunately "embarrassngly awful understanding" is just an insult without a single concept that makes me want to reconsider. I'm not going to waste my time reading Hegel when his fundamental principle is so embarrassingly awful, as well as shallow, at first glance. Most importantly, it presupposes that the human being is incapable of original thought and can only cobble together past ideological failures and just believe that whatever results is good, no matter the suffering it creates. If Lindsay hasn't read Hegel's most important works, I say kudos to him. I tried to read a couple of books by one of the Frankfurt school guys, and it was the most pompous, convoluted and poorly written book I had ever read. The few clearly stated ideas were all pure evil.
This podcast alone has really sharpened my understanding of the neo-marxist/woke movement. I wasn't even fully aware of the origins of the term "woke" I just believed it to be new "us vs them" slang. But now I'm aware that it's pertaining to how the neo-marxists believe themselves to have a superior perception of the world around them. They're awoken to their own "degradation" and "oppression." Thank you for the edification. I do have a layman's question that I'm willing to read anyone's response to. Isn't Marxism self defeating? We've seen in Soviet Russia and in China that communist revolutions give rise to just a new bourgeoisie in the form of the all powerful state. What is the mechanism in Marxism that would stop the cycle of peace, uprising, war and revolution? Was Marx really that naïve that he believed that human nature would magically change if everyone just did as he said?
Marxism is divide and conquer, through and through. They divide any substrate of identity infinitum, and when called out on their subversionist agenda, they rebrand language, definitions and so on to keep their agenda hidden.
It is all political subversion.
It's a death cult fueled by every hateful desire and emotion; their greed, envy, malevolence, lust, and resentment drive them to death worship. They revel is destruction, debasement, defilement, and evil. Their method yields their intended results. They aren't mistaken, they're monsters.
You have to listen to critical theorists, neo-marxists and postmodern thinkers not this dude who's not saying much and mixing everything to reduce it to one bogeyman. The progressive movement and the critical theory academical movement aren't as close as you would think, it's like if i were to say Leo Strauss and Julius Evola are the source of the far right or something like that
the critical theorists are quite critical of the oppression/oppressor over simplified dichotomy and the Soviet and China don't have shit to do with that lmao
I watched Romanian TVee's video about stakeholder capitalism and I realised that even though James's analysis about the roots and intent of wokenism is the best in the world, it is rather like discussing the symbolism and needlecraft of meghan's embroidered bridal train and thinking that that will explain meghan's subsequent behaviour. Stakeholder capitalism is driven by greed and megalomania and would have used any tool or prop it could to pull the wool over people's eyes as to what was really going on.
EXCELLENT!!! Please keep up this great and vital work!! Oh . . .and Socialismus is pronounced ( Sew-tzee-ahh-LEEZ-moose) . . . Impress your German friends! :)
Kudos for the Vicky Pollard reference and impression.
The inversion of logic is a fascinating trait of these philosophies. Andrew klavan was speaking on human nature vs Cristian moralism on his program yesterday. I think there is an interesting thought experiment examining the dichotomy.
It seems that marxists despise Christianity because they would like to be the replacement.
Heavy stuff for this 72 yr old Canadian man who studied physics at university in the late 1960s. The woke folks start with very few provable facts & almost no logic, then create an intellectual fantasy world where their opinions matter more than mine. Sounds suspiciously like "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others", but I could be mistaken. Nevertheless, I continue to work through your back catalog.
Keep up the good work - we must overcome this nonsense with reason & logic, else our entire society will collapse into barbarism just as we are on the cusp of bringing all humans into a world of heretofore unimaginable prosperity. That outcome would be a tragedy of epic proportions.
Third time through this one- taking extensive notes this time 🧐
Thank you so much for creating these videos and posting those articles, now I have a simple and approachable way of learning about these things from scratch. It's really hard to participate meaningfully in these conversations without knowing the philosophies of these movements.
Excellent, great exegesis!
Always appreciate Big Brain James
I want to see a conversation between James and someone like Kendi. If not that, see Lindsay in the lion's den, like MSNBC. He needs to reach a larger audience.
