I think Disney needs to focus more on plot instead of filler. Unanswered questions like this deserved their own episodes instead of things like “ who broke into the candy shop?”
That's the same thing I always think about.
I think that’s the case with most of season 2. The amount of episodes they spent stuck on that island seemed kind of unnecessary

Their characters would be like "boom, here I am, a character without any backstory". They should really pay attention on those things. I don't have any hatred or anything against Disney because I love Disney and I would love Disney even more if they fix these things. 😊

This is one of the many, many, MANYYY reasons people want a Varian spin-off because there could so much more to his story, he has so much potential!
I just noticed something in the video...
When it played the part about him being the royal engineer, which is AFTER the sun and MOON stones were destroyed entirely, Varian's blue hair stripe was GONE.
2:42 and 2:48 are the best views of this. You can also see it in 2:56 after the boiler explodes.

Also, Varian's dad was the only one of the brotherhood who had a kid after the blast with the moondrop. But to explain away the whole glove thing, Cassandra's gloves seem to be made out of metal so it melted into her skin, while Varian's is leather. Varian deals with a lot of chemicals so I would assume by default his gloves would be a little more resilient. I just wanted to throw some additional observations out there, some food for thought
I don't think her gloves are metal - they would be leather as well just not as thick since Varian's were crafted for his alchemy. This is magic though, not alchemy and the magic eats away at the gloves and just stops 'magically'.

Let’s not forget that at first (or who knows maybe he still had at the end of the series) had a HUGE crush on Cassandra you can clearly see this in Season 1 Episode 1 “What The Hair” and in Season 1 Episode 8 “Great Expotations”.
It just makes him that much adorable.
I don't see the strip as just being a "stylistic" choice. Most of the characters in Corona, and the show as a whole, have natural hair colors. I strongly believe in your theory that Quirin's encounter with the moonstone was passed down onto Varian, and that's why he has that strip. I was eager to see if you'd cover Varian's hair in a video, and I'm so glad you did!

Yeah, Varian's arm wasn't destroyed from the death magic, but what I thought was the bigger detail was that his life energy wasn't being drained. I mean, that incantation seems to drain all nearby life, even what isn't in direct contact with Rapunzel herself. So why were Varian and Kierin seemingly unaffected?
That is interesting , even at the great tree when Rapunzel wrapped her hair around the plant thing everyone around was still being drained.
Quirin had the amber all around him to shield him from the incantation, and the incantaion wasn't used long enough to get through the amber AND harm Quirin. Also I think that Varian touched Rapunzel more briefly than Cassandra did, though I think the real reason he didn't get hurt from touching her is just the show being lazy.
Maybe the moon stone has some sort of radiation and Kieran got some and gave it to Varian through DNA?
Did anyone notice that in the final moments of the series where Varian is shown with his dad, that his streak is gone? Maybe since the moonstone was destroyed, the magic that possibly lingered in him is gone.
Not true at all. The moonstone was not destroyed,it merged with the sundrop and that was an animation mistake or a shadow effect(the place was too dark to see it),you can see the blue hair back in the next scene when they are singing

This was true for the scene with Varian and Quirin, but in the last group shot it's back.
Chris sonnenburg himself said it was just a character design and had nothing to do with the moonstone. But I'm not trying to hate on moon Varian fans! The unanswered questions are up to the fandom now.
Maybe he didn't tell us the truth. Remember Chris' himself told us that we will learn more about Varian's mother but the series has ended and still we don't know anything about her.
If it was always meant to just be a design choice and not mean anything, that shows a remarkably level of tone deafness to the world they were writing/designing for. Unusual/non-natural hair colors have implicit meaning in the Tangled-verse, as explained in the video. Giving a random side character who apparently was never meant to be anything more than a one-off villain at best a very oblivious streak of blue hair (not any other color, but specifically BLUE, in a series where the Moon was a very present celestial force) without any intention of ever addressing it or explaining it in any capacity within the narrative implies a certain level of carelessness. Don't add things to a character simply because they 'look cool'; consider the world you're designing this character for, and work accordingly. This is character design 101.
I know it was just a design choice (I think deep down everyone does), but it's still a cool theory to think or read/write fanfictions about.

