Quake 2 uses per-vertex mesh deformation, instead of (what would later become) the standard skeletal animation. This sort of thing happens when a mesh's vertices interpolate between two poses that are too different from one another.
Incredible segmented run alot of fun to watch knowing older routes and tricks. Lots of swag rocket jumps and some grenades too. I remember me and my good mate Ali, trying to get the best speeds possible, then we saw the videos that others had done... Kind of brought it home just how impossible it would be for either of us to get even remotely close to their speeds. I managed Q1 in about an hour and 15 minutes and Q2 in just under 3 hours. One thing I might do however, is Dawn Of War... Maybe from the first up to SoulStorm, I can complete them in silly times, but alas, I am not sure if its worth trying?

Had a comment explaining it, but I guess it's gone. Before games used skeletal animation, they used per-vertex, and Quake 2 used interpolation on top of that. What you're seeing is one of the drawbacks of the approach: when interpolating between poses that are too different from one another, the model gets mixed up into itself. This is because the vertices, being just points in 3D space, can't possibly know which shape is the proper one.
Strogg manager: Guys... What the fuck happened here? Confused stroggs: Idk, some kind of angry frog zip zapped on the base and blew everything up. We didn't even get a good look at him...
