- "Deutschösterreich, du herrliches Land" (German for "German Austria, you wonderful country") was the national anthem of Austria from 1920 to 1929. Although it was used as the national anthem, it did not enjoy any official status. It is now used as the anthem of the President and the military.
The text was written by Chancellor Karl Renner in 1920, while the melody was composed by Wilhelm Kienzl.
The Republic of German Austria was formed in 1918 as the successor to the multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire in its predominantly German speaking part. The government and population was much in favour of a unification with Germany, the German nation-state that had been formed in 1871 but had excluded Austria. However, the victors of World War I demanded that Austria remained a separate country. In the Treaty of Versailles, there was a prohibition of unification. Under the provisions of the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (1919), German Austria had to change its name to simply Austria.

Österreicher sind ethnische Deutsche, nur in einem separierten Staat.
Ich komme aus der Vorderpfalz mein Dialekt ist Pfälzisch (Pälzisch.) Und bin ich jetzt kein Deutscher, nur weil ich Pfälzer bin, Nein sage ich, gehöre trotzdem der selben Ethnie an. Die Österreicher sprechen einen Dialekt wie ich als Pfälzer und die Schwabener, Sachsener die Berliner usw. es tuen. Als Pfälzer könnte ich nach der Logik der Österreicher auch sagen, hey ich spreche meinen eigenen Dialekt, habe meine eigene Geschichte und eigene pfälzische Traditionen ich bin also nicht Deutsch. Schwachsinn!! Jedes deutsches Volk hat seine eigene Geschichte, Sprache und Tradition völlig normal. Sogar in der ach so geliebten Kaiserhymmne der Österreicher wo sie so drauf stolz sind, auch zu recht! Sagt der österreichische Kaiser: "deutscher Lande, deutscher Völker höchsten Flor." Österreicher schaut das Video von Dr.Ludwig an, warum Österreicher ethnische Deutsche sind. Gott mit euch und noch einen schönen Tag.

Ich bin mir unserer Herkunft durch aus bewusst.
Da hast du natürlich recht. Wir haben die selbe Historie, die erst ab dem Ende des HRR unterschiedlich verlaufen ist. Viele machen den Fehler die Ethnie und die Nationalität zu verwechseln. Dadurch, dass heute ein Bürger der BRD „Deutscher“ genannt wird, missverstehen einige Österreicher die Aussage. Durch zahlreiche Kriege gegen Preußen und dem späteren Zusammenschluss aller „Deutschen Staaten“ zu Deutschland außer Österreich, entstand eine Art Emanzipationsbewegung die zur Folge hatte, dass wir Österreicher uns nicht nur Staatlich sondern auch Kulturell als „Selbstständig“ betrachteten. Wäre die Geschichte nur etwas anders verlaufen, wären wir heute vielleicht noch immer ein Staat, dass man sich getrennt gar nicht vorstellen könnte. Das selbe gilt natürlich auch für die Schweiz, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg etc.

Also ich kann mich sowieso nur wirklich als Deutschen bezeichnen.
Meine Vorfahren (Mütterlicher seits) kommen aus Schlesien und Ostfriesland und sind irgendwann in die Pfalz gezogen, obwohl ich größten Teils Pfälzer bin kann ich mich mehr mit der ostfriesischen Kultur identifizieren.
Daher sehe ich mich in erster Linie als Deutscher, dann als Friese, dann als Preuße, dann als Pfälzer.
Nichts davon schließt sich gegenseitig aus, genauso wenig ist man kein Deutscher wenn man Österreicher ist.

Ich mag es irgendwie dass du immer etwas über das Lied in die Beschreibung schreibst^^ Ich wusste nämlich gar nicht dass der Text sogar von Renner selbst geschrieben wurde
Mich hat es früher gestört, wenn ich zu einem Lied keine Info hatte, also versuche ich immer was zu finden und den Text anzugeben :) Bei manchen Liedern, gibt es aber wirklich keine gesicherten Infos.

Hier in Österreich ist diese Hymne verboten.Alle anderen Hymnen sind erlaubt. Leuten wurde das Handy beschlagnahmt,weil sie sich diese Hymne angehört haben. Was ist das für eine Demokratie? Ich lasse es darauf ankommen und höre sie mir überall an,auch,wenn ich dann ins Gefängnis komme.
Ich glaube kaum dass diese hymne verboten ist...
Ich komme aus Österreich und es ist nicht verboten sondern es wird nur abgeraten das anzuhören. Diese Hymne der Österreichischen Nation war zu einer Zeit wo sich die Mehrheit der Österreicher den Anschluss an Deutschland wünschten. Ich kann diese Empfehlung verstehen, besonders bei einen Land welches das erste Opfer von NS-Deutschland war.
PS: Es gibt kein Studie oder Umfrage unter den Österreichischen Volk welche zeigen dass sich die Mehrheit der Österreicher als Deutsche Fühlen , ich tue das auch nicht , ich bin stolz darauf Österreicher zu sein.
Aber das ist ja jeden selbst überlassen.

In 1918 the empire changed into the Republic German Austria by the will of the people in the german area of former empire Austria Hungary.
Anyone wonder why the Austrian emblem,the eagle holding a hammer and sickle?
It stands for the three main groups of the society. sickle=farmers, hammer=workers and the wall-crown (which represents the cities)= citizen. But they are all placed in an equal distance from the heart of the state (the heraldic shield).

Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser aus dem Jahr 1797 bezieht sich auf den damaligen deutschen Kaiser Franz, den das Haus Habsburg stellte. Er war das Staatsoberhaupt des deutschen Reiches und musste 1806 auf Druck Napoleons von diesem Amt zurück treten.