I studied Marxism under Marcuse at UCSD, and he classified fascism as a right-wing phenomenon. Many years later, when I read Ayn Rand's brilliant teachings, I realized that Marcuse was wrong, that fascism, like its kissing cousin, communism, was, in fact, left-wing, in that it was a form of totalitarian statism.
I think it would be great if James taught his New Discourses as a professor at a university. Then, grad students under him would become professors, and as such, over time, serve to defeat and root out the cultural Marxists subverting and perverting our institutions of higher learning.
Conflict theory seems an awful lot like how hitler viewed racial expansion kind of things.
Marx did mention false consciousness as a concept, but never used that term. Engels invented the term late in life.
Frankford Jews criticizing Weimar Jews. Sounds like a Jewish Civil War. Sound familiar anyone.
Awesome stuff. Laying bare the critical axioms of dialectical alienation, and its failures. Can I get into modernists' prison notebooks as a genre?
Thanks again james....Ireland
@New Discourses I loved the discussion of Critical Theory. However do you know if you can do something similar with Post-Modernism and how it fits into the woke puzzle?
Interesting dichotomy in Neo Marxist between aesthetics and Iconoclasts.
Brilliant!
34:40 That's cute, considering the Bourgeoisie is the middle class. The ones they wanted to destroy for holding up the system...
Speaking of the links in the written, online versions of the encyclopedia, yes, they are helpful to have, but could you possibly change the highlighting from the default blue? I find it very hard to read with the blue. Sue me. I'm old.
That should be easy to do
I see 3 problems reinforcing each other: Democracy; Malthusian crisis; Dialectic. Read Gaetano Mosca's work, 'On the Rulling Class', gives an interesting perspective; Mencius Moldbug summarizes the ideas well.
Dialectic is the only hope for ideological progress. I find it really hard to believe that it's a problem
Will do
@@SensemakingMartin ok commie
@@naemfield Dialectic doesn't mean dialectical materialism. It predates that by over 2000 years. The concept of dialectic is found not only in the ancient greeks, but in Taoism and Hinduism in the ancient east.
Saying that Dialectic is a problem is an extremely unorthodox statement in philosophy. It's been long prized as one of the key parts of wisdom discovery. Writing it off because Marx also employed it is just ignorant
Theodore Adorno disliking Jazz - Everyone is conservative about what they know best
Great observation!
@@codex3048 thanks!
I have an interpretative offering for that word: aufhaven(sp?) ...conditional acceptance, with mitagating prejudice.
You’re doing good work
How does James keep sane? And calm….
I keep rewatching your podcasts, as I learn more as I learn more…
Thank you, James
You’re a rockstar, and venerated here in Australia by plenty of intelligent ppl involved in the anti lockdown movement
Some of us have been red pilled for years - bc of obvious lies that didn’t make sense…
So glad you’re a major warrior on our worldwide team!
I've just been refering to them as new-age Nazis
From one atheist to another - GOD BLESS YOU.
Please quote where Lucaks writes "Aufhebung der Kultur", i can't find it because i think it doesnt exist. he writes "Aufhebung der Kunst" (art).
Thanks.
I think I understand this and I can explain it to myself for only a few days. Then it’s gone.
Crenshaw was on tv recently and did a nice job avoiding a direct answer to " Is CRT Marxist?"
intersectionality and CRT Is much larger than marxism, you can have non-marxist critical race theorists and marxist ones, or just sociological ones, you can't reduce everything to the marxist bogeyman
The books of Patrice Cullors was happy to hear compared to Mao's Little Red book was not one that she herself wrote. It was written by Thomas Mann, her mentor. It was organizing manual, the name of it escapes me at the moment
Love your content!
But I really think you should do clips like Joe Rogan, JBP, Dark Horse podcast and so on.
Not everyone have time to watch long videos all the time. And also it is a good way to send to new people and introduce them to your channel.
