I was in a squadron where two guys were shot down and captured on Day 2 of the conflict. The rest of us kept on hauling iron to the target, dodging missiles and flak and getting the job done. The two guys who were shot down on their 2nd mission received Silver Stars. So in a very pragmatic way, if you want to actually win wars, the real heroes are those who manage to avoid getting shot down so that they can keep on carrying the fight to the enemy. That was my take on that remark by Trump. I’m retired O-6. Also a JAG so my mind is slightly askew.
