Love this movie, thank you! My brother actually went to TC Williams in the 90's and said he took driver's ED from one of the coaches. As for Sunshine and the scene at the restaurant, he was from California, VERY different than Virgiana. He'd probably never actually experienced a place refusing to serve a person because of their race. Sunshine was pretty much a kid. So he really didn't fully process that he was no longer in California.
And was in a military family so his experiences would be a fully integrated experience where black and white ate together, showered together etc.. so he'd probably assume things had changed everywhere.
Got to meet the actor who plays Gerry while he was doing the Walking Dead fandom cons, he’s absolutely a sweetheart and soooo tall!!! The actor playing Coach Yoast has my favorite voice ever, I could listen to him talk forever. He actually does a bunch of book narration for Stephen King. Also met the actor who played Louie recently on a Kevin Smith (Jay & Silent Bob) Cruise. His name is Ethan Suplee, dude is muscular as hell now!!
I see so many people cut out the Gettysburg speech from their reactions, and I'm glad you kept it. It's such a profound moment that resonates with the team and audience.
Coaching can be a thankless job. Example: I was coaching a hockey game and I had a mix of inexperienced and experienced players. On the last line change of the game I pulled an experienced forward out and sent in an inexperienced defensemen in to play right wing. In that shift the replacement player scored. He was just oozing with confidence that game and I rewarded him with the chance to score and he did. However, the player who I pulled was pissed. It took a day or two for him to realize I made the best choice for the team at that moment and he apologized. Teamwork requires a lack of arrogance from all players and a 100% trust in the coach.
This was a good movie, and extra nice that is based on real people and events. Another football movie that is based on real people and also is both heartwarming and heartbreaking is, Brian's Song (1971).
Julius won Gerry over. The white boy was just going by what he was told and what the stereotype was, but he never got to play football with any of them so he was 'blind' to what he thought he was afraid of. Julius changed his mind, and it shows you that Gerry was a good guy who just needed an eye opener, aka Julius.
He was the most real and sensible guy and honestly outside of Louie the fastest to be won over and change his mind.. probably because he wasn't a "true" racist like you said, he just had never had experience with good black folks. :(
The irony of it all, Gary's mother didn't want to get to know Julius. After Gary's death, they leaned on each other. Gary not only got a brother, his mother gained second son.
There are plenty of stereotypes and preconceived notions on both sides. That was actually a key point that they were trying to drive home in this movie, but so many people miss it.
You gave me the awesome reaction I was expecting. I know it's hard being the younger generations and watching what it was really like back then.. I was there and it was awful. And like you, I thought those attitudes were illogical and counter-productive, especially in a sports setting, but also in general public. All of the poor attitudes were no surprise to me after living thru it. But I knew, based on friends I had throughout numerous schools, that attitudes were changing in the 80s. It's not perfect right now, but it will never be - like Julius said. However, it is 300% better than the 70s. Hopefully, we can build on it going forward. I loved that you saw that both Boone and Yoast had a few misdirected moves/motives and were not perfect people. Julius had selfish motives at first as a reaction to Ray not being called out on his poor blocking. Boone using only humiliation of players when not all players can be motivated in the same way. It is fine to critique, but those over-sensitive people do not respond. Me? You cannot offend me. Self esteem is very strong. I'm a "fat, drunk sarcastic Mick" - which might offend others, but usually not us Irish. I own it. People can try to use that as an insult but I laugh with them. Words are just words to me..actions are what Im interested in. Can't wait for next reaction!
This is my absolute favorite reaction to this film! It was a blast watching someone who really loves football get so into it! I didn't experience the movie. I don't care for sports, but I love sports movies for some reason. I recommend Mystery, Alaska. 😊
We had to watch this in school. Where I live, MANY people are still this racist. Like, MANY MANY MANY people. Once we got out of elementary school, none of the black families we actually had in town lasted more than 6 months. It really made me sick I had to sit next to people as racist as this in school and no one, not a single teacher, had the balls to say shit to any of them. They gave lectures on racism being "not tolerated" but when it came down to it, they just pretended it didn't happen. Anytime something happened it got around the entire school in under three minutes, but I never personally saw any of the bullying first hand. I had to witness the after effects and the clean-up efforts. I will say though that as horrible as the people here are, there were a handful of people who were crying while watching this movie (and many of them were people I never expected to see cry to this movie) and those were the only people I associated with at all. Well, as much as I could say I actually "associated" with people; I was the nerdy LGBTQ student that was outed by their best friend and had to listen to everyone whisper around me and deny everything.
