I was in the same boat as this gentleman. I closed up after 51 years in business. Rising material, insurance, and labor costs make it nearly impossible to make a profit. You can only raise prices so much before your customers walk away.

RIP! It's particularly heartbreaking because every room that this hominin entered was flooded with the most brilliant light and unconditional love! They spread joy, and always had a kind word for everyone, including the fur babies. “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” Light and love to everyone who reads this message of hope.

Very classy that he didn't mention the crime , homeless and drug issue of the neighborhood and Berkeley that is the primary issue. It is not just the small business crime , but the daily challenge of customers sidestepping the muggings and car break ins just to support the business. People with agendas so naturally blame whatever their pet issue is. Couldn't possibly be someone is just retiring after 44 years in a business, and sure, they probably said, 'in this economy' but that's just the trigger for retirement, not the cause. Great place, been going there 10+ years. That said, there were always too many employees per shift, rising food costs, forced shut down during COVID, free food program... Too many things combined to make it economically viable. Saul's, Berkeley social club, and others are able to make it work but, frankly, I i think they are run more efficiently. Business is brutal.

Not free food, but a pay-it-forward program, which someone paid for the foods for the next customers who are hungry and need helps. This type of program is popular in asia, which helps a lot of laidoff & unemployed people.

@@415_Stand-up Well, let's see, the real estate industry which makes up 30 percent of their gnp is pretty much in the trash. Protests are breaking out all over China because depositors can't get their money from many banks. The unemployment figures of recent graduates by the ccp is estimated to be 20 percent plus, although they've stopped giving out numbers. The real figure is probably somewhere around 40-50 percent. The other major nail in China's coffin is the massive number of foreign investment leaving the country. Those investors are now moving to India, Vietnam, and Thailand(and they ain't coming back). They're also taking down the once great power house of Asia, Hong Kong, with them. You need to get your head out of your ass and do some research.
