With all the fake shredder drama out there right now, it's so fucking cool and refreshing to hear Angel play these leads with no edits, minimal backing(you can barely hear the backing track!) and just raw dogging it. Nice open tone, great feel in the playing, and it's all real.
I've been using the Tone Zone since '91 when I popped one into a Charvel Holdsworth to perk up my tone for an upcoming gig and never looked back. I use the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo in many guitars. I love what it does for all of them, including my main ax, a Basswood Schecter that cost about $200 and sounds like a million bucks. I've always preferred low mids for guitar and DiMarzio know how to make pickups that check these tone requirements for me. Consider also that most guitars out there are some variety of bolt-on, strat scale. What you want is balance, and the Tone Zone is great at filling the tone spectrum. I think it's one of the most versatile and organic pickups ever made. It feels wonderful to play.
Angel is a virtuoso and Larry I've used your pickups for over 40 years. I still have my original Super Distortions that I put in my '76 LP. Keep killin' it man.
so nice to see one of the world's best guitarists do an excellent demo video, with very direct, discrete demonstrations of different techniques and tones, with impeccable technique. his exposition is as artful as his artistry.
red comn No shit huh? Have you ever tried a Majesty? Just curious for reference. Played a Majesty once and man, that neck was NARROW. almost too narrow. I felt like my fingers somehow got fatter.
I still think the Tone Zone / Air Norton is the most versatile Dimarzio ever made...Some people might not like the half cocked wah sound and the mid presence but it really sits well in the mix
I love the combo. And I began using Tone Zones as soon as they hit the market in '91. I bought my first Tone Zone at a Guitar Center in Hollywood about that time, popped it into my red Holdsworth Charvel, replacing a Duncan Distortion, and I was ready to rock. Great, great pickup, perfect for strat scale. I have a Tone Zone/Air Norton combo in one of my basswood Schecters right now and it just sounds wonderful.
You guys have no idea how bad I want that guitar. And angel is such an amazing player. I've been listening to him for like 8 years and I still get goosebumps when I hear like Martian winter its great.
DIMARZIOS RULE. From my Favorite Super Distortions to Clean Vintage Strat Single Coils Pure AWESOMENESS. Always been a Fender/DiMarzio fan Ps: Awesome stuff Angel. 😁
There's something wrong in the video. Position 2 and 4 are both visualized with the SAME split coil position (04:23 and 05:29). I'd love to know which positions are what, but this is confusing...
Laughing so hard knowing how much strength it took angel Vivaldi to censor himself in this interview. Like watching the cable version of an R rated movie lmao
Could someone please verify: Are both the bridge & neck pickups (Air Norton)? He never mentions "The Tone Zone" nor does Charvel on there website. They only say (Air Norton). I love the tone of the bridge pickup and need to confirm what pickup it is? Thanks so much to anyone who can confirm!!
Hello @@LarryDiMarzio , Do you make the Air Norton7/ Tone Zone 7 in a soap bar configuration, or have the option for a custom pair in a soap bar config?. I want to replace the EMG's I have in my 7 string with passives.
I saw the thumbnail photo and I immediately went online and bought a set of Dimarzio Model P+J pickups for my fender Mustang PJ bass. I thought they would give me rock hard abs. I guess I should've watched the video first.
I wonder why Charvel haven't ditched the string trees on their Pro-Mod stuff, like they did on Angel's (and Guthrie's) signature. IMHO a significant oversight on otherwise brilliantly designed guitars. The TZ/AN combo is just a classic and in this setting it just works.
To get rid of string trees you need to have staggered height tuners or a tilt-back headstock. I'm guessing the added cost (mostly in labour / installation) of staggered height tuners would have brought the cost of the guitar beyond what they wanted to charge for it.
Anyone replaced the bridge pickup of the Music Man Axis with a Tone Zone? I'm thinking about it, since I am very disappointed that it does not have that brown sound as the EVH signature Music Man has. I want to get closer to that For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge sound.
That's a great combo. I also recommend the Steve's Special bridge with Air Norton neck. Perfectly balanced, great clarity and harmonics. Petrucci used the Steve's Special for years in his Ibanez sig. Highly recommended.
I want to change the Seymour Duncan Pickups on My Charvel DK24 -HH (full Shred) worst pickups ever, distant sounding, bad sustain, sooo scooped in the mids, harsh and sooo bright ...so Iam between the Ed Norton, Dreamcatcher, Gravity storm, I want a pickup that is smooth on the highs, nice sustain, clear mids, clarity and articulation ...any suggestions?
I think the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo would serve you well. They're warm, bright, and articulate all in one. They also sustain for days. They're a great overall set of pickups.
I have a Tone Zone I had equipped in my old RG that I may re-install. My JEM has an Evolution in the bridge and a Gravity Storm in the neck (Air Norton S gold rail in the middle and I hate it, would rather have a Virtual Solo or something like that). I can say that I'm pretty happy with my Gravity Storm in the neck, for now at least.
@Angel Vivaldi i prefer your 7 string playing over Steve Vai's. Nothing against Vai, it's just when he plays 7, he's very often going to abuse the extra bass string, and then it's going to stick out like a sore thumb, like when literally everyone else plays 7. But you blend the extra string into the guitar, which most people are not smart enough to do on a 7. You also don't abuse the low tones, and that is extremely impressive. I have my own way of doing that as well, but for the time being, that's my little secret. But I keep telling people that it's 7 string guitars that are the future, not just 6s, and you, more then anyone else who's big right now, is living proof of that. Great job my friend.
I'm dimarzio man butTone Zone 7 and Air Norton 7, I don't liked, to much low and mid rage to me, In my opinion the sound of this pickups it's like a ball, for the 6 strings guitar, it's ok but not for 7 strings this is to much low and mids; I 've had D sonic 7, Air norton 7, Blaze 7 set, Crunch Lab and Liquifire and Tone Zone, of these pickups, the most I liked is the d sonic 7 but it's a little bit passed in the lows and mids and after to be searching and listening others dimarzio models, I've decided tu buy the titan 7 set, in my opinion is a very very balcanced pickup set; this pickups haves a very good frequency range that permit work well with the eq of your amp and others eq like pedals, guitar Fx processors, not are invassve pickups; very good job Dimarzio with the collaboration of Jake Bowen.
I like a lot of the Dimarzio offerings, but I personally think the Crunch Lab and Liquifire are some of the worst pickups I've ever used in both 6 and 7 string configurations. I also love JP's playing as well.
In a live show with high volumen you don't need all that fizz and high frecuencies that the other pickups offers, for the public that is only a harsh noise, I think this is really good pickup in a real live situation, I used a lot of pickups live and this set is very pleasant in the highs is like tape, and if you have some muddy frecuencies you can use a Eq to filtering depending other wood on your guitar (I don't recommend this in mahogany).
To send a message, of course. :D "Hey there, buddy, I am Angel Vivaldi, and today I am here to demonstrate my signature pups, awesome playing and of course...my abs."
DiMarzio - Very much appreciate your pickups ; but this video was beyond pretentious in tone. The presenter distracted from the sound of what was being demonstrated. Cheers.

Most ibanez with a 5 way HH have this configuration
The Nova's pickups sound like they are supposed to be hooked up to something expensive, like a big and boutique, juicy and warm distortion pedal.