I honestly feel like that this was the ending the show was leading up too. The ending didn’t feel as fitting for what we were led to believe, especially since Chris said we would see what’s on the note and learn more about his mom. I think it maybe could be the fact that Varians popularity grew so much over the show and Chris has been very clear about not focusing on him and focusing on Raps. If they did go through with this, then Varian would get a lot more attention. I dunno, it feels unlikely at the same time though.

In my opinion is that it is symbolism to how Varian was once "evil" and how he was the middle ground of the mindset of good and evil and having a neutral mindset. But I would have liked to have a more fleshed out story to Varian.

If Varian was in some kind of scene in the movie Tangled, they should present both him and his father being hospitable towards Eugune and Rapunzel while they're on their way to Corona, and show them that there's nothing better than a healthy and bonding relationship with your families, that would be a touching scene

I'm actually disappointed that this theory was never canon in the tangled series...It would have been an amazing surprise if Varian was in fact connected to the moon stone and he gained great powers in season 3. He could have used this power to help Rapunzel during the final fight with Cassandra and then Zhan Tiri. It would have been awesome! I loved Varian just being an alchemist but I was really hoping for that extra spice to his character haha.

I always assumed that since his father was caught in the stones blast before Varian was born it affected him and a small part of it's power was inside him and caused him to be so drawn to them.
I heard somewhere that Chris Sonnenburg (Creator and executive producer of Tangled the Series) confirmed that Varian's streak was an alchemical accident, not sure when it happened since Varian had it when he was a toddler. I still loved this theory a lot 😊💝

The thing he didn’t point out that he should have is that when the hurt incantation is used, anyone around the user becomes weakened and almost died but Varian had no effect just like his hands were fine and neither did Quirrin though that could have just been the amber protecting him. Or it could have been a portion of the Moon stone magic still in Quirrin as well.

Chris Sonnenberg confirmed the streak was just a design choice though it's still weird why they thought it looked cool on him? He did say he liked the moon Varian theory cause he liked the idea/story the fans came up with.
So if they do a Varian spinoff they could possibly include moon Varian in a way?
I still believe Varian is still connected to the moonstone, since his streak is a similar color to Cassandra's moon hair just faded.
He most likely got the streak from his dad while got struck by the moonstone and the magic went into Varian's DNA giving him the blue/teal streak.
I don't think he gained the ability to wield the moonstone power from this though, similar to how Anna got stuck by Elsa but gained none of her sister's magic. I honestly think Varian is kinda like a black rock since it would explain his similarities/differences to Rapunzel, why he's reckless, the rocks speak through him to Rapunzel, and his inventions/alchemy cause destruction.
I think how the writers could include moon Varian into a Varian spinoff is a year or 2 after the tangled fianle, Varian's moon power from within starts rising since the moonstone and sundrop are gone and Varian is being told to bring the last piece of the moonstone back to the heavens, so he goes on his journey while along t gh e way he meets up with Cassandra, learns to use his power until he can return it, learn more of his heritage, learn more of/meet Demanitus(possible descendant), Varian discovering his destiny to possibly become the next gen Demanitus working with science and magic after returning the moon magic in him to the heavens.
Though that's just what I think. I do have a Varian fan series on my channel involving Crossovers with other shows as well as moon Varian. So if you're interested you can go watch the first two episodes as well as the two shorts. It's called A Brand New Start tough I think once I start season 2 I'll call it Varian's New Adventures

Random fun fact: There was originally supposed to be more about Varian in S2, as well as more on Quirn's letter, but that plot got scrapped for some reason.
I actually think they WERE going to put in the whole moon Varian in the show, but the creators scrapped the idea to make more room for Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra plot building

Varian has both blue hair and blue eyes. Hair and eyes reveal the powers, e.g. raps uses the ultimate sundrop power and her eyes turn yellow and the decay incantation turns her hair and eyes black. So the fact that both his eyes and hair are blue makes me think that he is connected to the moon stone. Especially as cass' hair and eyes are bright blue when she takes the moon stone. Just a thought.

