Superb album, it was an experiment that needed to be made at the time and YES were probably better equipped than any other rock band to take on the challenge. They had already done an epic "full-side track" as you might call it (taking up an entire LP side) with Close to the Edge, so Tales was the natural continuation: four sides, four extended songs as a kind of symphonic suite. "The Remembering" would correspond to the slow movement of a classic/late romantic symphony (Dvorak or Bruckner, maybe), it is richly textured and lets themes and tunes unfold across its span of twenty minutes, There are amazingly beautiful stretches here - my favourite is the interlude that starts at 17:14 here, I can see you adored that one too, it has a huge feeling of expanse and vaulted shapes and colours.... :)
The "long-form song" is something they really learned to handle on this album, I think "Ritual" achieves it best of all - but also, you really should listen to "The Ancient", the most free-form sounding piece they had ever done (or would ever do, I guess!), with astonishing guitar (both electric and acoustic) and drums, a majestic evocation of a primeval/mythical early human past, stone age or bronze age.

GENIUS! HIGH the memory carries on vividly of experiencing this incredible journey LIVE in 73 through a sea of Tripping dripping tears 😂❤❤❤ From the moment the dreamy chanting lullaby sets sail from the sweet innocent shores of pure love, I am completely engulfed & swept away with emotion. The tidal wave that gradually arrives is only the finale of a gorgeous flowing journey of tranquil swelling melancholia, nostalgia and hope. The REMEMBERING moves me to tears 😢 just as much as AWAKEN. This dream always leaves me beached awakening on the sands of eternity.

"Tales from Topographic Oceans" is the most wonderful work of music ever written and performed by anyone anywhere at any time.
I'm always amazed that this album was released on the same day as ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery." The two most ambitious albums by the two most brilliant bands coming out side-by-side. Definitely a peak moment for civilization.

@@retroreactions.... I saw Carl Palmer in an interview. He was asked if he knew Geoff Downes before they got together in Asia, and he said that he had seen Geoff playing with Yes during the "Drama" tour, then he added with a chuckle, "England is a very small place!"
Greg Lake and Chris Squire used to be flat-mates. That's how Lake learned to play the bass with a pick - just like Squire.
Hey! Have you reacted to any Asia? I can't remember. I'm sure you have. But "Wildest Dreams" has bit where Carl goes insane.

It's hard to believe this majestic piece of music was performed by a rock band. It is so symphonic, that I could easily picture an orchestra playing it. And there's no other singer alive that can do this masterwork the justice it deserves than Jon Anderson.

Out of the entire Yes catalog, The Remembering is the Yes song that Jon Davison wants to sing the most. Yes hasn't played this song since 1974. It's long overdue. And everybody missed the 50th anniversary opportunity. The biggest mistake Yes ever did

When I listen to this composition again and each time with the same enchantment, I tell myself with complete certainty: Having named our band (late '70s - mid '80s) rock cover (prog, hard, blues, southern) of which I was the lead guitar (and lead vocal, on some songs) "The Remembering" (in homage to YES), was without a doubt the first of our best achievements. 'Tales from Topographic Oceans', brilliant from beginning to end. Melodic, dark, deep, soft, heavy and sometimes tribal; the interaction between Chris and Alan is incredible. Thank you.

How wondrous to share this ancient treasure with a young and appreciative soul. This was the side that got the most plays at the folks house, where I was living at time of its landing on Earth. Reviewers went apeshit. Music writers were of their time. Yes was 50 years ahead of their time. At least Jon was, and probably still is, being a representative on Earth from Heaven. The book upon which it is based is even more wondrous than the music, but the guy was a Yogi. It was the habit to study the art and read the supporting material, and so Yes brought the Yoge, Hesse, Tolstoy and others to young ears and minds, adding to their ongoing value and quality.
I was always fond of the snappy "Don the cap and close your eyes/ Imagine all the glorious challenge" section, but with headphones, that final section really shines.
Glad I couldn't sleep, and saw this waiting. I'll sleep better now. Cheers!

According to legend, RW Curry ate during two Manchester concerts because he had so little to do. The song was then dropped from the tour outside the UK. As a Christian, RW couldn't open up and get excited about this Shastras project (started solo, left the group after touring), which was pushed forward by Jon ("little Napoleon?!?") and Steve. Chris later praised the DLP.
Back then as a teenager I was confused, but after listening and discovering it several times, I found access to Ritual (which was later played live, see Yesshows) and The Ancient. For a long time The Rembering was somehow too "pathetically churchy" for me, but over the years I began to discover and love the musical nuances of the first two sides.
When listening to TOTTO you have to be willing to let yourself go and "go into it", otherwise you won't find enjoyment.
Thanks to Yes for the courage to have such an album in the catalog, but also to YOU for engaging with the spiritual work.

While recording Tales, British Atlantic Records executives kept pestering Yes for hit singles. When they learned it's going to be a double album, they insisted on four singles that better be hits.
Ahmet Ertigun pays a visit from America to see how things are going, and Anderson bumps into him and says "Your boys are harassing us for hit singles and it's disturbing." Ahmet says "Do whatever you want. I LOVE YES!"

The late somnabulistic hypnotist (the very deepest soul level) and writer and Delores Cannon (The Convoluted Universe, maybe Book 4 but can't remember exactly) has referenced the Source Creator (rather ineptly referred to in this world as God) as an Ocean of positive, benign and loving energy (my paraphrasing). Through the instrumental music on this track, I can see why and I get it. Sublime, what else to say.

Well done - but avoid side 3 😂
Overall, it’s a challenging album. I initially didn’t like it much, but it grew on me. 😊

Well the first half was amazing, so I expect the same from the other half! Though this song will likely remain my fave from the album...

@@retroreactions.... Side 3 has a lot of dissonance and discord. I used to skip it - but then, I also used to fast-forward my Close to the Edge cassette (!) to after the beginning chaos 😂. Eventually, the “challenging” aspect becomes part of the overall experience 👍🏼

Yes always have been The Band From Another Planet.
I still remember those first few listens, the first few hearings, and asking myself, “Who ARE these guys?”Surely(Surely) they can’t be real! They aren’t from around here, they have to be aliens from the future, here to show us the limitless power and potential of music.
These feelings persist to this day. Some have come close, a few have equalled the thrill and majesty of the best Yes music. Like this song, largely passed over for 50+ years and still sounding better than ever. Still better with each listen. No one has ever surpassed them.

My least favorite of the four sides. Not saying it’s no good, it is still a sublime piece of music, especially the last few minutes, from the lute section onward.
