  • Normally, I don't do demos for those budget products you find mostly on Amazon. And I was going to say no to this, too.
    But I decided to give the checks notes "Vangoa Guitar Pedal Board with Built in Power Supply Board 9V/12V/18V for 10-12 Pedals Aluminium Alloy Portable Folding Powered Guitar Pedalboard with Carry Bag, Pedal Cables, Medium" a try.
    I cut to the chase within the first minute of this video, but I highly recommend watching the whole thing for product info and a look into the good and the bad of using this thing exclusively for a few weeks.

    Ohio, huh.. Hey, in case you're not sure and need validation, you do bring good vibes and substance to the table of guitar channels, more than most. I like the granular electricity numbers and explanations, that's a nice touch, the tech acumen, both edifying and impressive. The casual sort of humor, not only does it work but it differentiates you. You're finding a good rhythm, you and your ... assistant, and I hope the algorithm agrees in the form of eleven million subs, not just for your sake, but for eleven million of us to learn from and be entertained by you, also the meow pedal companies. I have no advice but to keep it up. Thanks!

    I have my Main Pedal Board (Gator Extra Large) with two Gator Bricks (5 spot and an 8 spot) and I ran into milliamp issues with two of my pedals (Ibanez Echoshifter and EHX Oceans 11) where I had to use wall warts on those. So I have thirteen pedals but only use 11 of the spots on both bricks. Fortunately for me what I did was Velcro a smaller power strip under the board so that I just have one electric cord and I was able to connect all plugs and warts (I also put an LED light strip under the board which needed a USB port) and everything fits well. I do want to get some frost plastic for the front facing holes but the board pretty much does everything I want a board to do.
    I have two other boards but I just use a One Spot daisy chains on those and they work fine, they are Standard or Budget Pedals so there isn't a heavy duty requirement for great electrical demand.

    "in an environment where water, moisture or high temperature is present"
    Sounds like 95% of small clubs where bands and crowds are sweating their ass off :D
    To check for isolation, you can get a multimeter and measure resistance between all ports center ans sleeve. There should be no connection between different ports, so infinite resistance on everything.
    And yeah, I've seen a lot of cheaper power supplies claiming to be isolated, but most of them have been common ground and just have single voltage regulators or even just a diode on each port. Can be fine for a lot of stuff (my whole board is daisychained, no problem at all), but it's not isolated.

    The noise at 22:34 may be from sharing a 9v line with a digital pedal

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 5 днів тому

      Or the milismps not being enough.
      I share 9v lines with digital pedals, and have only gotten those sounds, through a One Spot, chaining things, which sometimes would reveal a pedal that needs more than 100 milliamps, or just how noisy some digital can be, when it’s in a chain.
      Some made noise, that was too much to play at all.
      Yet, I use an MXR ISO Brick, for the majority of my board, and I have 32 bit digital delays, as well as TC and Nux digital multi effect pedals. I also have a few cheap, Chinese made digital pedals. None have had those noise issues, since I switched from the One Spot chaining method, and the two cheap power supplies I tried first.
      I finally found what is now called the Pedaltrain Classic, in a hard shell, with an MXR Phase 90 and a Pedaltrain Power Plus 2, mounted already, for $100.
      That Pedaltrain isn’t great with a lot of digital pedals, but some are quiet with it. I really just use it for OD pedals.
      I use the ISO Brick for everything else, including a vintage pedal, that has been loud since they first made it. 😄

    I know how frustrating this can be, especially when you need something reliable to hold up with gigs and on small tours. It's also quite annoying and frustrating to have something working, and then two days later something isn't right. I know at the end you said you felt it was worth the money, but will you continue to use it? Is there another item/product that you normally use that you like better? I ask because I've been looking at and researching boards as of late. I always feel that the power supply is the most important key to the puzzle and to many is overlooked. Very cool video Emily, I greatly enjoyed it!

    • @GetOffset
      @GetOffset  7 днів тому +2

      I do think I'll keep using this for certain gigs, tbh. It's nice for low-key pedal needs, and a lot of my shows don't really need a big, complex board with lots of digital pedals.
      I'll probably use this for medium-sized board needs (like my main band) and a few of those d'addario xpnd boards in other applications. They have a great tiny board for fly-away stuff and a big board for a spaceship rig.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 5 днів тому +1

      I’ve been through the same thing, and it’s a very odd market.
      For the money, I’d look for the old reliable Pedaltrain boards, but only ones with the metal case. Not the hard shell cases, with cheap wheels. Those are more durable and solid, than the wheels would make it seem, but not like the silver cases, that they have.
      I don’t think they even make them for boards, under a certain size, but look for the used Pedaltrain Classic.
      It’s not huge, but not a small board either, and it’s worth at least getting a power supply like the MXR ISO Brick, over cheap ones. The ISO Brick isn’t even that expensive. They can be found for very fair prices, used.
      I’d love a Schmidt Array, and so know the exact one, but the only used ones I ever see, cost as much as a good amp.
      I’d I had the money, I’d get one, or have one built, but they’re case/board builds, selling for $1400 used, for one that isn’t that big.
      I’ve found a few for a little less, but they’re not Schmidt Array. They’re someone who built a board, going off the specs.
      Yet, I can’t get a refund from those guys, or any customer service, if it’s not as durable after 6 months of gigging, and starts falling apart.
      Mono have decent boards, and if one doesn’t mind the Velcro being all over a board, it’s pretty easy to find used ones for good prices, at any size. They all come with those soft cases.
      In my experience, one doesn’t want a lot of weight in them, but they should hold the board fine.

