    Simon Sebag Montefiore is one of the most important historians alive today. His many books, like "Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar," "The Romanovs," and "Catherine the Great & Potemkin" are essential to understanding power, politics, revolution, dictatorships, and above all, human nature.
    While most of Sebag Montefiore’s books are biographies of people, Jerusalem is a biography of a city-one that is “the house of the one God, the capital of two peoples, the temple of three religions, and she is the only city to exist twice-in heaven and on earth.” The book takes you through 3,000 years of Jerusalem’s history, from King David to Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu. It is a must-read. It has sold more than a million copies, and it has just been reissued in paperback.
    With the ceasefire deal underway in Israel and with Donald Trump a few weeks into his second presidency, we could not think of a better person to talk to at this moment.

    It may be a cliché to say, but it remains true-for most Jews around the world, October 7th triggered something deep within us, affecting our brain, nervous system, and perhaps even our very DNA. It profoundly altered the way we experience the world.

    The reason we thought it was the End of History, because we believed man/woman’s nature is basically good, when in reality it is basically bad, eg there are people like Putin, who are essentially mafia style bullies, willing to commit evil acts to get their way (eg, Iran, China, almost all of Africa, North Korea, etc). “But,” you would say, “That’s only a few individuals. You said, ‘Most people’s nature is bad.” I would then ask, “Who blindly follows these few horrid leaders and how many are they?” If we were basically good, then the world would naturally gravitate to “Love your neighbor as yourself” and the End of History would be in reach. Sadly, that is not the world we live in and, likewise, we have to prepare for tyrants and the only way is through greater strength, not a better philosophy alone.

    The word liberal comes from līberālis (liberty, freedom). “World order“ is the opposite of this.
    Why would we think that small groups of transnational bureaucrats would make anyone more free, or handle 8 billion people‘s separate interests more effectively than local governments, or better yet, no government absent actual harm.

    • @laurenc8387
      @laurenc8387 5 днів тому +1

      The things human beings have achieved, from an organizational point of view, are too complex to continue running without some sort of government. Any agency created for a specific purpose is a way to streamline action and communication, essentially a division of labor. You can criticize current governments, agencies, the ways that any of these are run, but to suggest that countries can continue to function at today’s level with only local government or no government at all is a very naive and uneducated take. Take for example the coordination it takes to create a global flight system. That is not something thousands of local governments all over the world can coordinate, not to mention how much more expensive that would be if they tried

    • @VeniVidiVid
      @VeniVidiVid 5 днів тому

      @ It’s easy to assume that complex systems require management like government in order to coordinate. But the opposite is often true.
      Much like murmurations of birds or fish, individuals interacting with each other can seem to be planned, but they’re not (at least not singularly at a high level). The planning is distributed amongst millions or billions of participants. As you may be aware, the concept is called Emergent Order.
      Centralizing control to smaller and more distant groups of governors, increasingly invites authoritarian inefficiencies and abuse. Even if such limited and remote governing bodies are comprised entirely of geniuses and saints, they’d suffer from what FA Hayek would call the Knowledge Problem. They don’t know as much as the billions of participants do, distributed amongst themselves.
      This is not an argument against the rule of law. Ethical law stems from a need to mitigate harm. When there is no harm (voluntary trade, for example), no external law is required, or ethical.
      Ever more centralized governing structures inevitably become ever more abusive and stultifying.

Pax Romana springs to mind for instance. The guy is talking from not just westerncentric worldview but Britishcentric worldview and even then..as I just showed he is full of nonsense.