This is one of my favorite movies. It always makes me bawl. 😭 Especially living in a place where racism is alive and well, it hits all the feels for me. The ignorance of people is astounding. I don't know where you're from, but I think it's definitely environment that makes you say "it's ridiculous" whereas living in it, I can just feel the hate. Such an emotional movie for me.
I don't blame Gary for being perfectly real with the coach about what he saw when the QB Rev got hurt at the same time Gary he did do the right thing at the right time! 32:38
IMO even if you don't know ANYTHING about football, this is still one of the best movies ever made. With tons of great acting performances I think for Ronnie (Sunshine), when he was taking Petey and Bleu to the one bar/diner and they warned him, Ronnie is from California, probably a nice suburb it seems like where things were probably a little more liberal and maybe even really accepting, and welcoming to all people. So getting tossed into the South like that at this time was probably culture shock for him.
Best sports films always are. People always assume Rocky is a boxing film but it's not about boxing. You don't need to understand boxing to see what a great film it is.
I want to add that coach Yoast should be given credit for the sacrifice HE made concerning his career (since he could have taken any number of head coaching jobs elsewhere, and his misguided players trying to make it work together. He has a good moral character and probably felt that change is gonna be long term and he agreed with that good change. Coach Boone's distaste for being forced to replace a great head coach because of policy is SO key and reflects his courage to try to play the cards he was dealt. Both are great humans. But you get it, as I had hoped, about it being 1971 and racism was WAAAAY more prolific then in society. We will always have it, but through my Generation and newer ones, we (most) made sure our children did not start with that racial baggage towards others different in appearance. It is taking generational change to keep increasing this better attitude. As an athlete from back in the 80s, I never saw the logic in keeping the best player at a position because of their race. It was stupid. The whole point of playing best players on the TEAM was to win. I was the starting catcher for my high school team all 4 years..but like Gossling's character, if someone was better than me, no matter what race, then start HIM. I wanna win goddamn it! I don't like illogical and emotional decisions. lol Great reaction so far!....

OK. This is pre-watch comment with my expectations. I'm hoping you remember that all of the attitudes about race by the people were based on their upbringing and how much is subconsciously put into the younger generations based on learned behavior over the years, especially in a Confederate state like Virginia. Obviously, people like you and I had better role models. My parents always told me to never judge people based on appearances and that the heart and soul, along with actions, are a better basis if you are a person who judges. I believe humans are either a$$holes or non-a$$holes. I feel people like us learn so much more about a person without all of that learned behavior baggage that others carry. I'm also hoping that you realize that to get to the better place we are at now had to come thru basically baby steps...judging these characters using today's morality is a no-no. If we were dropped onto the street in Birmingham, AL in 1920 and shouted out our stance against racism, we would disappear without a trace and end up 6 feet under by the KKK and citizens for trying to tear down that wall of fear all at once. I'm so excited to watch your reaction to this powerful true movie! Post-watch comment to follow. Let's go!
In many respects race relations were better then than today for several reasons. One of which is, people tested boundaries and were not thin skinned like today. Over reaction is rampant today. It leaves no room for intelligent discussion and belief sharing. True diversity is being destroyed in the name of diversitty. Diverse cultures are being destroyed by forced conformity. Racism is bad, but intolerance and selfish arrogance are far more dangerous.
How are things different today? What's an example of forced diversity? Wouldn't forced integration of schools be a better example of forced diversity? And clearly that worked. You cant hand hold and sweet talk racists.

@@catlover1944 I always take note of recommendations but as for requests I have a request option on my Patreon, which is currently sold out but it’s there!
@@OGBReacts oh, ok. If I could put in a recommendation, I was wondering if you would be interested in reacting to the 1994 Live Action remake of the Jungle Book? If you can't, that's fine I understand. I was just wondering
Exactly Sam but you is still Cute too🩷 10:04
I hate the racist parts of this movie but it’s so necessary for the time period and the story line. It’s rough until after camp lol
You look super pretty super duper pretty and extremely cute in the Steelers Jersey Sam I love it😍😍😍😍😍😍 0:40
Let's go!
Now you know that's so BS cause if he lose one game just one he's one and done and out the door for no reason whatsoever! 20:42
Great movie!
Steelers suck! 😂
Hayden stole the movie!
sadly- a lot of people still think this way- 99.9% of them vote for Trump.