If you look at varians wiki it says his hair was originally red, and he is known for having fear within him, from not being able to make his father proud, everyone still hating him forever and possibly more, all the way to losing Cassandra or anyone he ever loved.
And your probably wondering why I bring up fear, back in the episode “be very afraid” the red rocks meant fear, and the rocks were formed by fear and the actual black rocks themselves, so I think when he originally had red hair was because of the amount of fear he had within him.
But also he could’ve been just a normal ginger head boy with no reasoning and it was only from his mothers side since she also has red hair
I never thought Varian was connected to the moonstone until later on after the series was over. I thought this because in an interview on the series Chris Sonnenburg was asked about moon Varian and his answer was that this was really just a part of Varian and was never meant to be more than an alchemy incident. However, Varian has had the blue streak ever since he was a child, and I liked how you pointed out how Varian was like the voice of the black rocks in Repunzuels nightmare. I think that he does have some sort of connection. Not a strong one, because when Varian spoke the moon incantation in Cassandra’s revenge, nothing happened. I think that because Kirin lived in the dark kingdom and was near the moonstone when King Edmund tried to destroy it. I think that Varian is connected through Kirin. He’s always been a mysterious character I’ve always wanted to know more about. Awesome video!

Varian's blue streak didn't stick out to me at first because it looked very gray when I was first introduced to the series. In some episodes it looks almost vibrantly blue while in others it's much more dull and gray, so I had assumed it was meant to give his hair texture. Even so, he stuck out to me immediately and easily became my favorite character. He's freaking adorable and his villain arc really hooked me. I'm not fully caught up with the series yet, but I've seen all of season 1 and parts of season 2. I've seen clips of things like Varian's redemption, Cassandra taking the Moonstone, Nothing Left To Lose, and Rapunzel using the Hurt/Decay incantation at the tree and to free Varian's father, but not full episodes. As far as characters touching Rapunzel when she uses the incantation, because Cassandra's gloves were black I didn't realize it burned away her glove AND scorched her hand to be black as well. Now that you pointed that out, it's extremely interesting that Varian's hands weren't harmed in any way after trying to shake Rapunzel awake. Before I found out about Cassandra taking the Moonstone, I was totally convinced Varian would be the one to have some connection to it, and when I heard about Cassandra I had given up on that theory entirely. But all the stuff you mentioned actually makes a lot of sense and I really hope they bring Varian more into focus in the future! (As far as I know he's been sort of the side kick translator lately)
Cass had bright blue eyes, but Varian’s eyes are a light blue. I think Cassandra’s eyes were brighter due to her having the full power of the moon stone. Varian isn’t the only Disney character who knows Rapunzel&has a colored streak of hair. Anna had a white streak in her hair when she was hit in the head with Elsa’s ice magic
That's so true! how can people refuse this theory to be not true? there's no way in hell his hair streak is normal, if it's a non natural colour streak and it's blue, then he has to have some power of the moonstone in him! how could the writers not think of that? and how come the characters didn't think that? and why didn't Varian himself question that? i'll always believe this theory to be true... if Varian and the seven kingdoms happened, then i want them to reveal that Varian has some power of the moonstone in him by something that would trigger his moonstone powers to show...and this might sound dumb, but since Hugo is blond, imagine if he had a bit of power form the sundrop, again i know that sounds stupid, but the moon varian theory made me think Hugo has some sundrop powers in him, but that would be cool to see, because you know how Raps has green eyes, and the sundrop gave her blond hair? well, Hugo is blond and has green eyes, so i have a theory that he could have some sundrop in him, but we probably wouldn't know how he got it, just a theory, but that would honestly be really cool
If Frozen and Tangled are truly connected (which they better be) then Varian can’t be connected to the Moonstone. If his streak has anything to do with the Moonstone then it’s more of a scar than a connection, kinda like Anna’s white streak.

@@danalynch118 my biggest issues with the moon Varian theory are I think his stripe is the wrong color and if Frozen and Tangled are connected then Cassandra being the Moonstone makes more sense to me. Another reason I think Cassandra is the Moonstone is if you think about it, Cassandra was only born because of the Sundrop.

