POR - through or for. And pelo, pela, pelas and pelos are the contraction of POR with the articles.
por + o = pelo
por + a = pela
por + as = pelas
por + os = pelos.
Examples:
Ele passou pelo (por + o) parque . He passed through the park.
Obrigado pelo (por + o ) presente. Thank you for the gift.
Pela (por + a)
Ela passou pela (por + a) escola. She passed by the school.
Estou grato pela (por + a) ajuda. I am grateful for the help.
Nós andamos pelos (por + os) corredores da universidade. We walked through the university halls.
Passei pelas (por + as) ruas antigas da cidade. (I walked through the old streets of the city.)
