- In recent years I've gotten interested in breeding peppers. I've already created a few new varieties, and I'm working on about a dozen more. Along with the peppers in this video, I hope to make more available at some point. Update: The seeds for these peppers are now available on Matt's site. His website is at www.mattspeppers.com
He is also on Instagram and Facebook.
In the interest of full disclosure, I do benefit from my seeds sold on Matt's site.
Please let us know if you've ever grown any of my peppers. Thanks for watching!

Thank you Jim! It will only be a few more days. Getting close here!
Thanks for dropping by, Matt! I saw your post on Instagram. Good to hear you are getting restocked soon. And all of that stuff from last year will be cool to see again too.
We can’t eat too much heat, but love growing peppers! You are a spectacular artist and we enjoy your creations. Thank you for the little wonders you bring into this world.
You're welcome! Thanks for the very kind words!
That's what I'm talking about! Congrats on your pepper releases :)
Thanks a bunch! I hope to have more later.
Hope you having a lovely weekend. You’ve done some awesome work with these pepper projects. I’m glad that you’re sharing the ”fruits” of your hard work with others. Good going, mate. Cheers!
Thanks Riaz! The pepper projects have been a lot of fun for me. I'm just glad there are people who enjoy growing them. Hope you have a great weekend!
I definitely want the Jimmy Nardello cross because we love frying peppers and the variegated pepper because it’s lovely.
Yes, I think the Jimmy Nardello cross would make a good frying pepper. There is something about variegated peppers that is hard to resist for me.
Those Midwest Midnight Oranges look amazing!!
They are pretty neat to look at. Especially next to peppers with normal foliage.
They’re stunning❣️
They've come so far! Finally getting into breeding myself but with corn. Hope you have a great weekend!
Thanks! Glad to hear about your corn breeding project. I have a corn project going too. It's a lot of fun. I wish I would have started plant breeding a couple of decades ago. Good luck with your corn project.
Good Morning Jim - What great news about your pepper variations being available for sale! Will watch Matt's Peppers to see if I can get some seeds. Love Jimmy Nardello peppers too. Have a wonderful weekend and take care..
Good Morning Sue. Thanks! I think you can type in your email address on Matt's site and he will notify you when the seeds are available. Have a great weekend!
Some really great and unique varieties. Thanks for the share!
Thanks! Can't wait for the next season to start. I have some seedlings just now popping up.
What exciting news! I’ll be checking Matt’s store for sure.
Thanks! I'm not sure when he will be caught up and have them ready, but I know he is working really hard on it.
@@MidwestGardener it’s nice though that he has email notification for when they will be available.
@@Just-Nikki Yes, I forgot about mentioning that.
Fantastic looking peppers!
Thanks! They are pretty tasty too.
Love all of crosses! Looking forward to growing more this season. It’s surprising how well everything germinated.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Thanks a bunch! Enjoy that warmer weather down your way. Hope you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving also!
Lol. Told you, it's addictive! Best to you on sales Jim.
You're right Brent. I've got more projects than I have room or time for. I wish I would have started a couple of decades ago.
Lovely
Thanks!
So exciting. Congratulations! I definitely want to get some of these seeds. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks! I hope you can get some. Hope you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving too!
You have a lot of interesting pepper projects. Congrats. I think I would like the cross between the Corbacki (I hope I spelled that correctly) and the Jimmy Nardelo. I didn't get a lot of Jimmy Nardelo peppers when I grew them, i didn't plant enough plants.. I did like their taste.
I hope you have a great time with your crosses this winter. Take care and have a great weekend.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Thanks Shirley! Glad you liked the taste of Jimmy Nardello. That one is hard to beat. I've got enough pepper projects to keep me busy for a while :) Have a great weekend!
Glad to hear you'll have more seeds on Matt's this year. I've saved my own seeds from the Midnight Eclipse with the long pods. Plan to try some of these, and more of the ones you provided, next year as it is one of the most beautiful pepper plants I've grown -- and all the other ornamentals with similar leaves are F1 hybrids.
Since it's November, I'm trying to learn more about how peppers and tomatoes can survive frosts. My Old Garden is still lush with peppers and two still-producing tomatoes -- I covered most of it twice during 28F nights. The sunny allotment bed was 100% killed by frost. My New Garden, which i never covered, took some damage (mostly to C. Annuum peppers) but other species were fine. I'm puzzled why there are such big differences in frost survival rates, i'm convinced there are more factors than just raw temperature. I think I need to deploy more temperature sensors.
When he gets the pepper added from last year, Matt will have enough peppers to keep my busy for quite a while just checking them all out.
We had multiple frosts before everything got killed by a hard freeze. I noticed that some plants definitely held up better than others. Micro climates can make a difference too. It would be fun to have a couple of acres to run some experiments with....and a couple more decades to do it :)
So far the most unsurprising factors that help are being close to the ground and being near a south-facing wall (my main weather station is about 10' off the ground and not near any structures). But New Garden has neither of these advantages, and is on a gentle west-facing slope, and it fared much better than the raised bed in the sunny allotment (which is miles from my house so I can't monitor its temperature from here. Do you know what temperature your hard freeze reached?
@@davidniemi6553 If I remember right, it got down to about 27 degrees F., or about minus 2.7 C.