I wish we learned more about Varian’s mother. I feel as though there was so much mystery around Quirin and Varian in season one and so many of those questions raised were never answered. Funnily enough, I posted a picture of the painting of Varian and his parents, asking what happened to Varian’s mother on my instagram story, and tagged Chris Sonnenburg and Jeremy Jordan, and they both saw it. I do think Chris does have an idea of what happened in Varian’s life before the events of Tangled the Series, but was unable to really flesh out due to the episode limit that season three had. I hope we do get a spin-off or sequel in the future, because I among many are dying to know what’s in store for the characters we love so much, and what may have happened to them in the past.
I actually wrote a fan fiction series about Frozen and Tangled. Varian is actually in the series. I also created some new characters. One of them used to be friends with Varian. I would love to see more Tangled but I think I’d be a little sad if my character was debunked. Maybe I’ll get lucky.

I 100% agree with this theory. I am so glad that someone else connected Rapunzel's nightmares of the black rocks and Varian. I am really hoping we get more attention on Varian if they decide to continue with the story. Varian is by far my favorite character and I want to see more of his story.
Also I'm sort of disappointed with how little of him we got in the finale.

I feel like Varian represents humanity. Like the sundrop is good and moonstone is evil, Varian is the balance between the two and also furthers the theme of redemption....
well, they did have a concept for a varian show (which was shot down bc they thought he wasn't a popular enough character), so there's a good chance something like this could have been revealed with more time spent with varian :)
Here’s my idea.
Remember that moonstone shard? Well, Rapunzel never took the shard when fusing the stones. Cass handed it out to her and she touched it, but she didn’t take it. Suppose Cass accidentally had held on to that shard, and eventually dropped it somewhere, not knowing she had it. So Varian finds this moonstone shard and, since it is so tiny and probably lost most of it’s glimmer from being separated from the rest of it, doesn’t recognize it. He can tell it’s special, so he decides to run some tests on it.
He finds it almost indestructible, and finally after pouring a solution on it there’s an explosion and he cant find the shard. He finally sees it, picks it up and holds it to his chest thankful that it’s still there. Then, this accidentally causes him to bond with it. He feels barely a light tingle, and his hair streak glows.
He doesn’t notice and continues to study it, before finally recognizing what it is when in frustration he summons a black rock that stabs through a table His powers are weak and he has no control over them. Rapunzel finds out, and we get a whole season of “How the heck do we get this moonstone shard outta here”

That is the best Headcannon that I have ever heard.
Maybe I misunderstood, but when Rapunzel is using the incantation to free Varian’s dad, Varian tries to stop Rapunzel from continuing the incantation, he gets her to stop by seemingly just closing his eyes and talking to her. I thought that was pretty strange since Adira had to bowl her into a pond to get her to stop.

Anyways..is there a chance that Varian could be connected to the Moonstone because of the Brotherhood that was formed? Since Quirin was apart of the Brotherhood, maybe Varian inherited part of the Moonstone's power. Could the explosion that happened given some of the Moonstone's power INTO Quirin? So when Varian was born, some of that power went into him.

Zhan Tiri was thought to be the purple side because when shes not being a blue ghost girl, her palette is purple (although admittedly not the same shade as the circle thing) However, when she is reborn there is this magic that is a similar shade to the purple. Which could add to the theory.
(Wasn’t in the theory I read, but I like to add that when Rapunzel meets Zhan Tiri, she told Rapuzel something similar to “an eclipse is coming” and you know what happens after that… even if I’m grasping at straws)
Now onto Varian! When Varian has that nightmare with Zhan Titi about the scroll, he’s this reddish color. The same color as the other half. Not much to add, but hey Varian is pretty similar to the dude that made the portal to the lost realm (I don’t trust myself to spell it correctly, and I’m not going to search it up right now) Which was an enemy of Zhan Tiri. Even if they had similar goals, they turned out to be opposites. Zhan Tiri wanting power, and the dude wanting something. Wasn’t totally clear why he research the sundrop and the moonstone, but I’m going to assume it was for knowledge.
There was also something about how in the nightmare the sun and moon symbol circled around Varian.
I was like that’s so true when he said about his gloves melting away and not his hand Scorched unlike Cassandra

