Above all, I respect the work of Mel Gibson. I have to admit that it was Passion that deeply shook me when I saw him, and that I have looked at the Catholic faith with different eyes since then. I'm not a believer. I am nominally a Muslim, but I am not a practical believer, the Gnostic view of God is much closer to me. Still, I have to admit that I believe Mel when he shares his concerns about the Church publicly like this. In the end, I'm not sure anything can go back to the way it was before. It is heart warming to hear Mel Gibson defend some of these priests. There is a saying that Orthodox priests should be concilliatory. Mar Mari Emmanuel, Andrey Kuraev and others were outspoken but also much loved. Their outreach is absolutely evident from what happened to Mar Mari Emmanuel earlier this summer. We should keep the balance, we should be as much as possible concilliatory but we also need some voices of broader appeal like them. At the same time, many of the bishops have a very inflated image of themselves and take it upon themselves to act without humility, not always representing the Church as a whole. All of us are the Church, it is not just the few bishops sitting in a council behind closed doors, that is arrogance. Mar Mari Emmanuel has been much loved and has a reach that presently few other Orthodox priests have. The same could be said for Andrey Kuraev, an academic and ordained priest who was striken off by a Russian Council. If outspokedness was their only failing, then I hope most certainly among many other Orthodox Christians that another Orthodox Church can take them in its arms.

We can always pray to help the church on Earth. Have faith that light will always overcome the darkness. Being practical, start with employing virtuous people if you have a business. Give them a living wage. You cannot keep families and parishes together if they cannot afford to have a home and a family. The stronger the parish is, the stronger the community will be. Too many parishes and their communities rot because the people cannot afford to live there anymore.

I am Greek, Orthodox and live in Greece. It is funny how a known actor, a fancy background and some sentimental music can cause comments like the ones i read... bishops know exactly what they are doing, it is extremely difficult to become a bishop and also hard/tough for a bishop to cancel a priest.
If they do it they do it for very specific reasons, orthodoxy is based on the original books and the original interpretations. You can't just preach whatever you feel like, there are rules.

I can only imagine what a bishop like Josip Strosmajer went through in his struggles against the Pope & the Catholic hierarchy of his day - but in the end, he surrendered to them as well.

Ljudi misle da ih je Bog napustio, traže čuda, osjećaj prisutnosti Božje. Katolik se ne smije voditi emocijama. Emocije su varljive. Može nam se odjednom pojaviti emocija tuge, ne znamo zašto, može biti od neprijatelja. Uvijek moramo biti sabrani i bidni. Bitna je odluka. Ne postipati prema osjećajima. Nepriajtelj najčešće napada maštu, umeće nam fantazije. Ne može nam ubaciti u misli nešto što nismo sa svojih 5 osjetila iskusili. Primjerice ako netko gleda pornografiju, sotona može djelovati na to da osoba ima seksualne fantazije, misli naviru bez kraja, oduzimaju vrijeme, ostavljaju nas emocionalno iscrpljenima. Nakon ispovijedi grijeha bludnosti, sotona nema vise ovlast slati nam u maštu misli o grijehu bludnosti. Raskine se ta duhovna veza. Osoba opet moze svojom voljom nastaviti grijesiti bludno, opet onda sotona ima pravo napadati maštu bludnim mislima. Uvijek trebamo razmisliti odakle neka emocija. Bog nas stavlja naa kušnju, čini se kao da nas napustio, no on nas nikad ne napušta. Isus je bio kušan u pustinji. Svi mi proživimo našu pustinju, kad smo najslablji, osjećamo se usamljeni, napušteni, nevoljeni, sotona se također javi kao anđeo svjetla, nudi užitke ovoga svijeta, grijeh, a kazna za grijeh je smrt.

Our problem is not that we did not accept the Second Vatican Council, but that we did not accept the First Vatican Council yet, especially teaching about the Pope's infallibility. This is the problem and the scandal that these people have, the struggle to obey the Church. One thing the evil one hates the most is obedience, and we see its consequences in the Church today. The Church is one, and if you claim to be Catholic, then you believe in the Church's teachings and respect the Church's authority (and its documents and Councils) or you don't; and if you don't that means that you are not part of the Church, in other words, that you are not Catholic. I think it is as simple as that.
What I do not understand is that it is easier to believe and to listen to what the angry Church Militant, Michael Voris, bishop Vigano, and such have to say than to listen to the Pope(s). This is absurd (this is not a judgment, but a question and brotherly correction).
If you see the history of Donatism vs St Augustine it is similar to what is going with SSPX tendencies, and even to those who fall into their traps.
Also if you believe so much that the "Old Mass" was not abrogated then, look at the first writings about the Mass from Justin the Martyr and Hippolytus, and look at canon 20 of the Council of Nicea which says that at the Mass the people should not kneel, because that is a sign of sadness and penance. That was never abrogated either and yet we kneel at every Mass. What I am trying to say is that the liturgy in the Church has changed over the centuries and in different councils. Latin was not used as a liturgical language at first but Aramaic/Hebrew (later) Greek; and disciples certainly did not speak Latin (not that we know of). The "Old Liturgy" as such was established (finalized) at Trent, but that was also changing slowly, especially in the last century not only at Vatican Two but it started changing 20 - 30 years before Vatic. II.

I’m Byzantine rite Catholic, I won’t go to a Roman rite liturgy if it’s not ad orientem. Even then, that’s only if I can’t make it to the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in the Byzantine rite, or an Eastern Orthodox equivalent. I hope the Roman rite can return to the traditions of their rite. I’m not saying the TLM is the traditional liturgy as that’s an innovation done at the council of Trent, a bare bones version of the traditional liturgy of Rome, the Divine Liturgy of St. Gregory the Great.
