Proximo was originally going to live, but then Oliver Reed died of a heart attack from his decades of alcoholism before he'd finished all his scenes (though not before going on an epic bout of arm wrestling with just about every guy in the bar). It's incredible that they were able to cobble a sensible character arc for him out of just what they had.
The real Commodus did not kill his dad Marcus Aurelius, but he was strong and skilled with the blade, and he used to fight in the arena against gladiators. He also went incognito to brothels and taverns in order to have fun. He was assassinated by his mistress with the help of an officer of the Praetorian Guard, who strangled him in his bath. Civil war followed. This movie was not meant to be historically accurate, and I think Ridley Scott did really great. I'm glad you liked it!
Such movies cant be "historically accurate", because narrations from that time usually have a bias in one way or another ... and even today we are bombarded by biased news. It is a really great story though ... and the most unrealistic bit is the tigers IMO, because they would have to come from India, which is a bit "complicated" and lions from Africa are probably much easier.
Think about this - when Maximus rides home he basically rides all the way from Germany to Spain. That's why the horse literally collapses and dies under him
This is one of my 'comfort movies'. I like to just put it on when I'm doing something else and listen to it. I've probably seen it 200 times over the years. Loved seeing your reaction and appreciation for the story. It truly did end the best possible way. Getting his vengeance and going to 'Elysium' to join his wife and son.
I don't usually care to tell people to avoid movies I didn't like. But Gladiator has been my favorite movie since the day I first saw it decades ago. Nothing (in cinema) broke my heart quite like THAT sequel. 💔
😂 Sam, ur face in the thumbnail…it might be high up on the list of why I adore u & ur channel. U make me laugh constantly & honestly make the day better. Truly. Thanks🖖
You should look into more Ancient Rome movies like Ben Hur, Spartacus (movie and show), The Fall of the Roman Empire, The Robe, Cleopatra, and Quo Vidas.
Imagine being the only son of the Emperor. Imagine being raised your entire life to be the Emperor. Imagine your entire life that your father never really cared or loved you. Imagine your entire life that your father, instead, took to loving and caring and mentoring another man your age and giving him everything that he should have given you. Now imagine that at the end of your father's life, at the very precipice of you becoming Emperor, that your father instead gives the position to the man he chose to love more than you. Imagine how this robbery must have felt to Commodus, the complete and absolute betrayal and disrespect from your own father. ''You are the son I should have had'' Is probably the most evil thing a parent can say about their child.
Hi Sam! It’s great to see you again :) I hope all is well for you. I was just thinking about an older movie you’d likely enjoy. It’s called Parenthood. It cam out in 1989. No pressure though, I just think you’d like it
Some say "only guys" love this movie, and while some parts of it are very "for the guys", it's themes and pretty much everything transcend race, gender, beliefs and culture. Very happy you checked it out! Also if you've checked out Game of Thrones at all, Jack Gliesen, the actor who played Joffrey in GoT, based almost his entire performance off of Jaquein Phoneix's performance here as Commodus
I have to tell you SAM .. i am surprised u dont have a Run Lola Run reaction on your channel yet. i thought u LOVE movies about strong powerful WOMEN .. 8)
34:20 We learn the difference between a fencer and a soldier. Commodus knows how to fight. Maximus knows how to kill.

Friendly hint of advice: *_forget that Gladiator 2 exists!_*

It's not Germany. It's Germania.

Great seeing you and another great reaction!! :)
Always a good time when we get to watch something legendary. The movie is pretty good too.

There you are again! Jeez ❤️Ottawa 🇨🇦. I actually can’t stand this movie, but I’m watching it to see your reaction. Lame eh?
😢😢😢😢
The chrqcters of markus araius nd comidist are real and thus was almost a true story but...
ARE you NOT enTERTAINED!??!!
A great movie. While many of the characters were real people the story itself is fiction.