I wish Varian got to help with the battle more. It sucks that he built that portal only for it to suck them out of the plot and later for it to be smashed and him taken out.
Also, when Rapunzel returns the sundrop/moonstone back to space and the last clip of Varian shows where he’s working with his dad, his streak is GONE???! It literally disappeared!!
I feel like they should've made Varian a bigger deal.
This time, not just because he is a ridiculously amazing character, but because it would be ridiculously interesting to see more interactions with Varian and Rapunzel because their relationship is really interesting. Added the fact that Varian probably has a magical connection to the moonstone and Rapunzel being the sundrop, after all they do actually do exactly what is expected from the Sun and Moon/Light and Dark elements looking at it from a Frozen II point of view. Think about it, they had moments where they didn't get along and were enemies, and moments where they work together just like friends. After all, we know that Cassandra would not be anything connected to the moonstone by destiny since she only stole it and it was part of her temporarily. Varian, on the other hand, had his hair stripe since birth, making him like Rapunzel; more connected to the magic, even if it isn't, in it's entirety, in him or him. But he still undoubtedly has a bit of the moonstone magic.
I thought Varian's gloves were just thicker and more protective than Cass's and that's why he wasn't hurt. Varian being connected to the moonstone is a good explanation

I miss this show so much :( I loved the ending but I still wish we got more explanation about Varian’s past. His hair stripe, his mom, the note, etc. But at least he got his happy ending.
My thoughts on Varian not being injured when trying to snap Rapunzel out of the Decay Incantation is simply that his gloves were thicker. Cassandra's gloves would have likely been fairly thin leather so that they would interfere with her ability to use her fingers in any way. Whereas Varian's gloves likely would have been a fair bit thicker since their primary purpose is to protect him from the dangerous chemicals he works with.
I figured out a way to connect VATSK with the main series. Have Varian's mother's work be connected to the moonstone. That's how she and Quirin met, and it would open up an awesome pathway to combine the magic of the show with Varian's alchemy.
In the first frozen movie the first song meant to be forshaddowing implied that it was the temperature Elsa was born in and the weather and connecting to another major plot point. Run off from the troll magic from the mountains . Who knows what the rain washes down
I never really put more thought into the fact that Varian wasnt hurt by Rapunzel because of the gloves. But looking back now Cassandra was wearing gloves too but she still got hurt!
I couldn't help but read the whole tumblr post that you shared in the description. It felt like 20 pages, but it was all fascinating in the reasoning and everything. It's literally convinced me that Moon Varian is somewhat canon. You guys should read it. It's lengthy, but trust me it's worth the reading.

one thing I found really interesting was in Be Very Afraid. At the end Zhan Tiri told Cassandra that Rapunzel had the ability to take away her power but Rapunzel wasn't the one who did that. It was Varian. As a matter of fact, Rapunzel didn't even do anything to make the red rocks go away, that was all Varian. He was the one who made the compound, climbed up there, and poured it on the rock. He was the one who took that away from Cass and I find it interesting how it's almost never brought up again
thank you so much for making this, the end of this show has been to be a little hard on me, and I've been feeling really down because of it. But videos and content like this prove that the show is still alive within the fandom and it just makes me feel a lot better, so thanks again, to everyone who doesn't plan on stopping their excitement over tts.

I agree. It's more than just a question about the hair streak, that could be just a design choice if nothing else came up, but like you brought up, there's a lot of little things with Varian that hinted at there being more to him or even originally more to his story that never got addressed.
Woop I pause the video to say something! So for the dreams where the black rocks use the imagery of Varian to tell Raps that she have to face her destiny, I think it's because the rocks could feel that she was feeling guilty about him and so they used him to put pressure on her, just like they were feeling her love for Eugene and Cass and so it made them disappear in her dream

EdDaWiz talked with Chris Sonnenburg and it was brought up about Varian's blue streak. And Chris does encourage fanfiction/theories people come up with.
Is it just me or in 2:42 though about 2:50, I can't see the blue streak in Varian's hair. And this happens after the moonstone and sundrop are united and basically sent out of the world into space. Whatever happened to them is a mystery, but their power was no longer present and Varian's hair streak is suddenly gone. I don't know if that was just an animation error or my eyes playing tricks on me or what but I just thought I should acknowledge this.
Also, in the first season, Rapunzel's hair started glowing when she was near or touching the rocks, and Varian made her hair glow in Secret of the Sundrop, when he was trying to free his father.
Now it’s interesting all the theories you can come up with about his hair streak but I think it’s cool. He’s very imaginative and brilliant so I think he’s had in the right direction again and I’m glad. I think Varian’s potential has yet to be seen. I’m glad Rapunzel never gave up on him, and I’m glad he was redeemed his potential has yet to scratch the surface of anything. What’s the one who did bring Rapunzel back and I’m glad he did. You did a good job on this I can’t wait to see what you do next Isaac. You do such a good job on these videos.
Every time we saw Varian in S1, I actually didn’t even notice the hair streak. It was only at the re-introduction of his character in S3 that I realized: “Oh, he has a blue hair streak, was that always there?” (Yes, yes it was)

