You saved me. I could not get a roof to punch a hole. your video convinced me to take it off the roof, make it a solid, punch the hole through it and put it back. 3 hours of my life gone but you saved me. Thanks heaps
This has to be the best introduction ever. The comment previous was before I ran into another problem. I was coming back here to run through it again, and you saved me again. I think working through a complex problem and how you can break it down (like the angled roof that I couldn't put a window in) to solve the problem you have. Once you see on this video to just take all of the issues that might be causing you grief out of the equation and only work in the most simple forms before you put them back to make up the whole solution you can do some amazing things.
This videos are everything. No matter how long you've using sketchup there is always something new to learn, even if it's basic (well...I speak for my self lol)
I am a teacher that is now doing virtual classes and Sketch Up is free for our district. Usually we use AutoCAD and Inventor. I spent 2.5 hours looking for info on Solids! Thank you for this. I have subscribed to your videos.
Hi Aaron, I hope you are well. Along with the rest of the solids explanations, thanks for continuing to remind us how interacting with Groups and Components differs when they are open for editing and not open for editing. Understanding the difference makes us all better SketchUp users!
Thank you Aaron. Pls don't be apologetic for showing basics. There are many different use avenues for this (and most other) software. I believe most people learn the things that immediately get them up and running (productive) and then learning new things takes a back seat to earning a living. It's wonderful to have your easy to follow videos for learning all the various aspects of this product. I wish other software I use had similar guidance.
Solid Tools is essential if you have really tiny stray edges inside a group, or tiny teeny holes in a face. In days of yore (I've been using SketchUp since 2007), without Solid Tools, it was really frustrating to fix solid group errors, especially for 3D printing.
Thank you very much. I am trying to subtract a high heel shoe from a box volume like a space print. But to turn the high heel with all the curves into a solid seems to be impossible. It's the red high heel in the 3D warehouse or the clear one. There are very few high heel shoes online I am trying to make like a sculpture of the two sides left without the shoe. Love your tutorials. Thanks
Big like! I’m using sketchup since september ‘19 and never used the solid principle. Looking forward to learning more about this and how to use it in interior and furniture design.
Aaron, This is my first week learning SketchUp. I'm finding your videos to be an excellent resource. Clearly this is going to be a long learning curve. I like it when you explain a way to do something and then point out drawbacks and follow with a superior way to achieve the desired result. Somehow those explanations make a stronger impression. (Do you have a video that explains how you built the peanut butter cup?)
The purpose of Group is used to keep multiple components together, not for modelling, we use solid modelling for creating models in sketchup, for 3d modelling fundamentals of solid modelling are to followed. That is the only way
Hi Aron. Nice video. I am new to sketchup, so sorry if its silly question, but how were you moving the camera around without switching to orbit tool on the mouse. Is there a way to do this with the keyboard?
How to make a hole in the shape of a letter? I can extrude a letter from a surface, but I can't press it into a surface to make a letter hole (even in a flat surface). If I make 3D letter and try to combine the two volumes (Letter and surface) , then the Sketch Up says that the letter is "not solid". What to do?
Hej Aaron, I've been using sketchup for a number of years, and have watched many youtube episodes. I am a contractor, and enjoy designing new spaces for my clients. It is time consuming, and challenging to create a 3D model of my project. I appreciate the work you do to explain the process, as I have made every mistake in the book in using this software. I love the control of the space via the software, but... I actually build the product, and it's always changing during the build. It would be great to have a way to integrate actual measurements into the software model. Any thoughts?
Hello, I have problems with solids. - I have 2 solid groups, each in a layer. - I'm cutting with each other - the cut group is no longer in the layer Thanks for the help
Thank you for your clear explanation of the possibilities in SU. I would like to help social housing with a SU model apartment affordable, green and human-sized. SWHHiN FROM BOXTEL 3dwarehouse
I live in hope to see ai assistance. A button called is my model solid? If not it hilights faults and pop up say want me to close it in. I dream of saying you can see what im trying to do dam it just fix it. Ive been in 3d printing for decades. At this point theres not 1 site out of 54 ive vetted with a working exact text sesrch. Even the search engines dont have them that work. I cant find my own business and i know its there I keep writing to microsoft and ibm. Can a quantum pc put words in alphabetical order...cause it aint happened yet. Search models by oldest first ...sorry that dont work. Search for 3d print ...no sorry none of that invented yet. Omg stone age. My joke at rhe monment is to rhose afraid of ai...if the terminator lived next door it couldnt find you even if you were listed. Did you know about entire 3d print industry globally has been down over 12 months. Hard to believe ? Try selling your invention ownership...sorry not 1 single website has resumed business services in over 12 months..so dam grim. Ive had customers on my back all that time and im unable to operate so im down. My clients are down. Entire world remains down. Milliins of peoples value jobs and businesses remain down. The massive ongoing losses of value is on a epic scale pitty sketchup aint in 3d printing. We could use a new player to migrate to. To give our commisions on sales to. Cnc global comunity in same dam boat. Millions of people need a working business directiry and also a site in operational statis for business use.
I know this is 2 years old but you saved me, blessings to you and ty for sharing knowledge!

Really helpful to understand the solid in Sketchup. Thank you

That is awesome! We hope you enjoy the next few weeks of videos!
Very good going to basics. I'm helping my wife learn SketchUp but your back to basic approach rocks. She will love this
Very well done, direct to the point without missing things. Thank you!

I guess you mean Solid Inspector, right?
It is brilliant- I use it every time I open SU.
I am learning sketch up and find your tutorials very helpful
Good information and what I need to learn to speed up my work flow.

Great video, I would like to know if there is a way to drill holes through multiple plates or transfer holes from say a template to other models
There is a way! The forum (forums.sketchup.com/) is the best place to get help with specific questions.
Thanks Aaron, Enjoys these.
I really like these basic modelling tips
Thanks Aaron I am one of those guys that don't take full advantage of ST. Looking forward to the next installment.
When we make a sphere it is not a solid group?

btw, SU is a polygon modeler not a surface modeler (0:35).
is that shiv from succession?
Thank you! It was very helpful to refresh basic information!
thanks...super helpful intro to solids
Thank you for answering my solid issues!
Thank you for your explanation videos
Looking for good review and tutorial on advanced Dibac joinery (making doors and windows).
It will be good if the skill builder can be grouped into basic, intermediate, and advance.
Nice video bro.... i am just getting started with sketchup with vray. Putting isolation to good use. 😎
Great 👍
this was great. How do i figure out what is the next one to watch. Is there a catalog or listing someplace I should work my way through?
Excellent coverage.

How do you orbit
So helpful,, thank you
Hi There, I imported an 230 PFC from Autocad and extruded that piece. No matter how I group it it is not solid
Anyone know how he can move the camera smoothly?
Aaron uses a 3D mouse (from 3DConnexion) in many of his videos.
Thank you so much!
Well, I learned a thing oe two about solid tools
Hello, I have problems with solids.
- I have 2 solid groups, each in a layer.

Thanks for the help
Very clear. Thx
Good start but still have issues with Solids, Can't wait till next video.
thank you so much
Thank you for this!!!

Or is it just an early record? :Ъ

Check out the Solid Inspector extension. This is the "Is This Solid?" button!