Speaking on the Frankfurt School in the late 1930s and especially of Lucacs:
1. It is worth noting that in Moscow, Lucacs made an acquaintance with Mikhail Lifschitz, under the influence of which he revised his cultural theory significantly (one of the few things Lifshitz quoted as his achievement was beating some respect towards the classical culture into Lucacs by means of reasoning).
2. Lucacs positions after WWII was interesting and precaious. His later works on aesthetics, for example, are mainly ignored by the Post-Marxist crowd.
3. Lucacs spent a lot of time in Kazakhstan during WWII due to evacuation.
Aufheben means to lift up but also abolish as in to lift measures, which means to abolish measures. It also can mean lifting up as in rise in respect or in admonishment or indeed in being
James Lindsay, Brion McClanahan and John Doyle. Voices of liberty.
Where is the encyclopaedia actually published? Is it available yet?
James-You should read, if you haven't, "The Dialectical Imagination" by Martin Jay (1978). This is a history of the Frankurt School for Marxism (the Frankfurt School or ISP). It's a free pdf download with a forward by Horkheimer. Fun reading. Good luck.
the ending was hilarious 😂
Thank u
thanks james
Wissenschaftlicher Sozialismus:
Wiss- (visc- as in visceral)
En- (as in end)
Schaft- (you had that almost right, the "a" is short as in shuffle)
Lich (the "i" is short as in bin, the ch is maybe the hardest for anglophones... you guys put it at the beginning of huge)
Keit (pronounced as the English kite)
Rudi Dutschke:
Dutsch- (pronounced like butch, just with d of course)
Ke (yeah, self explanatory)
Check your Mails, James - I sent you one with an interesting short essay.
The recent podcast pieces you have been doing ought to be collated formally, and published as an audio book. This work stands alone, you are unique in your sharp focus on these evils of civilisation. I look forward to purchasing the Dictionary as a lifelong reference and translation tool.
Don't get Helen to do any more spoken word/Audible narration, her voice isn't up to the task and she runs out of breath, sadly.
Might watch 👀
We need to replace the term “critical thinking” with “skeptical thinking” or “precise thinking,” the word “critical” has been ruined beyond saving.
Meet the new boss,
The same as the old boss
We just got fooled again!
This is from the first sentence to the introduction of 'Introduction to Critical Theory: Horkheimer to Habermas'(1980), by David Held, "The writings of what may loosely refer to as Western Marxism -- Critical Theory -- caught the imagination of students and intellectuals in the 1960's and early 1970's".
Thank you James! This was truly enlightening. The finest dissection of socialist ideologies.
1619 readings.. :D Sehr gut! Greetings from Germany
Re: 44:00: Our ethnomusicology prof at Kent State University told us around 1973 that Stalin called for a convention of all of the artists and musicians in the Soviet bloc countries and then executed them so he could inculcate his doctrine thru the arts.
'Socialism for absolute Beginners' by 'Second Thought' and before that the Capitalism-Videos and System-Videos by 'Some More News' are way better to understand all this.
Where does Wikipedia lie in this? What would they have to gain by censoring information on cultural Marxism? I’m concerned by this
One great use of virtual reality would be a program to allow, or even force younger generations to experience what life would be like in a Socialist/communist country like the USSR. For most, it would likely be a great teaching tool and would create appreciation of the US
Social equations are too complex to calculate accurately. Therefore epistemology conclusions would be more important than the VR model's conclusions.
The big problem always seems to be that the big, principled ideas bring about bad shit when turned into practice. I'm a philosopher in the analytical camp, but that doesn't mean that I can't see good things in continental philosophy and bad things in being too analytical. I think that we need to pick out the best of everything and try to minimize the bad....be very practical, instead of believing that we would be able to think of one big system that'll fix everything. I think that no such system is possible.
Could someone please give me examples of positive vs negative dialectical approaches so I can better understand what Lindsay is talking about toward the end of this podcast?
How does Baudrillard fit into all of this?
James, if you haven't already, and since he just won some MacArthur Foundation prize, could you do a video elaborating on your website article on the Antiracism theory of Ibram X. Kendi?
ooh it's lindsay, it makes more sense now