Austria is German. I think it is like the relationship between Scots and Irish people of the Republic of Ireland. We are very distinctly the same people, United by custom, culture and language. I keep three Österriech army jackets in my wardrobe. I have found they resemble most closely the jacket Travis Bickel wears in the movie “Taxi Driver”. Not just that but I like their style and they can be bought cheaply. I used to collect uniforms and helmets and bayonets and other German edged weapons from the first and Second World War. I was stopped by police one night in Portsmouth. They checked my car and found a Waffen SS dagger. They thought I was some kind of prowler out looking for a woman to kill. They charged me with having an offensive weapon and gave me my court date. I came to court with all my WWI and WWII German war relics and proved I was a legitimate collector. I explained that I’d bought the weapon the day before and put it in my glove box so that it wasn’t on display and wouldn’t frighten anyone and told them truthfully I’d forgotten about it and I apologised. My case was dismissed. Over the years it became harder and harder to get hold of quality German war helmets, bladed weapons, water bottles and uniforms. Sadly many people I showed my collection to believed me to be a secret Nazi. There is nothing secretive about me. I believe German steel to have been and still is the finest in the world. I had blades that were sharper than a razor. They could cut you open and you wouldn’t know until it started to bleed or you felt the warm blood. I have studied knife fighting and close quarter fighting skills. There was a fault with the German ‘coal scuttle’ helmet. It made it easy for British Special Forces to sneak up on them, up end them and pull their head back and the back lip of the helmet would snap the neck if done forcefully enough and as long as the wearer had it buckled under their chin. My Grandfather was one of Britain’s founding members of the Special Forces in North Africa during WWII. He went into the Special Boat Service as a major. Today the SBS are recognised as the most fearsome of the two Special Forces. I heard many stories of my Grandfathers exploits. When he raided a German airfield on the island of Crete he single handedly killed 77 Nazis and blew up all of their planes and fuel dump and ammunition dump. They then headed back to their canoes to be picked up by the submarine that had transported them to Crete. He did not glory in the killing of these men, but it was a job that had to be done. It was him or them. It must have been such an adrenaline rush of fear and excitement right before a mission. Each man gave another a letter for their loved ones at home incase they didn’t make it. My Grandfather succeeded in every mission he undertook. He and his men were not the kind of men that the enemy wanted behind enemy lines. A ‘brick’, that’s four, of them could wreak as much havoc as a whole company of soldiers. They didn’t believe in retreat. Instead they would cover each other as one went forward with a heavy machine gun, then he’d cover as the man behind came up to his space and so on. It used to terrify ordinary German soldiers. Hitler hated these ‘commandos’ so much that he declared that upon being taken prisoner they were to be executed as a deterrent. Britain responded with this ‘for every Special Forces commando you execute we shall execute three German P.O.W’s, be very sure of the precedent you set, the people may start to see you as finished, gone crazy and needing replacement’. So these ‘commandos’ weren’t executed, however at the end of the war my Grandfather was taken prisoner. He tried to rip off all insignia that identified him as SBS but was caught. The prisoners were all rounded up in trucks to be taken to a POW camp. About half way there the trucks stopped and my Grandfather and other captured ‘commandos’ were told to run to the top of a hill and back down. The Nazis shot at them, missing them but making them fear for their lives. When they got to the bottom of the hill all the Nazis were laughing. They were sending a clear signal don’t piss us off or give us reason to be angry because we could easily kill you. When they got to their prison camp my grandfather immediately hid up in the loft of the hut he’d been consigned to. This way he was never counted and was never put on the roll call. He became a ghost. A few weeks later he actually marched out of the front gate dressed up as an Italian officer. Italy had been beaten but Mussolini was in Germany at that time and some Italian soldiers most of them arrogant officers. To make it seem real my Grandfather even spat on the boot of the infantry soldier at the gate. He made good his escape and liaised pwith people from the Dutch underground. They sent the war office a message about him and his escape. The message declsred, ‘successfully escaped Offlag 79, I await further commands’. He was told to be ready to be picked up at midnight the following night for some home leave. He came home and surprised my grandmother who knew nothing of him other than he’d been caught, she was so afraid he’d be shot and she’d never see him again. The way things worked out he never had to go back to war. Berlin fell before he was recalled. He used up all nine lives and then some. He won the military cross and bar (which means he won it twice). I could tell so many stories about him but very few will have read this far and no one would read an even longer comment. Sorry for getting carried away telling my family history, why should it be interesting to anyone else?

Hass und Liebe im Getriebe perhaps you’re right. The point I was making was that, both speak the same language and both share similar history and culture. I didn’t say Austria wanted to be a part of Germany I just said they were alike. Northern Irish Protestants don’t see any similarities between them and the Republic of Ireland. Catholics from the North of Ireland predominantly think of themselves as Irish, definitely NOT part of the U.K.

Zu lang zu schwer zu singen , schade das war nichts . Besser einen Text nehmen der sich an die aktuelle Stastshymne anlehnt. Unsere österreichische Hymne ist ja keine Nationalhymne, sondern eher eine bundesstaatliche , ähnlich der Saarhymne , oder der Bayernhymne .
Sie heisst aus gutem Grund Bundeshymne also Hymne an den Staat. Versteh mich bitte nicht falsch aber da es keine österreichische Nation gibt, kann es keine Nationalhymne geben. Es gibt natürlich einen Nationalstaat Österreich, aber eben keine österreichische Nation. Historisch gilt das Lied der Deutschen auch für als Nationalhymne für Österreich. Nation und Nationalstaat sind unterschiedliche Begriffe. Österreich besteht überwiegend aus deutschen Volksgruppen.

During the brief period of the Austrian Empire (1804 to 1867) it was no more or less Austrian than any other part of the Lands of the Hungarian Crown, including Budapest. It certainly was never "declined by the allies to Austria", whatever that's supposed to mean.