I know the show's over and all, but I am 100% on board with this theory! Everything about it makes so much sense!!! There were so many times when they could have pulled this off, and I really think that if they had made the show as long as it was originally going to be, Moon Varian would've happened.

i hadn’t thought about this at all throughout the whole series. i think that it might also be linked to the fact that varian’s father is also a part of the brotherhood. the other two members don’t have children so there is nothing to compare it to but i feel like it may have been part of that? idk.
Apparently the hair streak was a character design choice (it was confirmed by Chris Sonneburg in another interview if you wish to see it), but I do hope that we could get a Varian spin-off which could give some backstory behind the hair streak.
I'm open to the possibility that maybe Varian could be a descendant of Demanitus and/or perhaps a foretold successor. I personally think Moon Varian is off the table, but I admit the possibility was there originally.
The blue hair streak could have been made due to Quirin's exposure to the Moonstone explosion. Or perhaps a lab accident of Varian's, or perhaps more interestingly, his mother (I believe she was also an alchemist). Perhaps it's a mixture of a few of these ideas. Still, I'm honestly open-minded to all kinds of possibilities.

I would love for Disney to make a spin off series of Cass on her adventure of self discovery. It would lead to her finding some problem where she goes back to Corona for help and they find out that Varian has some moon magic in him. Because honestly moon!Varian was an opportunity that Disney missed but could still do if they continue this series with Cass's adventures.

I've always believed that Varian wasn't affected by the decay incantation because Rapunzel is using a different kind of magic here. The first time was used on plants and living things. It caused living things to whither, including people. With Varian, however, she was using magic on rock. It was hot and it caused things to melt rather than whither. Since Varian isn't a rock, he was unaffected.
But then, you'd think that it would have some effect on the building itself, so idk.
Also, that leather should have burned his hands anyway, it melted, surely it would have been hot to give him something, but there’s not a scratch, not a flinch, nothing effected him

This was a very neat video. I'll admit, I had a lot of the same theories myself. If you could, would you mind doing more research on Varian's mother? It seems there's a whole awesome, untold story there. I assumed his connection to the moonstone had something to do with her (much like Rap's connection with the sundrop started with her mother being healed by the flower).
So I wrote my own theory on facebook yesterday saying that at the Great Tree Zhan Tiri cursed Cass and chose her to possess the moonstone. That’s why her hand got burned. Varian’s hands didn’t burn up because Zhan Tiri knew that Raps isn’t as close to Varian as she is to Cassandra. Therefore that’s probably most likely why we didn’t ever get moon Varian. But I do agree that he might have a fraction of the moonstone’s power inside of him and that’s why he got that streak in his hair.
I always felt that since Varian’s father was from the dark kingdom it represents Varian’s connection to the dark kingdom. Since it was a duty of the brotherhood of the dark kingdom to protect the moonstone which Varian’s father was/is apart of. Also, the whole dark kingdom has a very dark blue and black color scheme and so does Varian and his father

I just noticed at the end of the series in the happily ever after bit the stripe was gone it’s strange bc it went immediately after when the moon stone and sun drop got combined and lifted up into space

I feel like they should do a prequel explaining the origins of the sun drop and the moonstone, like a thorough explanation, we go way back in time where we see the interactions of lord demanitus, zhan tiri, and their disciples. This could be an interesting prequel and I for sure would like to see it. We could learn more on how mother gothel became who she is now.
I can believe I've holding memories frozen in time but liquid water is to simple and free flowing . IV also heard wood caring memory and that makes more sense maybe she used the water to extract memories from the wood.

Varian isnt actually the only one with a different colored lock of hair. You see, think about Lady Caine. Her hair is brown, but about the same place Varian has his hair stripe, she has a reddish hair stripe. And also, think about Goodberry. He has a white hair stripe (although it might be cuz hes just old)