    I’ve come away thinking both that this looks like an amazing deal, and also feeling more confident that building my first board with a Pedaltrain and Cioks was a good choice.
    How do you like the Shure wireless? Is the tuner good? I was just looking at that one.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 5 днів тому

      It was. The Cioks supplies, are what the guys who want silent boards use. They’re thin and small, and they have the ability to add another supply, without a wall plugin, with 4 or 8 outlets.
      If I could go back, I’d buy the package deal, with the DC7 and 8 Expander.
      I just bought a used Pedaltrain Pro, with the old style metal case. No cheap wheels, just a handle on a very durable case.
      Those Cioks would fit right on top, with mu pedals, and the loop switcher I got, for the bigger board.
      I didn’t need room for more pedals. I needed room for a loop switcher or two, and maybe room for at least one power supply on top.
      I looked and looked, and short of the Schmidt Array builds, which are over a thousand dollars more than even the highest price Pedaltrain Pro.
      There are some others, that Inthink are better pedalboards, but they usually only have soft cases, or the hard ones are just too expensive.
      I mean Pedaltrain sells their hard case, at a ridiculous price as well, new. Just the case, with no board.

    I feel your frustration, troubleshooting pedalboards is the worst, particularly in a time crunch. I'd also worry a bit about the same thing I worry about with my own Amazon board, namely those power sockets are right on the front edge, meaning they are easy prey to damage from moving or even on stage (I have a few intermittent leads to attest to this). If they would just set them back like an inch or so, there would be a world of difference.

  • @r1208

    • @GetOffset

      Unfortunately, I'm not sure how compelling that content would be. There's lots of other Donner stuff I'm curious about, though. But if it works at home, it'll probably work at a show (though if it's not isolated, could present noise issues).

    I have a couple of the Outlaw Effects versions of this generic powered board. A small one (one row of 5-6 pedals) and the large one (two rows of 5-6 pedals). Where the Nomad differs/excels is that the power output options are: 3x 9vlt with 600ma shared, 4x 9vlt with 2000ma shared and 2x 12vlt with 1000ma shared..no USB. There is an older version with a removable battery and lower output spec...don't get that one. You can definitely deal with a few digital pedals with the Nomad. I can get my Boss RC-600 and/or the GT-1000core powered from this, with power headroom to spare.
    RE: Your "hum issue"...did you use the external PSU? The big sell of a battery powered pedal board, is (supposed to be) no AC hum. I bought the Mission Engineering 529i for this.
    If you have a pedal that wants more than 500ma, and that's the limit of your power supply, I have had good luck with the ENGL Power Tap. It'll take USB or pedal power supply and output 9vlt up to 800ma. I did not have as much luck with the Mission Engineering 529M (the chassis holds screws and the circuit is in the garbage).
    RE: "USB Port...why?" Check out MyVolts RipCords...there is most likely a solution to power your biggest "biggest jerk of pedal powering" with one of their solutions.
    I'm not trying to preach or come across like "I know"....I've been fighting some stiff power battles as of late, across various guitar effect and table top synth-on-a-pedal board power supply issues. Just chiming in with what I've found thus far.
    Thanks for the video...I wouldn't use a solution like this for my main pedal board either, but they are great for a secondary board, a tester board or a travel board.

    I think that overall it stood up ok, but I have found over the journey that skimping on power supply especially leads to heart ache and sadness, and failures always at the worst possible time. Even with my modest pedal needs I still have specific pedal power requirements to run a couple of old Boss pedals (sniffs champagne cork) for eg, or at least one 18v for an electric mistress clone... oh no... I'm in the rabbithole.

    I noticed that with certain cords, my compressor will hum. When I use my wireless setup...the hum goes away and it pisses me off I cannot trace it down to anything other than these $30 each cords! I also use USB power to stuff, so I might have to eliminate the USB 2.1amp and see if the hum subsides....it really drives me nuts because I am a technician...I hate with a passion, tracing down "hums". It is a fools game.

    There's no way I would ever trust that power supply unless I was home in my living room. Firstly it's not isolated. Has to be noisey as heck. Second, you know it's cheaply made. Thirdly that on off switch on the power supply is the cheapest thing on earth. Good Luck..you'll need it.

    Does it also cause cancer (Cali health & safety)? If you are using things like the UA pedals, would you actually be in the market for a budget solution?
    I really like the idea of powered boards, but most of them are not coming with good PSUs. Is my Cioks overkill for a home player? Probably. Is it going to fry my QC or red panda pedals? Nope!
